imes are changing, and with it our travel habits. It used to be that a trip to somewhere warm was considered something of an adventure, but now, with so much more on offer most of us think nothing about jumping on a plane and flying to far flung destinations. Hot, cold, wet or dry, we no longer just go for sun. I hasten to add that I would not take anything away from the long standing locations, but there are a myriad of new destinations waiting to be discovered if we are willing to step out of our comfort zone. Some are half way around the world, but even more are close to home, and the choices are mounting. For example, Italy has not been one of the first destinations that people think of for a golf holiday, and why is that? The courses are fantastic, the hotels are amazing, but many places like Italy have not seen the advantage of reaching out to the golfer. This is rapidly changing, and like hibernating creatures, they are making their first forays into the light. So when you plan your next vacation, ask yourself, “Shall I try something new?” It could be a life changing experience, and you may find that the destination is so keen to impress, they will go that little bit further for your approval. Here at Great Golf it’s all about the experience, and that means the whole package, not just the golf. Food, wine, accommodation, spa and other non-golf activities, it all goes to make up that perfect holiday. But hey, it’s your choice, we are only here to help. So please, if you get a chance, let us know what you find, the good, the bad and even the downright ugly.

WHAT´S NEW

Tamuda Bay

Escape the winter blues

A

nyone who has not taken a golf holiday to Morocco is missing out on somewhere quite special. This is a country that’s on a mission to take on the likes of Spain at their own game, and new golf clubs and resorts are springing up everywhere. Here at Great Golf, we love to cover the regular locations such as Marrakech or Agadir, but are always keen to show our readers somewhere that they have possibly not come across before. Tamuda Bay, in the north of the country, is well worth the trip, especially when there is a five star Sofitel Hotel there as well.

STUNNING SCENERY. Located to the south-east of Tangier and facing out into the Mediterranean Sea, Tamuda Bay is just the perfect place to stay and relax. There are plenty of flights to Tangier from the UK, but for those intrepid travellers who maybe want to combine some time in Spain as well, you could take the ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar. You will find that you are not the first to discover this area. There has been a city here since the third century BC and various civilizations have settled here, the Berbers, Romans and Phoenicians to name but a few. Tamuda Bay is one of the newest developments in the country, and its proximity to Tangier makes it easily accessible. With a combination of great beaches, stunning surroundings and that essential Moroccan style, visitors will find plenty to do and see. The coastline here is exceptional and the drive from Tangier, with the sea on your left and the stunning Rif Mountains to your right, is magical.

GREAT GOLF MAGAZINE

Bear in mind that a flight to Tangier is under three hours, but you arrive in a different world. MODERN AND CHIC. In May 2016 the Sofitel

Tamuda Bay opened its doors. This five-star beachfront hotel has set a new standard in refinement and sophistication for the location. The architect for this project was Galal Mahmoud, who brought a mixture of traditional Moroccan and 1950s French Riviera glamour to the design. Having 82 rooms, the hotel is large enough to have all the facilities you would expect of a luxury establishment, while not being overly expansive. Each room has a balcony with views out to the Mediterranean or gardens. For guests looking for an extra level of comfort, there is a choice of the royal suite, five junior suites, three So Spa suites, five signature villas and eight beach suites, with private terrace and Jacuzzi. As with all Sofitel Hotels, the aim is to offer excellence in a calming environment. SO SPA. The hotel has a vast amount of space dedicated to its spa facilities. Decorated in warm colours, the spa has an authentic hammam, sauna, unique hydrotherapy, beauty and detox treatments, plus a lovely relaxation area. So if your neck and shoulders are aching after a long day on the course, you know where to go for a proper unwind. HIDDEN GEM. Golfing in the perfect environment, with sun, sea and mountains in abundance – what could be better? The Cabo Negro Golf Course is well worth any golfer’s time. Aesthetically pleasing and as technically challenging as you want to make it, the front nine follows the scenic coastline with

those magical views out to sea. There are some tricky holes with bunkers coming into play just to keep you on your toes. The back nine has those spectacular views of the Rif mountains and also some testing but fair holes. The location is great and you really do have the feeling of having the course almost to yourself. At present, this is a hidden gem, but it will not be long before the fairways fill up so make that trip soon.

All in all, this is the perfect destination if you’re looking to escape the dreary winter months of Britain. So start packing! GGM

OTHER THINGS TO DO. When you tire of golf, or if there are people in your party who do not play, then there are plenty of other things to do and see, such as water sports, scuba diving or trekking in the Rif Mountains. A trip into the magical city of Tangier is also a must, as is a visit to the UNESCO site of Tetouan.

GOOD TO KNOW TRAVEL Fly: The Tangier-Ibn Batouta Airport has flights from the UK and many other European cities. Boat: The ferry runs from Spain every two hours. Once you arrive in Tangier, it’s a 45-minute drive to Tamuda Bay.

You can’t call this a golf cart. Garia and MercedesBenz have cooperated and come up with the closest thing to driving an actual car from tee to green. By Kasper Ă˜rkild, photo Garia

hen Thomas Pieters received the Georg Jensen Trophy after finishing first in the European Tour, business man Lars Larsen, owner of Himmerland Golf and Spa Resort, entered the 18th green. And it says something about his choice of golf car that he caught the eye of everyone around him. Garia only produces premium-class golf cars, but the MercedesBenz Style Edition Garia Golf Car takes that term to a whole new level. The cooperation between the two companies results in a vehicle which excels in both form and function. But what makes this golf car differ from the rest of Garia’s luxurious fleet? The first thing to catch your eye is the design. Smooth carbon fibre is the primary ingredient and the entire composition just oozes luxury. The inspiration and most materials are taken directly from the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. It’s simply not possible to miss the influence of the German car manufacturer. “The people we target with this golf car have a customized 28

lifestyle. Their car is customized and their golf clubs are customized, so why shouldn’t their golf car be unique? With our real sports car, we meet this demand,” Anders Lynge, Garia CoFounder and Creative Director, explains. MANY IMPROVEMENTS. But if we take a step closer and look at more than design, the Mercedes-Benz Style Edition Garia Golf Car has improvements on more than one level. “This car mixes all of our experience and knowledge and takes it to a new level. We raised the level of design execution and the general quality with this car,” Lynge says. Let’s get technical for a minute. This car only weighs 66 stone. A regular golf car usually hits 86 stone. That means quite a lot. First of all, the green keeper must be delighted, as the car puts less pressure on the grass. And the acceleration is increased, so you’ll be delighted as well. The decreased weight is because of the lithium battery in the Mercedes-Benz Style Garia. But what does it go for? Acquiring this golf car will cost you

Garia.qxp_Layout 1 28.09.2016 11.29 Side 4

“This car mixes all of our experience and knowledge and takes it to a new level. We raised the level of design execution and the general quality with this car,” Lynge says.

£38,000. It’s in the high end of the price range, which Garia is quick to justify. According to them, they’re selling more than just a golf car or a vehicle. They are selling a concept, an idea and a brand. “It’s the name. It’s the exclusivity. It’s a limited edition. A lot of work was put into the design of this golf car. All those thoughts are reflected in the price,” Anders Lynge explains. The Mercedes-Benz Style Edition Garia Golf Car isn’t targeting your local country club, or indeed any regular golf club. It’s meant to appeal to individuals with a sense of style, exclusivity and luxury. The philosophy behind it is clearly from elite car production rather than golf cart production. So, when looking at the price sign, it would be unfair to consider it as merely the price of a golf car. Garia and Mercedes-Benz call it a “real sports car” in their description and rarely refer to it as a golf car. They’ve put work into making it drivable on roads and legal to drive in public. It’s not just a golf cart, but a multipurpose car for golfing. LAUNCH AT ROYAL TROON. The “real sports car” was launched at

