This shoot was going to be a gamble from the word go! Due to bad weather, often typical with island shoots, I only had an hours window to photograph this course, from the air, before I was due to catch my flight home. I had chartered a helicopter (not cheap in Mauritius!) which had unfortunately landed on the other side of the golf course to where we had arranged to meet. When we finally met I had only about 10 mins for them to take the doors off - critical for me to get maximum visibility, and to get harnessed in before the cloud was due to cover the island and put it into shade. You can just see the clouds shadows starting to appear on the sea, which luckily gave this image really nice depth.

ocated in the north of the island, Las Palmas is only 20 kilometres from the main airport. While most visitors flock to the south of the island, the north and particularly the capital city, are perfect for those wanting a mixture of city, sea, sun and a few rounds of golf. The climate here is mild all year around making it the perfect winter escape. With a flight time of four hours from the UK, you really can make a long weekend of it.
L
HISTORY. Las Palmas was founded in 1478 and was the capital of all the Canary Islands until the seventeenth century. Christopher Columbus visited here in 1492 on his way to the Americas and in 1595 Sir Francis Drake led a failed attempt to plunder the city. While we revere him as a famous navy captain, the inhabitant of the Canaries know him as a pirate and a plunderer.
It’s well worth taking time to explore the old city centre, its beautiful streets and old Spanish colonial buildings let you get a feel for the history that has shaped the Canary Islands. With cafés and restaurants a plenty to be found in the plazas and backstreets of the city, as well as the opportunity to visit the many seafood restaurants to be found here, there is no need to be hungry. A walk along the Avenida Marítima, a boulevard following the coast, is a must, as is a visit to the to the city’s premier beach Playa de las Canteras. SEGWAY TOURS. One of the best ways to get around the capital is on a Segway. Segway LPA located in the heart of the city are on hand to train even the most unfamiliar to this new form of transport. A ride along the boulevard and into the old town is a lot of fun and a good way to see as much as possible.

GOLF & THE CITY
GOLF. Not far from the city you’ll found the Caldera Bandama, a breath-taking volcanic crater. This amazing natural landmark in the islands landscape is well worth a visit, but here, right on the edge of the Caldera you also find the Bandama Golf Club (Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas). This is the oldest golf course on the island, founded in 1891 and designed by Mackenzie Ross. Golfers are treated to great golf along with beautiful scenery and flora, as well as the imposing caldera. And after a game of golf it’s well worth to enjoy a meal and glass of wine at Bodegón Vandama. This unique restaurant is located in an old farmhouse close to the golf course. The restaurant specialises in grilled meat cooked over wood fires, along with its own wine produced from grapes grown in the vineyards surrounding the farmhouse. This a very popular place, especially at weekends, so if possible, book before you begin your round of golf. TIERRA GUANCHE. Located further inland, but well worth the trip is Tierra Guanche, this traditional restaurant serves a mouthwatering array of traditional dishes. After a meal, why not visit the attached shop specializing in local products. In the basement, you will find a vast selection of local wines and cheeses.

t’s sometimes difficult to separate fact from fiction; the puff from the hard-nose truth. I don’t know about you, but these days I find the glitz and glamour can easily dazzle while the incessant razzmatazz can drown out what’s really important. Keeping sight of the essence of something can be a task in itself. When it comes to Donald Trump, determining the man from the myth is almost impossible. You might have more success unravelling Trump from his golf properties, if only hypothetically. After all, he has amassed an impressive portfolio of resorts that are irrefutably impressive in their own right. Trump International near Aberdeen has a remarkable layout with towering dunes and testing terrain, while Trump International at Doonbeg has all the romance of west Ireland as it overlooks the wild Atlantic Ocean. But the jewel in Trump’s golden golfing crown is undoubtedly Turnberry, perched on the west coast of Scotland.
28
GREAT GOLF MAGAZINE
This is, after all, a four-time Open Championship venue, where Stewart Cink ended Tom Watson’s unthinkable dream and where Nick Price triumphed with a blistering final round of 66. Before that, Greg Norman won his first major here in 1986 and nine years earlier, the then triumphant Watson overcame the gracious Jack Nicklaus in the fabled Duel in the Sun. All brilliant spectacles played on a remarkable course. ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT. Turnberry is special, but in typical Trump style, the American tycoon saw room for improvement and launched a bold £100 million development plan as soon as he acquired the Ayrshire resort for £36 million in 2014. The farreaching proposals included digging up the fabled links turf, dispelling with a number of holes and re-routing a number of others. Perhaps understandably there was concern among Turnberry members.
Turnberry.qxp_St Enodoc 29.12.2016 15.18 Side 4
That concern was reportedly quashed during the initial presentation by Trump and renowned international golf architect Martin Ebert, of Mackenzie & Ebert. During the meeting in which the far-reaching plans were officially unveiled, the room supposedly fell silent as the details were revealed. When the amassed crowd was asked for any questions, none were forthcoming. Perhaps the members were in shock. Perhaps they realised they could do little about the grandiose scheme, but the impression I get is that most were simply blown away by what they saw. After all, it’s not every day you see a championship course like Turnberry, with all its heritage and glory, receive plans for a farreaching nip and tuck. The project was unashamedly ambitious and yet it was completed within just eight months. By the time I pitched up at the Ayrshire resort towards the end of September, the course had been ceremoniously opened a couple of months earlier. The
reports emanating from those lucky enough to play it were conclusively and unanimously positive. Could it be true? Had the controversial Mr. Trump actually improved Turnberry? SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT. I had photographed the course on a
number of occasions and knew only too well the beauty it held. To make it better would require daring and significant investment. As it turns out, Trump had both. “The new layout of Ailsa respects the course’s original design and offers an incredible golfing experience for amateur and elite players alike. However, this is not change for the sake of it,” explains Ralph Porciani, Turnberry’s general manager. “The potential to take the Ailsa to a new level was unexpectedly high. As a result, this bold transformation has created what must surely become the most exciting links course in the world, underpinned by an incredible eight-hole coastal sequence. Such 29
Turnberry.qxp_St Enodoc 29.12.2016 15.18 Side 5
a stunning stretch of seaside holes must be unmatched in the golfing world. The Ailsa course has been reborn and it has to be played to be believed.” I took him at his word and teed it up with one of Turnberry’s most recently qualified golf professionals, and almost immediately the changes rolled in. On the opening hole, for example, the fairway has been lengthened to create more of a sweeping dogleg, which now incorporates a serious second shot into a beautiful new green complex. Turnberry’s easy opener was no more. Almost all the fairway bunkers have been converted into natural, rough-edged hazards as per Ebert’s instructions, who used historical aerial photography to provide evidence of the course’s original erratic layout. More in keeping with the rugged Ayrshire coastline, these ragged traps present an organic test in accordance with Turnberry’s past. But these are only slight amends. 30
GREAT GOLF MAGAZINE
SMOOTH GREENS. As well as a rethink for almost all fairway
bunkers, Turnberry’s greens have also had a makeover – not that you would notice. Each one is smooth and true, with no signs of their mass reconstruction. It is hard to believe the course has gone through such a dramatic change, but plays as if it had been in situ for decades. And yet, these are also merely precursors to the main event. After playing the first five holes, each of which has been tweaked and adjusted to make the most of the landscape, the sixth hole is accessed by walking up through the dunes and behind the new 18th tee. The walk takes you from the protection of the course onto exposed headland which was previously unavailable. It shows you exactly how close you are to the Irish Sea and arching beach that runs alongside Turnberry. It provides you with a view that was always there but just out of reach.
Turnberry.qxp_St Enodoc 29.12.2016 15.18 Side 6
The walk leads you to the now much shorter par three sixth, with a green perched on top of a natural dune. With the southerly gusts helping, it was little more than a pitching wedge for us, but when the winds blow in the opposite direction or straight off the sea, goodness knows what will be needed. “This work will be carefully and studiously crafted, bringing this already great masterpiece to a level that even it has never attained,” Trump proclaimed when he first presented the changes. “There will be nothing better or more magnificent anywhere.” In an effort to separate the grandstanding from the facts, let’s imagine what would be required to achieve these claims; to make Turnberry attain a stature that until now was beyond its reach. Firstly, the development would need to remove any weaknesses on a course regularly voted among the top 20 in the world. Secondly, those frailties would need to be replaced with elements
that would be viewed as defining features on any other course. A tricky task in anyone’s book. TURNBERRY TWEAKS. Until now, the changes at Turnberry had
been justified and clear. They were the kind of tweaks one might expect to see on a championship course, although seeing them all at once was quite a shock. What came next, however, took the project to a whole new level. The ninth was always a weak link on the front nine, apart from the iconic exposed tee and stunning lighthouse backdrop that is. Nevertheless, playing a blind shot on to a hog’s back fairway only to find a bland approach to a sedate green never set the heather alight, so Ebert and his team set about changing it to something that would. “The new ninth hole will certainly capture the imagination of 31
Turnberry.qxp_St Enodoc 29.12.2016 15.18 Side 7
everyone and will really take the breath away in terms of the vista from the tee and the challenge of the carry across the bay,” his proposals announced. “The tee shot from the main tees will be very playable but the test from the championship tee will be to carry a minimum of 200 yards and to control the run out to the green.” The new 235-yard par three ninth is nothing short of a golfing gem. The overriding feeling on the tee is a combination of anxiety and challenge with the merest glimmers of hope that you could nail it and use the contours of the green to get it close. First, however, you have to play over a craggy bay with all the indignation that could follow a topped drive bouncing off the rocks… pinball style. It is everything you could want from a oneshooter and it is a huge improvement. What’s more, it sets a precedent for what follows. Turnberry’s active lighthouse and surrounding buildings have been renovated creating a phenomenal half-way house with probably the most impressive terraced area you are ever likely to wander into after nine holes. A stunning patio accompanies the bar and dining facilities, with views across the Irish Sea to the beautiful Isle of Arran. What’s more, you can stay there.
which has seen 103 guest rooms refurbished with plenty of chic tartans and king-sized mahogany beds topped with comfy, luxurious mattresses. My room was ample in size with a generous bathroom edged in gold and a huge, 65-inch TV that made you feel that the news presenters were in the room with you. Impressive and perturbing all at the same time. The rebirth of Turnberry is long overdue, but it is not without its frustrations. Despite the hotel being open for a number of weeks, the smell of newly applied paint still lingers as if the place isn’t quite ready yet. Chandeliers light up the reception areas, only to reveal the hotel is relatively empty for such a big property, save for the obligatory group of golfers enjoying a post-round debrief. There have been mixed reviews and there are certainly improvements still to be made, but Turnberry is a work in progress. For instance, the spa will be sprucing up over the winter period. It is a huge undertaking to create, as Trump puts it, “the finest golf resort of its kind anywhere in the world”, and it will take time. However, from solely a golfing perspective, Turnberry may well be on the way to making the improbable, entirely possible. GGM
STAY AND PLAY. Situated in the heart of the lighthouse is a new,
luxurious presidential suite featuring two double bedrooms each with a private bathroom and balcony. It is the ultimate getaway – at a price. With a night’s stay starting at £3,500 and nothing but the huge TVs and crashing waves outside to keep you company, it might require a certain kind of guest with deep pockets and a love of isolation to enjoy this bolt hole. The lighthouse takes its styling notes from the revamped hotel, 32

