he City Auditorium — home of the oldest orchestra in the Southeast, Rome Symphony Orchestra — is in the process of receiving a facelift. Purchasing Director of the City of Rome Bill Gilliland (LR VII) said demolition of a one-story addition behind the stage and theatre occurred in late August to make way for several upgrades to modernize the City Auditorium. The demolition will make way for a new two story addon that will include new dressing rooms and storage, a waiting area for performers and Americans with Disability Act-accessible showers and restrooms. “We had outgrown that space,” added Mr. Gilliland. “With the increased amount and size of performances that are being held at the City Auditorium, we needed to have more dressing rooms and storage. The new addition will provide better access to the stage for quick costume changes.” CEVIAN Design Lab Architectural Designer Audrey Burton, who is overseeing the design of the renovation project, said the façade of the new addition will match the bricking of the Greek Revival-style building. The City Auditorium has been in continuous operation since 1916. Ms. Burton added that state-of-the-art lighting and a new motorized stage rigging system will be installed. “The new lighting will include energy efficient LED bulbs,” said Burton. “The new motorized rigging that will be hung overhead will make stage and curtain changes quicker and safer. With the new rigging system, users will be allowed to pre-set curtain and lighting directions.” In addition to new lighting and rigging systems, new stage curtains will be installed and the heating and airconditioning system is being updated. The project of updating the City Auditorium, located at City Hall, 601 Broad Street, is part of the 2013 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) that was approved by voters. The City Auditorium is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Rome Symphony Orchestra President Barbara Beninato (LR XXII) said she was excited to see the updates and renovations being made to the City Auditorium. The City Auditorium has been a favored venue of the RSO, which was formed in 1921. RSO has called the City Auditorium its “home” since the mid-1920s, Beninato added. “It’s great that we are able to maintain such a beautiful building, such a beautiful venue and theater,” said Ms. Beninato. “Making these improvements are exactly what we wanted. We appreciate all the hard work everyone has put into completing this project.” Construction and upgrades should be finished by February.

General Electric grants 123-acre property to City of Rome

Current and former City leaders alongside current and former General Electric leaders pose for a picture infront of City Hall during the formal transferring of 123-acres in West Rome.

General Electric has formally transferred ownership of a 123-acre plot of land adjacent to the old GE Medium Transformer facility to the City of Rome. Current and former City of Rome officials met with GE leaders to celebrate the pinnacle moment of closing out the lengthy negotiation agreement. Rome Mayor Jamie Doss (LR VIII) told the group who gathered inside the Sam King Room of the City Auditorium that the city is very grateful to GE for its donation. The donated land, which was never used for manufacturing, is nestled in West Rome between Redmond Circle and Lavender Drive. “Be assured we will put the land to good use in West Rome,” Mayor Doss added. “There has been discussion about how the public could most benefit from this diverse acreage, which has forests and open fields.” City Manager Sammy Rich (LR XXI) explained that a plan had been drawn up by a consulting group in 2008 to show how the city could maximize the space. That plan included “passive recreational use” of the acreage including ball fields, walking and bicycling trails, and additional green space. “We may want to tweak those plans or we may want to start over,” added Rich. “There is really no timeline for development right now, so we have time to decide on what we can do to utilize the land.” Talks about General Electric donating the land first started nearly 17 years ago. Then City Manager John Bennett and former Rome Mayor Ronnie Wallace (LR IV), now of Heritage First Bank, worked together with representatives of Floyd County, the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce and legal representatives from Brinson, Askew, Berry Seigler, November 2015 10

Richardson, & Davis, LLP, to move toward developing a contract with GE officials. As negotiations were being made, soil testing at the site in 2000 indicated there were extremely low levels of PCBs in a drainage ditch related to storm water runoff. The property underwent numerous, extensive testing that have since shown the groundwater beneath the property meets stringent water quality standards. Additional investigations have cleared the property, and Georgia Environmental Protection Division has approved the land for both industrial/ commercial and recreational use. The contract finalized between the City and GE states that the City will take ownership of the land, and GE will retain responsibility for the groundwater quality under the site. GE site manager Cody Platt said the property transfer is symbolic of GE’s continual commitment to the Rome and Floyd County community. “GE has worked diligently over the years to address environmental conditions related to the site and to prepare the non-manufacturing property for re-use by the city, beginning with my predecessor, Richard Lester,” said Mr. Platt. “This is a great day and makes all of our hard work well worth the effort.” Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce Chairman Jimmy Byars (LR VI), Hardy Realty said that GE continues to nurture their commitment to the community by investing in the Chamber’s economic and community development program, Partners in Prosperity. As a corporate citizen, GE continues to make use of the former plant as a warehouse and continues their environmental restoration efforts in Rome and Floyd County. “On behalf of the Chamber, I want to thank GE for their generous donation to the City of Rome,” added Mr. Byars.