The Open this year, where Garia and Mercedes-Benz tested the demand and interest. Since then, this limited-edition golf car has been seen in the United States and Denmark, where Garia showed it off. A launch at Royal Troon really is in the spirit of golf, which satisfies both Mercedes-Benz and Garia. Mercedes-Benz has been a long time sponsor in the golfing world and their brand has a tight connection to golf and golfers. Making their way into the world of golf cars only makes sense at an event like The Open. Presenting the car at Royal Troon is just as important to Garia. Co-Founder Anders Lynge is excited to show off the result of an important collaboration. “This cooperation and product really establishes our position as the ultimate producer of luxury golf cars. We’re proud of cooperating with Mercedes-Benz and producing a revolutionary golf car,” Lynge says. Garia and Mercedes-Benz are certainly aiming for a position in the world of golf cars similar to Royal Troon’s position in the world of golf courses. 29

CONTROLLED BY COMPUTER. This premium-class golf car has yet another major point of distinction. Most features are controlled by a computer and can be programmed down to the exact details you need as an owner and a driver. Actually, the whole golf car is controlled by this computer, which is navigated through an interactive display in the car. Even the fridge and its temperature can be adjusted through this tablet. In any other golf car, every switch and contact is wired individually

so this is a big step up. Add built-in WiFi and Bluetooth and you have a highly digitized golf car. You don’t see that every day. That, among other angles, features and details puts this vehicle on the absolute top of premium-class golf cars. f you’re fortunate enough to travel the world for recreation with a little golf thrown in, it can be rare for both the destination and the golf to be as equally breathtaking and of comparable high quality. There are many world-class resorts in idyllic settings but with golf courses that don’t match up to these high standards and, equally, the reverse can apply – where the reputation of the golf course alone is the primary reason for visiting. However, on my visit to The Andaman, a Luxury Collection Resort, and nearby Els Club Teluk Datai golf course in Langkawi, Malaysia, it didn’t take much past the first impressions of either to be totally convinced that this was a heady and glorious combination. I must admit, the title is somewhat misleading as this was not my first encounter with the magical islands of Langkawi, in the state of Kedah off the northwest coast of Peninsula Malaysia. These mystical islands and their wondrous juxtaposition of ancient rainforest, craggy mountain regions and jaw-dropping

I 34

coastal beaches and coves have had drawn me to them time and again over the years. UNIQUE WILDLIFE. The Andaman, though, was new to me as the entrance is tucked away from the main thoroughfare down a steep, winding driveway. The cavernous and traditional Kampung-styled lobby is luxuriously impressive in itself but we were utterly transfixed when drawn to the view from the balcony edge, down to the free-form pool built in harmony with the existing rainforest with the turquoise expanse of Datai Bay beyond. Paradise found indeed and no matter the length of your journey and flagging energy levels on arrival, I defy anyone to not want to get stuck in and immediately explore every nook and cranny of this vast yet intimate resort, integrated perfectly as it is within an ecosystem teaming with bird and unique wildlife. The bulk of the rooms of this recently upgraded resort feature mesmerising views of Datai Bay and the surrounding forested hillside, as well as near and distant islands. Many of the rooms

and suites have private or shared plunge pools but all manage to inspire a unique phenomenon, in that no matter how many times you’ve grabbed a camera to capture the intoxicating outlook, you find yourself reaching for it time and again in search of the next perfect shot. WORLD CLASS. Few photographs do it justice, however. The

Andaman features all you would expect of a world-class resort – restaurants and bars of superb quality, unsurpassed vistas and an array of laidback water sports, including snorkelling the coral reef directly off the beach. Perched high on a bluff with commanding Bay views, V Integrated Wellness is arguably one of the most scenic spa treatment centres on earth and there are many tranquil, secluded spots under the canopy of trees at the beach or around the pool area to disappear with a book and your thoughts. CAREFUL CONSERVATION. As impressive as The Andaman’s

physical attributes is, it is its philosophy towards conservation measures that’s at the very heart of the resort’s ethos and operations. Impacted as it was by the 2004 tsunami, the reef areas located in the shallows off Datai Bay are being systematically and lovingly restored by an inspirational partnership between The Andaman and marine biology students from local university campuses on Langkawi. Guests can dive with students based at The Andaman to retrieve living coral specimens from the bay, relocating them to a conservation pool that has been established on the grounds. Guided snorkelling tours are also available for guests to view the marine life being nurtured to more robust health before their eventual return to the bay. The Andaman’s marketing executive, Edeline Berg, also points out the resort’s passion for sustainability and support for the community by sourcing local produce where possible. Native fruits and vegetables indigenous to Langkawi are integrated into menus and seafood is purchased twice a week from local fishermen 35

who pull their boats up to shore outside the beautiful beachfront restaurant, Jala. The entire seafood menu of Jala (‘Fisherman’s Net’) is determined by the catch of the day, with guests able to choose and discuss the preparation of their dishes directly with the executive chefs. Jala, the adjacent Beach Bar and Tepian Laut restaurant are all a step from the beachfront and the sound of waves gently lapping against the shore. Barefoot dining is encouraged but especially so at the sand floored Jala, to heighten ‘all five senses’ during your dining experience. 36

UNUSUAL DESIGN. Rejuvenated by The Andaman, I eagerly took

the short trip up the road for a game at one of the most exciting new golf courses in the world, the Els Club Teluk Datai (Datai Bay on translation). The Australian brothers Geoff and Ted Parslow designed the original course over 20 years ago and Ernie Els was brought in to undertake a redevelopment of the layout and the re-naming to the Els Club Teluk Datai over the past few years. The most unique feature of the new design is the removal of all existing bunkers, a decision taken to fight against the high

Malaysia.qxp_St Enodoc 28.09.2016 11.37 Side 6

maintenance impact of seasonal monsoon rainfall that had required an almost daily rebuild by green staff. Els has compensated for these lack of traditional hazards by integrating hollows and false fronts into the design, not to mention water and creek beds, and there is enough movement and pitch to the greens to keep golfers of all standards more than honest. In past visits, I’d not played golf here but had marvelled from a road that dissected part of the course from the Andaman coastline at a green perched seemingly on the edge of the shimmering sea, with nothing between it and the islands in the

distance that form part of Thailand. How exciting it was to return to find local authorities had conceded to re-routing the road to enable Els to bring more of this spectacular coastline into play. BREATHTAKING VIEWS. Each of the nines meander into the

ancient rainforest framed by jagged mountainous peaks before returning to the coast with a visual assault of blue that takes your breath away. The rich green carpet of turf was flawless and provided beautiful playing conditions, with inquisitive dusky leaf monkeys 37

Malaysia.qxp_St Enodoc 28.09.2016 11.37 Side 7

rustling in the trees and impressive eagles soaring overhead. Els and his team have constructed two par-threes that are incorporated into the one double green complex; one a short three running along the jagged edge of the coastal wall and the other playing at a more robust 170m, directly back towards the Andaman. At 579m from the tips, the double dogleg par-five 7th is one of the more spectacular and strategically interesting par-fives you’ll play. Taking the more dangerous line down the right of the left to right shaped tree-lined fairway improves your angle considerably, before the hole sweeps in the opposite direction to reveal an approach to a narrow green sitting tantalisingly on the precipice of the vast expanse of water beyond. Ocean breezes are an integral consideration in the judgement of your approach and the steep bank fronting the green is a popular spot, as erring long will do you no favours. The 8th hole, also a lengthy par-five, features the most demanding driving hole on the course, with a rocky creek to be avoided along the entire left. The fairway then curls to the left to set up a view of the green, protected by the same creek bed that dissects the fairway diagonally. Managed by Troon Golf, the remodelled layout and world-class clubhouse and practice facilities have attracted rave reviews and international recognition but perhaps none more validating than the recent Golf Digest ranking of the ‘World’s Top 100 Courses’, which has the Els Club Teluk Datai debuting at No. 83. The 19th hole at the Els Club was a comfortable sanctuary after the round, but so too was my ‘20th hole’ later that afternoon on return to The Andaman. I relaxed with a refreshment or two in lazy chairs at the Beach Bar, drinking in the setting sun over the bay as the cool of the evening slowly enveloped us. This is one tough place to leave but we were resolute in our determination to return to again to soak up the unique experience that The Andaman and Els Club Teluk Datai combine to provide. GGM 38

