f you’re considering Springfield as a potential home for your new or established business, you’re in good company. Among metropolitan areas of similar size, we rank second in the country when it comes to economic development that results in capital investment, according to Site Selection magazine’s March 2012 issue. We’ve ranked in the top five for the past six years. That success comes as no surprise to area business owners. Located on I-70, between I-71 and I-75, Springfield has its own public airport and is situated less than an hour from international airports in Dayton and Columbus. In addition, our
community is less than a day’s drive to nearly 60% of the population of the U.S., making Springfield the ideal location for companies that need to move products quickly and transport key personnel across the country efficiently. And we offer a much better value when it comes to costs for facilities and labor. There are existing facilities for a range of businesses and industries while new construction, especially for technology-based businesses, is taking place all over Clark County. Skilled labor to staff your company is readily available, thanks to the workforce development partnership between the

arly in its history, all roads led to Springfield. Literally. For more than a decade, we were the final stop on the National Road, which brought thousands of bright, enterprising individuals here and resulted in our community becoming home to their ideas and innovation. From the world-famous Champion reaper to the world’s largest developer of new rose varieties, our community was founded on great ideas. And, we made sure those ideas were safeguarded – Harry Toulmin, the most prominent patent attorney in the early 20th century, had his offices in the beautiful
Bushnell Building located in the heart of downtown Springfield. The Wright Brothers secured seven patents for their flying machine in Toulmin’s office. The architecture in our historic districts, most notably East High Street and South Fountain Avenue, are tangible evidence of the wealth and innovation that are a vital component of our history. Visitors can tour the South Fountain Historic District to view late 19th century homes. East High Street – known as “Millionaires Row” for its opulent Victorian and Queen Anne mansions – was once home to luminaries such as Ohio Governor Asa Bushnell and automotive

organization in 1927 – honors the courage and sacrifice of the country’s founding mothers. The 12 statues were placed along the National Road from Maryland to California. The beloved statue’s new downtown location is just a block away from the keeper of our community’s history – the Heritage Center of Clark County. Acclaimed as one of the nation’s finest regional museums, the Heritage Center chronicles life in Springfield through some 200,000 artifacts and interactive displays. Just one trip through the museum and you’ll understand why we are passionate about preserving our history as we move our community into the future. The Springfield Preservation Alliance works to preserve our existing architectural resources and raise public appreciation of these treasures through tours, lectures and special programs. Their walking tours are a must for any visitor or resident. Our past still shines through as we move toward a bright future. While we draw on the great ideas from our past, we’re nurturing great ideas from our residents, whether those ideas are in business, the arts or technology. Our innovative spirit is the driving force in the reinvention of our downtown and is helping expand our notion of business. The exquisite collections and beautiful backdrop of the Springfield Museum of Art earned it a prestigious Smithsonian Affiliate designation in 2012, making it the only Smithsonian Affiliate Art Museum in Ohio. With a coveted American artists permanent collection, the museum features Smithsonian and other traveling exhibits such as the recent “Full Deck” skateboard art exhibit - for art lovers of all ages. From Mozart to Copeland, Vivaldi to Zimmer, the 69 year-old Springfield Symphony Orchestra celebrates the finest composers from the past and the present through both classical and modern multimedia performances held at 1,500-seat Clark State Performing Art Center, in the heart of downtown.

A Man and His Reaper Gives City its Name

n the mid-1850s, a local man invented a harvesting machine that, by virtue of winning so many competitions at state fairs, became known as “the Champion reaper.” William Whitely’s machine became so popular that Springfield became known as the “Champion City.” Whitely’s design made such a dramatic impact on the industry of farming that a patent model of his machine resides in the Smithsonian Institution. In addition to securing a promising title for our city, Whitely and business partner Jerome Fassler created an agricultural implements operation – The 16

Champion Company – which grew to become the largest facility of its kind in the world. During the 1880s, the company, which employed more than 2,000 workers, was the world’s largest manufacturer of farm implements. Later, The Champion Company became one of the five companies that merged to become International Harvester. International, now known as Navistar and still a business force in Springfield, has long been a part of our community’s history. The farm machinery business spurred the creation of one of Springfield’s most-famed companies,
Crowell-Collier Publishing. Conceived by P.P. Mast to produce Farm & Fireside magazine which promoted his company’s farm implements, Crowell-Collier became the publisher of some of the country’s foremost magazines including Woman’s Home Companion, American Weekly, Collier’s Farm News and Household Journal. In the decades that followed, Springfield residents remained convinced that their hometown was a great place to live. That opinion has been showcased on a national level in the pages of Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report. In 1983, Newsweek — in its 50th anniversary issue that revolved entirely around Springfield —

Advanced placement offerings at the high school level result in an impressive degree of student success on AP college-placement tests. The district also

it a haven for fishermen, bikers, boaters, campers, hikers and runners. Water adventures continue downstream with canoeing on Buck Creek and white-water kayak sports at the new ECO Sports Corridor. The Buck Creek Whitewater Project, the idea that gave life to ECO Sports, has developed two sites – at the Springfield Museum of Art and Snyder Park – where thrill-seekers can kayak through the rapids. When completed, the project will feature six miles of waterway fun. If golf is your game, we have some ideal spots. Greater Springfield boasts nine regulation golf courses including the

Springfield’s park system, which is part of the National Trail Parks and Recreation District, has long been the envy of other Ohio cities. Concert in the Park at Turner Pavilion Springfield Museum of Art, the only Smithsonian Affiliate art museum in Ohio, and hosts our annual Summer Arts Festival at its Turner Pavilion. The park also boasts a playground, hiking trails and amateur bouldering on its scenic cliffs. Reid Park is home to two 18-hole golf courses. The Clark County Parks District includes several local area parks including: George Rogers Clark Park, Hertzler House, Davidson Interpretive Center, Estel Wenrick Wetlands, Little Miami Scenic Trail and Prairie Grass Trail. The mission of the CCPD is to preserve our nature and history through active stewardship of the assets in Springfield and beyond. Spending the day at George Rogers, which is the site of the Hertzler House and is adjacent to the Davidson Interpretive Center, will transport you to another time in history. The Hertzler House is the restored home of Daniel Hertzler, a mid-19th century entrepreneur and land owner. The Davidson Interpretive Center sits on what was a Shawnee Indian settlement and the site of the Battle of Peckuwe, the largest battle of the American Revolution west of the Allegheny Mountains. American Colonel George Rogers Clark attacked the settlement, driving out the Shawnee and creating opportunities for colonial settlers. Clark County rests at the center of 250 miles of biking and recreational trails stretching across five counties, passing over a variety of terrains. The Little Miami Scenic Trail, which connects Springfield to Yellow Springs, is a popular 10-mile trek that leads to John Bryan State Park and the Glen Helen Nature Preserve. Youth recreational opportunities are almost limitless, from organized sports to not-so-organized fun, such as Splash Zone Water Park, Mitchell Avenue Skate Park or the Family Indoor Ice Arena planned for downtown. Springfield invites you to come out and play. greaterspringfield.com
