CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

Greetings Momentum Readers: August promises to be a red hot month – every night! So I offer a tip of my barbecue sauced cap to everyone who is beating the kitchen heat by eating in our great local restaurants: thanks on behalf of our restaurants’ owners and managers. At the Chamber - which is everywhere in our community thanks to our Members, we are celebrating current, growing and new jobs. In this edition of Momentum, we feature our newest large employer Transdev, and as we’re preparing for additional job growth, we are highlighting small business openings as well at Cheers Liquor, The City Creamery and Unique Interiors of Rome. More health care Momentum is happening at Redmond Regional Medical Center with the establishment of a new Internal Medical Residency Program bringing to our community the next generation of physicians. We appreciate Redmond’s Administration John Quinlivan (also our next Chamber Board Chair), Dr. Daniel Robitshek, Dr. Julie Barnes and Dr Barbara Naymick and many others. Our community is proud that we are an international community, with fifteen international companies doing business here with their flags flying next to the US flag. Our colleges, Darlington School and other primary schools (both private and public) are part of our international scene as well. A great neighbor established La Scala Mediterranean Bistro in downtown Rome twenty years ago. Piero Barba brought his authentic recipes to Rome from his native Isle of Capri; now his son, Anthony Barba, is serving some of those originals along with new additions for your palate. Be sure to read about the “then” and “now” with his dynamic brand of dining and entertainment. This month, Momentum will be complete by celebrating the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College. We have featured it from concept to construction and welcome the new leaders of this largest center of its kind in the United States. Tom Daglis and Kevin Brundle lead the staff of the new center. As always, I invite you to visit the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce located at 1 Riverside Parkway and meet the Chamber staff for a firsthand look at where Rome and Floyd County’s economic growth is occurring. At the Chamber, you will find an incredible group who are committed to the future of our region. Feel free to drop by anytime to find out about future events and what we can do for your business.

ow does a young man in his thirties run one of Rome’s oldest and most successful restaurants? Anthony Barba, now owner and “hands on” manager of this 20-year-old Mediterranean bistro has a legacy in fine food service stretching across several generations and back to Italy. Barba took over the ownership of La Scala in 2010 from his father Piero Barba who came to the US from his native Capri, Italy, in the late 1970’s. Piero grew up literally on top of an island sitting in the Mediterranean Sea. He cut his teeth in the hospitality business at an early age by working for his Uncle Marco and Aunt Lina who ran a number of hotels and restaurants on the island. He left Capri to study food service in Holland and returned just in time to help host a group of American girls from Rome, Georgia on their “Grand Tour” after college. The group included his first wife and Anthony’s mother, Emily, who he soon followed to America. Piero’s first American job was in Atlanta in food service at the Hilton. After marriage and the move to Georgia’s Rome, he ran a successful insurance business for many years, but his true passion was to open a fine dining restaurant in his adopted hometown. With a dozen partners, he opened Tiberio’s in the late 80’s. According to his son, “At the time, you could count the Broad Street restaurants on one hand.” After operating Tiberio’s for a number of years, he closed that restaurant to pursue other interest, namely importing wine.

A grand hall with a balcony overlooking Broad Street, recently renovated by Diane and Greg Lewis, will be used for special events by La Scala. LA SCALA MEDITERRANEAN BISTRO 413 Broad Street, Rome, GA 30161 706-238-9000 website: lascalaromega.com

In 1996, Piero returned to the fine dining scene in Rome by opening his very own restaurant, La Scala at 413 Broad Street. At the time, his son Anthony was in high school at Rome High. Piero built the business over the years by providing fine food and exceptional service. Anthony left Rome for college and was considering a career in law. Returning home after college graduation in 2003, he was encouraged to work at La Scala while deciding on his next step. He spent several years, with three partners establishing V3 Magazine.

