This shot required a bit of waiting on a mostly overcast day on the Monterey Peninsula. There was a slight break in the clouds just above the horizon to the west and I thought there was the possibility that I might get some sun just prior to it dipping below the horizon. Although my waiting was rewarded, the light only lasted about thirty seconds which was just enough time to get off a few frames. I wasn’t the only one happy with the shot - the USGA liked it so much that they chose to put it on the cover of the US Open magazine.

WELCOME TO the 100 Greatest Golf Resorts 2017. The 100 Greatest is made up of five subcategories, each consisting of 20 Golf Resorts that are considered candidates for a particular field. The fields voted for by our readers over 2016 are; • Top 20 Romantic, • Top 20 Exotic, • Top 20 Family Friendly • Top 20 Golf & Spa • Top 20 Gourmet. So, why have we decided to bring out the 100 Greatest? There are other “Top 100” lists after all. But you see, the thing is, they all concentrate only on the golf courses, and however important that is, it’s only part of a perfect holiday. To be a contender, a resort must have many attributes, such as excellent service, comfort, quality and facilities among others.
To be included in the 100 Greatest Golf Resorts, one of our roving journalists must have visited the location at least once. This is the Great Golf “100 Greatest”, after all, and we can only be truthful if we have first-hand experience. You will notice that some contenders do not have a golf course. Rovos Rail in South Africa, for example, is a Golf Safari train experience. It’s only important that the candidate is a self-contained high standard holiday location and golf is readily accessible. The purpose is for our readers to pick which ones provide the best holiday for the travelling golfer, and that includes so much more than just golf. The votes are in and it’s time to list our winners. Readers who have voted in all 5 categories have been added to the “Win a Golfing Holiday” competition.

TOP 20 ROMANTIC GOLF RESORTS The first Top 20 group, and a very important one at that. After all, isn’t a holiday supposed to be a time to relax with the important person in your life? What exactly is it that would qualify a resort to be included in such an important list? This particular group of stunning locations came out just after Valentine’s Day 2016, but surely to qualify there must be a more permanent romantic lure throughout the year, not just for one day. Our team of journalists decided on a combination of location, design, service and atmosphere, all important factors needed for a resort to be included. The following selection includes locations from far and wide, from Scotland to South Africa. And all with one overriding quality, the sense of romanticism. And the winner of the Top 20 Romantic Golf Resorts is on the final pages of this section.

