SMALL BUSINESS
Bussey's Flowers Gifts & Decor
Mark Brewer and Todd Bussey, Bussey's Flowers, Gifts & Decor hold flowers.
Bussey’s Flowers, Gifts & Décor opened a location in Rome during 2010. The Broad Street location opened when Todd Bussey, Owner of Bussey’s Flowers, Gifts & Décor, realized that their one location in Cedartown could no longer handle the demand in Northwest Georgia. Since the opening of the Broad Street location, Mr. Bussey has seen tremendous growth. “Broad Street is so highly traveled, and it is the place to be,” said Mr. Bussey. “We are noticed just
by people walking down the street, and then they remember our name when it’s time to order flowers for loved ones. Rome is a vibrant community with diversity tourism and five colleges that constantly bring in visitors, all of this has made Broad Street and Rome a perfect home for the store.” In recent years Bussey’s Flowers, Gifts & Décor’s staff has seen an astounding growth in the amount of weddings that are held in Floyd County, which has benefited their location. The Rome location works primarily on weddings and events that are happening in and around the area with the help of Andrea Calhoun, floral designer, who is in charge of design and implementation of weddings and events. Mr. Bussey attributes much of their success to how the clients are treated when they call or stop by, “We don’t just sell flowers, we sell emotions,” said Mr. Bussey. The time spent with each client is important to the team at Bussey’s and helps them understand their clients need whether it’s for a wedding or just any occasion bouquet. Most recently the business has grown even more with the recent merger of Ransom Floral Company. A merger had not been in the plans for Mr. Bussey, but when Mark Brewer approached him about selling, Mr. Bussey knew that it was the right decision. The decision to merge brings in more customers, more equipment, and even more talent with the addition of Mark Brewer to their team. “We are so happy to have Mark as a part of our team, his knowledge and experience will be beneficial to our company and to our customers,” said Mr. Bussey.
Workout Anytime
Under New Ownership and New Management Mark Sentell, Owner of Workout Anytime in Rome, spent a majority of his adulthood working corporate marketing and sales, but felt a constant pull towards owning his own gym. The desire to make an impact on people’s health became even stronger as he watched his own mother's health deteriorate until she could no longer do things for herself. When the opportunity for him to buy the Workout Anytime franchise location in Rome he jumped, at the chance. “I knew I wanted this gym since the day it opened five years ago,” said Mr. Sentell. “The franchise is a Georgia based business and is growing rapidly. It has 24 hour access for members is a perfect fit for a city such as Rome that is a medical hub and home to many manufacturers. The 24 hour, seven days a week access allows 2nd and 3rd shift workers to go to a gym and have time to focus on their health.”

The staff at Workout Anytime is dedicated to providing Rome and Floyd County with affordable fitness options and knows how important healthcare can be. “Were not here to sell memberships,” said Mr. Sentell. ”We are selling health that improves the quality of life for members of our community.” 8 | Momentum

