2016 Chairman of the Board, Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce

NEW BUSINESS / NEW JOBS

(L) Chamber Board Chairman, Curtis Gardner along with Floyd County Commissioner, Rhonda Wallace and Rome Mayor Jamie Doss welcomed Sykes VP, Jack Egan during a Chamber press conference. (R) Several of Sykes Rome new employees enjoyed a visit from their company’s superhero during the Sykes Job Fair at The Forum.

Sykes Enterprises Opens Customer Contact Center With a potential for as many at 500 new jobs, Senior Vice-President Jack Egan made the announcement on August 3rd at the Chamber that his company, Sykes Enterprises would occupy a building at 21 Legacy Drive in the Berry Corporate Center, and open this year. Chamber officials generated the lead during a Montreal recruiting trip that was sponsored by the Chamber’s Partners in Prosperity program. According to Egan, they selected Rome for a new Customer Contact Center because of its people and potential workforce. He explained that several years ago, the company was forced to choose locations with high-tech, fiber optic capabilities, but today those essentials to his business are everywhere and they now concentrate first and foremost on people. They were

pleased to find a fairly new building that will require minimum renovation. The company has already obtained a building permit for their location on Legacy Drive in the Berry Corporate Center. Sykes is a global leader in providing comprehensive customer contact management solutions in the business process outsourcing (BPO) arena. They provide an array of sophisticated customer contact management solutions to Global 2000 companies around the world, primarily in the telecommunications, financial services, technology, healthcare, transportation and leisure industries. Sykes Enterprises, Inc. of Tampa, Florida employs more than 54,000 worldwide. Their customer services are delivered through multiple communication channels including phone, e-mail, social media, text

messaging and chat. The Sykes Rome center will emphasize inbound customer care and technical support. As promised at the Sykes’ initial press conference, they held a large job fair at The Forum in downtown Rome and were successful in offering jobs to over 130 new employees who interviewed that day. Job training is set to begin by the middle of September and the center will begin normal operations six to eight weeks later, in early November. “Our typical customer service jobs will initially pay in the $10.50 to $12 an hour range, with management level positions ranging at the $40,000+ annual salary,“ according to Jack Egan. For more information about the company and jobs available visit their website at www.sykes.com/rome.

It is exciting to see heavy equipment moving dirt on Highway 53 North at 140—a move designed to attract more manufacturing jobs to Floyd County. According to Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord, “We have been working to get this site graded for a while, so we are thrilled to see earth moving equipment on site.” The North Floyd Industrial Rail Site has 100 acres total and about 2/3 of the property is being leveled. The site is specifically for an industrial user and large employer.

Project: NORTH FLOYD INDUSTRIAL RAIL SITE Location: Highway 53 North at GA 140 Acres: 100 acres Zoning: Heavy Industrial Certification: GA GRAD Ownership: Rome-Floyd Development Authority and Development Authority of Floyd County Site Amenities: • Norfolk Southern Rail adjacent • Clean environmental site

The site was recently classified as a Georgia Ready for Accelerated Development (GRAD Certified) which is a site rating system of the State of Georgia. The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce worked for several years to earn this certification. The site is directly adjacent to the main line of Norfolk Southern; therefore, the development authorities prefer to sell to a company that needs rail service. A 68-acre tract is currently being graded to expedite development of the industrial site for a large employer. According to Heather Seckman, “The time is right for this property to be sold. The Chamber along with Floyd County and the City of Rome have several companies interested in the site and a graded tract shows them the community is committed to recruiting new primary jobs to Rome and Floyd County. The widening of GA. 140 adds to the attractiveness of this site.” “I am so proud of our Manager Jamie McCord and our Floyd County staff who worked hard to get to this point of grading. This is an opportunity to bring more jobs to Rome and Floyd County, and I’m excited about that,” said Floyd County Commission Chairman, Larry Maxey.

Gordon Smith came back to his hometown on Friday, July 29 to celebrate the grand opening of Rome’s new Tennis Center at Berry College. Smith, currently USTA Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, talked about growing up in Rome and learning to play the game of tennis on four courts near Barron Stadium that didn’t even have side fencing. Smith went on to lead the University of Georgia tennis team to SEC titles in the early 1970’s. He now heads the sport’s national organization, the United States Tennis Association, with offices in New York City. Sammy Rich, Rome’s City Manager, noted the opportunity for tennis and as well as economic development. He sited the fact that hundreds of auto tags from outside Floyd County filled the parking lot at the center’s first tournament. Smith praised the center as one of the finest in the nation, larger than the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the site of the US Open. He said the new center was “hugely important to tennis in the Southeast and in the United States. Less than a handful of communities in the entire country come close to matching what you have here.” Berry College President, Dr. Stephen Briggs, invited everyone to “savor this moment, as it had taken a long six years to arrive at this opening day. Rome has come a long way toward expanding its profile,“ he added. Berry College donated the land for the project and will assist in managing the center. PHOTOS: Above Left: Gordon Smith praises the new center as Kevin Brundle, Director of Tennis & Assistant Director of Professional Tennis Management at Berry College, listens to the program. Above Right: Many of the center’s hard-working and loyal supporters enjoy the program on the Opening Day. Partnerships such as these as well as rentals and season programming contribute to keeping the Jewel of Broad Street alive for future generations.

TIM REYNOLDS “ON COMING HOME...” When asked about performing to the hometown crowd on October 30th at the Historic DeSoto Theatre, Tim Reynolds said, “ I love coming home. I always feel super welcome. I’ve grown so much as a person and it’s always really cool when different folks who have helped me along the way come out to support me, sometimes even my elementary school teachers will show up at a concert.” Tim added that, “A lot of people have raised me and supported me, they sowed into me at a young age and have truly blessed me.” Tim Reynolds has a clear sense of his music and has stayed loyal to his style noting, “my style and sound have matured but have not changed.” Sharing his own composed music is something Tim looks forward to and believes through his music, he will be able to further share who he is — and it may be something the audience is not expecting. Tim is familiar with the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce having interned during his high school years. “One of the main things I learned during my internship at the Chamber that I take with me always is everyone has different talents, skills and abilities and you can accomplish much when you work together as a team.”
