FREE & low cost activities in Greater Shepparton October 2014 - March 2015

Welcome

Welcome from Mayor Jenny Houlihan Council’s award winning Activities in the Park program encourages Greater Shepparton residents to get out and be active in our local parks. Activities in the Park offers over 200 free and low cost activities for everyone to enjoy. There is a range of interesting and exciting activities to help you stay healthy, active and connected in Greater Shepparton. I would like to especially recognise and give thanks to our sponsors Tatura Milk Industries, Unilever and Parks Victoria. I look forward to hearing about the success of this program and hope you are able to participate.

Welcome by Geva Mentor - Melbourne Vixens “In order for me to give my maximum in training and competition it’s extremely important to lead a healthy lifestyle, which not only incorporates fuelling your body with healthy foods and water, but enough sleep and keeping active to encourage a healthy mind as well as body. I juggle a busy netball schedule for both the Melbourne Vixens and England National side so it’s vital i maintain a balanced lifestyle. Making time and being organised is key, knowing when to have a break and to enjoy the simple things of being active and getting outdoors. After all it’s a great way for me as a non-local to meet and make friends with new people in the community.”

How to get involved •

On Your Bike Greater Shepparton offers cycling enthusiasts a variety of paths and routes to ride. Whether you are seeking a leisurely ride for the family, a scenic bush ride, or the ultimate off road experience, Greater Shepparton has it all.

On your Bike

If you would like to increase your cycling skills, learn the basics of bicycle maintenance or become a more confident rider, then look out for one of these Bicycle Workshops.

Breeze Breeze Rides is an initiative of Cycling Victoria aimed at increasing female participation in cycling. Shepparton Cycling Club took on this initiative in September 2013 and run regular rides, which are open to all ladies and is free of charge. A registration form must be filled out before your first ride, which can be done on-line through: www. breezerides.com.au Contact Kelly Jamieson on: 0408 399 770 or email: breeze@sheppartoncyclingclub.com for more information regarding ongoing rides. Breeze Shepparton are proudly supported by the Shepparton Cycling Club and Leigh Egan Cycles.

BUG Greater Shepparton BUG conducts regular bicycle rides to cater for most levels of fitness. The rides are organised and conducted around beautiful areas in central Victoria with most rides ideally suited to the beginner and average cyclist. Longer distance rides are provided for those members who have higher levels of fitness and seek more challenging rides. The rides are designed to suit a range of abilities but with special emphasis on supporting and encouraging new cyclists. All rides have one thing in common - people enjoying recreational cycling. For more information about riding with BUG, contact Doug Cousins: doug.cousins@bigpond.com or visit: www.sheppbug.com.au

Cycle in Greater Shepparton Contact the Visitor Information Centre on: 1800 808 839 for a free copy of the Cycle in Greater Shepparton booklet, the ultimate guide to cycling in the region. Pedal into a world of cycling with tips and information on safety, extensive details on the shared pathway network, parks and gardens, mountain bike trails, annual events, cycling club details and more!

Geocaching While out walking you may wish to make it more interesting. Combining walking with some basic technology is referred to as GEOCACHING. Geocaching is a free high-tech treasure hunting activity where you use a Global Positioning System (GPS) to find caches hidden by other participants. Geocachers set off to find the cache at the coordinates that they have downloaded from the web to a hand held GPS.

What is a cache? Typically it is a lunch box type container holding a log book, pen and maybe some swappable items. Geocachers write a log in the book about their search, they may swap something they have for something in the box and replace the container exactly as they found it. Caching is all about engaging and exploring areas, some are puzzle based, some take you through several steps before you get to the final point.

For more information on Geocaching in Shepparton visit: www.geocaching.com.au

It’s great weather to get active, but don’t forget to protect yourself from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. The peak sun protection season in Victoria is from September to the end of April. To check the daily protection times go to sunsmart.com.au or download the free SunSmart app. Overexposure to UV rays can cause eye damage, sunburn, premature ageing, and skin damage that can lead to skin cancer. In Australia, sunburn can occur in as little as 11 minutes on a fine summer’s day.
