If you ask Dr. Phillip E. Brown where he’s from, he’ll give you a hearty chuckle and tell you he’s “not from anywhere.” But, if you ask Dr. Brown again where his home is, he’s quick to smile and tell you it’s Northwest Georgia. Born in Clarksville, Tennessee, and the second youngest of six boys, Dr. Brown moved around a lot as a kid. He was enrolled in 11 schools during the 12 years of his K-12 education. He spent good portions of his youth all over the Southeast and Midwest, and he attributes his love of the Blues to his time in Memphis, Tennessee as a child. “It was tough growing up that way, and we didn’t have much. What we did have, we made the best of,” said Dr. Brown. “My father had the tendency to fix things at companies, so oftentimes he’d take a position for advancement or lateral move. Oftentimes, those moves felt like they happened overnight. I can remember as a kid that my parents moved away one time while I was at church camp. I swear my dad
would just get a wild hair and we would move.” But all the hopping from one place to the next provided to be valuable to Dr. Brown. He attributes his interest in education and helping others to all the moving he did in his youth. “When you move around like that, you have to just learn to adapt,” he said. “You don’t ever see the same thing twice; however, it seemed there was always one common denominator I would experience at each new place: the hospitality of the schools. The schools were my first contact with people in these communities, and the adults always proved to be great ambassadors. They always had a welcoming attitude and were always looking out for me to succeed. So when I was thinking about a career, education just felt like the natural place to be.” Dr. Brown first moved to, and fell in love with the Northwest Georgia area before his junior year of high school. It was at Dalton High School that he would meet his high school sweetheart and
wife of 28 years, Sara Brown. Yet, it was also at that school that he advanced from a vocational teacher to the school’s assistant principal, and would later fine-tune his skills as a school principal. “When I got here, I recognized a good thing and thought I’d stick around for a while,” said Dr. Brown with a smile. “I met Sara, and we decided to stay in this area, with only one exception and that was to go to college in Tennessee.” Dr. Brown received a bachelor’s degree in technology from the University of Tennessee. After receiving his undergrad degree, Dr. Brown taught at several schools in Whitfield, Catoosa, Gordon and Floyd Counties. “A lot of people don’t know it, but I actually taught at Pepperell Middle,” laughed Dr. Brown. “The school system and the students did a great job teaching me how to actually be a teacher.” While working as a teacher, Dr. Brown received his master’s in leadership and a six-year educational specialist degree in curriculum from Lincoln Memorial University. He joined the faculty of Dalton High School for the 1998-1999 school year and was named principal in 2002. As principal, Dr. Brown helped develop pre-engineering, marketing, hospitality and tourism, and government services classes. Dr. Brown was selected as the principal for the Whitfield County Career Academy and was later recruited to work as a Senior Associate for the Schlechty Center for Leadership in School Reform. “I’m probably a better administrator now because of that experience,” said Dr. Brown. “At the Schlechty Center, I worked with schools, school districts and teachers to really look at the business of learning and teaching, and how we design workloads for our students. Additionally, we looked at what support structures were in place for our students, and what were the increasing expectations for students in our community and local workforce, and then build programs based on the needs of the schools and communities.”
Dr. Brown said making the decision to return to high school administration was an easy one and is honored to be working with the faculty and staff at Rome High School. “I knew I wanted to be in Rome because of the strong academic tradition,” he added. “That’s what attracted me the most to Rome High. They have a great reputation. I am honored to be following my predecessors, Dr. Mike Buck and Dr. Tygar Evans.” Moving forward, Dr. Brown said he hopes to incorporate his experience as an educator and at the Schlechty Center for Leadership In School Reform to enhance the school programs already established at Rome High. “Continued success is important,” he said. “When you think about it, Rome High School has a strong athletic department and has strong fine arts programs. Not every school can say that. Our students have a lot of opportunities that a lot of students don’t have. I am hoping to widen the avenues of opportunities for our students.” Dr. Brown is already landing feet first into his new Roman role and is excited to be part of the community. “I love Broad Street,” he added. “I’ve liked watching Broad Street over the years and seeing its continued evolution through Rome’s forward focus for what they want for that area. I like that the healthcare industry in Rome is continuing to move forward and expand its services to the community. I think Rome is a great place to be and I’m looking forward to being part of it. Rome is a pivotal player in this region and its success is important to Northwest Georgia.”

What’s that Project? Dr. John J. Beninato, DDS, P.C.
New walls have been going up at John J. Beninato, DDS, P.C., 21 John Maddox Drive, as the oral surgery office undergoes a complete interior renovation this summer. The practice’s owner and oral surgeon John Beninato said construction in his office started on Memorial Day. The complete interior overhaul is expected to be completed by this December. “We had been thinking about remodeling for the last couple of years and decided it was time,” explained Dr. Beninato. “We’ve only had one reconstruction project to this building while we’ve been here for the past 25 years, and that was in 1991 when we had a fire and had to rebuild. Even then, we used the original plans from the 1970s. It was time for an upgrade.” According to the plans drafted by Robert Noble Architect, Dr. Beninato’s new office will have more exam rooms and a centrally located sterilization room. “We’ll have more space,” added Dr. Beninato. “We’ll have more operatory rooms and are going from three exam rooms to eight. The whole office will flow, and the sterilization room will be in the center so that it is easily accessible.” Dr. Beninato’s, wife Barbara, is a Community Volunteer for the Rome Symphony Orchestra, whose office is upstairs. She explained that the new design will move the entrance for the oral surgery office, and create a private entry way for the Rome Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Beninato said his office has remained open through the redesign. “We’ve been working on one side and plan to flip sides and move everything over to the finished side once it gets completed,” he added.