FRANCE - CHATEAU D’ AUGERVILLE Located in Augerville-la-Riviére, about an hours’ drive south of Paris, Chateau d’Augerville offers peace and tranquillity, fine dining, luxury accommodation and an 18 hole parkland golf course. It also has its very own artisan chocolate factory and patisserie, where you can learn how to make chocolate by a master. ACCOMMODATION – Traditional Chateau style rooms, all finished to a high standard and ranging from a singe up to the Grand Suite. GOLF – 18 holes over a rolling landscape, framed by woodland. The Chateau makes the perfect backdrop when playing the 9th and the 18th hole. SPA – Complete Spa and Wellness area over two floors. FOOD – High quality traditional French cuisine. CHOCOLATE - The Chateau’s artisan chocolatier Hervé Boudot will happily share some of his skills with you.
SOUTH AFRICA - ROVOS RAIL Named after the visionary who founded it 30 years ago and who still greets passengers at its terminus in South Africa’s capital Pretoria, Rovos Rail is a cut above the rest. The company styles itself as the world’s most luxurious train and its Bentley-green carriages are emblazoned with the slogan, Pride of Africa. ACCOMMODATION – Ranging from a standard Pullman suite up to the Royal Suites, all options are finished to a high standard and have énsuite bathrooms. GOLF - Two dedicated, nine-day golf rail journeys that also cater for non-players. FOOD - Meals are announced by a gong and diners get to sample traditional South African dishes.
ENGLAND - BOVEY CASTLE Deep in the hills of Dartmoor National Park lies Bovey Castle, a remarkable hotel where you are treated like royalty in a most welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. Here you can put your feet up and let the kids run wild, or test your metal on the superb golf course. ACCOMMODATION – Whether you want a single room, a Grand State Apartment, or a self-catering lodge, everything has been tastefully furnished to compliment the castle and its surroundings. GOLF – This course has been described as a golf experience never to be forgotten, offering plenty of challenges to professionals and amateurs alike. SPA - The Elan Spa offers bespoke spa experiences using ESPA products that have been created to relax, revive and restore the body and spirit. FOOD – With two restaurant offering traditional dining, or a brasserie, there is something here for everyone
MOROCCO - BEACHCOMBER ROYAL PALM MARRAKECH Royal Palm Marrakech features 134 exquisite suites and villas at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, only a few kilometres from the Red City. Manicured gardens dotted with ancient olive trees and, of course, a superb golf course, make this an excellent romantic location. ACCOMMODATION – Whether you chose a Junior Suite, a Presidential Suite, or a Villa, everything is of the highest standard. GOLF - One of the most spectacular golf courses in Marrakech, Royal Palm Golf Club offers a unique combination of luxury and sustainable development. SPA – Royal Palm Spa, designed to resemble a Moroccan palace, uses Clarins as a partner. ACCOMMODATION – With a combination of rooms, suites and Villas, there is something for everyone and all have views either out to the Mediterranean, or to the countryside. GOLF – The stunning Minthis Hills Golf Course, set in the Troodos Mountains, is about 20 minutes away, while the remaining 3 course are located around Paphos. SPA – Thalassotherapy draws on the restorative benefits of the maritime climate, seawater, and marine derivatives. FOOD - There’s a choice of four restaurants, including the romantic candlelit cavern, Basiliko, which serves gourmet Asian cuisine with a hint of Mediterranean flavours.
GRAN CANARIA - SHERATON SALOBRE GOLF RESORT & SPA Positioned in the hills, with views out to sea, this modern hotel simply seems to grow out of the rock. Here visitors can look forward to a totally relaxing experience in an environment of elegance and luxury. ACCOMMODATION – All rooms are of a high standard, ranging from Deluxe all the way up to the Presidential Suite, which features a private roof top terrace. GOLF – With two fantastic courses within the development and a further five only a short drive away, this is a perfect location for golf enthusiasts. SPA - The Aloe Wellness spa offers a variety of facial and body therapies rounding off with a Wellness Circuit. FOOD – With a choice of six restaurants, there are a wealth of options available. Bar Sunset, which is located on the 11th floor, is the perfect place to watch the sun go down while enjoying a cocktail.
MALLORCA - MONNABER NOU HOTEL If you are looking for a rural idyll in the sun, then Monnaber Nou Eco Boutique Hotel in Mallorca, is perfect. A restored manor house, set in over 370 acres of unspoilt countryside and with several golf courses within easy reach, this is a must for a romantic golf escape. ACCOMMODATION – From a standard room to a suite apartment, all rooms have an authentic Mallorca feel to them with views out over the rolling countryside. GOLF – With 24 courses to hand, Mallorca has every right to call itself the “Golf Island” and just a short drive north of the hotel, lies Alcanada a stunning course that shouldn’t be missed. SPA - Monnaber Nou’s Health and Fitness Spa contains and indoor and outdoor spa, baths, steam room, two saunas, a swimming pool and fitness room. FOOD - The hotel’s restaurant, offers guests panoramic views from its terraces. The best of Majorcan and Mediterranean cuisine is prepared from fresh local produce and complemented by fine wine. SOUTH TYROL - SAN LORENZO MOUNTAIN LODGE San Lorenzo, with its panoramic views over the Pusteria Valley, is a sixteenth century, hunting lodge, which the owners, Stefano and Giorgia, have painstakingly restored. Giorgia, who is an accomplished and passionate chef, not only prepares all the food, but also offers visitors the opportunity to learn some of her wonderful recipes. ACCOMMODATION – The lodge has four romantic bedrooms, each unique and designed with attention to every detail. Some have valley views, while others face the woods. GOLF – The lodge has its very own unique golf course, endorsed by Jack Nicklaus, consisting of one green and six tees, each with three positions. You can also play at Pustertal Golf Club and Golf Club St Vigil Seis down in the valley. SPA – The lodge has an outdoor whirlpool where you can relax with a glass of champagne. There is also a Finnish sauna and a Turkish bath, with massages also being available. FOOD - At San Lorenzo Mountain Lodge, guests have the option of enjoying Giorgia’s delicious local specialities or being served by a prestigious chef. OTHER ACTIVITIES – Apart from the obvious Alpine and cross country skiing option, there is paragliding, mountain biking and rafting to name just a few.
MALAYSIA - SHANGRI-LA'S RASA RIA RESORT & SPA, KOTA KINABALU The Rasa Ria Resort is located on Pantai Dalit Beach and perched on a verdant hill, surrounded by 400 acres of tropical forest. With spectacular views to what our journalist described as miles of untouched sand, it is the perfect romantic retreat. COSTA RICA – VILLA MANZU Within the lush grounds of the Peninsula Papagayo in Costa Rica, Villa Manzu is a completely private sanctuary. Great Golf Journalist Peter Ellegard visited Mission Hills Haikou, located on China’s tropical island of Hainan in its southernmost province. Often called China’s Hawaii, it is now the focal point for its burgeoning golf tourism industry. Of Hainan’s 50-plus golf courses, 10 of them (almost one-fifth) are at Mission Hills Haikou, which spans a vast volcanic lava landscape. Likewise, watch manufacturers usually assemble parts procured from an array of firms, including ETA and Nivarox. However, there are a few practitioners of haute horlogerie which make virtually every component in-house. Parmigiani Fleurier is a manufacturer of high-end mechanical wristwatches and clocks. It makes all components in-house, save for sapphire crystals (watch glass), rubies and Hermès watch straps. There are very few other watch brands that can compete with Parmigiani Fleurier in the ‘vertically integrated’ stakes. The company has five production sites making dials, cases, screws, pinions, levers, springs and a myriad of other parts to create a complete timepiece. As the name implies, Parmigiani Fleurier is located in Fleurier, within the Val-de-Travers municipality in the watchmaking haven of Switzerland. It nestles in a coniferous valley and plays host to incredible watchmaking craft. HOW IT ALL BEGAN. With the arrival of quartz watches in
the 1970s there was a so-called ‘quartz crisis’, when demand for mechanical watches evaporated overnight and watchmaking virtually disappeared in the Val-de-Travers. However, in 1976 a young watchmaker called Michel Parmigiani established his own workshop in Couvet and dedicated it to watchmaking and restoration. Later, Parmigiani was introduced to the Landolt family, 74