BENTLEY, A CAR OF CONTRASTS Not all of us can afford a brand new Bentley, but Angus Davis discovers a different, tempting way to buy one of these classic cars when he considers a Pre-Owned option… Photo by Bentley

he word ‘used’ implies an object that has seen better days, with a high percentage of its serviceable life already eroded. However, by virtue of its high quality creation, no such label could be applied to a Bentley, an automotive thoroughbred from Crewe. Indeed, once registered to a former keeper, a ‘Pre-Owned Bentley’ proffers many years of serene driving ahead. Recently I was invited to sample the opulent world of Bentley ownership, albeit on the proviso I handed the keys back after a week of stewardship. My luxurious chariot was a gorgeous Continental Flying Spur, equipped with a 6.0 litre twin-turbo charged 12-cylinder engine. It was presented in onyx black and lined with a luxurious leather interior. The first thing I noticed about the paintwork was that it still retained the same blemish-free, abyss-like finish it possessed when the car left the production line in Crewe back in 2012. Typically,
T 36

a Pre-Owned Bentley is 33 months old, hence my press loan was a smidgen older but looked no worse for it. FINANCIAL SENSE. With a retail price of £59,849, purchasing this Bentley Continental Flying Spur would involve making a significant capital outlay, hence the company’s gold-plated warranty scheme makes a lot of sense. However, when contrasting the cost of the Bentley with a new, lowly specified Mercedes S class or BMW 7 series, the Bentley starts to look like incredible value for money. I’ve always admired both the Mercedes and the BMW. In fact, I once owned a 730d. However, I think a Bentley is from a class above – its leather upholstery has sumptuousness, usurping any other vehicle. My press loan vehicle had slight patination of the leather, denoting its age, but this merely enriched the character of the seats and accorded greater suppleness.
Bentley2.qxp_Layout 1 15.12.2016 13.11 Side 4
Where Bentley financially surpasses a new Mercedes or BMW is with its residual values. A large percentage of any car’s value is lost early in its life, making a Pre-Owned vehicle a sensible option. A wisely procured Pre-Owned Bentley, with full service history and the backing of the brand’s extensive warranty, will retain a higher percentage of its value when compared with a new Mercedes or BMW. Indeed, the depreciation curve for the Bentley assumes an almost flat trajectory by comparison. This is reflected in the comparatively low monthly payments offered by various products from Bentley Financial Services. Nevertheless, talk of matters such as money seems a tad vulgar, especially when in the esteemed company of this gorgeous car. INTERIOR DECOR. When I entered the cabin of the Continental
Flying Spur, I immediately appreciated its spacious, stylish interior. I am a tall chap, measuring 6’ 5”, and found the Continental Flying Spur
provided sufficient room for me to stretch out. This is the way to travel. The light interior provided an agreeable juxtaposition with the dark exterior colour. A detail I especially liked was the ‘Piano Black Veneer’ dashboard. The dark, almost magma black, hue provided a neoteric alternative to the traditional ‘Burr Walnut Veneer’ I have grown accustomed to seeing on many Bentley models. Ultimately, it is a matter of personal taste and, courtesy of the Pre-Owned stock locator (on Bentley’s website), the prospective purchaser should be able to find their ideal car. The floor of the Continental Flying Spur was adorned with black, deep-pile carpets capable of swallowing a pair of brogues with consummate ease. The dashboard was trimmed in two types of leather, ‘Linen’ and contrasting ‘Beluga’. The Mulliner Driving Specification, including upgraded 20” two-piece alloy wheels, also featured quilted leather seats with headrests, each sporting an embroidered Bentley logo. 37

