sam. program. May to Oct 2018

welcome to sam. Shepparton Art Museum’s Program for May to October features an exciting range of exhibitions, programs and activities designed to engage, inspire, inform and invite our audiences to get involved. In May, we're excited to present the first major survey exhibition by leading contemporary Australian artist Raquel Ormella. Internationally and nationally recognised for her work, I hope you get this: Raquel Ormella will feature some of Raquel’s experimental textile works, ranging across subjects as diverse as national identity, Australia’s minerals boom, and social and environmental activism. We are thrilled to be partnering with NETS Victoria, with support from Visions of Australia, and will tour the exhibition nationally following its Shepparton presentation. This is a first for us. The exhibition will be supported by a substantial publication, featuring new writing on Raquel’s work and be beautifully illustrated. This year we are delighted to again present our nationally recognised Indigenous Ceramic Award, SAM’s $20,000 biennial acquisitive prize.

Seven artists have been shortlisted from far North Tiwi Islands, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and New South Wales. I particularly thank all of the artists who applied to the Award and our judges, Stephen Gilchrist and Genevieve Grieves. We thank our generous Major Partners, The Sir Andrew and Lady Fairley Foundation and Mr Allan Myers AC QC. SAM has partnered with Bendigo Art Gallery and La Trobe Art Institute for an artist’s project by leading artist and ceramicist, Damon Moon, in a project which links the collections of these three major institutions in North-central Victoria. Subject/Object is a feature project of Artlands Victoria, Australia’s largest regional arts gathering, this year held in the City of Greater Bendigo and Mount Alexander Shire. For those who like to get their hands in the clay, and celebrate all things creative by making and doing, be sure not to miss out on some of our popular practical workshops, activities, talks and events included in this program. Designed for audiences of all ages, they are a great way of making friends while being actively creative. We look forward to seeing you, your family, and friends at SAM in the coming months. i hope you get this: Raquel Ormella 26 May to 12 August 2018 A NETS Victoria and SAM touring exhibition. I hope you get this: Raquel Ormella brings together a selection of new and recent work by one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists. The exhibition will include a wide variety of media, and particularly draw on Ormella’s experimental textile works, exploring key themes that the artist has consistently developed in her work: social and environmental activism; human and animal relationships; nationalism and national identity.

These recurrent interests are brought together by a consistent engagement with the artist’s voice. Rather than being the site of authority, Ormella’s voice simultaneously expresses an aspiration for connection, while remaining uncertain about whether the communication will work. Curators: Rebecca Coates and Anna Briers.