heirs to the Sandoz pharmaceutical group. The family were in possession of an amazing collection of pocket watches and automata, the Maurice-Yves Sandoz Collection. He assumed responsibility for restoring and maintaining the family’s collection of wonderful horological artefacts. Once the family became familiar with Parmigiani’s horological prowess, he was encouraged to move from his modest workshop and establish his own watchmaking brand with the backing of the Sandoz Family Foundation. Parmigiani Fleurier was established in 1996 and has since gained an enviable reputation for its restoration work and new haute horlogerie creations. Restoration work involves researching the history of the item to be restored and learning about the materials used. The restoration process is not a matter of refurbishment, nor is it a case of the restorer imposing his own personality on the item in question, but rather it is the process of preserving the character of the piece as it would have been when originally created. Each restoration project is accompanied with a detailed dossier. The master craftsmen within the restorations department record each detail in photographic form. Text describes the nature of every restorative step, including the condition before and after restoration. Care is exercised to ensure that the original parts are preserved. In some instances, the removal of oxidisation may have left small pock marks on the surface. However, providing this distress does not impair the functionality of the item, the component may well be retained, ensuring the originality of the work of art is not lost. Historical research is another key aspect of the restoration process. Once, whilst I toured the restoration department and spent time with Michel, he pointed out a rogue wheel

found in a pocket watch. The material of the wheel, and its poor quality, were not in-keeping with the rest of the watch, indicating a clumsy repair from yesteryear. The teeth did not have the correct profile and the appearance of the wheel looked out of place. Michel proceeded to show me the picture of a newly fitted wheel and the word ‘après’ in a dossier, suddenly the raison d’être for the department immediately became obvious. Clocks and watches from the past often provide inspiration for Parmigiani Fleurier timepieces of today. For instance, a historical pocket watch created by Vardon and Stedmann, featuring telescopic hands, arrived in the restoration department in 1997. This model subsequently provided the inspiration for the incredible Parmigiani Fleurier Ovale Pantograph. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE. While Parmigiani Fleurier has
looked to the past for inspiration, it hasn’t failed to embrace the future. In 2016, keen to recognise the 20th anniversary of the maison, Parmigiani Fleurier unveiled the incredible Tonda Chronor Anniversaire. This technical tour de force features a gold movement, a large date display and two column wheels. The two column wheels operate the chronograph (stopwatch) and split second function. Pressing the push-pieces of the Chronor confers a silken action that usurps other chronographs. However, beyond impressive functionality is the movement finish which is the protracted outcome of painstaking bevelling and polishing. Screws are polished to a mirror-like gleam and the open-worked movement bridges are exquisitely chamfered to confer a beguiling brilliance. The neoteric design of the Bugatti Supersports highperformance car also provided inspiration for a new kind of watch. The conventional style was set aside for a curved timepiece, nuzzling the natural arc of the wrist with 76