GREAT CARS
”Over the years I have driven an array of cars and lost my heart on many occasions, however, I can think of few vehicles quite like the Bentley Continental Flying Spur.”
This is a vehicle of contrasts, with traditional organ stop ventilation controls sitting alongside modern satellite navigation and an impressive in-car entertainment system. Traditional craftsmanship and state-of-the art know-how harmoniously co-exist, augmenting the ownership experience. BEHIND THE WHEEL. Like many men of my generation, I enjoy the thrills of an involving ride, cresting an apex with aplomb, courtesy of sharp handling. However, there is often a trade-off, namely a bone-shaking ride which heightens the likelihood of physiotherapy being necessary. Conversely, the ‘luxo-barge’ approach to a suspension set-up robs the enthusiastic driver of any chance of motoring pleasure, albeit all vertebrae remain intact. Bentley seems to have an amazing capacity to craft vehicles that proffer a cos seting ride, paired with smile-inducing manoeuvrability. Despite the Continental Flying Spur weighing circa three tonnes, it can assume balletic poise and grace. This vehicle seems to rewrite the laws of physics. 38

Moreover, this car can also reach 60mph from rest in a mere 5.2 seconds and continue to a terminal speed of 194 mph. Once I had finished with my boy racer antics, I joined the M6 and drove home in luxurious comfort, wafting along in near silent bliss. Over the years I have driven an array of cars and lost my heart on many occasions, however, I can think of few vehicles quite like the Bentley Continental Flying Spur. This is a car which expertly blends tradition with modernity, the dark with the light, the sporty with the serene and the luxurious with the accessible. Edith Piaff once famously sang, ‘Non, je ne regrette rien’. Well, I have some regrets, one being that I have bought new executive saloons which met my requirements at the time but did little more. If only I had considered a Pre-Owned Bentley, I could have enjoyed substantially more, for surprisingly less. GGM

Bunkers and trees, bunkers and trees. This becomes a mantra that keeps going around in my head. Despite my time playing in the sand, I’m quite enjoying myself.
t’s a bizarre fact that in terms of distance, the Côte d’Opale is closer to our offices here in Kent than many of the UK golf locations that we have covered in this issue. There just happens to be a bit of a sea to contend with. But without the sea, there would be no Côte d’Opale or Opal Coast as we would say here in Blighty. It really brings home the fact that there is another world of possibilities right on our doorstep. I set off early in the morning for Dover to catch the 08.10am P&O ferry to Calais. I have golf clubs in the back of the car along with a few spare clothes and camera. The roads are clear and it’s starting to get light. I’m booked in to play Hardelot Les Pins at 1pm so as long as I don’t miss the ferry, it should be a stress free day. My contacts at Côte d’ Opale have spoilt me and booked me in for priority boarding with access to the Club Lounge. So within no time at all, I am safely parked aboard the ship and sitting enjoying complimentary drinks (non alcoholic I might add) and

chocolates in the P&O Club lounge. The journey takes roughly 90 minutes, not too long, but long enough to enjoy the comforts on offer. I am quickly off the ferry and heading towards the first golf course. HARDELOT. I had a vision of finding myself in the centre of Calais
and lost once I left the ferry, but this was not the case. The route out from the terminal takes you directly onto the major roads and the whole of mainland Europe becomes a possibility. It’s a simple 30-40 minute drive south, and you find yourself in the well known natural tourist resort of Hardelot, with its beautiful coastline and lush pine forests. This area offers many pursuits for those looking for adventure, including walking, riding, sailing and of course, golf. There are two 18 hole courses here, Les Pins and Les Dunes and I am booked in to play Les Pins. This is a par 73 course and was designed by Tom Simpson back in 1931. In the past it has

hosted many high profile tournaments. I have a recurring problem with water hazards, as it seems my ball is attracted to them in a way that can only be described as magical. Well, here is a course with the bare minimum of water hazards so I should be fine. Have I mentioned the other bane of my golf game? Trees! And oh, there are so many of them. Could this possibly be due to the fact that we are in a pine forest? Well, I have plenty of balls, and I can always nip back to the club house after the ninth hole. Got to watch out for the many sand dunes too. What a nice start, to gently ease into a round with a straightforward par-5. Avoid going into the trees and the bunker 250 odd metres up the fairway and all is well. This is a lovely course for amateur and expert alike. The surroundings of pine forest and rolling hills are picturesque and the course itself is well maintained. The fifth is a sneaky par-3, and one that I’ll try to play
carefully. There are bunkers surrounding the green to the front and sides. It’s tempting to just go for it. “You can do it” a voice says inside my head, “one shot and you’re on the green”. I listen to the voice and rise to the challenge and am subsequently rewarded by having to use three more shots to extricate myself from the right hand bunker. After I manage to dig myself out it takes two more shots to finish. Time to move on I think. Bunkers and trees, bunkers and trees. This becomes a mantra that keeps going around in my head. Despite my time playing in the sand, I’m quite enjoying myself. It’s a beautiful course and the sun has come out. I play rather well on the 9th, a par-4 that doglegs left. I manage to avoid the bunkers that guard the fairway and finish the hole with a bogy. No stopping now I’m on a roll, I still have a supply of golf balls (only two missing in action). By the time I reach the 17th, I’m quite exhausted. But this par-3 soon perks me up. It’s a tee shot 43

down a narrow fairway between trees to the green, and one that I manage, even though the voice in my head is now telling me to play safe! On to the 18th, and from the tee on this par-4, it’s a bit of a blind shot into the valley. I can see the club house in the distance so I’d better make it good. What a way to end my round, I’m on the green in two and complete my round in a rather satisfactory manner. BOULOGNE-SUR-MER. Later I check into the Hotel du Park in Hardelot which is pleasant enough and situated only a few minutes drive from either of the Golf Courses to be found here. In the evening I drive into Boulogne for a bite to eat and a look around. As I head into town following the coast al road, I can reassuringly see the coast of England in the distance. Boulogne has always been popular with the British, and as I walk around the old walled centre of this bustling town, I can
44

see why. Within these old walls can be found quaint narrow streets lined with cafes, shops and restaurants. The square in the centre is an excellent place to view the Cathedral where, in the crypt you can still see the stone cannon balls employed by Henry VIII when he besieged and briefly captured the town from his base in Calais. It’s worth knowing that Boulogne is France’s biggest fishing port so you can expect some excellent fresh seafood dishes should you decide to eat. Afterwards, a walk around the top of the very substantial wall that surrounds the old town will give you marvellous views of the old port and surrounding area. WIMEREUX. After a restful night at the Hotel du Park Hardelot, I head for Wimereux which is situated a little to the north of Boulogne. This golf course is located next to a stunning coastline with wide sandy beaches and views up the coast to the town of

Ambleteuse, with its prominent old fort in the harbour. It’s a windy day in September so I resist the urge to go for a swim but spend a good half an hour walking along the shore. I make a mental note to return here for a beach trip next year with the family. Wimereux is a wonderful Par 72 links course, and full of many challenges. The first hole is a par-5 up hill. You have to take the cross wind into serious consideration on a day like today. I have always liked the sensation of wind and can forgive it if it turns what in my opinion are excellent shots, into major ball hunts in the ruff. I find the front 9 to be so full of character, from the par-3 on the second, which is a quirky little number onto a green nestled in a sheltered dip in the land, then on to the fourth which is an excellent uphill par-4. The surroundings are breathtaking and there is the ever present sensation and smell of the sea.
ST OMER. I leave Wimereux and head straight on to Saint Omer. Two golf courses in one day! I really hope they have a spare buggy for me; otherwise I will be dragging myself around the back nine. I enter the plush club house where I’m met by Thierry Leborgne, the sales manager. We arrange to chat after my round of golf and so off I go to the locker rooms to prepare. Saint Omer, home of the Saint Omer Open is a par 73 course that is spread over wonderful countryside. You find yourself playing across the spectacular Aa valley for quite a few of the holes so unless you want a workout, take a buggy. Having grown up in the West of England, I do like a landscape with a bit of contour, that feeling of not quite knowing what is over the brow of the hill or around the corner, and this is how it feels here. The second hole, which is a par-3, is proof of this. It’s a shot down into the valley below, and quite a drop at that! To emphasise the point, I have to mention that it was on this hole that I lost a

