We applaud and showcase our members, their products, performances and style in this month’s magazine. In this issue we highlight STEMCO’s recent grand opening expansion as they literally “put the brakes on” adding more quality jobs to Rome and Floyd County. We feature in the issue The Rome Symphony Orchestra and are enjoying humming to their new tune and we are also enjoying the flavorful Smoothie King. We celebrate the anniversaries of two of our community pacesetters in Rome and Floyd County. Congratulations to Fred Taylor and OTR Wheel Engineering for thirty years of quality products and manufacturing excellence. We also give accolades to Mel and Mimi for their twenty years of providing quality clothing and goods at their specialty boutique. We thank both of these businesses who are in some ways complete opposites, (i.e. small and large, regional and global, retail and manufacturer) but in the areas that truly matter, they are similar and they are pillars of our community. They always give back, support and lead wanting the absolute best for their community. We congratulate both and we thank them for their contribution. Please enjoy the myriad of Ribbon Cuttings, Grand Openings and a Proclamation. We work diligently to share within these pages the business collaboration of our community. Please call on us at the Chamber to provide resources for you and your business and we encourage you to stop by the Chamber office located at 1 Riverside Parkway to meet our staff who are ready and eager to serve you. Celebrating 20 Years of Beautiful Women's Apparel in Rome and Floyd County

Melanie Morris and Mimi Weed are a force for good in Rome and Floyd County. These two native Romans have provided women in the community with beautiful and unique apparel for twenty years. Their business acumen has provided them the opportunity to grow and expand over the last twenty years even thriving during tough economic times. A large part of their success is the relationships they have developed over the years with their customers. When the two go to markets either in New York or Atlanta, they go with their customers in mind and buy specifically for them making sure to select their favorite color, proper size, flattering style and appropriate designs for all occasions. Ms. Morris and Ms. Weed knew when they decided to open a boutique that running a small business would be hard work, and there would be times they spent more of their time at their store than at their home, but when customers come into the store and find a special outfit or even just need a little retail therapy, it makes their job even more special. This has made every customer relationship even more rewarding, and drives their passion when they travel to markets for their customers needs. One of a kind clothing and specialty items are offered at Mel & Mimi, located at 203 E 8th Street. With additional boutiques around Rome and Floyd County, Mel & Mimi do not see other boutiques as competition, but as growth for Rome . "We all sell something different, and we focus on being a shop for women of any age whether they are looking for a cocktail dress or something to wear on a date," said Ms. Morris. The store caters to almost any price point including mid range prices to high-end items. Ms. Morris and Ms. Weed travel all over the country to find the perfect items to place in their store, and have seen the world of fashion buying change as well. "The vendors we deal with and bring into the community have become family to us, just like a lot of our customers have," said Ms. Weed. The relationships that Ms. Morris and Ms. Weed have developed over the years have blossomed into family like relationships. Mel and Mimi care deeply for their community are always lending a supportive hand with their time, energy and resources. The "Made in the USA" label is important to them as well as they carry many brands bearing the label. The women made sure they went to market even right after 9/11 to support New York. Mimi Weed stated, "We were thanked repeatedly for continuing to support and travel to New York, we never considered not going." Supporting local artists in their store has also become an added attraction. This speciality boutique features one of kind art and jewelry on a regular basis and their customer base loves it and enjoys getting to be the first to see collection pieces.

Melanie Morris, Owner of Mel & Mimi, Mimi Weed, Owner of Mel & Mimi, stand in the front room of their store on East 8th Street.

The women know their store is a destination being located on 8th street and see the rewards that come along with customers stopping by just tell them hello or bring sweet treats of their appreciation for the duo. The overwhelming support from their customers give the two even more drive to support the town they call home. "We love this town we live in," said Ms. Weed. Mel & Mimi has become a well known staple in Rome and Floyd County and the dynamic duo knows supporting the community is a part of their duty as a business owner. The store sponsors many different events around the community and make sure to always give back. The two grew up in Rome and Floyd County and know the better the community does the better their own business will do. Ms. Morris and Ms. Weed see the entire process as full circle. Mel & Mimi invite all of Rome and Floyd County to help celebrate 20 years of business at their Open House in late August. 5 | Momentum

