Neaton Rome

Through its 11 year history in Rome and Floyd County, Neaton Rome is finding substantial success and doing their part to steer the course for automotive manufacturing in

Rome and Floyd County.

Since its initial announcement in April 2000, Neaton Rome has found great success in Rome and Floyd County leading to three expansions and over 350 employees. A subsidiary of Nihon Plast, Co., Ltd, Neaton Rome manufactures steering wheels, moldings, airbags and other interior and exterior parts for Honda Manufacturing of Alabama and Nissan North America. Their parts are used in the manufacturing of the Honda Odyssey, Honda Pilot, Nissan Altima, Nissan Maxima, and Infiniti. Rome and Floyd County’s central location to automotive manufacturers helped secure the deal for Neaton Rome as the Nissan manufacturing facilities in Tennessee and Mississippi are three and Employees at Neaton Rome put together steering wheels. six hours away respectively and the Honda manufacturing facility in Alabama is less than two hours away. “We’ve been very fortunate in this location. Being centrally located to our primary customers has helped us substantially,” said Senior Manager of Engineering Mike Cole. “It’s as if they chose this location with future growth opportunities in mind.” Originally a 60,000 square feet facility, Neaton Rome now occupies over 278,000 square feet. Their first expansion in February 2003 added 85 jobs, which more than doubled their number of employees. In May 2006, they added 20 more jobs and more recently announced, in January, the addition of 113 jobs to meet the demand of their customers. When asked about their success, both Mr. Cole and Senior Manager of Production Mike Hulsey claimed that the family atmosphere among employees at Neaton Rome provides an exceptional work environment. “When there is a crisis, its truly incredible to watch everyone come together to help each other,” Mr. Hulsey said. “As an example, there was an occasion where an employee lost their home to a fire, and numerous employees came together to help this employee put their home back together.” Neaton Rome’s success is also attributed to their exceptional executive leadership in Nihon Plast President Makoto Hirose who has been an incredible partner with the community. “I am glad that Neaton Rome continues to operate at such a high level of success in Rome and Floyd County,” said Greater Rome Chairman of the Board Angie Lewis, President & CEO, Citizens First Bank, a division of Synovus Bank. “I look forward to seeing them continue to thrive in our community.” Both Mr. Cole and Mr. Hulsey are two of Neaton Rome’s original employees and both have seen the full growth of the facility since its opening. They both attributed this high level of success to their employees vision of the future. “Our employees are able to see their potential and the potential for the company. This way they are able to improve and adjust their operations to make a high quality product,” said Mr. Cole. Neaton Rome is involved with a number of local charities and has helped local school systems particularly around the holidays each December. They also support local blood drives and breast cancer awareness initiatives. In an effort to provide more opportunities for the next workforce, Neaton Rome is in the process of adding an internship/apprenticeship program with the Floyd County College and Career Academy that will properly train the next workforce for jobs in the automotive industry. “Working in the automotive industry is unlike any other industry and we want to do our part of preparing the next workforce,” said Human Resources Assistant Manager Jennifer Gaston. The future of Neaton Rome looks bright as many new product lines and other products are on the horizon. “I am pleased with the direction we’re heading and believe that our employees are on the same page. We’re excited for the future,” added Mr. Hulsey. Looking over the last eleven years, Mr. Cole and Mr. Hulsey are both proud of the work the entire Neaton Rome team has been able to accomplish. “Ever since our very first steering wheel, to adding Honda as a customer, and all the subsequent expansions we’ve had, we are very proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish,” said Mr. Cole. The staff of Neaton Rome has found great value in their Chamber membership. “The Chamber has provided us great opportunities for professional development and we’ve seen the results of these opportunities,” Ms. Gaston added. Impacting the

c mmunity One Slice at a Time For CiCi’s Pizza Franchisee Adam Baker, owning a restaurant is more than just the food. It’s about being a true community partner and doing his part to prepare the next generation of the workforce.

A community member for over 15 years, CiCi’s Pizza, located at 2519 Redmond Circle, has added value for families in Rome and Floyd County by providing high quality pizza, pasta and salads at an affordable price. Some of their notable pizzas include macaroni and cheese, bar-b-que chicken, and buffalo chicken. They have recently launched their Italiano thin crust pizzas which are garlic based thin crust pizzas. Along with their all-you-can-eat buffet, CiCi’s offers carry-out options on all of their pizzas. Fueled by the spirit of entrepreneurism, local franchisee Adam Baker entered the restaurant business in 2007 when his brother-in-law was introduced to a CiCi’s Pizza franchise opportunity. “I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur, and I wanted to build and develop people. CiCi’s afforded me that possibility,” said Mr. Baker. Prior to his involvement with CiCi’s Pizza, Mr. Baker worked with a commercial development company in Atlanta that developed the Atlantic Station project. Mr. Baker believes there are three things that set CiCi’s apart from other pizza restaurants. The first is the all-youcan-eat buffet that CiCi’s offers. Through this buffet, diners are able to receive a quality product for a low price. Secondly, the quality of the food and its ingredients are exceptional. “Many September 2012 8