The Opal Coast is just a short ferry or train ride away ball in a tree. It just dropped into the offending woody perennial below me and lodged itself somewhere in the branches. I could not reach my ball but found another one on a lower branch which I decided to play on with. Obviously this was not the first time this tree had created problems for us golfers. This really is my kind of course, as I already mentioned, I like hills, and to be honest, if I had not played Wimereux already, I would have quite enjoyed walking this one. The rolling landscape provides a wonderful backdrop and most definitely a little more flavour to the game. The sixth hole is a nice par-4 that doglegs right. As long as you land on the fairway, there are not too many hazards to overcome unless you are brave enough to try a shortcut over the bunkers and rough to the right. With a score index of 15, it’s quite a relief from the more challenging holes. The eighteenth hole is a great par-5 into that valley again, and up the other side. For me, to carry that far is beyond my means, so it’s a shot into the valley followed by another to get me back up. I am on the green in four and end my round respectably. I meet up with Thierry for a cup of coffee and a chat in the restaurant. Thierry is very passionate about the golf resort and talks about all the work it takes to maintain the high standard of the course. After our coffee he takes me to view the hotel. Situated in a prominent position overlooking the golf course, the hotel is modern and stylish with 54 rooms that overlook either golf course or the forest on the opposite side. The whole place has a smell and sense of newness, even though it has been open for three years. I am rather disappointed that I’m not staying overnight as it really does seem to be perfect. Unfortunately for me, it’s the evening ferry back to England. The journey back is surprisingly quick; thanks to a super fast toll road that leads me directly to the ferry terminal. Within no time at all, I am back in the P&O club lounge, complimentary glass of champagne in hand and already seeing the lights of Dover GGM appear on the horizon.

LAZIO REGION The central region of Lazio, bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea and with Rome as its main city, has been the beating heart of Italy since the days of the Roman Empire. You just cannot visit this area without spending some time exploring the capital. Rome is a historical treasure and a tactile link to an important era of the growth of civilization. Outside of the capital you will find beautiful countryside, forested Apennine Mountains, nature reserves, lakes and rustic stone-built villages. With a favorable climate, the region gives golfers the opportunity to play throughout the year. It’s very easy to overlook everything else that the region has to offer when Rome is such an amazing city, but not to explore the area as a whole would be to miss out on so much. So, after you have visited the Vatican, the Colosseum and St Peter’s Basilica amongst other things, perhaps take a trip to the historic hill town of Tivoli, popular with wealthy Romans, where you can visit Hadrian’s Villa or Villa d’Este. The old town of Frascati, only a short trip from the capital is also worth a visit. GOLF A solid stable of two 27-hole clubs, nine18-hole, one golf academy and five 9-hole venues, provide enough options for either the diehard golfer to the casual holidaymaker who just wants to play a few rounds in-between everything else. That iconic phrase “when in Rome” can be used as an excuse (as if one was needed) to go and play the plethora of courses within easy reach of the city and beyond.

CIRCOLO DEL GOLF DI ROMA ACQUASANTA is located just outside the capital and reportedly the oldest golf club in the country, dating back to the early 1900’s. Many of its first members were British and American diplomats keen to keep their hand in while serving an overseas posting. MARCO SIMONE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB to the north east, will
be the official venue for the 2022 Ryder Cup, so don’t miss an opportunity to play here before the event. GOLF NAZIONALE, directly north of Rome is a fantastic 27-hole
development, and is considered by many to be one of the toughest and most challenging in Italy. The course follows the natural contours of the hilly terrain with many holes having breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside. OLGIATA GOLF CLUB, just north of the capital, has 27 holes set
over beautiful parkland. The venue has hosted many competitions, both Ian Poulter and Tony Jacklin having won the Italian Open Championship here. The club has also twice hosted the World Cup. GOLF CLUB PARCO DE’MEDICI has three 9-hole courses, the Red Course, Blue Course and the White Course, giving the player a choice of 27 holes. Located on the west side of Rome, it is easily accessible when staying in the city. For more information visit:www.visitlazio.com

Puglia REGION Puglia, also known as Apulia, is the southern region that reaches down to the heel of Italy. This is an area of picturesque villages and mile upon mile of stunning coastline. The most prosperous period for the region was the during the time when Greek settlers arrived and established cities in southern Italy. Puglia and the south in general were poorer than the north, primarily feudal farming regions. This trait can still be felt today and the region still reflects its relatively humble agricultural past. Most distinctive for this area are the towns of Bari and Lecce, known as “Florence of the South”, and the famous conical roofed Trulli houses. Puglia is a special place for golf enthusiasts, the landscape creates some enchanting courses that just must be played. With a mild climate, golf can be played here all year round. GOLF With a mild climate, it’s possible to enjoy a round here at any time of year. You will never feel crowded and rushed, meaning that you can enjoy a game at your own pace. This is after all southern Italy, and all things should be savoured at a leisurely pace. There are five notable courses, each with their own unique style and feel. BARIALTO GOLF CLUB is located a little south of Bari and nestles
amongst century old olive, pine and eucalyptus trees. The course was designed by American William W. Amick and Italian Giorgio Ferraris. This is a course that will challenge your choices and decisions, so select your clubs with care!
METAPONTO GOLF CLUB is the place where you really get a taste for this region of Italy. An old farmhouse has been refurbished into a Club House to create a real feeling of authenticity. The course is a delight to play and the surroundings are superb. RIVA DEI TESSALI GOLF CLUB, which is on the coast near
Taranto, has in the past hosted European Challenge Tours. The fairways make their way through a dense pine forest, creating a need for well-aimed shots to avoid hunting around for your ball. SAN DOMENICO GOLF Rated amongst the best in Italy, is an 18hole championship course next to the Adriatic Sea and north of the town of Brindisi on the Italian Peninsula. Home to the PGA European Challenge Tour Grand Final, the course is spread over 6300 metres of lush grounds with sea views from every vantage point. It was designed by European Golf Design, who have created many notable courses such as Celtic Manor, Portmarnock, and PGA Catalunya. THE DOUBLE TREE BY HILTON ACAYA GOLF RESORT, close to
Lecce is set in the midst of ancient olive trees and was designed by the American firm Hurdzan and Fry. This 18-hole par 71 course has a natural symmetry between the features of the land and the course. Many holes are flanked by lakes and streams with a spectacular waterfall dividing holes eleven and twelve. For more information visit: www.viaggiareinpuglia.it

