STEM FOCUS / Darlington
National Leader in STEAM
Darlington
Photos Courtesy of Darlington School
Darlington School Recognized for its innovation in programs with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math or STEAM. Darlington School quickly identified the need for technology advancement in the classroom and added it to their everyday curriculum by integrating technology into every part of the students’ day. The need became even more clear after attending the Chamber's Confluence Innovation Conference at the Desoto Theater where Darlington staff and students heard Chris Anderson, fomrer Editor and Chief of Wired Magazine speak about the importance of 3-D printers and Technology. To make this a reality in 201617 students in first through fifth grade are assigned an iPad as part of the 1:1 program. Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students are given access to iPads in a classroom setting, older students sixth through twelfth grade are issued MacBook Airs. “So many schools have banned technology,” says Rebekah Kinney, Technology Integration Coordinator. “We realized that when you ban technology at school you aren’t keeping them from using it, but instead forcing them to learn without you.” So with an accelerated program and gifted instructors, Darlington is leading the way in STEAM education as it guides its students through their coursework. The integrated curriculum focuses on the fact that students have grown up with technology. It is a part of their everyday life. So to help foster creativity for learning technology and provide them with a well rounded education while building and developing science and math skills Darlington offers courses such as Creative Technology, Robotics and Computer Sciences. STEAM for Darlington is not limited to just the aforementioned programs. Instead the teachers are encouraged to use all forms of technology and programs as part of their daily curriculum. An example of technology integration is an AP literature teachers assigns a novel for the classroom and asks students to create a STEAM project demonstrating and explaining a theme from the novel. Students are exposed to all aspects of STEAM throughout their daily lessons and if they become interested in one area, the students are given an opportunity to explore and focus more on the topic. Darlington offers iPeriod where students are given 45 minutes/ four days a week to explore a topic they are interested in helping to cultivate academic growth. Currently, students are working on designing an app for the school and learning about woodwork. In October, Darlington was named an Apple Distinguished School for its innovative use of Technology. In November, Darlington was awarded by Technology Association of Georgia and TAG Education Collaborative The Georgia STEM Education Award in the high school division. “We see these awards as affirmation in what we are doing,” says Stefan Eady, Assistant Head of School for Academic Resources. “It helps us know that we are doing the right thing for our students.” Darlington is continuing to make a wave in the STEAM world with hopes of offering more classes that are STEAM centered and allowing students to explore their interests beyond the classroom. SMALL BUSINESS HIGHLIGHT / Honeymoon Bakery
Award Winning Cake Decorators
Honeymoon Bakery Honeymoon Bakery has become a staple of roman culture since Kevin Dillmon opened in 2007. Their location on Broad Street has in many ways made the bakery the “sweet spot of the community,” says Melissa Kroeger, Lead Decorator. Honeymoon Bakery does more than supply the community with their morning muffin or scone; they are also top cake designers. Honeymoon Bakery has designed wedding cakes for couples from Chicago, Texas, Canada and Japan. NoHoneymoon prepares over 200 wedding cakes a year and two of the masterminds behind their exquisite look are Melissa Kroeger and Kate White. Kate White, Decorating Manager and Wedding Coordinator, learned how to decorate cakes in a bakery in Southern California. “I worked at my skill and developed it," says Ms. White. Ms. White took the skills and taught them to Ms. Kroeger when Ms. Kroeger decided to move from the retail side of the bakery business to the decorating side. Ms. Kroeger a graduate from Berry College with a degree in Communication and a concentration in Fine Arts, never thought she would end up in a bakery, but has found her perfect fit. “I love that it gives me a chance to be creative,” say Ms. Kroeger.
Kate White and Melissa Kroeger are famous for their intricate designs and are considered the top cake decorators in the nation by Southeastern Retail Bakers Association and Retail Bakers of America. The cake decorating duo entered a team decorating competition in Alabama in July before advancing to the Las Vegas competition. “Someone dropped off a flyer for the Alabama competition and I knew right away that I wanted to enter it with Kate,” said Kroeger. The two felt their skill set and their chemistry, which has developed after eight years of working together, would make them great contenders for the competition, “We really complement each other,” says Ms. White. “Where Melissa is more into the creative side, I am more logical.” The team decorated four cakes and cupcakes while in Las Vegas. The first being a sculpted groom cake with an element of movement, second place, a tiered wedding cake, second place, a baby shower cake, third place, and a graduation cake where the duo placed first. They were one of the few teams that placed in every category and also won the overall competition. While they now have experienced notoriety for their Bakery, Ms. White explains that her daily customers are still what is important and what makes Honeymoon Bakery special. “It’s all about the customers,” says Ms. White. “I have one family that comes in quite often, I did their engagement cake, wedding cake, anniversary cakes and now I’m doing their children’s birthday cakes. STEAM FOCUS / Sylvan Edge
Sylvan EDGE
Innovative STEAM Education and Accelerated After-School Programs It is estimated that in the year 2018 there will be a shortage of 230,000 STEAM workers. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math. Growing in importance around the country are robotics, engineering and coding Rome - Floyd County has it at the forefront of their academic programs. “There is an ever growing demand in the workforce for 21st century STEAM related skills, and Sylvan Learning understands the need to begin preparing our children at a younger age,” says Angela Baron, Executive Director of Sylvan Learning Center.
Merry & Bright
May your days be
Sylvan Learning has started a new accelerated after-school program called Sylvan Edge, and it has quickly become one of the leaders in STEAM classes in the country. The program helps students first grade through eighth grade explore the future of STEAM. The classes help students understand STEAM and what the fast growing careers of the 21st century entail. Students at the Rome Sylvan Learning are given a chance to explore the world of STEAM with help from instructors like Angela Barron and STEAM Coach Kionte Riley. Ms. Baron and Mr. Riley spend time with their students teaching them firsthand how to develop different STEAM features, coding video games and building robots. In the hands-on classes for robotics, students are given Lego’s award winning education software WeDo™ providing instructions for the creation of helicopters with moving propellers and sound effects. It is all about teamwork in the robotics class where groups of two to three students build their robots. Once the students build their robots, taking time to program the robots so they move and produce sound. While teaching to students to learn hands-on gaming design. The students learn animation, programming and coding skills for their very own video game. While coding and robotics are fun for young students, Sylvan is also preparing them for future jobs. “Offering STEAM classes to elementary and middle school children provides students with opportunities prior to high school and college,” say Ms. Baron.

The trends that we are expecting to see, include increased consumerism in the healthcare market. More access to physicians, reduced costs, and more consumer friendly methods that greatly improve convenience.
Dr. Michael Jackson MD, FAAFP APEX Direct Care
What is your business? At APEX Direct Care we specialize in providing customizable, comprehensive, affordable health care for everyone starting at just $39 per month. We work hard to insure your healthcare dollars go farther whether you have health insurance or not since we work for you and not the insurance companies.
What trends in healthcare and small business do you expect to see in 2017? Health insurance is going to become more expensive for everyone as the Marketplace falls apart and pre-existing conditions are considered again. Hopefully health insurance will be able to be more competitive, sold across state lines, and allow programs like ours to deliver first class healthcare without all the governmentally imposed red tape now so prevalent in the insurance industry.