Piedmont Region Piedmont is located in the northwest and borders Switzerland and France. Roughly translated, Piedmont means “foot of the mountain”, a very apt title for a region that is surrounded on three sides by the Alps. More than 30 Alpine peaks, some reaching to over 3,000 metres, have acted as a boundary over the centuries and allowed Piedmont to develop in its own unique way. This is the home of the white truffle of Alba, whose intense aroma and flavour can turn the plainest of dishes into something truly magnificent. The wine areas of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2014. There are five distinct wine-growing districts within this beautiful landscape and such notables as Barolo, Barbaresco, Asti Spumante and Barbera d'Asti all come from here. TURIN. Turin, the capital of the duchy of the House of Savoy during the 16th Century, became the first capital of a united Italy in 1861. Boasting an artistic and architectural heritage dating from Roman times, every street and piazza is a surprise to the senses and offers the opportunity to visit numerous art galleries, churches, palaces and museums. GOLF COURSES. Having a well-established golfing network with

a phenomenal abundance of golf clubs spread around the region,

Piedmont has much to offer the visiting golfer. GOLF CLUB BIELLA. Golf Club Biella Le Betulle (The Birches)

is a parkland golf course and was designed by John Morrison. It plays out over a natural landscape which is reminiscent of England in style and feel. CASTELCONTURBIA GOLF CLUB. Built in 1898 under the direction of Count Gaspar Voli, a frequent visitor to Scotland, Castelconturbia was the first course to be built in the Piedmont region. The course fell into disrepair during the 1960’s but the 1980’s saw the club reopened after extensive work and further holes were added to bring it up to its present total of twenty-seven. BOGOGNO GOLF CLUB. Located not far from Milan Malpensa and Lake Maggiore, Bogogno Golf Club has two stunning 18 hole courses created by Robert von Hagge, the Bonora Course and the Del Conte Course. ROYAL PARK GOLF CLUB. There are two 18 hole courses here, the Trent Jones Sr and the Pramerica by Hurdzan-Fry. Both are exceptional with a creative use of bunkers and water hazards.

LOMBARDY REGION One of Italy’s largest regions, Lombardy neighbours with Switzerland. Lombardy has a wide range of landscapes, of which the Lakes Como, Maggiore, and Garda understandably are of prime importance. Traditional trattorias and multi-award-winning restaurants highlight the region’s culinary tradition with cuisine comprising of risottos, pumpkin tortelli, cassoeula and cheeses like Taleggio and Grana Padano. Some of the country’s finest wines are grown in Franciacorta, the Oltrepò Pavese and the zone of Garda. All have world-class wineries, not to mention Valtellina, whose mountain wines have such an intense flavour. MILAN. You just cannot visit Lombardy without visiting Milan,

the European capital of fashion. A veritable metropolis for shopping, Milan is also famous for its restaurants. If it’s culture that you are after, the Gothic Duomo di Milano cathedral and the Santa Maria delle Grazie convent, which houses Leonardo da Vinci’s mural The Last Supper, are not to be missed. GOLF. With over sixty golf courses within the region,

Lombardy could be said to be where golf is most prominent. With a backdrop of the Alps, the Italian Lakes or its historical towns and cities, the options are endless.

LAKE COMO GOLF. Nine exclusive clubs with spectacular views of the lake are to be found here and several courses have hosted some of the biggest international golf events. A stay at one of the luxury hotels located around the lake or within the town of Como make this an ideal destination for golfers. LAKE GARDA GOLF. Beautiful scenery, Mediterranean vegetation and a wide variety of world-class golf resorts welcome the golfer to Lake Garda, a real golf holiday contender. The ability to play all year round due to its warm, temperate climate opens up the possibilities for a round or two when other courses may be closed. MILAN GOLF. Just a short distance from the business and fashion capital, you will find golf courses which will remind you of those back in England. Some of the oldest and most prestigious courses in Italy, they regularly host international tournaments and championships, and are open and available to the visitor. LAKE MAGGIORE GOLF. Lush forests, the lake, and a backdrop

of the Monte Rosa mountain range create a magical place to visit and play golf. Every course has a story to tell, diverse and fascinating, with combinations of forests, streams, magnificent views, striking fairways and lush greens. www.in-lombardia.com

LIGURIA REGION Liguria is located in northwest Italy, wrapping itself in an arch across a long section of the Mediterranean coastline until it reaches France. Described as the Italian Riviera, the region is home to everything from rolling hills to mountains and, of course, the ever-present sea. Liguria is rich with vineyards and olive groves, producing extra-virgin olive oils and good quality wines. Having a Mediterranean coastline, seafood and fish dishes are part of the culture, with fish soups a popular dish as well as stuffed and fried sardines. GENOA. Described as “a beauty that tears at the soul” this, the

largest of Italy’s sea ports, is unquestionably the gateway to the Riviera. For a period from the 12th Century onwards, the Republic of Genoa held dominance over the Mediterranean. In recent years, the city has undergone a transformation, with the port area now home to the largest aquarium in Europe. GOLF. With a host of golf courses offering a smorgasbord of choices, Liguria is a hot contender for anyone, especially those keen to be close to the sea. CIRCOLO GOLF DEGLI ULIVI. A beautiful course set in the hills

close to the coast and with magnificent panoramic views out to the sea. This is a par-69 course that is not overly long but it requires forethought and technical ability. GARLENDA GOLF CLUB. Founded in 1964 by two British designers, John Morrison and John Harris, the course is situated 44

in the picturesque Lerrone valley and surrounded by ancient olive groves and pine forests. The Lerrone river flows alongside several fairways and comes into play on several holes. RAPALLO GOLF CLUB. Opened in 1931, Rapallo is situated in

the Tigullio region. Its 18 hole course offers a varied and stimulating game that has numerous natural hazards that demand precision playing. ST. ANNA GOLF CLUB. Situated between the hills above Arenzano,

the St. Anna Golf Club has stunning views over the surrounding mountains and forests. With its close proximity to Genoa airport, this course is really worth a visit. Italy - So much more The unquestionable truth is that these Italian regions offer so much more than most people realise. This is a land forged by the Roman Empire, and history and culture are to be found everywhere. The only real thing to do now is come and see for yourself. f you’re looking for some winter sun that doesn’t take hours and hours to get to or break the bank when you’re there, then Cyprus ticks all the boxes. A word of advice, if you do decide to visit Cyprus, make sure that you fly to Paphos. It’s not thatStadium Larnaca airport is that far away as this is an Course 17th hole, TPC Sawgrass island after all, but landing at Paphos puts you right in the heart of Golf Central. And if you are here for that purpose, then you need to be on the west side of the island. It’s a short drive from airport to the city, soon to be European Capital of Culture for 2017. With a myriad of choices of hotels, holiday apartments and villas for every budget and all four golf courses close by, this really is a great base. However, if you are hoping for a smaller, less touristy town, you could opt for Polis, which is to be found along the coast to the west. Staying here will give you a more authentic Cypriot atmosphere, but you then have a drive of 30–45 minutes to most of the courses rather than 10–20 minutes.

I

the golf course, mountains or sea. There are a selection of restaurants and bars covering most tastes, from a la carte fine dining, to international buffet. The award-winning Retreat Spa, offers state-of-the-art facilities to make your stay even more restful after a long day of golf. ASIMINIA SUITES. Also located on the south side of Paphos, but

much closer to the city, is the Asimina. About 15 minutes’ drive from the airport, it is part of the Constantinou Brothers chain of hotels and properties. This adult-only hotel (others in the group are child-friendly) is brimming over with comfort and there are no screaming toddlers or stressed out parents in sight. It is also perfectly placed for reaching all of the golf courses. Positioned right on the beach and also having two swimming pools, there are plenty of opportunities to cool off from the hot Cypriot sun. The rooms are tastefully decorated and all the suites have large balconies on which to relax and watch the sun set into the sea.

