welcome to sam. As we head towards the warmer months, we are excited to share Craftivism. Dissident Objects and Subversive Forms with you – our major summer exhibition. This collaborative, playful and immersive exhibition will feature the work of 18 contemporary Australian artists and artist collectives. We are again looking forward to highlighting artistic practice from the region when SAM goes local. SAM Local Spotlight is a fantastic opportunity for an artist to exhibit a body of work at SAM, which also encourages, stimulates and promotes local and regional cultural activities as part of SAM’s annual program. craftivism. dissident objects and subversive forms. 24 November 2018 to 17 February 2019

A SAM and NETS Victoria touring exhibition. Craftivism. Dissident Objects and Subversive Forms presents the work of 18 contemporary Australian artists who utilise craft based materialities with a political intent. Broadening our understanding of craft-making traditions, the artists in this exhibition subvert and extend these forms as reflections of activism and social change. While some respond directly to artistic or political movements, others encourage social connection between community members or require participatory activation through collective processes. Drawing on a long historical lineage, Craftivism. Dissident Objects and Subversive Forms enables viewers to rethink craft in a new light.