people don’t realize that every item on our menu is made fresh in house each and every day. We grate our mozzarella cheese in house and use fresh vegetables in every buffet item.” Mr. Baker believes that their family friendly atmosphere makes them a different restaurant from others. “We don’t serve alcohol and our focus is on making it a fun, family friendly environment for everyone of all ages,” he added. When asked about his success, Mr. Baker gives all the credit to his faith. “At the end of the day, we don’t know who will come into the restaurant and dine with us, and we have to trust in our faith,” he added. Billy Jo Twilley and Dawn Kelley (right) enjoy their lunch at CiCi’s Pizza with Lexie Kelley and Rachel Twilley (left). The staff of CiCi’s is also very focused on professional development and they have developed several managers into franchisees. He continued, “I believe that if we can develop people into their best, then we are doing our job.” CiCi’s Pizza stays involved in the local community and as a result they partner with numerous local schools and churches. “We work with local schools to see what behavioral, academic or other goals they are seeking to accomplish with their students and then we help reward them once they accomplish their goals,” Mr. Baker stated. CiCi’s Pizza also has a large salad bar featuring unique salads They also have developed a program with the Georgia School for and other traditional favorites.

Through this program, students are able to acquire certain skills which they can then put on their resume to go on and lead productive lives. Mr. Baker is a member of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce because of the role the Chamber plays in this community. “Chambers serve a good function in smaller communities and its important to be plugged into the Chamber to know what’s going on in the community.” He continued, “Anyone interested in the economic well being of a community, I want to be a partner with and that’s the Chamber’s role. The Chamber provides small business owners numerous opportunities and CiCi’s Pizza offers plenty of seating for any resources and helps bring jobs to size party or group. our community.” Find more information on CiCi’s Pizza in the business directory at www.romega.com. NEWCOMER PROFILE

Berry College’s

TONY KUNCZEWSKI On April 16th, Tony Kunczewski officially began a new chapter in Berry College’s Athletics as he was named head football coach for their very first football team.

For Berry College football coach Tony Kunczewski, success is not only measured in wins and losses but also in the impact his program makes on each student athlete. Born and raised in Harrison City, Pennsylvania, Mr. Kunczewski attended Grove City College in Grove City, Pennsylvania where he played a variety of defensive positions including cornerback, safety and outside linebacker. Upon his graduation, he accepted a position with a residential home builder and was responsible for the project management of 10-15 homes. During this time, he pondered the idea of collegiate football coaching. It was through the help of a coworker that he was able to make his initial transition to collegiate coaching. “A pastor friend and coworker shared that we have two choices in life: you either try to love what you do, or you do what you love. I chose to do what I loved and began my career in collegiate football coaching,” he added. Mr. Kunczewski accepted his first coaching position at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania where he served as the linebacker coach and strength and conditioning coordinator. He later accepted a position at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine where he served as the defensive back coach. In the Spring of 2005, he and his family began to look Southward for available opportunities and Mr. Kunczewski interviewed for coaching position at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. As a result of this interview, he was introduced to LaGrange College where he served as the defensive coordinator and strength & conditioning coach for the last seven years. During his tenure, he helped LaGrange College launch a successful program. This experience has prepared him for his new role at Berry, and he hopes to accomplish the same goals at Berry when they begin their first games in 2013. He chose collegiate coaching because of the impact these years make on the life of a student athlete. He added, “Collegiate coaching gives you the opportunity to make such a lasting impact on a student athlete’s life.” He also enjoys the variety of individuals he comes in contact with in the collegiate setting including the student athletes, their parents, faculty and staff, and alumni. His passion for creating men of integrity is his key to success. “I would judge the success of my program by seeing what types of husbands and fathers my student athletes become 10 to 15 years down the road,” he stated. He certainly has his challenges ahead of him as he begins Berry’s football program from scratch, but he is excited about the possibility. He continued, “There is a lot of pride in this school and I am happy to play a small role in starting a tradition that will last for years to come. I am also excited to be in a strong academic institution that has received tremendous support already.” Berry immediately begins Southern Athletic Association competition hosting rival liberal arts institutions Maryville College, Centre College, Birmingham-Southern University, and Sewanee: The University of the South in its inaugural season. Mr. Kunczewski believes that football is a great fit with the schools goals for athletics programming. “I have been really impressed with the administration and their focus of athletics integrating with the classroom. His family is already falling in love with Rome and Floyd County. “Rome and Floyd County is a great place to raise a family and the downtown is outstanding. It’s refreshing to see that the local leaders have done a great job of keeping shops and restaurants downtown and keeping that entire area very attractive.” Overall, he is very humbled to be given the opportunity and considers himself blessed with two great assistant coaches. Be on the lookout for more information on Berry College’s football program and their inaugural season in 2013.