Then, in 2010, his father located an outof-town buyer and considered selling the restaurant. At that point, Anthony’s genes kicked in, and he declared that he wanted to be the successor in the Barba family to carry on his family’s food tradition. Anthony is now preparing La Scala for the next 20 years of operation by launching a banquet and special events facility on the upper floor of the building. The beautiful new space directly above the current restaurant will be available in the fall of 2016, with space to accommodate banquets, corporate functions, wedding and other special events, all to be catered by La Scala. The facility has been meticulously restored by Diane and Greg Lewis who own the historic building. Special events facility management will be left to Anthony and his La Scala team. “We have already booked several events for this fall,” he says. A balcony overlooking Broad Street with an amazing view downtown as well as the hills beyond is just a small attraction of the space above La Scala. What makes the food and service special at La Scala, besides the family heritage? According to Anthony, “We strive to offer a dining experience so that our customers can enjoy an evening of the finest, freshest and most elegantly presented foods available. As in European style, we want to turn an evening at our restaurant into a memorable experience—not just another meal.” “We have built an energetic, capable and happy-to-serve staff. We offer menu items from products that are specially sourced for their freshness and flavor,” he adds. “For example, we often get fresh seafood from a ‘sea-to-table’ operation that emails us with what has been caught that day at Atlantic seaports and that fresh catch is overnighted to us. We also serve only Choice and Prime beef with a Certified Angus Beef Rating.” According to Anthony, “My father and I have always had an interesting dynamic, but he is an incredible resource and guides and supports me all the way.” August 2016 • Momentum • 5

REDMOND REGIONAL Opens Graduate Education

with a new Internal Medicine Residency Program Redmond Regional Medical Center announces the addition of Graduate Medical Education (GME) with an Internal Medicine Residency Program. The hospital’s mission is to be the preeminent Internal Medicine Residency Program and the program of choice for medical school graduates interested in community-based training in Georgia. Redmond will train a total of 30 Internal Medicine residents; the first class of ten residents began in July 2016.

including an electronic library and computer lab, as well as a resident lounge and sleep space. Redmond’s medical office building and primary care clinic, Redmond Medical Group, have also been renovated to provide enhanced patient care areas as well as office space for the program faculty. A new medical simulation education center has been completed to help train residents in critical care procedures that will enhance patient safety.

The main goal of Redmond is to graduate the highest quality physicians by: 1) providing an environment of excellence, accountability, respect and compassion; 2) creating and refining innovative and evidence-based models of graduate medical education; and 3) fostering intellectual curiosity in a supportive environment where both learner and teacher are passionate about their profession and committed to lifelong learning.

The Rome Community also benefits greatly from the addition of the new residency program in that most physicians end up practicing within a 50 mile radius of their final training site. The residents may choose to specialize in a variety of fields such as Primary Care, Hospital Medicine, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology and Oncology. Many of the new residents are excited to call Rome their new home, describing the city as having a great sense of familial community. Resident Yusra Moursy, MD. explained, “I had never imagined that it was possible to have everything you were looking for in a program and a community. I had always wanted to be a part of a residency program like that of Redmond. Of all the interviews and programs I had been invited to as well as the ones I worked in as a medical student, I have not encountered such a family-oriented yet professional environment.” Resident, Gurkamal Hans, MD, states, “from the moment I interviewed I knew this would be the right place for me because everyone was a family All the staff made me feel more than welcome. Once I moved here I knew I made the right choice.”

Resident Paul Wesley, DO, recognizes and appreciates this commitment, stating, “I decided on Redmond because I felt like everyone I talked to with the program had a clear vision of growing and making the program strong. I also felt like the Hospital was excited to have us there. My wife and I chose Rome because we both felt so welcome by everyone we met during our visit.” The Residency Program is led by Daniel Robitshek, MD, FACP, SFHM. Dr. Robitshek has 20 years experience in medical education and has received numerous Excellence in Teaching and Faculty of the Year awards in addition to being a National Finalist for the Association of American Medical Colleges Humanism in Medicine Award. Redmond has also recruited Dr. Tejas Raiyani, an experienced Associate Program Director from Indiana University. Dr. Raiyani is an Internal Medicine physician and the Director of the newest Redmond Family Care Center at 100 John Maddox Drive. More than 80 clinical faculty will come from both the Harbin Clinic and non-Harbin medical subspecialist in the Rome community, all of whom are enthusiastic to participate in the education of future Internists and specialists. Resident Zubda Talat, MD, explained how impressed she was by the pride with which people declared their affiliations to Redmond. Dr. Talat described the hospital as being an ideal institution to learn based on Dr. Robitshek’s mission to inspire the highest level of intellectual curiosity and excellence. In order to accommodate the new program, Redmond has undergone renovations within the hospital such as extended learning space,

“As program director, I am honored to work with some of the most committed and talented faculty here in Northwest Georgia and with our affiliated academic institutions – the Medical College of Georgia and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. We are committed to training the next generation of Internal Medicine specialists at Redmond. We are also thrilled to be inviting ten new families into our community every single year, families that will live and work, attend schools and churches, and contribute in so many wonderful ways to Rome and Floyd County.” – Dr. Daniel Robitshek August 2016 • Momentum • 7