APHRODITE HILLS HOTEL This hotel, south of Paphos, is located

next to the Aphrodite Hills Golf Course and overlooks the glittering blue Mediterranean Sea. It manages to combine the classic with the contemporary and is a perfect choice for individuals, couples and families. The rooms and suites are spacious and luxuriously furnished, with either balconies or a terrace from which to enjoy views of 48

CAPITAL COAST RESORT & SPA. This hotel is located between

the old harbour and Coral Bay in Paphos. It has various combinations of bedrooms and executive suites designed for individuals, couples or families. There are a wide variety of water activities on hand as well as a lighted tennis court, children’s outdoor playground, gardens,

restaurants, bars and lounges. The health club has an indoor heated pool, steam room, Finnish sauna, fitness centre, gym and aerobics studio. The Anemones Spa offers a Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, as well as massage and beauty treatments.

Cyprus has a smaller number of courses. But how many do you want to play, or can physically play, while on holiday? For me it’s very much a case of quality, and the choices to be found here are all of a high standard and with a variety of settings and formats to please all, from mountains to fairways with Mediterranean views.

THANOS ALMYRA. If you want the convenience of the city whilst

also having direct access to the seafront, then go for this stunning hotel as it is right on the beach and very close to the town centre. A landmark since the 1970s, upon being acquired by the Thanos group the hotel underwent major works to create what is now one of the most opulent designer hotels in town, with an attention to detail that creates a feeling of calmness and order. THANOS ANASSA. If you are looking for that extra touch of

luxury in a calm and relaxing environment, then the Thanos Anassa is for you. Yes, it is further from the airport, located near to the town of Polis and so a longer drive to most of the golf courses (although Minthis Hills is only 20 minutes away), but that feeling of total relaxation in this unique makes it all worthwhile. With its own private beach and located within beautiful Cypriot scenery, this is a special place to really unwind. The spa facilities are wonderful and also don’t forget to have a meal in the award-winning Basiliko restaurant. TIME FOR GOLF. Compared to other well know golf locations,

APHRODITE HILLS. This is probably the best known of the four

– it’s an 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Cabell Robinson and completed in 2002. It winds its way through the surrounding valleys and into the hills, many of the holes offering stunning views of the sea and mountains. Right from the first hole, a par-4 with an old smelting kiln slap bang in the middle (just to give you something to aim at), you get a taste of what is to come. The course is well laid out, with plenty to keep all golfers interested. Holes three and seven both require shots over a ravine to reach the fairways and greens. The third, a challenging par-5 from the back tees and seventh being a beautiful par-3. Believe you me, you would not want to go into either ravine to find your ball... The third is the most daunting purely because of its length, but both are regular shots if you don’t let the physiologically omnipresent ravines freak you out. The ninth brings you back to the hotel and towards the cliffs, with views out to sea. The back nine continues in the same manner with a good smattering of lengths and surprises. I would 49

Aphrodite Hills

recommend a round later in the day to witness the sun setting into the Mediterranean. It is a joy for all and as easy or as hard as you want to make it. SECRET VALLEY. This course is very close to Aphrodite Hills, to the point that you can see several of its neighbour’s fairways perched on the hills above. I have wondered on previous trips, whether it would be possible to take a shot from one course to the other, maybe for the big hitters. As the name ‘Secret Valley’ suggests, it is tucked away in a valley and surrounded by the very same hills as Aphrodite. The course has recently undergone extensive work to expand its offerings to golfers. The course offers superb golf in a relaxed environment. As you work your way from hole to hole down the valley, you are treated to views of the sea and the surrounding hillside. And after a round, a meal at the modern clubhouse is not to be missed. ELÉA GOLF CULB. Located close to town, this is a superb Nick Faldo designed golf course, but beware, it’s wonderfully deceptive. From the clubhouse above the course, it all seems relatively flat and quite tame. But once you get out there and in the thick of it, you soon realise that the terrain is extremely varied. You really need to have your game hat on, but it’s an absolute delight to play. Starting off from the elevated first tee, a lovely par-4 with a dogleg left, gives you an impressive view of what is to come… the bunkers! Be wary of the bunkers. I am not saying that every hole is littered with them, but they are tactically placed to make you think and push yourself. It’s when you reach the second hole you will really see what I mean. Teeing off on this par-5, you will need to keep to the right to avoid a veritable army of the things. Should you survive this, your second shot will require some serious thought as you have bunkers on both sides of the green and another protecting it. Then you have the fourth hole to deal with, and yes, there are more bunkers. But it is fantastic to play here. I recommend this course for the thoughtful golfer rather than your hit-hard-and-hope types. MINTHIS HILLS. Located roughly 15 minutes away from Paphos,

just off the road to Polis, this club enjoys a backdrop of the Troodos Mountains. It commands superb views of the surrounding peaks and the course gives you a real Cypriot experience. It is, in 50

GREAT GOLF MAGAZINE

fact, situated on the grounds of a twelfth century monastery, and some buildings can be found near the fourth hole. Minthis Hills is always in exceptional condition and the surroundings are just inspiring. Being located 550 metres above sea level guarantees a cool breeze, which can be very welcome on a hot day. With a good combination of lengths and hazards, I would defy anyone not to enjoy a round here. This is a delightful course in tranquil surroundings and it’s very accessible to anyone staying in the vicinity. WHEN TO VISIT. Any time of the year can be good but I love to come here in either spring or autumn. But even during the dark months of January and February, when northern Europe is cold and wet, you will find warm temperatures here. I have visited in February and enjoyed a round in the most temperate of climates. Late winter is a great time to also experience the orange harvest, and why not take a trip up into the Troodos Mountains and visit some of the amazing wineries to be found here. If you think that you know Cyprus, think again. GGM

y editor’s remit was clear and unequivocal: ‘Drive to Bentley Glasgow and imagine you are in the market for a prestigious car, bearing the iconic ‘Flying B’ on the tip of its bonnet.’ While the prospect of owning a Bentley seemed an otherworldly notion, I readily accepted my task. I arrived at Bentley Glasgow, located to the south of Scotland's largest city and conveniently positioned close to the A74(M). The retailer is actually located in Hamilton, a charming town famed for its racecourse, interestingly named football team, Hamilton Academical F.C, and Chatelherault Country Park, the former hunting lodge and summer house of the Duke of Hamilton. It surprises me how car dealerships have evolved in the last 30 years. As a young boy, I visited car garages with my parents whenever our modest family saloon needed replacing. This ritual, which typically occurred every two years, was a schoolboy treat I eagerly embraced. I can still recall the showroom floors clad in linoleum and the air rich with an omnipresent octaneinfused odour.

M

NO CLUTTER. However, as I entered the modern showroom of

Bentley Glasgow, I noted the blemish-free marble floor and the distinct absence of clutter. An array of new vehicles shimmered beneath the bright halogen bulbs and the near aseptic environment was a far cry from the garages of my youth. Large plasma televisions perpetually showcased Hollywood-style promotional videos and I spotted the pristinely attired staff, 60

offering cappuccinos and espressos in ceramic cups. This seemed a very civilised place to spend a morning. I stood admiring the drop-dead gorgeous new cars in the showroom and was momentarily lost in a sea of leather, walnut and sinuous bodywork. However, with my editor’s words still ringing in my ears, I entered the office of Neil McCallum, Brand Manager of Bentley Glasgow, eager to learn more about PreOwning a Bentley. Access to a Pre-Owned Bentley can start from less than £30,000, a sum which can easily be spent on a mundane, medium-sized executive saloon. Higher up the price range, a youthful Bentley may well prove an interesting alternative to a Mercedes S-Class or BMW 7-series. This potentially brings a finely executed luxury vehicle, imbued with a high quotient of hand craftsmanship, within the financial grasp of many, including yours truly. Moreover, a well-chosen, cherished car can offer much better residual values than some newly registered vehicles. DETAILED HISTORY. The words ‘Bentley Pre-Owned’ are intended to grant a high degree of owner peace of mind. Firstly, the provenance of the vehicle is checked. In fact, only Bentley can provide such a detailed history, tracing the origins of the vehicle to the day it left the production line. Moreover, the identities of former keepers, as well as the authorised service history, are also a matter of record. Neil explained that the vehicle is often known to the retailer, for instance, they may have supplied it when new or carried out the ongoing servicing.

