How four Harbin Clinic physicians are preparing some of Major League Baseball’s youngest athletes for a healthy career.
For the past few years, Harbin Clinic Orthopaedic Surgeons Drs. Darrell Lowrey, Brad Bushnell, Chris Piller and Family Practice Physician Dr. Tim Connor have traveled to Lake Buena Vista, Florida to work with Atlanta Braves affiliated teams as a part of Major League Baseball’s Spring Training. During this time, the physicians diagnose any orthopaedicrelated and general medical conditions. The teams they serve include the Gwinnett Braves, Mississippi Braves, Lynchburg Hillcats, Danville Braves, and local team the Rome Braves. As orthopaedic physicians, they work on players’ joints, and particularly their elbows, knees and backs. This is a part of a fully comprehensive physical that a group of physicians perform on Dr. Piller (left) and Dr. Lowrey (right) pose for a quick picture after batting practice at the Atlanta Braves Spring Training facility in Lake each player, coach, staff member, and athletic trainer. Buena Vista, Florida. All four physicians serve the Rome Braves as team physicians and Dr. Connor is the primary family practice physician for the team. In these roles, they treat musculoskeletal conditions and treat the athletes for allergies, asthma and illness related symptoms. Having worked with these teams and the Rome Braves since they came to Rome and Floyd County in 2002, Dr. Lowrey described the excitement they experience every Spring when they reunite with players that have advanced in their minor league careers. Some of the most notable players are Atlanta Braves stars Brian McCann, Freddie Freeman, and Jason Heyward. “We get to watch them progress locally with the Rome Braves and it’s very exciting to see those players again every Spring,” said Dr. Lowrey. Dr. Bushnell completes similar duties with the Colorado Rockies at their Spring Training facility in Scottsdale, Arizona. He served the Rockies as assistant team physician during his medical fellowship at the SteadmanHawkins Clinic in Denver, Colorado. During this time, he also served as assistant team physician for the Denver Broncos. Dr. Bushnell attends the Rockies Spring Training in March and returns to work with the Rome Braves during their April Spring Training. July 2012 6
These four physicians symbolize the quality of comprehensive care the Harbin Clinic provides to athletic teams of all types. As a result, they have developed significant relationships with nearly every local high school, college and professional athletics team led mostly by the efforts of retired Harbin Clinic orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Sidney Bell. “Harbin Clinic’s approach is different,” Dr. Bushnell added. “We take care of the community regardless of their socioeconomic status. Through our numerous medical sub-specialties we are able to provide any type of care our patients would potentially need.” Dr. Piller elaborated, “Sports medicine is an amorphous practice, essentially meaning that a sports medicine physician has completed all their medical training, and focuses on the treatment and prevention of injuries as well.” With the numerous specialties at the Harbin Clinic, patients receive a total approach to their care. The Harbin Clinic has neurologists who work with Dr. Bushnell (left) and his son Bo pose for a concussion-related injuries, primary care physicians who treat asthma and picture with Colorado Rockies first-baseman allergy-related issues, women’s health physicians who treat female athletes, Todd Helton during Spring Training. and chiropractors among numerous other specialties. Since sports related injuries can occur at any point in the day, the Harbin Clinic Sports Medicine team has made themselves readily available in critical hours. For example, a member of their sports medicine team is present at every local high school football game. They are also available the following morning for any immediate attention. Beginning in 2010, Harbin Clinic began offering the ImPACT (Immediate PostConcussion Assesment and Cognitive Testing) test to athletes at Armuchee High School, Coosa High School, the Darlington School, Rome High School, Shorter University and Berry College. This test is the most widely used, and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system available. Physicians and athletic trainers perform the ImPACT test before the season begins to get a baseline reading they can compare against during the season. This way, the physicians are able to determine the severity of a player’s concussion. The physicians also stated that they have seen an increase in ligament tears with female athletes. “We work with local athletic programs to implement injury prevention programs. Through these programs, we are able to identify men or women that are at higher risks for tears. We then work with them and their Former Atlanta Braves pitcher Tom trainers to prevent them,” Dr. Piller added. Glavine sits in the dugout with The quality of care offered to the community through this program is unlike former Rome Braves catcher Braeden Schlehuber at State Mutual Stadium, many others in communities of comparable size. “You don’t see a program like home of the Rome Braves. this everywhere. Rome and Floyd County are truly blessed to have a program as comprehensive as this one,” Dr. Piller added. A contributing factor to Harbin Clinic’s success is their electronic medical records system. “Any physician at the Harbin Clinic whose patient is an athlete can see the treatment I gave an athlete or any particular medications they may be using,” said Dr. Connor. “This is extremely important so that we ensure each athlete is receiving the proper treatment.” Each physician is an active community member and Dr. Bushnell recently completed the Leadership Rome program and was recently appointed to the Berry College Board of Visitors. “Through Leadership Rome I was able to see the various aspects of the community that keep things going,” he added. From the big leagues to local athletics, the team of sports medicine physicians at the Harbin Clinic are working diligently to ensure that each player they work with remains healthy through the remainder of their career. GREEN Mark Cochran, owner, Cochran Design Collaborative flexes his architectural muscles in building Rome and Floyd County’s only LEED Certified House. Expanding architectural horizons in Northwest Georgia, Mark Cochran, owner, Cochran Design Collaborative is using his personal time and money to build Rome and Floyd County’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified house. Founded in July 2010, Cochran Design Collaborative offers comprehensive architecture and interior design. “I started Cochran Design Collaborative because I believed that I could add a different perspective to architecture and interior design,” Mr. Cochran added. Collaboration is becoming more prevalent in the architecture community and Mr. Cochran thought it was a great fit for the name of his company. “I selected ‘collaborative’ for the name because architecture is everbecoming multidimensional, multifunctional, and multipurpose,” Mr. Cochran explained. “Architects now have to have an understanding of mechanical engineering and general contracting. The day will come when building construction will become so intense that we will have to collaborate.”

