hat some thought was a trend only seems to be trending upward. Frozen yogurt is on the rise and Rome has a new shop where residents can get their froyo fix. sweetFrog Premium Frozen Yogurt officially opened in November, during one of the coldest Rome winter seasons. A little cold couldn’t stop this shop from opening. With his desire to serve a premium product, owner Stuart Hornsby dreams big. No, no, like really big. His mission: to bring customers the best frozen yogurt experience they’ve ever had. As for how, he incorporates “Heavenly” help, quite literally. “I want to be true to our name,” said Mr. Hornsby. “sweetFrog is an acronym: Fully Rely On God. We’re reminded daily of that and we want to encourage our customers to fully rely on God as well.” Rely on God for what? Mr. Hornsby prefers to leave that open ended for their customers to decide. He speaks freely about the franchises’ strong Christian faith and strives to incorporate his own faith into the way he runs his business. “The brand name stands for excellence.
That means a great product and a high quality customer experience. The staff should be friendly and the store exceptionally clean.” The franchise was founded by Derek Cha in 2009. The first shop opened in Virginia, with a second opening in 2010. Five years later, they now have 350 stores all over the US, including a few international locations. That’s right, frozen yogurt is a world traveler. Who knew? Even though sweetFrog has a few international stamps in its passport, community involvement here at home is still a priority. Hornsby says he wants to partner with groups who are trying to make the community better in various ways. The store’s mascots, Scoop and Cookie, are no strangers to local events. “They bring a lot of fun to the store and to the brand. Wherever they can be to make that event more successful in the community, that’s where we want to be.” Frogs don’t speak English of course, but Mr. Hornsby speaks for the smiling, bobble-eyed frogs saying some of their favorite events to date have been the Christmas Parade and a few church events. They also hope to utilize the opportunity of being right across the road from the hospital. The frogs love interacting with children, hoping to brighten peoples’ days wherever they hop. “We work very diligently to make sure our product is the best it can be. A lot of effort goes into what we do that the average customer may not realize.” The sweetFrog shop gets new flavors every three months, rotating a handful of their 21 options as the seasons change. Even though flavors may come and go, Rome’s new resident frogs hope to be a part of the community for years to come. June 2014 7
(Left to Right) Ms. Jan Fergerson, Reverend Warren Jones and Michele Rikard all graduated from Leadership Rome.
Three Generations of Leadership How one family has now had its third generation complete the Leadership Rome program With the graduation of Michele Rikard in May, (LR XXXI) Leadership Rome passed another milestone: three generations of the same family have graduated from the program. Rev. Warren Jones was in Leadership Rome class X in 1991. At age 72, he became the most senior graduate of Leadership Rome. He was thrilled to be accepted and only had reservations about completing the outdoor rope activities. “Jerry Watford, (LR X) Hardy Realty, steadied me on his shoulders, and over the High Wall I went,” said Rev. Jones, referring to an activity where the group must lift, one by one, each other up over a wall until everyone is standing at the top. “Alvin Jackson, (LR X) 100 Black Men, will still tell you that his back hurts from helping to lift me over the wall.” Rev. Jones was thrilled that his daughter Jan and his granddaughter Michelle were also able to participate in Leadership Rome. “I was in the class with Ronnie Wallace, Al Leonard, Craig McDaniel and Katie Dempsey, so there are strong memories of such a great cross section of leaders; we stepped out of our work world and saw more and gained more perspective,” said Jan Fergerson, Ford, Gittings & Kane (LR IV). “A Leadership Rome student has access to places not otherwise available and just getting to see the different aspects of the community from a closer viewpoint, broadens all of our ability to work together in the community. I think Leadership Rome has made our community stronger,” said Ms. Fergerson. Each year Leadership Rome has coordinators who help the program run smoothly and shadows who take over the role as coordinators the next year. Ms. Fergerson was actually the coordinator the year her father was June 2014 8