Sicily REGION This largest of the Mediterranean islands, is located off the "toe" of Italy's "boot." The history of Sicily is diverse and rich to the extreme. Sites such as the Valley of the Temples, with the wellpreserved ruins of seven monumental Doric-style Greek temples, and in the Byzantine mosaics at the Cappella Palatina, a former royal chapel in the capital city Palermo are well worth a visit. On Sicily’s eastern edge is Mount Etna, Europe’s highest active volcanoes. Sicilian food is typically Mediterranean but with strong hints of Arabic and Spanish flavours. The locals notoriously have a sweet tooth and arguably make the best desserts in Italy. When it comes to drinks, Sicilians enjoy a fruity lemon liqueur called “Limoncello”, although it’s worth remembering that he island is home to more vineyards than any other Italian region and has one of Italy's most progressive wine industries. With 1500km of coastline, from the Tyrrhenian in the north to the Mediterranean in the south and the Ionian in the east, it’s possible for everyone to find the perfect beach. Hidden coves, unspoilt nature reserves, striking volcanic shores and bustling seaside resorts all go to make the Island of Sicily something special. GOLF There are seven golf clubs in Sicily, varying from 9 to 45 holes, thus giving golfers more than enough combinations to keep them happy. A warm Mediterranean climate creates perfect weather for year-round golf with warm moist winters and hot dry summers. VERDURA RESORT is owned and managed by the Rocco Forte
brand and is located on the west coast. With accommodation that

offers fantastic views out to the Mediterranean, as well as from of the several holes from the three Kyle Phillips golf courses. Other on-site amenities include a 60-metre infinity pool, six clay tennis courts, a world-class spa and four restaurants. DONNAFUGATA RESORT is on the south west coast of Sicily. The resort has two 18-hole golf courses, the Parkland designed by Gary Player and the Links designed by Franco Piras. Also on-site are a Spa & Wellness centre and an array of excellent restaurants and bars. IL PICCIOLO ETNA is located on the slopes of Mount Etna. This
18-hole course was the very first to be built on the island. Designed by Luigi Rota Caremoli who took his inspiration from the surrounding lava to fashion the courses unique holes. I MONASTERI GOLF RESORT in the east of Sicily, was once a
Benedictine monastery which then became the private residence for a noble family. The 18-hole course is lined with of citrus, palms, carob and olive trees. If it’s an urban setting that you are after, then the Villa Airoldi Golf Club, located in the centre of the city of Palermo is worth a visit. This 9-hole course is fun to play and can be added to a trip to the capital. GGM For more information visit: www.regione.sicilia.it/turismo and www.visitsicily.info

hether it be my native Midwesterner’s penchant for trees and green, or simply my adoration for getting on the road but winding away from my SoCal (southern California) desert home, heading west through the LA mess and then north along an eventually bucolic and undulating path forever frees my mind and soul. The destination: the world-class wine country of Napa Valley. It’s 6am on a Monday morn. My gal sits passenger side, looking at her tablet until the coffee wears off and she drifts back to slumber as the window beyond her soon reveals the city proper long gone, replaced by agricultural lands which roll like something from Irish myth. Within five hours we’re up in wine world, and soon to learn that pairing a Pinnacle with your Pinot, or Srixon with your Syrah, makes for an idyllic golf getaway. Up in Napa, on-course variety plays on par with the region’s famed vineyards amid a community that prides itself on epicurean delight and oenophilic obsession.

SILVERADO. Owned in part by hall of famer
Johnny Miller, the Silverado Resort and Spa welcomes with open arms, making a distinct first impression with the resort’s historic mansion headquarters which oversee the lush grounds. Longtime host to PGA Tour and Champions Tour events and current home to the Safeway Open, it’s easy to understand why the Tour has chosen Silverado to run its season-opening tournament across these placid surrounds, which mitigate play with membership and guest-only tee times. “Coming here for a weekend is going to test all aspects of your game,” says Jon Vesper, director of golf operations at Silverado Resort and Spa. “We’ve got two great golf courses that are totally separate from one another. So to come here and play for a few days, you get a great variety with our North Course, which is a more traditional layout, and our South, with a little more undulation." The test on the Robert Trent Jones Jr-designed Silverado North (which enjoyed a redesign by Miller in 2011) is where the pros play, and the course’s mature tree-lined fairways are complimented by large and low greens. More character can be found on the North’s front side, with a fine run on holes 3-5.

After the 399-yard, par-4 dogleg left third plays adjacent to the William Hill Winery, the tophandicapped, 378-yard No. 4 brings an excellent backdrop to couple with skillful tee demands. A double-dogleg par-5 fifth ensues, before the diminutive 344-yard No.8 beautifully highlights the opening nine. The Silverado South, also drawn by Jones Jr, is bursting with engagement and studied ball placement from the tee across a host of short par-4s. The 355-yard fifth taunts the bomber from the box with minimum length matched with maximum bunker protection to an elevated green. The clubdown mentality follows to the 380-yard No. 6, which plays downhill to a deep fairway creek before an uphill approach toward a well-guarded green. Keeping distance in play, the 426-yard, par-4 eighth counters with tee demands along the right side, lest the player succumb to a fairway cambering hard to the left. Of equal enjoyment to the diversity offered at Silverado’s sister is the easy and awesome adjacency from one’s bed to the tee box. No shuttles, cabs, car or carts required, as we simply strolled from the accommodation directly to the starter. And not to be missed is the legendary Burger Dog; found at food shacks upon both courses, the only other place in the world to enjoy the fullydressed treat masked in a hot dog-style shape is the legendary Olympic Club in San Francisco. IDYLLIC MEADOWOOD. For our next Stay & Play, we headed over to Meadowood in nearby St Helena, a mere 15 miles north of Napa, and found instant splendor amid the resort’s mesh of rusticism and sophistication. Idyllically nestled into a cabin-like setting, the grounds offer privacy, romance and a Michelin 3-star dining experience. Oh, and the 9-hole walking course at Meadowood? It’s a little gem. Enjoying a total renovation in the spring of 2015, the 1,505 yards of par-28 play are immaculately groomed and present a tree-lined test of iron accuracy. “20 years ago, most every guy came through our door wanting to play a 7,000-yard championship course,” says Doug Pike, Meadowood’s director of golf. “But today – and especially here in the Napa Valley – there’s so much to do, and over time we’ve started seeing the value of just playing nine holes.” Excellent for juniors, couples and families, the course isn’t to be overlooked by the serious player. “You can get around this course in an hour or so, and then go do any variety of things with the rest of
69

Johnny Miller
the day,” adds Pike. “But this course is a good test of your game and few really good players will shoot par.” As for club selection: Don't waffle. Just bring the whole bag, as the 254-yard par-4 sixth will have you slapping the flap cap for having left some power back in the boot. UNIQUE SETTINGS. When getting back to 18-hole play, our
traverse over to Chardonnay Golf Club & Vineyards welcomed an alternate terrain, and one that I’ll count among the most unique golf settings I’ve ever seen. “We’re out in the agricultural lands, laid-out across 150 total acres, about 45 per cent of which are planted vineyards,” details Roger Billings, general manager at Chardonnay Golf Club. “There are literally vineyards on every hole, so we’re very unique in that regard; it’s truly a wine country golf experience. The grapes and vineyards are integral across the design and layout of the course.” Lined with (surprise) Chardonnay, there’s also some Merlot and Pinot Noir vines, the gorgeous setting isn't without teeth. Wind can prove a factor across these nearly 7,000 yards of play, and the pairing of beauty and brawn doesn't afford for too much subdue. Take the monster, 463-yard par-4 sixth: a burly dogleg right with a routing so comely, I almost didn’t even care what I tallied. Two holes later, the nearly comical, 198-yard No. 8 presents a massive descent to a near-crazed putting surface. “The green literally has six tiers,” smiles Billings. “It’s in the shape of the banana and there are dogleg putts.” (Writer’s note on the 8th: I went 9-iron to the green, 60-degree off the putting surface across three tiers, 60 from the fringe and rolled in a six-foot bogey.) MERITAGE RESORT. Our final stay was at the impressive Meritage Resort & Spa, a sprawling, amenity-laden lodging replete with spa and prime dining, along with ample event and wedding space. Just two miles away from Chardonnay GC, Meritage makes for a prime perch to get to-and-fro from the course, and the resort offers golf guests the service of arranging tee times up to 60 days in advance, along with transportation, club rental and lunch. DOWNTOWN NAPA. Simply referring to Napa Valley’s post-round
exploration as a “19th hole” would be a disservice to an internationally-renowned world of wine and dine, which finds purveyors impassioned about what they serve upon one’s plate and, of course, within the glass. In downtown Napa, options for after-golf dinner and drink abound. We enjoyed starting the early evening with a walk-in stop at the handsome John Anthony Vineyard tasting room, where a glass of the velvety, 2011 Oak Knoll District Syrah makes for a 70