Cochran Design offers medical, residential, retail, commercial and industrial architecture services. They have recently completed work for Brugg Cables, Floyd Medical Center, and Harbin Clinic’s Chiropractic Center. They are also in the process of designing the new Mercy Senior Care offices. Mr. Cochran holds a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management from Georgia Southern University and a Master of Science in Architecture from the New School of Architecture & Design in San Diego, California. He is a registered architect in Georgia and Alabama and is a Georgia-registered interior designer. He is also a LEED certified architect. Interior Design is a section of the business Mr. Cochran is looking to grow. To better complete this goal, Mr. Cochran hired experienced interior designer Melissa Craven. Cochran Design Collaborative intern Alexandria Brock works on a project. “Interior designers typically come from two schools of thought: decoration and architecture. We focus on the architectural facets of interior design, leading to a more cohesively designed structure,” Ms. Craven explained. Mr. Cochran attributes their success to his perseverance. “If you work hard, eventually your hard work will pay off,” he stated. When asked about what he personally enjoys about architecture, Mr. Cochran answered with, “It’s either one of two things. I enjoy interacting with people and figuring out problems. I also enjoy the artistic expression where you can let the art take over and everything else goes away.” A form of expression, Mr. Cochran embarked on a unique challenge Mark Cochran works on a design for a new structure. in designing his own home to be LEED certified. This home is the first home in Rome and Floyd County to receive this certification. There are four levels of LEED certification. The first is certified, followed by silver, gold and platinum. Mr. Cochran is hoping that this house will eventually reach the platinum certification, which only six other homes in the state have done. To build a house of this magnitude, Mr. Cochran took a full look at all aspects of home construction. To appropriately meet the certification, he had to photo document nearly every step of the home construction and submit to LEED for their verification. An example of this attention to detail came through his efforts to make the house more energy efficient. During this process, he Cochran Design Collaboratives offices are located in the Dempsey, Lord, Smith building at 901 North Broad Street. altered the typical stud spacing in this house to increase the amount of insulation and decrease the amount of lumber used. Upon its completion, this house will be the permanent residence for Mr. Cochran and his family. Rome and Floyd County already have other LEED Certified buildings such as the E.C.O. Center, Darlington School’s Middle School, and Berry College’s Audrey B. Morgan Hall and Deerfield Hall. Mr. Cochran serves on the board of directors for the Historic DeSoto Theatre and is a member of the Seven Hills Rotary Club. He is involved with the Chamber through the Young Professionals of Rome and Entrepreneur Roundtable. “The Chamber provides the best opportunity for networking and meeting local businesses,” he explained. “It gets you in front of people and helps you to learn their stories.” Mark Cochran works on an addition to one of the For more information on Cochran Design Collaborative, find them in cottages at Berry College. the business directory at www.romega.com. A refuge for memory care The Harbor at
Renaissance Marquis To better serve their residents, Renaissance Marquis Retirement Village is adding a 24-bed memory loss and Alzheimer’s unit named The Harbor at Renaissance Marquis. This new 12,700 square foot facility will provide state of the art technology and will be attached to the current assisted and independent living village. This facility is expected to open in August 2012. Many years of research have gone into all aspects of this facility including everything from paint colors, to interior lighting, and furniture setup. One of the unique features in this facility is the SimpleC Companion developed by SimpleC, a company that provides personalized non-drug solutions to help senior adults. This product is just as it states: simple. Residents who suffer from memory loss tap the screen on the SimpleC computer and they are presented with a slideshow of family photos and heirlooms and are guided by the trusting voice of a family caregiver. Through this program, residents are able to recall events from their memory and are more alert and participatory in life. The Harbor staff can also control the program from the nurse’s station and use it to remind residents of eating and hygiene times, when its time to go to bed or to go to other activities. “We’re proud to be able to offer this program and meet the needs of these individuals,” said Renita Chambers, executive director, Renaissance Marquis. This program will offer four types of specific therapy to the residents including reminiscence therapy, trusted voice therapy, time and place therapy, and music therapy. To better serve the residents, the new facility has numerous open spaces where residents can meet with family. Included in the design is a walking area for the resident to enjoy the outdoors.