picked to be in the class. “I was a coordinator for his group and when I learned that Dad was in the class, I told them I would step down to avoid a perceived conflict of interest,” said Ms. Fergerson. Prepared to Succeed I’m happy he was in the class and happy they did Prepared to Share not accept my offer. To see Dad in a raft going down the river – he loved it! Nothing my father did then or does now surprises me.” Rev. Jones is now a vibrant 92 years old! Enter the third generation, Ms. Fergerson’s daughter Michele. “As someone who got involved with the Chamber as a young person I was thrilled to see Michele become interested in the Chamber,” said Ms. Fergerson. “The Chamber has hugely opened doors and grown our business and I am pleased that Michele wanted to participate in Leadership Rome.” “I enjoyed getting to see my home town through a lens I’ve never seen before…. Behind the scenes of how and why everything works,” said Michele Rikard, Big Time Products. “We had a great group, it was a very vibrant group, and everyone got along really well. It was a good mix of industry and business professionals, so we had a great class. If afforded the opportunity, since this selection process doesn’t come around very 2960 New Calhoun Hwy NE • Rome, GA www.unitychristianschool.org • (706) 292-0700 often, it is not one to pass up!” June 2014 9
Chamber News Big time Recognition The custom glove manufacturer Big Time Products received another nod as they celebrate their 10th year anniversary. Previously recognized by Forbes Magazine as one of “America’s Most Promising Companies”, Big Time Products was recently named one of Georgia’s “40 Fastest Growing Middle-Market Companies” by The Association for Corporate Growth! In 2013, they also secured the Guinness Word Record for the “Largest Glove/Pair of Gloves” measuring in at 3.80 m (12 ft 5.6 in) by 2.64 m (8 ft 8 in). Way to go Big Time Products!
Foss expands to Second facility Jim Magruder, Foss Manufacturing, took some time during the Chamber Board of Director’s meeting to update the board on Foss’s growth. “Foss has recently purchased a Plant Manager Kevin Nassar shows off a second building for distribution on Foss carpet sample. Dodd Blvd. that has added 20 jobs,” said Mr. Magruder. “Ultimately we chose Rome because of it’s available workforce and available buildings at the right price. Foss is a U.S. owned Jim Magruder talks to the Chamber firm with strong pride: the employees wear shirts with Board of Directors about Foss’s the American flag,” said expansion. Mr. Magruder. Both Foss facilities were situated in existing buildings. The Rome facility has 2 production lines that are already producing 50% of the company’s volume. Foss uses a completely green process starting with recycled water bottles as materials. The Rome facilities ship over $500,000 of product per day. “We also try and make sure to do business with as many local Chamber member businesses as possible. Whether it’s ordering lunch or getting office supplies we make sure to shop where we see the Chamber logo, said Mr. Magruder.” Way to go Foss!

Community Spotlight Captain Douglas McClure // Salvation Army Captain Douglas McClure has been with the Salvation Army for 12 years, moving all over the southeast from Albany, GA, to Cartersville and now to Rome. “Being a part of the Salvation Army is a Calling and I truly believe I was called into this ministry,” said Capt. McClure. “I’m not only the minister but I’m the secular director for the Salvation Army’s programs.” The Salvation Army is a Christian Organization with roots dating back to 1865 in London. “It started as a shelter for homeless and folks with alcohol abuse problems. As the founder William Booth saw people were hurting and starving and that there where no real shelters so he expanded the operations. Fast forward to 1887 and The Salvation Army established itself in Rome! 127 years later it is the longest running nonprofit here. We are a Christian outreach and charitable organization but you don’t have to be of faith to receive assistance. We don’t discriminate, we are just here to serve.” The Salvation Army now has social services, utility and clothing services and a pantry. They have a shelter for men and a new shelter for women. “It all comes out of our love for God and man,” said Capt. McClure. “Unfortunately things do cost money, so that’s where donations come in, also all of our sales from our Salvation Army family store go back to this nonprofit.” Captain Douglas McClure and his wife Captain Storm McClure share equal ministry with The Salvation Army. They have four children. “The Salvation Army is a unique Calling. It’s provided me the opportunity to travel all around the southeast and I wouldn’t be here in Rome, a town I love, if it weren’t for this organization,“ said Capt. Douglas McClure.