smooth start to the imbibing. From there, segue to the exceptional 2010 Cabernet Reserve, which presents the full character of NorCal’s bold flavor. Move on to dinner with a choice meal at TORC. It had an impressive and relaxed atmosphere with a farm-to-table vibe, offering an energised menu that places modern, creative emphasis on classic dishes. The carnivorous will be well sated, while lighter fare such as the Quinault River Steelhead, or risotto prepared with Sonoma coast black trumpet mushrooms, both prove delicious. Down the street, find a night to take in ZuZu, where the tapas menu may find your eyes darting about at first, before realising the fun in building the appetite from a Saved ArtichokePortobello salad across four or five more small plates toward a Colorado Lamb Chop finish. “Would you like added marrow with your cheeseburger?” the server inquired to our leather-bound booth at Goose & Gander in St Helena. Yeah, never been asked that before, and I’m glad I just nodded accordingly, as the wet-towel requirements of the marrow sauce combine with gruyere and bacon to provide one of the most singular taste experiences (burger or otherwise) I’ve ever had. And be sure to match that flavor with a signature cocktail, accented by the hand-crafted expense of crystalline, block ice cubes carved by chainsaws. Yes, really. COOKING SCHOOL. And though it may sound curious to make
your own meal while on holiday, for those staying a week or more, we learned that a very cool way to break-up the dine-out itinerary was to take in an evening at the Silverado Cooking School. Highly professional and fun, a bounty of classes are available, and a ‘Couple’s Dinner’ will make for a highly-entertaining experience of prepping your own fine-dining, using locally-sourced products paired with wine, and finished with recipes to take back to your own home kitchen. You must take at least one day away from the golf course to explore wine country. For newcomers, navigating the 400-plus wineries rolling through these pastoral lands can provided as much intimidation as beauty. Scoop up the free Preiser Key guide for detailed maps and contact information as a host of these wineries are private or require reservations for tasting and tours. You may not consider yourself the sort to pull off the side of the road to take pictures, but that’ll change once you drive along Highway 29 from Napa up to Calistoga, which proves an endlessly photogenic ride. Along the route, reserving stops at Nickel & Nickel, Alpha Omega and Hall are all advisable, and I recommend a culmination of the experience with a date at famed Far Niente. It has a setting so stately and beautiful that you may well be motivated to instantly propose to your favorite playing partner. rizona conjures up images of the Wild West; gunslingers, showdowns at High Noon and Native Americans. But this stereotype of America’s West belies the fact that in reality Arizona is home to some of the top spas and resorts in the States. If you’re planning a road trip and feel the need for some pampering, here’s a selection of the best of the best. TUCSON. Miraval is consistently ranked as a top destination spa
in the world thanks to its innovative programming and genuine spirit, but it wasn’t until this May with the unveiling of the Life in Balance Spa with Clarins, that Miraval actually had a spa worthy of the resort. The new 16,000 square-foot spa embodies Miraval’s philosophy of life enhancing minimalism. “Balance is what this spa is all about,” said Miraval Chairman Philippe Bourguignon. “It is the opposite of affluence and opulence.” That said the spa is luxurious in an unpretentious way. The design, done in neutral beige and grey tones layered with texture, 80

warm woods and clean-lined furnishings, is simple and sophisticated and helps guests relax and unwind. The facility features 23 treatment rooms, including six outdoor, a relaxation room that overlooks the stunning desert mountain landscape, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs and a private outdoor patio off the women’s locker room. THE NAGA TREATMENT. The spa, three-years in the making, is a collaboration between Miraval and Clarins, the top selling European skin care line. Working in tandem, over 40 exclusive new treatments were created including the Anti-Aging facial, Detoxifying Botanical Body Wrap and the Deep River Stone massage. One of the unique treatments I had a chance to experience was the Naga, a Thai massage that incorporates silk scarves that hang from the ceiling. The silks are used by the therapist for entwining and gracefully suspending themselves as well as wrapping and supporting your body. My therapist Melanie, who trained extensively in Thailand,

was extremely knowledgeable about physiology and anatomy and explained to me why my left hamstring is tight and resistant to stretching, and what is causing some of my chronic aches and pains. It turns out it all stems from a structural issue with my left hip and a weak left glute that isn’t doing its fair share of the work. Armed with this new knowledge, I have a new goal at the gym (Operation Butt Build!). GOLF. For the golfer Miraval tees up several experiences. Choose a private golf lesson with Glen Griffith, a PGA of America member since 1993 and learn his unique mind/body approach to the game. At the nearby Golf Club at Vistoso, a Tom Weiskopf designed course voted Tucson’s top public course, you’ll learn a new approach to the game emphasizing balance, awareness and connecting breath and focus with your target. Miraval also offers an on-course coaching session that applies this technique in match play. I had the opportunity to stay in one of the Catalina Suites, the suite’s décor was soothing and so peaceful. As I sat outside on
my private patio reading and writing my notes I realized it was the first time in a long time that I could hear myself think. There is something magical about Miraval. I don’t know if it’s the positive energy that is so palpable you can feel it; if it’s the secluded site in the mountains or what, but I do know that I feel relaxed and recharged every time I come here. If you want to extend your stay in Tucson and check out other golf courses look no further than the Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain, featuring a Jack Nicklaus designed course, or the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort showcasing two Tom Fazio designed 18-hole courses. SCOTTSDALE LUXURY. If Arizona is known for spas, then
Scottsdale is the pinnacle of pampering. The city boasts a concentration of four- and five-star spas that is hard to rival in the States, and the Phoenician’s Centre for Well Being is one of the top facilities in town. Not only does the five-star resort have a world-class spa, it will also keep the golfer in your group satisfied with a 27-hole course 81

comprised of three unique nines that offer several 18-hole combinations. In addition to the courses, the resort features a fullservice driving range, chipping green and putting green. The Phoenician Golf Academy offers full-day classes suitable for beginners to scratch golfers. The 22,000 square-foot spa offers 24 treatment rooms, a fitness studio, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. One of my favorite features is the Meditation Atrium, a calm oasis with leather chaise longues that I relax in while reading a magazine and listening to the trickling fountain in the sun-kissed room.
Massage. This divine 80-minute treatment uses your choice of up to three different massage options to create the most personalised massage experience you could have. As someone who, despite frequent spa visits, has a neck and shoulders with knots the size of the desert boulders you will see around town, I left it up to my therapist Gene to pick the best techniques to use. To try and break up tight muscles he used a combination of neuromuscular and sports massage. At times it felt blissful, at times it was intense, but he got results.
LOCAL DESERT PLANTS. The menu of services is broad, with many body treatments like the Desert Serenity Scrub and Prickly Pear Scrub, created from local desert plants and minerals like aloe vera, jojoba and chamomile. The spa also pays homage to Native American culture with the Well-Being Stone Ritual, a hot stone massage using the Native American custom of harnessing the power of warm basalt river stones and cool marble stones to soothe the body. I opted to try two signature services starting with the Holistic
POPULAR WITH CELEBRITIES. The Intraceutical Infusion Facial was by far one of the most unique I’ve ever experienced. The feature of the treatment is the use of hyperbaric oxygen coupled with an anti-oxidant, Hyaluronic Acid and peptide cocktail. Hyperbolic oxygen is used to treat wounds and for desert sunkissed skin it can soothe in one treatment. After cleansing my face, my therapist Luanne uses a wand, similar to that for air-brushing, aiming the concentrated oxygen on my face. It feels like a cool