SMALL BUSINESS

Smoothie King

Bringing a healthy alternative to Rome and Floyd County Jarrod "JJ" Johnson, a Houston transplant, has called Rome, Georgia Home for almost five years, after his wife Dr. Bridgette Dingle, Floyd Medical Center, was recruited to Rome. Mr. Johnson is a business owner in Rome. Having opened Smoothie King, 832 Turner McCall Blvd, in October of 2016. Mr. Johnson served in the Marine Corps and later as a police officer in Houston, but he had always dreamed of owning a business. When he and his wife relocated he knew it was the perfect time to do just that. "I knew that when I moved to Rome that it would mean starting over, and I always dreamed of opening a franchise, and this seemed like the perfect time," said Mr. Johnson, Owner of Smoothie King. When Mr. Johsnon began looking into what type of franchise he wanted to open. He quickly thought of what he was interested in and what meant the most to him was a healthy alternative for meals. "I grew up on Smoothie King in Houston and my wife grew up on it in Atlanta," said Mr. Johnson, owner of Smoothie King,"I just knew it would be a great addition to Rome and Floyd County." "I believed Rome needed something different, quick and healthy on the go, and I think Smoothie King has been just that," said Mr. Johnson.

JJ Johnson, owner of Smoothie King hands a smoothie to a happy customer.

Smoothie King has been growing around the country and Mr. Johnson wanted Rome and Floyd County to be part of that growth. The store front stays busy and Mr. Johnson makes sure to spread the love of Smoothie King around the area with surprise smoothie drop offs and getting involved with his community. "I want people to know who we are and know what we do," said Mr. Johnson.

OTR Wheel Engineering, Inc. Celebrating 30 Years! Fred Taylor started out as a salesman for another tire company, and quickly saw an opportunity. Mr. Taylor knew he could offer orders in smaller quantities and eventually offer original tires designed by his own company. Mr. Taylor knows the importance of building customer relationships and has never wavered from the importance of customer satisfaction. Thirty years later, OTR remains headquartered in Rome, Georgia, with locations in 12 cities, and six countries. There are even more locations under Blackstone OTR division. With a large global reach, the company continues to expand, and supply their customers with tires and wheels around the world. OTR designs and manufactures wheels and tires for Off The Road applications (agricultural, industrial, mining, construction, ground support at airports, lawn and garden and powersport equipment), offering services including engineering tires, foam filling tire services, mounting service and more. The company is able to custom build large and small orders to meet the customer's need. OTR is a global company and their tires can be seen on Kubota, Honda, Komatsu, Genie, JLG and many more. You can also see OTR tires on Aerial Lifts, ATVs, lawn mowers and other industry vehicles. OTR offers thousands of types of tires and wheels meeting all needs.

An OTR employee prepares the tires to be placed on vehicles and equipment.

Their unique tire designs have set them apart from the rest of the world. "Having a great group of engineers to design tires just for OTR really helps set us apart from other companies," said Robert Owens, Chief Financial Operator. The engineers use CADCAM software to help create the perfect tire for an industry need, and then print out the tire using a 3-D printer, allowing buyers to see exactly what they are purchasing. “OTR Wheel Engineering is a bedrock company for our community, and Fred Taylor and his team have influenced the world for their corporate citizenship that sets the driving pace for our entire community," said Chairman of Rome Floyd Chamber, John Quinlivan, Redmond Regional Medical Center. There have been many changes in the 30 years since OTR first opened and Mr. Owens promises even bigger and more additions in the future. Right now OTR is excited to sponsor Truett Racing. Truett Racing, a racing family competing with 2016 Polaris RZR XP 1000 running the number 117 and a 2017 Polaris Ace 900 XC running same number in the Ace class at GNCC. The Polaris off road vehicles sport OTR tires and OTR logos. "Having the racing team has been a really neat experience for the OTR team," said Mr. Owens. Thirty years is only the beginning for the growing company, and everyone is excited to see what will come next. 10 | Momentum

Rome Symphony Orchestra Breathing New Air into the South's Oldest Orchestra

The Rome Symphony poses for the 2017-2018 concert season's program photo.