Bentley.qxp_Layout 1 28.09.2016 13.01 Side 4

Bentley owners have a tendency to remain loyal, serially purchasing replacement vehicles from the same marque. As such, it is usual for Neil and his colleagues to have sold the same vehicle to successive owners over a number of years. “Similar to gold bullion being hallmarked,” Neil explained, “Only Bentley can truly hallmark a Pre-Owned vehicle.” I am 49 and have become increasingly cynical with old age, hence I did not feel disposed to merely accepting a few sound bites; I wanted to see evidence of this so-called peace of mind. Firstly, I wanted to know more about the procurement process used when selecting vehicles for this programme. I was escorted outside to look at a 2007 Bentley Continental GT. The vehicle had arrived from a non-franchised retailer for repair. I watched with a degree of curiosity as McCallum proceeded to run the tips of his fingers along the edges of the doors, bonnet and boot. He also appeared to spend an inordinate amount of time looking at the front wings, inside the engine bay and within certain areas of the boot. Thereafter, he pointed out the various clues that revealed the car had been in one or more accidents and had not been repaired by an Approved Bentley bodyshop. “We would not place this vehicle on our forecourt; it does not meet our standards,” Neil proclaimed. THE WORKSHOP. Thereafter, I went to the valeting bay. There, sat resplendently in the corner of the room, was a 2012 Continental GT V8 in Dragon Red. Oh, it was so beautiful, I began calculating which assets I could dispose of in order to

facilitate acquisition. However, whilst this appeared perfect to my non-expert eyes, I was informed it was not yet ready for sale. The car was midway through a three day detailing process. I watched Rory, a Car Detailer of some nine years, apply various polishes to the vehicle and painstakingly buff the panels. His patience was rewarded. I couldn’t find any swirl-like blemishes on the epidermis of the multi-layered paintwork. Again, Neil’s discriminating fingers came out to play, pointing out the originality of the paintwork and the notable absence of any poorly executed repair damage. Moving to the workshop, I was introduced to Peter Gentles, the Retail After Sales Manager and Bentley veteran, with over 45 years of experience. Here, the glossy exterior evident at the front of house was matched with the operating-theatre sterility of the workshop. The tiled floor was dry and free of any oil spillages. On being introduced to Martin, a Master Technician, I could not help but notice his fingers. They were free of oil and well manicured, which left me pondering how the cars were serviced. Martin explained that while suspension components, brakes and gearboxes necessitate physical handling, an increasing proportion of his daily duties centre upon the many electronic systems found on a Bentley, necessitating the use of a laptop computer. The Flying Spur model has approximately 40 ECUs responsible for an array of functions. Martin, clearly a highly trained technician, began to use terms such as ‘CAN bus electrical systems’ at which point I became duly bamboozled. While independent garages have 61

access to some of the electronic systems, there are some areas of a Bentley that are only accessible to an authorised retailer. WARRANTY. My desire for a Pre-Owned Bentley was beginning to grow exponentially with each passing moment. However, I then began to ponder the practicality of owning such a vehicle. Mark Keeping, Head of Pre-Owned cars for Bentley Motors, explained, “The warranty is limited to the parts and labour costs, up to an aggregate sum equivalent to the value of the vehicle.” 62

GREAT GOLF MAGAZINE

Moreover, Keeping added, “We have such confidence in our product, that we offer a warranty on vehicles up to 11 years old. If an owner wishes to take out a three year warranty on an 11 year old vehicle at the time of purchase, the car is potentially covered up to 14 years of age.” In addition, some clients select a service package, providing fixed cost maintenance and another dose of peace of mind. It is this statement of reassurance which appears to pervade the whole of the Bentley Pre-Owned experience.

Bentley does not differentiate between those clients who purchase new vehicles and those individuals who select a PreOwned car. All Pre-Owned customers are invited to tour Bentley’s factory and partake in the marque’s many exciting events, including negotiating the challenging corners of the iconic Nürburgring. This may sound strange, but McCallum explained that often, after purchasing a Bentley for the first time, many clients repeatedly ‘trade-up’, selecting ever newer vehicles and, in some instances, migrating to a new car. Clients choose the Pre-Owned route to Bentley ownership for an array of reasons. For example, some well-healed individuals take this path as a means of validating the merit of Bentley ownership prior to taking the full plunge and buying new. Alternatively, some aspiring ‘Bentley Boys’, or girls, decide to purchase a ready-built, classic vehicle, not wishing to wait for a car to be built to order. The fact is, Bentley clearly understands the importance of customer delight, whether selecting new or Pre-Owned, allocating a degree of care seldom found with more pedestrian car brands. THE FLYING SPUR. Whilst here I wanted to see some of the Pre-

Owned cars available for sale. Some were virtually newborn, with a recent plate and very low mileage. A typical vehicle is 33 months old at the time of purchase, according to the brand’s research. One 64

GREAT GOLF MAGAZINE

Bentley specifically caught my eye; a Continental Flying Spur, equipped with the highly desirable Mulliner Driving Specification. The car was presented in Silver Tempest, with an interior clad in swathes of Portland leather, a rather comely shade of grey-hued hide. Despite being first registered in September 2007 and having covered 53,229 miles, the car looked remarkably fresh. I looked at the blemish-free 20-inch Speed Style alloy wheels and noted how the seats still possessed new-car freshness and support. The only indication that the vehicle had seen service on the road were a few inconspicuous stone chips near the front apron. “We would not look to respray or touch up those marks, ‘originality’ is absolute and that car is very original,” explained Neil. And he was correct, it was very original and touching up the paintwork would only mar this quality. A few years ago, I drove a new Bentley Mulsanne and waxed lyrical about its majestic ride within the pages of Great Golf. Eager to consummate my newfound admiration for Bentley’s Pre-Owned vehicles, the prestigious car marque handed me the keys to a Flying Spur. I left the warm embrace of the Bentley Glasgow team and headed home in serene comfort, keen to explore every facet of Bentley ownership. In the next issue of Great Golf, I will report back on my experience, however, whilst I don't wish to divulge too much at this stage, rest assured my affection for this most British of brands shows no signs of abating any time soon. or most Brits, a Florida holiday means theme parks or beaches. But how about packing your golf clubs as well? Take a coast-to-coast golfing trip from its historic, Atlantic-facing north-east to the balmy Gulf of Mexico shores in the south-west, stopping off in central Florida, and you can play some notable golf courses – with plenty of time for fun off the fairways. Arriving at Orlando Sanford Airport, five of us, including two non-golfers, set off on a rollercoaster road trip up and down Florida’s highways and byways in a rental minivan. We take it in turns driving, covering some 900 miles in seven days (Florida is larger than England and Wales combined) and manage to play eight rounds, all on different courses. With no traffic nightmares, it is effortless burning up the miles on Florida’s roads. Our first destination is Ponte Vedra Beach, close to the Georgia border, to stay at the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa after sunset cocktails and dinner overlooking the ocean at the resort’s Cabana Beach Club.