Syntec Industries
MANUFACTURING
An Ever Growing and Changing Business Syntec began with Bill Watters and his brothers working together at Integrated Products, a company owned by their father. Integrated had purchased a staple polypropylene line and was looking for something to do with the fiber. They ran into Sea Ray, a boat manufacturer, in the Dalton market purchasing yarn with which to produce their own carpet and they began selling them yarn. Approximately one year later Sea Ray had a manufacturing issue in their Tellico plant in Tennessee and they went to their facility to see if they could help address the problem. The result was they had a problem with their roll-up at their coater. Not long after this they sent Bill passes to Manufacturing Days at the Miami Boat Show. He attended and realized how much carpet could be sold in this market. This planted the first seed that would one day grow into Syntec. By fall they sent them passes to attend IMTEC, a trade only show in Chicago. Tom Watters and Bill Wattersattended the show and Bill Watters, President of Syntec Industries when they returned Bill knew this was their market. He also knew they in the corporate headquarters located in had a lot to learn if they were to succeed in this market, but they learned stands Rome and Floyd County. quickly. Through the winter of 1985 and 1986 they developed the company name and logo. By February 1986 they attended the Miami Boat Show with samples to show. They were ready in time for their annual model change and began selling carpet to the marine industry in June 1986. Their first sale was to Wellcraft and by the end of 1986 they had sold them $100,000 total, one style, one color, one customer. By the next model change they had picked up three more customers and they were on their way! In 1986 they sold Integrated Products and by the late 80’s Syntec was a separate company, totally independent of Integrated Products. In 1989 they took back the portion of the Rome plant that now houses their twisting and heatsetting departments and immediately added on the east building. In that location they put a staple extruder and continued to focus on the marine market. In 1990 they began looking at the RV industry. Within a couple of years they were selling carpet to the van conversion market and making headway into working their way into the RV market. In the mid 1990’s Syntec installed their first BCF extruder. They had captured a large portion of the mid-to-high end marine carpet market and needed a BCF extruder to go after the entry-level portion of the industry. They also developed two high-end BCF carpets, their Platinum and Diamond product lines. Within one and one-half years nearly all of their business was changed to BCF. By the late 1990’s they were producing about 65% of the marine carpet sold in the United States. “I did not like being trapped with only one product line,” said Bill Watters. “I knew if we were going to be successful and survive changes in trends and economic downturns we needed to become more diverse.” They decided to add other products to the existing customer base. This is when they entered the upholstery vinyl business. As this grew, this became known as their “Synergy Program” that has grown tremendously and currently includes carpet, mats, vinyl, fabric, leather, trim, steering wheels, adhesive, Beauflor Flooring, LVT Flooring and Performance Sheeting. In 2000 Syntec made their first steps into the manufactured housing market. This has been a tough market but they finally seem to be making headway with their new polyester carpet styles and Beauflor. In the latter part of 2009 they began selling to the multifamily housing market. Sales were growing each month with Beauflor, LVT and adhesives. In 2012, they introduced their new polyester carpet to this market. In 2013, they continued to grow these markets and research other products and markets that would propel them into a profitable future. In the mid 2000’s Syntec began looking into how it could take its next step and this step was the purchase of Gussi Italia, a steering wheel company that was based in Italy. “I realized that this new addition for the company was the next big step toward the future for Syntec Industries,” said Bill Watters. The company is continuously growing their existing products, and continues to take it one step further by producing new products to keep the Rome and Floyd County based business successful. The company has built its success and become what they are today only because of their employees. The talented, quality conscious people that they hire make it happen. As long as their people focus on producing the best quality and providing the best service they will be able to continue developing and selling their products. “The past thirty plus years have been challenging and fun and I hope to see another twenty-five years of the same for myself and the great employees that are part of our Syntec Team,” said Mr. Watters. 9 | Momentum

Drones have become increasingly popular since they were commercialized for the average citizen to buy. Many people around the world see them not just as a toy but as a way to have a business. Keith Beauchamp, Owner and President of KB Aerial Imaging and Video Production, started out his career in Information and Technology working for General Electric, Progressive and more. When his wife Dr. Mary Beauchamp was offered a position with Harbin Clinic, Mr. Beauchamp knew that it was a perfect time to work from home. During this time Mr. Beauchamp began to become more and more experience with a drone he had bought, and realized that his drone combined are all his passions into one piece of technology. “I’ve always loved photography, gadgets and using technology, and with drones becoming more affordable, I wanted own my business and meet the needs in the Rome and Floyd County community,” said Mr. Beauchamp. For two years Mr. Beauchamp ran his home business for I.T. and K.B. Aerial Imaging and Video Production. He became so busy with filming homes for local real estate agents that he knew it was time to make K.B. Aerial his full time job. The business’s popularity was already growing around the area, but when a video of the high waters in Rome during 2015 went viral it took KB Aerial to the next level. “That one video really launched my career in this field,” said Mr. Beauchamp. “After that was shared on news sites around the country and the world I was contacted by PBS to film in Alabama for PBS NewsHour in 2016. This was truly a once in a lifetime experience.” The advancements in the technology of Drones is allowing KB Aerial Imaging to do even more with their drone work. “Drones are becoming more affordable and even more advanced as time passes, “said Mr. Beauchamp. “The more drones are capable of the more I can offer clients.” Currently Mr. Beauchamp uses drones with a 4K camera, motion detection and the ability to move around buildings and trees, detect a body or a car and be able to follow their movements. All of these advancements allow KB Aerial Imaging to provide a unique service that combine all of his passions and run a successful business at the same time.

Why did you become an Ambassador?
I became an Ambassador to expand my professional network and become more engaged with our local business community.
What is your favorite Chamber event and why? My favorite Chamber event would have to be the Small Business Action Council. I've worked with businesses in the past that have invested in out of town seminars to teach us the same classes offered monthly by the Chamber.