wind. When coupled with the anti-oxidants it’s like my face is being misted. The system is designed to drive the anti-oxidants deep into the skin. The results are a minimisation of fine lines and increased plumpness and brightness. It’s not surprising that the facial is a favourite of A-listers like Jennifer Lopez, Victoria Beckham and Naomi Campbell. BOUTIQUE HOTEL. Guests of the Phoenician can book rooms in
the main hotel, or opt for The Canyon Suites, a boutique hotel within the resort. With 11 tennis courts, the Phoenician is one of the only places that serves up four different surfaces, including grass, where guests can channel their inner Andy Murray. is known for its vortexes-- convergences of spiritual energy that dot the red rock landscape. Luxury Enchantment Resort sits in the base of Boynton Canyon where several vortexes come together creating a magical escape like no other. The resort just finished a $25 million renovation with modern south-west designed casitas, and new restaurants and lounges like View 180 and Che-Ah-Chi offering views stunning enough to complement the cuisine. The resort has one of the most extensive activity programmes I’ve seen. In addition to ‘spa-ing’ or golfing at the resort’s affiliated Seven Canyons course, you can spend your day in a tennis clinic, a yoga class, learning how to create a vision board, trying Tai Chi, watching a spa cuisine cooking demo (and tasting the results!), exploring Native American culture through lectures or a medicine walk as well as hearing about the area’s vortexes. And this is just a smattering of what is available.

of the most informative I’ve ever attended; focusing on what makes old and new world wines different and featuring wines that drove the point home. I also loved the evening chakra meditation in the spa’s Crystal Grotto. I have a very hard time meditating but in this setting it worked and I felt relaxed and at peace afterwards. No stay at Enchantment would be complete without a hike on the Boynton Canyon Trail, an easy path that puts you up close and personal with the unique landscape. With all the activities, it was hard to remember I came here to relax and explore Enchantment’s Mii Amo spa. magic is revealed as the sky is covered in a blanket of bright stars. Take a stroll around the resort, or relax in View 180 with a glass of wine and drink in the spectacular view. While the Old West can still be found in Arizona, it’s clear that the stereotype of the state is just that, a stereotype. This southwestern gem with its stark desert landscape soothes the soul with luxury spas, golf and dining that will make a trip to the Grand Canyon State something that will linger in your memory for a lifetime. GGM
NATIVE AMERICAN TRADITIONS. Like other spas in Arizona, there is a strong focus on incorporating Native American traditions and using locally sourced products. I tried the Anasazi Ubtan, which was created by Mii Amo and not available anywhere else. The Ayruvedic treatment began with a massage tailored to my Dosha using local products. It was followed by a herbal paste designed to detoxify and purify the skin. After a quick shower a lotion was applied to leave me hydrated, refreshed and smelling pretty. For my second treatment I decided to take advantage of Sedona’s energy and book the Reading of the Moment, where numerology, tarot and palm reading is used to help you understand the direction of your life. Having just gone through a traumatic experience I was anxious to see what insights I could gain, and was surprised how accurate the information about my past was. I can only hope that the future will be as rosy as my guide, Kamma, indicated.

ost visitors will want to see Tokyo. One wouldn’t come all the way to Japan and miss it. This huge modern city makes a great stop-over as it will likely be your travel hub. Enjoy the iconic cityscapes, use that celebrated Shibuya Crossing, with its thousands of pedestrians, but also consider exploring away from the hoards. For something very special, head to that less-known part of Japan, Okinawa, which you will probably need to find on a map (look a long way to the east). Okinawa is famous for its long-lived population. With 34 centenarians per 100,000 people, this is more than three times the rate of mainland Japan, which already has a creditable aging track record. But Okinawa is, in fact, a vibrant and exciting island that presents tourists with culture, shopping, food and sports. It’s Japan’s undiscovered tropical playground. It has a raft of temples and traditional architecture so typical of Japan, but there is more. The name Okinawa means ‘rope in the open sea’, which refers to this long swathe of islands between Taiwan and the four main islands of Japan. It consists of around 50 inhabited isles and more than 100 uninhabited ones.

TRADING PORT. Okinawa has not always been a formal part of Japan. In the 17th century the kingdom was a tributary both of China and of Japan and a convenient portal for Japanese trade with China. When Japan officially closed its doors to all European nations except the Dutch, Nagasaki and Ry?ky? (the chain of islands of which Okinawa is one) became the only Japanese trading ports connected with the outside world. It has therefore had a more open nature and has historically had more foreign interaction. Okinawa has convenient flights from Tokyo and already has a flourishing tourist market catering to the Japanese. But it is becoming better known by foreigners who are able to have a twolocation vacation and want an exciting peek at the rich tapestry that is Japan. But what can one do and see on this unique archipelago? CULINARY DELIGHTS. Food will likely be a draw as it’s said to be one of the factors that keep Okinawans healthy. This cuisine is distinctly different from that of the mainland, having more Chinese and Taiwanese influences. Pork is big here and it seems
Okinawa ny.qxp_St Enodoc 15.12.2016 12.53 Side 4
that every bit is consumed in some fashion or other. Okinawan ingredients include some unique vegetables, such as bitter melon and purple yam. Dark and rich cane sugar is ubiquitous and is eaten as a sweet candy. Look out for any laced with ginger as that is outstanding and thoroughly addictive. There are many izakaya (small Japanese pubs) that have Okinawan menus and introduce the visitor to a truly local experience. Look out for goya champuru (bitter melon stirfry) and tonkatsu (breaded fried pork steak). Okinawan soba noodles are everywhere and are a filling and economic meal. A must-try national dish is rafute – that celebrated pork is braised; in this case it’s pork belly with a silky texture, melting fat and mahogany skin. Rafute was originally one of the dishes of the royal court. A block of meat is cooked for hours in bonito stock, seasoned with soy sauce and sake or the local awamori spirit. The end result is refined, mild and mouth-wateringly delicious. As an aperitif, try the local Awamori. It’s a strong rice-based spirit that can contain a staggering 60 per cent alcohol. It is made using imported fragrant Thai jasmine rice, as during the period of the Ryukyu Kingdom Japanese short-grain rice could not be
imported from the mainland. Unlike the better-known Japanese sake, awamori keeps well and can be stored for several years before drinking. Bottles of this memorable beverage can be found in shops and markets everywhere on the island. If you want to see how awamori is made, visit Kamimura Shuzo. It’s an old distillery that was established in 1882, and tours of the brewery are available, both daytime and evening. It’s a great place to buy a few extra bottles. GET SHOPPING. Okinawan music is popular in mainland Japan
and the three-stringed sanshin is a beautiful local instrument, which could be a striking souvenir for any music lover. Kokusai-d?ri (‘International Road’) is Naha city's main street and here it is possible to find all manner of gifts, including traditional and contemporary sanshin. You’ll enjoy exploring a wide variety of shops, restaurants and bars along this 1.6 kilometre-long street. Yes, there is the inevitable McDonalds but the majority of the stores and restaurants are local or Japanese. The covered Heiwa-d?ri shopping arcade and Makishi public market are the older and more colourful faces of Okinawan retail. 89
Okinawa ny.qxp_St Enodoc 15.12.2016 12.54 Side 5
There are souvenirs aplenty but also household goods, fabrics and toys. There are small family-run outlets that specialise in drink including awamori, snacks, tea and clothing. The food market is vibrant and bustling with people buying ingredients for dinner – glistening fish, still-live crabs, octopus, as well as condiments, local pickles, meat and vegetables. This will be the highlight of a visit for anyone looking for an authentic food experience. Just outside the market is the area called Tsuboya or ‘pot jar shop’. This neighbourhood was once a major centre of ceramic production on the island and is still a magnet for those hunting for Japanese tableware or ceramics of any description. A whole dinner service might be too weighty to take back home but a set of chopstick rests would be light and affordable. EXPLORING THE AREA. Most people will know of Okinawa from wartime documentaries. Historical World War II sites can be found throughout the islands, especially the main island of Okinawa, commemorating the huge loss of life and conflict in the region. There is the Peace Memorial Park in Naha, the navy's former underground headquarters, and the Himeyuri Monument. Okinawa has great snorkelling and diving from the smaller islands, as well as some of the best offshore fishing in the world. The sea is clear, blue and warm and will tempt keen underwater photographers. Marlin and tuna are popular catches and there are many boats with crew for hire, but find one that caters to nonJapanese-speakers. If you’re not up for snorkelling but still want to observe the sealife, head to Churaumi Aquarium, which is found in Ocean 90