HOME OF PGA. Next morning, we head over to the adjacent TPC

Sawgrass – home to golf ’s unofficial “fifth major”, the Players Championship, and headquarters for the PGA Tour. Timing is everything in golf, though, and unfortunately our visit coincides with major renovations that have closed both Pete Dye’s celebrated Stadium Course and its unsung sibling, Dye’s Valley Course. However, we get a guided tour of the palatial clubhouse followed by a buggy ride to see the three finishing holes of the Stadium Course that have delivered so much drama over the years. Among them, the intimidating par-3 17th, with its island green buttressed by railway sleepers. There is no bail out. You make the green or you’re wet. Close up and without the baying, beer-fuelled crowds, it looks short and innocuous. But having played Sawgrass on a previous visit, I vividly remember the fear factor building steadily through the round. Finally reaching the 17th tee, I was such a bag of nerves that I dunked two balls straight in the lake – and promptly swapped my wedge for my camera. Each year, divers retrieve more than

Although we cannot play, we are given an hour’s lesson at the PGA TOUR Academy where the tour pros polish their techniques. No wonder those guys are good; a simple fix transforms my golf swing in minutes. We transfer to the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club’s venerable Ocean Course, just behind the beach. Selected to host the 1939 Ryder Cup, it never hosted it as the onset of World War II resulted in its cancellation. The course has water on 14 holes, including the first island green ever built on its par-3 9th (which I par!), but it is the stuff that starts falling like stair rods from the sky accompanied by lightning bolts that sends us seeking refuge under the roof of a luxury villa being built alongside. It is a theme set to dog us repeatedly. We tee up the following day on the King & Bear, one of two collaborative creations by golfing legends at the World Golf

Village. A joint design by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, the King & Bear is a tour de force that seamlessly combines the best of both styles, with their individual influences evident throughout. A variety of trees border the fairways and you have to negotiate coquina waste areas, and left and right doglegs edged by lakes. The Slammer & Squire is named after its co-consultants, multiple major winners Sam Snead and Gene Sarazen, and is a testing challenge through native flatwoods, hardwood hammocks and wetland preserves. HALL OF FAME. The World Golf Village includes the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum, a shrine to golf and its greats housed in a tower resembling a Mormon temple. There is also a lake with a replica of the TPC Stadium’s 17th, where a big cash prize rewards anyone acing the hole. At least I make that green within a couple of attempts. This corner of the state is known as Florida’s First Coast of Golf after historic St Augustine, the oldest city in the US, founded by 69

Spanish conquistadors in 1565. We visit the ancient, seafront Castillo de San Marcos, America’s oldest masonry fortification, moving on to the St Augustine Distillery, newly opened in Florida’s first ice manufacturing plant. A tour is followed by tastings of Florida Mule, the distillery’s Floridian slant on the traditional Moscow Mule, mixing soda water, syrup, lime juice and ginger juice with its own cane vodka and served over crushed ice. A great way to forget the day’s poor shots and putts. It seems a shame not to stay longer in St Augustine. But we need to press on and hit the road for Orlando’s neighbour, Kissimmee, where we will be staying at Reunion Resort. Although right on the doorstep of Walt Disney World, Kissimmee also offers a taste of Florida’s wilder side. An hour’s drive east the next day takes us to Harmony Golf Preserve, a Johnny Miller signature course managed by Troon Golf that is a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary and incorporates wildlife-rich natural wetlands. Every hole is edged by ponds, most with resident alligators. Besides the course’s signature bird, the 70

red-capped sand crane, you can also see many other species, including red-shouldered hawks, wild turkeys and vultures, as well as the footprints of deer, bobcats and raccoons. The bat house, near the 250-yard mark on the par-5 8th hole, is home to 500 bats which stream out at dusk to feast on mosquitoes. But slap on the insect repellant anyway - there are plenty the bats miss. THE EVERGLADES. Wild Florida, our next stop, is a wildlife park

on the edge of a large lake forming part of the Everglades headwaters. After getting up close and personal with a baby gator and watching feeding time for some of its huge adult cousins, a storm breaks as we are about to board an airboat and we take cover. When the rain eases, we are welcomed aboard by our skipper, the aptly named Captain Kirk! And for the next hour, he takes us on an exhilarating ride through the lake-edge marshes, boldly going where -- it feels -- no man has gone before, and showing us sights including an alligator nest with baby gators and a swimming snake.

Dinner, in the Reunion Grande’s rooftop Eleven restaurant, gives a glorious panorama of Reunion Resort and great views of the fireworks display at Disney’s Epcot park. Dawn sees us teeing off on Reunion’s Nicklaus Course. One of the three by golf giants at Reunion – the others being by Tom Watson and Arnold Palmer – it is parkland-style and designed to be a players’ course rather than a tame resort facility. It tempts you to take on risky shots that, if they come off, bring reward. You can almost hear Jack whispering as you ponder your line on the par-4 2nd tee, “well, punk, do you feel lucky…?” The signature 16th hole is a daunting par-3 with a long carry over water to a shallow green flanked by deep bunkers. Before leaving Kissimmee, we head to neighbouring resort ChampionsGate, World HQ for the Leadbetter Golf Academy. Featuring two Greg Norman courses, the International feels like an Australian coastal links and I have played it before. We play the National, a Florida-style layout set amidst mature native trees with small, tricky greens. Both are equally enjoyable.

HISTORIC PLACE. Another 250 miles later, we check in to the

majestic, 100-year-old Gasparilla Inn & Club on Gasparilla Island, on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Listed on America’s National Register of Historic Places, it has been host to presidents, movie stars and other rich and famous guests over the years. Its genteel atmosphere is like stepping back in time, and it even has croquet. But we forego that to play its Pete Dye golf course, a beauty with all but two holes laid out on a barrier island and holes 12-17 playing directly along scenic Charlotte Harbour. Having pelicans fly overhead or boats cruise right past as you are putting or teeing off is somewhat distracting, but what an experience. Only residents of the 137-room hotel and golf club members can play so, like us, you may well have the course to yourself. While our hosts drive the minivan with our bags on the circuitous, 100-mile road journey to the laid-back South Seas Island Resort on the tip of Captiva Island, we hop on a catamaran for a leisurely 90-minute cruise from Boca Grande Marina, right by the hotel, watching golfers as we sail past the Dye course. 71

Gasparilla Inn & Club

There’s time for golf on the resort’s nine-hole Captiva Course, which skirts a white-sand beach and the clear, blue Gulf of Mexico waters. It may only be a par 3 course, but it’s a stunner – and we even spot manatees just offshore. The day is capped by an amazing sunset from the beach and harbourside dinner. Nature calls once more the next day. Driving to Sanibel Island, we play The Dunes course. At just 5,500 yards, it is short. But the ever-present water makes for tactical golf on the front nine while the back nine plays through an Audubon-certified wildlife preserve, with alligators, nesting bald eagles and hunting ospreys among the resident wildlife. A MUST PLAY COURSE. Our final golfing stop is another natural

wilderness – Old Corkscrew Golf Club, a signature Jack Nicklaus course set in 275 acres of thickly-wooded natural preserve. I had turned up to play the course on a previous visit, only to find it flooded from torrential overnight rain. So I am excited about finally playing it. For 13 holes, Old Corkscrew lives up to its billing as one of Florida’s must-play courses, with sculpted fairways, subtle greens and challenging hazards. Until a storm that has been brewing suddenly erupts with Armageddon-like fury. We shelter for almost two hours as torrents of rain turn buggy paths into rivers and forked lightning strikes nearby trees. After it passes, we return to the clubhouse, the course now unplayable. One day I will play all 18 holes! More drama unfolds after I take the wheel for the return journey to Sanford Airport, when a front tyre punctures on Interstate 4. We discover there is no jack for the spare wheel so we are marooned, with trucks thundering past dangerously close. Thankfully, a Road Ranger patrolman comes to our rescue after an hour and we are soon on our way, making our flight home just in time. STREAMSONG. On our final leg, we pass agonisingly close to Streamsong, a luxury golf resort carved out of a long-derelict phosphate mine, but have no time to divert. Returning to Florida several months later, this time I fit in a visit. Ultra-modern hotel and clubhouse buildings look out over two top-rated courses that are like Scottish links draped over pock-marked dunes – but transplanted to Florida with lakes teeming with turtles and huge, cruising alligators. I play the Tom Doak-designed Blue Course (the Red Course is 72

by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw while a third, by Olympic course architect Gil Hanse, opens in late 2017) and am having one of the rounds of my life on a truly magnificent layout, when ominous black clouds appear. After driving off on the 13th, the lightning hooter sounds and my caddy tells me we have to return to the clubhouse. Once again, a round is thwarted by the weather. If planning my own Florida coast-to-coast golf trip, I would include Streamsong, with time to play both courses. I would also make it 10 days or longer, and I would tee off in the mornings to avoid Florida’s frequent afternoon thunderstorms… GGM GOOD TO KNOW GETTING THERE/GETTING AROUND Direct daily flights are operated from London and regional UK airports to Orlando International and Orlando Sanford airports by several airlines. GREAT WATCHES