ergonomic aplomb. The dial is presented on the sole vertical flank. The watch is designed to be read when holding the steering wheel and, when used in this way, the hours and minutes are lucidly conveyed. Some clocks and watches crafted by Parmigiani Fleurier surpass six figure pricing. There is little evidence of pennypinching or expedient shortcuts with a timepiece bearing the initials PF on its pin buckle. However, do not despair, the maison does have an egalitarian side to its character. Parmigiani Fleurier has recently unveiled the Tonda 1950 in steel. Previously, the Tonda 1950, a wristwatch with a case diameter of 39mm, was offered only in noble metals such as 18-carat white gold and 18-carat rose gold. However, Parmigiani Fleurier now offers this elegant watch in steel, with a recommended asking price of £7,950 – this is not an inconsequential sum but given the elevated watchmaking it represents, it could be considered a horological bargain. The steel watch is slightly larger than its golden siblings, measuring 40mm in diameter, but it still retains a svelte profile of 8.2mm, courtesy of the ultra-thin PF702 movement. Beyond the various statistics and model references is a movement which is distilled to perfection. The movement bridges are adorned with a series of parallel stripes referred to as Côtes de Genève motif. The mainplate, effectively the chassis of the movement, is decorated with overlapping circles referred to as perlage. Despite the PF702 movement being imbued with a multitude of refinements, its slender profile allows it to fit within the ultra-thin case of the Tonda 1950, a timepiece which exudes elegance and grace with every gleaming contour of its being. Swede success Like Northern Ireland, Sweden is a country that seems to punch well above the belt when producing great golfers. Alex Noren is the latest Scandinavian golfer to make his mark on the international scene, so what’s the secret to his success? By Mike Kaas-Stock, photos Alex Norén Management

EARLY DAYS. Growing up in Haninge, a little south of
Stockholm, golf was just something that Alex and his friends did to pass the time. Not suffering from the same stuffiness that seems prevalent in the UK, the clubs in Sweden are much more laidback and welcoming to the younger generation. “The putting green was a natural kindergarden,” says Norén. “Being long and narrow it gave us enough creativity to try the craziest shots when having contests. The bet was always ice cream to the winner, and we played golf all day. Our parents had to bring food out onto the course because dinner wasn't our priority; lowering our handicap was. We kids played rounds together; sometimes we let our parents join in if there weren't enough of us. I think the opportunity to just play without being instructed by anyone gave us a complete joy and love for the game.” OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY. Norén was competing with the Swedish National Golf Team when he made the big decision to move to the US and study at Oklahoma State University. This was to get the chance to play for the University Golf Team, which is one of the best in the country. “There was a lot of pressure for all players to do well,” says Norén, “but it helped to be in that sort of regime and to learn how to cope mentally with the demands of the game.” Norén turned pro in 2005, just missing out on a European Tour 80

card but getting full exemption on the Challenge Tour for 2006. He’s had 11 top-ten moments, including a win at the Rolex Trophy in Geneva which put him at third place in the final order of merit. He had a full tour card for the European Tour 2007 and by 2009 Norén had a ranking of 25th and a win at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland. MOVING ON UP. Successes continued until 2014 when he was
forced to take time out to recover from an injury, but by 2015 he was back on track with a win at the Nordea Masters. Norén’s best year yet was 2016; winning four in 11 starts on the European Tour. In July, he won the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open to secure his fifth European Tour victory. He then went on to win the Omega European Masters, followed by his third win of the season at the British Masters at The Grove, lifting him to 18th in the official world golf ranking. Now preparing for his first US Masters, Great Golf catches up with him for the lowdown on life as Alex Norén… GGM So, with the Masters coming up soon, what are your thoughts? Norén It’s great to be competing there this year, and this upcoming competition has finally got Jennifer my girlfriend interested in golf.

GGM Have you ever played Augusta? GGM Where do you go to relax and recharge? Norén No, not yet but I am looking forward to it. Being part of the Masters is going to be an incredible experience. GGM Do you have a game plan? Norén Just to do my best and be as prepared as possible. Make sure that I am physically and emotionally ready. Being based in Florida during the winter means that I have plenty of opportunity to make sure that I am in good form. The weather here is perfect during the colder months. GGM Sweden has produced some great golfers, why do you think this is? Norén Even though we don’t have the best weather for golf, it’s a sport that is actively encouraged to the younger generation and does not suffer from the stereotypical image that it has in other countries. Kids are welcome on the golf courses, which in turn leads to enthusiasm and inclusion. Within a climate like this there will always be some who are ready pursue it with a passion. So 82

Norén We have a summer house on the Swedish island of Gotland, this is a great place to go and get away from the stresses of life. It is perfect for spending quality time with my family. We have a lot of friends there who are not connected to golf, so it’s not such a big conversation point when we are socialising. GGM And now you are a father, how does that affect your golf? Norén Yes, it’s a wonderful experience. I find that I am more relaxed after becoming a father, you realise that there are far more important things in life, which I find helps centre me when playing competitions. My daughter Iris and my girlfriend Jennifer are the stability that my life needs. This is a golfer who seems to have found his rhythm, both on and off the course. Who knows what will happen at the 2017 US Masters? But one thing is for sure; there is a very real Swedish contender in the mix this year. GGM
