What’s That PROJECT The Rome Urban Riverfront For the past 35 years the City of Rome has focused efforts on acquiring and improving property along the rivers. The most recent project, dating back to 2005, focused on expanding downtown Rome from Broad Street over to the West 3rd Corridor to the front door of Floyd Medical Center. In the last few years different components of the plan have come to fruition: the Chief John Ross Pedestrian Bridge, the Town Green and the 3rd Avenue Parking Deck. Assistant City Manager Sammy Rich described the latest “Urban Riverfront” project as a natural extension of the Town Green. “The Urban Riverfront Project will improve our downtown trail system by including an underpass for Fifth Avenue,” said Rich. “It will include a walking path lower along the water that will allow for access to a new boat dock that will be home to Rome’s city tour boat, the Joel Sulzbacher Roman Holiday,” said Rich. Additionally the master plan includes a hotel on the West 3rd side of the river, which will benefit from the extra activity along the urban riverfront. The Urban Riverfront project should take approximately one year to complete with weather conditions and water levels playing a part in the progress. Funding has amassed over the years from various sources, principally from The Federal Highway Transportation Enhancement (TE) dollars. “We were able to acquire a total pledge of $2,325,400,” said Rich. “The remaining funds are provided on a match basis, coming from City of Rome general funds. Rich said the project is approximately $2.8 million but the city is maximizing local dollars thanks to the federal highway investment.” The vision for the Urban Riverfront is to transform downtown Rome by allowing closer access to the water and better pedestrian access along the Heritage Riverway trail system. “Once complete, pedestrians can start at the confluence of the rivers, head toward State Mutual Stadium and back to the Six Mile Loop, all without ever crossing a public street. The riverfront will be a natural extension of Town Green and will include additional landscape and seating areas for citizens to come and enjoy the tranquility of the riverfront, or to take a break from downtown shopping and dining,” said Rich.

Celebrates

10 Years

In 2002, Pirelli Tire North America began producing tires on a 127-acre tract in the Floyd County Industrial Park. Pirelli’s $140 million investment has been a great asset to Rome and Floyd County. “Since Pirelli started operation in 2002, Rome and Floyd County have benefited from their capital and human resources investment,” said Irwin Bagwell, Chairman of the County Commission. “The employees’ jobs are meaningful and we are pleased that they have added equipment and expanded over the years,” said Bagwell. “We congratulate them on 10 years and wish them many more years of continued success and productivity.” Floyd County has expanded its role with Pirelli by becoming the headquarters of Pirelli’s NAFTA Region, employing over 250 people in production, engineering and corporate roles. “The operation we have here in Rome is a key part of our premium and original equipment strategy,” said North America region Chairman and CEO Paolo Ferrari. “Looking forward it provides us the flexibility to be responsive to customer needs and produce short runs with high quality and uniformity. This capability is key to being able to secure prestige fitments with top level car manufacturers like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Jeep, and Chevrolet. We’ve done great things here in Floyd County and I look forward to continuing that tradition,” he continued. “We appreciate Pirelli’s corporate citizenship,” said Al Hodge, President and CEO of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce. “They are a major investor in Partners In Prosperity and continue to make a difference in our community.” Pirelli celebrated its 10-year anniversary at the Rome Area History Museum by inaugurating an exhibit that includes a permanent installation showcasing the first tire produced at the facility. The celebration ended with a tour of Pirelli’s campus hosted by Mr. Ferrari. Pirelli was founded in Milan Italy in 1872 by Giovanni Battista Pirelli. They are currently the fifth largest tire manufacturer in the world. With over 22 factories on four continents, Pirelli has over 36,000 employees. orn in New Jersey, the son of an Episcopal Priest, the Reverend John Herring found himself not wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps and began a recruiting and sales career in Atlanta, Georgia. From 1993 to 2005 Herring pursued the business world. Feeling unfulfilled, his wife suggested he think about ministry. After months of prayer and a year of discernment with the diocese of Atlanta, Rev. Herring went to seminary at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. He then returned to Atlanta and served at All Saints’ Episcopal

Church in Midtown. He was one of five priests on staff with a congregation of 2,500. His area of concentration was with their youth, and young adult programs, and outreach to the homeless in Atlanta. In August 2012, the Reverend John Herring accepted the call to serve in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Rome where he relocated with his wife of eleven years, Keri, and his three children Amelia, Madeline and Lucas. Herring has enjoyed his time at St. Peter’s, a place he describes as “spirit-filled,” with warm,

intelligent and generous people. “There is a wide variety of theological opinions in the pews on any given Sunday, but we are all committed to growing in faith together and following Jesus Christ,” said Herring. “Our members are very committed to serving Jesus Christ through serving others, and are dedicated to advancing God’s Kingdom.” Now settled in Rome, Herring says there are many things to enjoy about living here, the civic minded nature of the community being one. “Romans love their town and are very much committed to its development and overall progress.

My wife and I found this quality to be very appealing and it is one of the reasons we chose to relocate here.“ Herring says he has also been impressed with the schools, the restaurants, and Rome and Floyd’s history, but the civic pride sticks out the most. “Oh, and we also love the fact that we don’t spend so much time in traffic!” added Herring. St. Peter’s Episcopal Church is located at 101 E 4th Avenue in Rome, GA. For more information visit http://www.stpeters.episcopalatlanta.org.

Former Riverside School Becomes New Home for

Me r c y S e n i o r Ca r e In November, community leaders came together for the dedication of the new Mercy Senior Care facility. The location for the home, once Riverside Elementary School, was chosen as part of a strategic plan created seven years ago. The vision of Mercy Senior Care was to build a facility that would enhance quality of life for senior citizens. “It has been a great pleasure to facilitate this project for Mercy Senior Care, we believe it will serve the needs of older adults and their families for generations to come,” said Rita Lawler, Executive Director. Floyd County used a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant to provide some of the initial investment. The Saint Joseph’s Mercy Foundation also provided a $500,000 challenge grant, but it was the near $1.7 million dollars raised that gave the project the green light. Mary Sib Banks, A Home for Mercy campaign chairwoman, News Publishing Co. and member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors described identifying a new home for Mercy Senior Care as a rollercoaster ride. “It has been both a rewarding and a challenging journey, particularly the road to this beautiful new facility,” said Banks. “We were up and down emotionally for five years searching for the exact right property and then when we did find it, attacking the challenge to raise funds to finance the renovation, during a recession, was a big task.” Mercy Senior Care provides a variety of day services to nearly 500 senior citizens in the community, including an employment program, on-the-job training, a day health care program, caregiver support services and a special Grands Who Care project. Mercy Senior Care has been sponsored by Saint Joseph’s Health System and the Sisters of Mercy since 1989.
