Springfield’s “Central Park” was established in 1895 as a gift from local businessmen and philanthropists, John and David Snyder. Its creative design is the work of noted landscape architect, Herman Haerlin, with architectural gems by Robert Gotwald. The extraordinary entrance arch at Western Avenue is located just blocks from downtown Springfield. The park now includes an 18-hole golf course and whitewater features.

Heritage Center Museum 117 S. Fountain Ave | 937-324-0657 heritagecenter.us Step back in time and witness the clash of cultures at the Battle of Piqua in Frontier Theatre, accompany the Crabill Family Conestoga wagon on its journey to Springfield and see how the National Road brought people and goods to the region. Rare artifacts and unique displays reveal struggles for equality, changing technology and slices of Americana to which everyone can relate. Located in historic downtown Springfield and built in 1890, this newly renovated facility, extending an entire city block, is now home to Clark County’s “Smithsonian.” Inside, you’ll find a research library and archives, museum, exhibition hall, and gift shop. This is truly the story of America’s Heartland. The spectacular City Building and Market, a Richardsonian Romanesque masterpiece by local architect Charles A.
Cregar, is now home to the Heritage Center of Clark County. This history museum and archive opens a window on seven generations of local and national history. The museum assembles priceless artifacts into exhibits interpreting America’s fascinating story. One of the museum’s greatest artifacts is the building itself. Designed in the late 1890s by Cregar, it is strongly influenced by Henry Hobson Richardson’s Alleghany County Courthouse in Pittsburgh. Cregar was Springfield’s most prolific local architect, designing Kelly’s Arcade, St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, St. John’s Lutheran Church and numerous other local landmarks before his death in 1896 at the age of 39. Each year, the Heritage Center hosts approximately 30,000 visitors. This includes around 50 organizations and over 9,000 students.

Heritage Center A stunning museum that houses not only Springfield and Clark County’s history, but is also a rich tour of Americana and the westward migration of the United States. Allow at least one hour to take everything in.

Hartman Rock garden What began as a modest concrete fish pond in H.G. (Ben) Hartman’s backyard is now revered as a folk art masterpiece. The Hartman Rock Garden includes over 250,000 individual stones that combine a mixture of history, religion and depression-era pop culture. Open daily, dawn to dusk.

madonna of the trail The famed Madonna of the Trail statue now stands regally over National Road Commons in downtown. Originally commissioned by the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, twelve such Madonna statues were placed along the National Old Trails Road extending from Maryland to California, in each of the 12 states the road passed through.

DAVIDSON INTERPRETIVE CENTER 5638 Lower Valley Pike 937-882-6000 The Davidson Interpretive Center is located adjacent to George Rogers Clark Park, the site of the Revolutionary War Battle of Peckuwe. The center includes interpretive displays and educational programs.

Clarence J. Brown Reservoir 2800 Croft Road 937-882-9216 The David Crabill House is of late Federal design. It is located in Moorefield Township, Clark County, Ohio, on the grounds of the Clarence J. Brown Dam and Reservoir. It is of the 18251830 style architecture. It was restored, starting in 1973, and was open to the public after completion.
Daniel Hertzler House George Rogers Clark Park 930 S. Tecumseh Road 937-882-6000 The Pennsylvania Bank-style house is furnished in the preCivil War 1850s period style. The house was built by Daniel Hertzler – a wealthy mill owner, who legend has it, still haunts the house to this day. Open on Thursday afternoons and by appointment.
Ohio Masonic Home
A.B. Graham Memorial Park 31 N. Limestone St. The park, honoring the founder of 4-H, is the site of the first meeting of the “Boys and Girls Agricultural Club.” The beautiful sculpture of Graham was created by local artist, Mike Major.
DT&I Depot 147 W. Mound St., South Charleston 937-462-7277 The D T & I Depot, located in South Charleston, was built in the winter of 1878. This

depot and railroad was once owned by Henry Ford to use as transportation to and from Detroit. Excursion train rides are offered once a year. Here, visitors may also see an 1820’s log cabin.
Ohio’s Historic National Road Route 40 was recently designated as an AllAmerican Road. The National Road runs straight through the heart of Springfield with many historical stops along the way, including a number of structures originally built to accommodate travelers in Conestoga wagons.
United States Air Force Museum Wright Patterson Air Force Base Wright Patterson Air Force Base 937-255-3286 nationalmuseum.af.mil With 10 acres of exhibits under one roof, the museum is the largest aviation museum in the world. The museum houses an Imax Theatre and 300 aircraft and missiles in addition to many historical displays.
2655 W. National Road 937-325-1531 Built of rough-cut buff stone, the Ohio Masonic Home originally provided rooms for masons and their wives or orphaned children. Bushnell Hall now holds administrative offices for the retirement community with various onsite facilities. The architect for the building was John Eisenman of Cleveland, Ohio.