The Rome Symphony Orchestra has become a staple in the community since 1921 making it the oldest symphony in the South. The orchestra was first founded by Edith Lester Harbin and Paul Nixon and has only grown since its conception. Being the only professional symphony in the area has made the RSO prominent on the arts and culture scene in Rome and Floyd County. After almost 100 years of classical music and concerts the board of directors and the community knew it was a perfect time for a change. The oldest symphony in the South needed a breath of fresh air, and in January they brought in Executive Director Carey Smith. Since the start of his tenure, Mr. Smith, along with members of the board, has made it his mission to broaden the appeal of the RSO to all age groups. To do this Mr. Smith knew there would be a few risks to take, "I just thought; why not try everything and see what works for this community," said Mr. Smith. The goal is to make the updated Symphony fun and entertaining to a younger audience while still keeping its classical roots. Starting its first ever Education Outreach Committee, and to putting a new spin on the 2017-2018 season by giving it the theme of magic, calling this year "Music and Magic." The season will include a magician performing to classical music, Rossini's "Cinderella" Opera, a collaboration with the Rome Shakespeare Festival, and more.

The RSO is making it their mission to educate and help the community understand what the arts do for Rome and Floyd County beyond entertainment. The Symphony brings in musicians, conductors, and more from all around the country and world. "These visitors stay in our hotels, eat at our restaurants, and spend money in our stores," said Mr. Smith. The Symphony estimates they bring in around $250,000 into the community, which almost doubles their operating budget of $150,000. The Rome Symphony Orchestra’s Annual Debutante Ball just happened in June and Mr. Smith says events like this help the Rome Symphony Orchestra leave a large economic footprint on the community. "The RSO rents out Coosa Country Club for the event, we hire staff, the women and men go into Rome and buy dresses and rent tuxes to prepare for this event," said Mr. Smith. "This one event shows the impact we can have on the local economy and that's only one night." According to Smith, The RSO has worked hard to become even more relevant in the community and to bring in guests from the Tennis Center and other attractions in Rome and Floyd County to the City Auditorium on concert nights. A new partnership with Hampton Inn and Suites will allow the RSO to target visitors. The partnership will allow for each guest staying at the Hampton Inn and Suites a free ticket to the show that is happening that weekend. New partnerships with Berry College and the Sara Hightower Regional Library demonstrate the Symphony’s growing outreach into the community. The goal of RSO is to show visitors from around the area and around the south that while it is the “Rome Symphony Orchestra we are also Northwest Georgia's Symphony Orchestra.”

Harbor House Receives $10,000 Check

Stewart Duggan, Harbor House Board Member, Brinson, Askew & Berry, Kim Davis, Executive Director of Harbor House and the Sexual Assault Center of Northwest Georgia, Jo Kirchner, CEO of Primrose School, and Scott Wood, Harbor House Board President, honor Paul Erwin with a donation from Primrose Schools to The Harbor House.

Primrose School, founded by the late Paul Erwin, presented Rome's Harbor House with a $10,000 check in honor of Paul Erwin. Mr. Erwin was a Rome resident and his wife Macy Erwin said of her husband and Rome and Floyd County, " Paul was a man who always felt guided to offer help whenever the need arose and it is our hope today that the same calling he felt then would be carried on here at The Harbor House. Our family wishes to support and applaud the efforts by so many in this community because Rome is where we CHOSE to raise our family and it was the best decision of our lives. Rome will always be our home and I know that Paul is resting peacefully here knowing that, of ALL the spots in the world, God chose Rome, Ga for us!"

End Slavery Georgia

A crowd gathers in support of End Slavery Georgia after the Proclamation is read by Rhonda Wallace, Chair of Floyd County Commission, Citizens First Bank.

After a chance encounter with a victim of sex trafficking the entire Crumbly family, Doug Crumbly, Debbie Crumbly, and daughter Danielle Mullen, began their fight to end sex trafficking by rescuing, rebuilding, and restoring survivors. "We have always had a passion for the fight against trafficking, but when this young lady wandered into our church it gave us the drive to do more," said Danielle Mullen, End Slavery Georgia."We pulled together a hard working, passionate board of local business men and women to help lead the organization." ESG works with Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security and other professionals to bring the most current training on the plight of sex trafficking to law enforcement in Northwest Georgia. Officers are educated on the most recent changes in the laws against trafficking, signs of trafficking, and resources available to the Officers as well as the victims to bring justice in each situation. As part of their plan to educate the communities around Northwest Georgia, ESG is partnering with organizations to provide training. "Floyd County has been the perfect place to start an organization like End Slavery Georgia," said Danielle Mullen, ESG. "The cooperation and networking of businesses, government, the medical community, religious and nonprofit organizations to get the job done has been phenomenal. This is truly a community effort." End Slavery Georgia is currently in the process of renovating a safe house to house survivors. To learn more, please contact info@endslaveryga.org, or by phone 706-512-4134. 12 | Momentum