Time redefined Walking in the well-worn tracks of others accords a high degree of safety. Conversely, exploring undiscovered territories, while riskier, can result in wonderful discoveries. And this is the path that HYT Watches has chosen to follow‌ By Angus Davies, www.escapementmagazine.com Photo by HYT

GREAT WATCHES

YT, the Swiss watch company, founded in 2012, embarked on an avant-garde crusade. It encountered numerous technical obstacles along the way but, with perseverance, ultimately delivered a new interpretation of luxury watchmaking. Thousands of primary school children have been taught that the long hand on the clock shows minutes while the shorter hand indicates hours. However, HYT Watches eschewed this comparatively prosaic means of displaying time. Encircling the dial of most HYT timepieces is a fine glass capillary containing two liquids. One liquid is aqueous and suffused with colour, while a second liquid, clear and nonmiscible in character, sits adjacent. The crescent-shaped device, which forms between the two liquids, corresponds with markings presented next to the capillary, denoting the prevailing hour. This groundbreaking means of displaying time is remarkable considering the liquids are moved using a combination of bellows pumps and mechanical watchmaking know-how. Indeed, there is a distinct absence of batteries, making the technical prowess of each HYT timepiece even more impressive.

H

THE FIRST DESIGN. The initial model released by HYT was the H1 and it remains a staple of the brand to this day. Its hand-wound movement transmits energy to a pump located in the southeasterly area of the dial. This pump transfers a coloured liquid from a dedicated reservoir beneath and propels it around the circumference of the dial. Simultaneously, a second bellows pump, positioned adjacent the first, receives the clear liquid and resettles the fluid within a second reservoir. When the coloured liquid reaches 0600 hours and 1800 hours, it moves counter-clockwise, enters its exclusive reservoir and recommences its journey from the 6 o'clock position. In order to prevent any bubbles forming or the coloured liquid splitting, an ingenious brake system inhibits the anti-clockwise motion of the coloured liquid. As soon as the HYT H1 was unveiled, it wowed the world's watch press and astounded observers with its technical brilliance. Moreover, the virtuosity of this timepiece led to the Swiss watch company receiving the highly prestigious Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève Innovation Prize in 2012. The concept of two liquids collaborating together to

impart time is based on the notion that oil and water do not mix. However, HYT has expended much energy ensuring that should the watch be subjected to a significant shock, the two liquids remain discrete. HYT released its inaugural timepiece with a bright green aqueous liquid. However, it soon experimented with other eye-catching hues. Red, blue and, most recently, black have all found service within the clear glass capillaries of HYT's models. The introduction of new shades only occurs after protracted research and development. A newly developed water-based coloured liquid must not be affected by UVlight and needs to remain distinct from its pigment-free neighbour. CRAFTMANSHIP. HYT has not abandoned traditional watchmaking. The HYT Calibre 101 is the manually wound movement found within the H1. It is similar to the mechanical heart found in many fine historical timepieces. Winding the crown imparts energy to the mainspring, which powers the aforementioned bellows pumps. As well as displaying hours, the H1 indicates minutes and seconds. A power reserve indicator displays the amount of available energy stored within the spring barrel, effectively the fuel tank of the watch. An indication of fine watchmaking is the finishing, applied to movement components. In the case of the HYT Calibre 101, the execution is flawless. Indeed, the Swiss company upholds the no-compromise craftsmanship found on traditional exemplars of haute horlogerie. Movement components are imbued with gloriously gleaming bevels, executed with the deft use of hand tools. The 'bridges' are adorned with a series of parallel lines, termed 'Côtes de Genève' motif and the wheels feature 'circular graining', a series of concentric fine rings.

SWISS

A NEW ADDITION. In 2013, after the resounding success of the HYT H1, the company released the H2 model. This timepiece presents the bellows pumps in a V-arrangement, resembling the appearance of cylinders found within a highpowered engine. The prestigious movement specialist, Audemars Piguet

78

GREAT GOLF MAGAZINE

Renaud Papi, exclusively produces the movement within the H2 for HYT. It incorporates two spring barrels, effectively two fuel tanks, delivering an impressive power reserve of 192 hours. Pulling the crown from the case in a series of stages, allows the wearer to adjust the hands (H) and wind the watch (R). The H2, usefully includes a 'crown position' indicator, displaying (N) for neutral, similar to a car, or 'H' or 'R' when applicable. GROWING FAMILY. The inextricable link between time and mortality has historically been referenced with so-called 'skull watches'. This genre of timepiece reminds the wearer that time is precious and should never be squandered. Once again, HYT's creative design team brought out the brand's chemistry set and penned a highly individual skull watch of its own. When the rectangular-shaped H3 broke cover, it used bellows pumps to drive liquids in a horizontal plane from left to right, depicting time against a series of revolving hour markers in a breathtakingly ingenious, linear fashion. At first glance, the H4 Alinghi shares a passing resemblance with its older sibling the H1. However, this timepiece, which references the brand's association with the Swiss-based sailing team, features a push-piece on its left flank, adjacent 4:30. Should the wearer choose to read the dial in darkness, pressing the push-piece bathes the display in light. Once more, HYT rejects battery power in favour of a dynamo, creating energy purely with the motion of pressing the push-piece. A NEW CHAPTER. Innovation does not always yield

progress; sometimes new products deliver creativity at the expense of function or practicality. Despite some inventive timepieces proving meritorious they may still struggle to achieve commercial success purely because of the conservative purchasing habits of the watch-buying public. However, the courage of HYT and its investors has been vindicated with continued sales growth. The brand from Neuchâtel, situated deep in the watchmaking heartland of Switzerland, has drawn on traditional know-how, melded it with a futuristic vision of tomorrow and, in so doing, delivers unique timepieces for today's horological connoisseurs. ed Rum. It’s a name that resonates with the British public, thanks to the heroics of the beloved threetime Grand National champion. Now there’s a new red rum to savour and it is fast coming up on the rails in the drinks world. Conceived and distilled in the UK and launched to the public in March 2015, Morant Bay Signature Edition Spiced Red Rum is the only red rum produced in the UK. In addition, it’s the only craftsman-produced, non-traditional red rum in the world. However, its origins are very much steeped in Jamaica, as are the ingredients that give this drink its distinctive colour and taste. The man behind Morant Bay has a background as colourful as his creation. Peter Townsend is a teetotal former cop and onetime Motown musician whose family has been running a sugar cane plantation in Jamaica for almost 125 years. Born and raised in South London after his parents emigrated to Britain in the early 1960s, Peter spent nine years with the Metropolitan Police as a neighbourhood office and police constable before quitting to follow his dream. He proceeded to set up the Morant Bay Distillery Company with his wife, Nicki.

FAMILY ROOTS Peter returned to his family roots for the venture.

Although based in Croydon, the company’s name is taken from a town in the parish of Westmoreland, Jamaica. Here, Peter’s great grandfather, James Townsend, bought a plot of land in 1893 as a 19-year-old and started growing sugar cane, initially selling the produce locally but then supplying cane and molasses (black treacle) to Tate & Lyle. The plantation was passed on to Peter’s grandfather, Lopez, on his death in 1940. Peter’s father, Brenton, took over running the estate when he died in 1981, having returned to Jamaica with wife Glenies. On their deaths, in 2014 and 2012 respectively, the sugar estate was left to the fourth Townsend generation of Peter and his three siblings – Colleen, Juliet and Dexter – and it is still run by the family. Besides sugar cane and blackstrap molasses, the estate also produces fruits and botanicals. And it is those products, sourced from the plantation, that are used in the production process of the Morant Bay rum. The delicate infusion of Jamaican hibiscus flowers, sorrel, cherries and spices are among the constituent elements that give it the pinkish hue and characteristic sweet flavours.