WESTCOTT HOUSE T
he Burton J. Westcott House has recently undergone an extensive restoration, returning the historic structure to its original grandeur. The Westcott House, built in 1908, is a unique example of Prairie Style architecture. The Westcott House not only embodied Frank Lloyd Wright’s innovative Prairie School architectural design but also extended Wright’s concept of relating the building to its site by means of a terrace, a pool, gardens, and other landscape elements. An extensive pergola capped with an intricate wooden trellis connects the detached carriage house to the main house, a design element included in only a few other Prairie Style houses. The Darwin D. Martin residence, built in 1904 and located in Buffalo, New York, incorporates this concept. Through the cooperative efforts of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy and The Westcott House Foundation, today The Westcott House is an important rediscovery, a notable, newlyunearthed and revitalized example of Wright’s legacy. The Westcott House plays host to a number of special events and the museum store offers a unique collection of local artisan and design-related gifts. 1340 E. built in 1879 and returned to active use in 1984. Known for its phenomenal natural acoustics, it has hosted countless musicians, singers and productions.
The Gammon House 620-622 Piqua Place 937-322-8359 Built in the 1850s, the Gammon House was an Underground Railroad site. Originally owned by a black abolitionist named George Gammon, the famous stop features secret passages leading into the attic and a tunnel into the basement. The site is currently under renovation.
South Fountain Historic District Unlike East High Street, South Fountain blends unique mid-sized vernacular houses with high-style Victorian mansions. Prominent Americans like Oliver S. Kelly (403), William N. Whitely (1107), and Francis W. Bookwalter (611) are counted among the district’s founding residents.

Bushnell, a major industrialist in Springfield and Clark County.

Main St. 937-322-7668 pennsylvaniahousemuseum. info The 24-room former stagecoach inn, built in 1839 along the Historic National Road during the coach and wagon era, includes an extensive display of antique furnishings, antique dolls and one of the largest antique button collections in the U.S. David Snively built the Federal-style Pennsylvania House along the newlyconstructed National Road. This tavern and inn was an important stopover for livestock drovers and pioneers traveling by foot, on horseback or in Conestoga wagons during the 19th century westward expansion of the United States. Closed as an inn after the Civil War, it then served as a doctor’s clinic, boarding house and secondhand shop before falling into total disrepair. The Lagonda Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution saved it from demolition in 1939 and have owned and operated it as a museum since. The Pennsylvania House was the boyhood home of Dr. Isaac Funk, of Funk & Wagnalls dictionary fame, whose parents operated the inn during the 1840s.
The Women’s Town Club 805 E. High St. 937-322-1201 The Buchwalters lived in this home, which is the site of the Buchwalter statue. Clementine Berry Buchwalter was the founder of the Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs, formed in 1894. Today, the federation is the largest international organization of volunteer women in the world.

Whitewater Buck Creek is now whitewater country! Thanks to the removal of low-head dams and significant in-stream improvements, downtown Springfield now boasts recreational whitewater features for kayakers. The first “play” area is located directly behind the Springfield Museum of Art (107 Cliff Park Road). The second, larger area, is located within Snyder Park. Both sites are “park & play” facilities. Buck Creek State Park
MAD RIVER FISHING Ohio’s oldest trout stream is the Mad River. Stocking of this river began in the late 1800s with the introduction of brook trout. Then in 1884, rainbow trout were introduced to the stream; and in 1931, ODNR switched to stocking brown trout in the stream. Today the stream is stocked annually with 6”-8” brown trout to supplement the population. Fly fishing is good on the Mad River, as there are good hatches of mayflies, caddis flies, and other popular trout foods throughout the spring, summer, and fall months.

Visitors enjoy the many wetlands, broad meadows and wildlife at this diverse park. The 2,120-acre C.J. Brown Reservoir at Buck Creek State Park is popular for walleye, bluegill, catfish, and bass. The park offers 26 twobedroom cottages situated in a wooded area with several offering a view of the lake in addition to 89 electric and 22 non-electric camp sites.
Boasting more than 7.5 miles of hiking trails and a scenic 7.5-mile bridle trail, the park offers plenty of opportunities for nature study, bird watching and other wildlife observation year round. During the winter, the trail is also open to snowmobiling, weather permitting.