Expo Park on the Motobu Peninsula. Attractions include one of the world’s largest observation tanks with huge whale sharks and manta rays, as well as coral with its smaller inhabitants. Another fun place to visit is Murasaki Mura, an entertainment park where you can experience dozens of different types of Okinawan culture. Well worth a visit for an overview of this unique island. One thing is for sure; you won’t forget this amazing land in a hurry. GGM
GOOD TO KNOW GETTING AROUND Public buses run all over Okinawa. Times and routes are posted in both English and Japanese at each bus stop and bus terminals. The best way to see the island is by private tour bus. Tours begin at around 8am and can be arranged by going to the Naha Bus Station at the Asahabashi monorail stop. WHEN TO GO Even in January and February, the average high temperature is around 20°C (68°F), ideal for a winter trip. Late March and April is a good time to visit for a spring holiday although it’s best to avoid the end of April which is a peak holiday time for Japanese. Summer months in Okinawa, just like most of Japan, can be hot and humid, and September might find the visitor confronted by typhoons. October and November are again good times to visit. nless you are a fanatical golfer and never go on holiday with your family or friends, you will be looking to add some variety to your leisure time. An adventure in the mountains of Cyprus on the trail of good wine may be the perfect choice. To guide me around some of Cyprus’ best wineries, I meet up with Maro from Cyprus Tourism at Minthis Hills Golf Club on a typically beautiful Cypriot day. Unfortunately, we have no time on this occasion to play golf, although it is tempting. Minthis Hills is the perfect meeting point as it’s on the way to some fantastic wineries that we are visiting. In fact, the golf club grows its own grapes on the course and will be harvesting them soon to make their own branded wine. The grapes here are Mavro, an ancient variety suitable to the hot Cypriot climate. At present, there is no news as to how many bottles will be produced, but having been out there and eaten the grapes on several occasions, I can vouch for their good taste. EXPERIENCED WINE MAKERS. Cyprus has been producing wine for thousands of years; archaeological finds have proven that there was a booming trade as early as 2300 BC. In fact, Cyprus lays claim to having the world’s oldest-named wine, which is still in production – Commandaria, which was proclaimed by Richard the Lionheart as the “wine of the kings and the king of the wines”. This same wine reputedly also won the first recorded tasting competition that was staged by king Philip Augustus of France in the 13th century. The unique thing for many Cypriot wines is the use of varieties of grape that are only found on this island. Names such as Maratheftiko, Xynisteri, Spourtiko or Mavro will not appear on bottles from any other country. The angle here is play golf and visit wineries, so we are going to stick to the ones that are located within the golf region of Paphos. Here the magnificent Troodos Mountains form the backdrop to the many fine vineyards. In the mountains, the air is

cooler and there is more precipitation, which is good for the grapes. There are seven well-established wine routes, which I strongly recommend using, but today we are planning on going ‘off-piste’ (careful how you pronounce that!). EZOUZA WINERY. Our first stop is Ezouza Winery, an unassuming
building in the village of Kannaviou. As with all the wineries in this region, the grapes are harvested only from the surrounding area. The owner Michalis has a creative mind and is really trying to push some boundaries with their latest presentations, all of which are exceptional. The Ezousa Xinisteri is a good example – it’s a white wine with pleasant aromas and a rich, fruity taste. For lovers of red, the Ezousa Maratheftiko is marvellous, with a vibrant ruby colour and aromas of black cherry, mint and thyme. As the designated driver, I am in the unfortunate position of being more of a professional wine sampler, which involves spitting out the wine (such a waste!). I’m not quite sure how I managed to fall for this, but Maro seems decidedly happy with her lot. Luckily, Michalis lets us choose a bottle to take away, purely for research purposes, of course. Several kilometres further on and we arrive at Vouni Panayia. Now this is one winery that I have visited before. Last time I left happily clutching some amazing wines, which to my wife’s annoyance, never quite made it home for some reason. Onsite there is a restaurant and they are well geared up for showing visitors around their establishment. As well as wines, they also produce other traditional Cypriot grape products, such as, Epsima, Soutzioukos and Palouzes (traditional sweet treats), along with homemade jams. My favourite Vouni wine is the Barba Yiannis 2013 vintage, a full-bodied red wine with a bouquet consisting of cherries, black chocolate and vanilla. If it’s white wine that takes your fancy, then a bottle of Spourtiko 2015 is well worth a try. The Spourtiko grape is rare and only a few producers make wine from it, the
Wine NF.qxp_Layout 1 02.01.2017 14.25 Side 4
grapes being so delicate that they burst very easily. Apparently, spourtiko means ‘bursting’ in Greek. KOLIOS WINERY. On we go, further into the mountains, through the pretty village of Statos Ayios Photios and past the famous Chrysoroyiatissa Monastery, which also makes some good wine. When even the monasteries are producing, you really do know that wine is an important part of a culture. At 3,000 feet, we reach our third stop, Kolios Winery. Production is well under way when we arrive and local growers are bringing in their grapes for pressing. The owner Marios Kolios, fourth of his generation to produce wine, is busy directing proceedings. We leave him to it and make our way to the onsite visitor centre and restaurant, where the views over the surrounding mountains are amazing. This is the perfect place to try some of the produce and maybe have a little lunch. Again, there are some wonderful wines produced from the traditional grapes. Saint Fotios is an excellent red dry wine made from Maratheftico and Mavro grapes. Persefoni is an outstanding white wine, which again uses the Xynisteri. You have a choice of dry or medium dry, both with a very a fine and subtle aroma. MAKKOS WINERY. Each winery has given us bottle to take away. By now the car is filling up and I am starting to wonder just how I am going to get all of them home. God forbid that I have to leave any behind! No, I will find a way. Makkas Winery is our final stop for the day, which is probably for the best as the car is starting to feel decidedly heavier. The sun is beginning to set and it will soon be time to get back. Makkas is undergoing a transformation, it has expanded so much that they are in the process of building new premises. It really is a testament to the resurgence of the Cypriot wine business and the interest in the native grape varieties. This place is also a hive of activity, we have obviously timed our tour with the height of the harvest and it looks like work will be continuing well into the night. George Gkenos, the manager, sits us down after providing a short tour and starts opening some bottles. I am instantly attracted to the Makkas White Xynisteri, this variety has grown on me more and more at every stop. Makkas has blended in a small amount of Chardonnay and aged it in French oak barrels, and the combination creates a lovely fresh and fruity taste. The Makkas Rose is produced from a blend of Lefkada and Maratheftiko grapes to create intense and rich flavours. Gkenos’ approach is adventurous, combining the best of Cyprus with the best from elsewhere. All in all, I have eight bottles of wine safely packed for my return to the UK. Maybe this will in some way atone for my lack of gifts for my wife from my previous foray. This trip has been thoroughly enjoyable and has highlighted another great reason to visit the island of Cyprus. Come here to play golf, but just make sure that you leave time to visit the wine routes, you may just find that it becomes a natural part of your golf holiday.