Rum.qxp_Layout 1 28.09.2016 13.29 Side 4

Peter turned to the multiple award-winning independent distillery – the English Spirit Distillery Company – which was established in 2009 and which produces its own range of spirits and liqueurs, for help in developing his rum.

DESIGNER BOTTLES. Following a rebrand earlier this year, the rum is now positioned as a premium product, enhanced by its specially-designed bottles, crystal decanters and other branded items. Its 42 per cent strength and Caribbean flavours make it ideal as a cocktail mixer and Morant Bay has teamed up with mixologist Alessio Franzese, bar manager at the Rum & Sugar bar, near London’s Canary Wharf, to create a series of cocktail recipes based on its red rum. In addition, the company is working with master chocolatier Paul Wayne Gregory, who is creating a series of rum-infused chocolate products – among them golf balls packaged in sleeves of three, just like real golf balls – and with Caribbean-born chef Jason Howard, who is spearheading the Rum Dining Revolution, combining Caribbean food with rum-infused or paired dishes.

the distillery now produces and bottles the rum at its plant in Great Yeldham, north Essex, replicating the Jamaica climate for rum production. Morant Bay’s rum is fermented, triple-distilled and aged in temperature-controlled conditions under the watchful eye of founder John Walters, a master distiller who is a doctor of biochemistry. Since launching, Morant Bay’s Signature Edition Spiced Red Rum has won a silver award in the 2015 International Spirits Challenge and is up for more honours in overseas competitions. Now family and staff are busy attending food and drink festivals, country fairs and music events to spread awareness of the rum and build up a buzz about the drink. So far the feedback has been nothing but positive. The company also supports soul music quintet The British

Morant Bay is really having fun with its rum. It has just held a rum masterclass at Rum & Sugar for a delegation from Italy’s University of Gastronomic Sciences, exploring the history of rum, and food pairing with various cocktails. WORLDWIDE BRANDING. Available on its website in bottle sizes

from 5cl to 75cl and via online retailer Master of Malt, Morant Bay’s Signature Edition Spiced Red Rum is due to be stocked by upmarket hotel chains and top-end stores. Distribution negotiations are also under way with companies in Canada and India, and others are set to follow to take the brand worldwide. And while the company will focus its UK efforts on the red rum, the goal is to open a distillery back in the family’s homeland, Jamaica. Here the plan is to produce traditional Jamaican rum, and a potential investor has signalled interest in taking that forward. Everyone involved with Morant Bay is regarded as part of the extended Townsend family. “They are all under the umbrella of our family. Some of the members are not immediate family but we adopt them,” Townsend says, adding that it is very Jamaican to do that. “That’s why I want to push on with building the distillery in Jamaica. We’re desperately trying to create jobs in the community for people that don’t have anything, people who can’t read or write. To me, they are still human beings and they deserve to have some form of life. If we can teach some of those people how to become a master at what we want them to do then it gives them a purpose. I’m just doing what my mum and dad did, basically, which is caring for people.” If Morant Bay’s Signature Red Rum gets the backing of the public and proves itself a champion, it won’t just be the company that finds itself in the winners’ circle – the locals in Westmoreland, Jamaica, will have reason to cheer as well. hanks to its nearly 120 natural thermal springs, the highest concentration on earth, Budapest is the city to visit when looking for a true spa experience. In the last few decades, spa and wellness travel has skyrocketed in popularity, but the history of spa culture goes back to ancient times and the use of curative waters. In fact, the dictionary defines the word spa as ‘a place where water that has many minerals in it comes up naturally from the ground and where people go to improve their health by swimming in, bathing in, or drinking the water’. Emperor Marcus Aurelius built the first thermal bath in Budapest, with most of the bathhouses established by the Turks in the 16th century. Today there are over 50 places to take the waters, from beautiful Ottoman influenced bathhouses to Art Nouveau wonders and modern structures.

by surprise. Insider tip three: you can rent towels, but they’re flimsy. Bring your own from your hotel instead. Many bathhouses also offer spa services, but if you want to partake in a massage you need to specify that when you buy your entrance ticket. You’ll also want to make sure you buy a private cabin for changing and storing your belongings.

BRING YOUR OWN TOWEL. Picking your bathhouse is a tough choice. Most are similar with indoor thermal pools, saunas, steam room and cooler plunge pools. Some have large outdoor pools as well. Insider tip one: spas still have male and female days along with mixed gender pools, so check ahead of time. Insider tip two: swimming caps are required for both sexes at some spas – that one caught me

GELLERT. The most famous and certainly the best Art Nouveau bathhouse is Gellert. In the 1920s it was the heart of Budapest social life, and today intricate tile work and statues make it arguably the most beautiful bath in town. There are a whopping 12 pools to choose from including eight thermal baths, two effervescent baths and three outdoor pools. For a VIP experience, buy a couples’

SMELLY WATER. For the most authentic Turkish bath experience, head to the Rudas Baths. The centerpiece is a large domed octagonal pool. You’ll also find six thermal pools, a rooftop pool and Jacuzzi that offers a stunning view of the city. For the bold, there is a drinking hall featuring mineral water from three springs. Drinking the water from the Juventus spring is said to be akin to drinking from the Fountain of Youth. Unfortunately, youth comes with the price of downing very warm, very sulpheric smelling water.

While a bathhouse is an ode to the past, for a modern, luxurious spa experience you’re going to want to head to a five-star hotel spa. I start my spa afternoon at the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus with lunch at world-famous Nobu. Japanese cuisine is my favorite and Nobu doesn’t disappoint with sea bass sashimi, an assortment of sushi rolls and a refreshing watermelon granita. At the spa, my friend and I relax by the pool and use the sauna and steam. I’m amused by the rack outside the sauna which stores your eyeglasses whilst you steam up inside. MINERAL MUD. In addition to therapeutic water,

Hungary is known for its mineral mud so I opt for the signature Hungary Holistic treatment. After a dry body brush, I’m slathered in the mud that is known to help muscle and joint pain and aid circulation, and then wrapped up tight. While the mud works its magic, my therapist performs a mini-facial using England’s own Elemental Herbology products. I love the smell and feel of these plant-based skin wonders. After showering off the mud, the service concludes with a light massage. The Four Seasons Gresham Palace, on the bank of the Danube, is the top hotel in the city and your ideal base for exploring all of Buda and Pest. It also has one of the best spas to enjoy another authentic experience – an Omorovicza Facial.

SKINCARE. In the 1800s the Omorovicza family built the Racz Spa (now closed). 200 years later Stephen Omorovicza and his wife Margaret experienced the baths of Budapest and were amazed by the transformation of their skin. With the help of a prize-winning lab, they created a skincare line that harnesses the power of the healing waters. The Blue Diamond Facial is exclusive to the Four Seasons spa and uses Omorovicza’s Hydro Mineral Transference delivery system and diamond peptides to supercharge cells and accelerate the oxygenation of the skin and the synthesis of new collagen and elastin. The products are driven deep into the dermis using traditional Hungarian facial massage techniques that also help lift and firm the skin. From 2,000 year-old cures, to modern science based skincare, a wellness weekend in Budapest is the perfect solution for whatever ails you. GGM

SHERRY GOLF JEREZ esigned by Stirling & Martin from Global Golf Company, Sherry Golf appears like an accessible course for amateurs and challenging for professionals. We are also the official venue of the 2nd Stage of the PGA Qualifying School. The layout is characterized as being one of the most pleasant walkthroughs in Spain: - 18 holes Championship course: 6572 meters, Par 72 - Pitch & Putt course: 911 meters, Par 3 Sherry Golf is within the new concepts of American golf course design: fun but safe in the game with undulations and well placed hazards, without making it too hilly, in order to ensure a pleasant

walkthrough. Wide fairways and ample greens, puts Sherry Golf into the category of a luxury course. The Clubhouse counts more than 2,800 sq metres designed under the Sherry flair, with a warm, welcoming atmosphere just like the city of Jerez. Its facilities caters to every single aspect of the sport as well as tournaments, including pro-shop, club storage room, locker rooms, restaurant, terrace grill, cafeteria, spike bar, lounges, golf academy, and much more.
