B

annas have long been thought to bring bad luck on ships. At the height of the empire between Spain and the Caribbean in the 1700s, most cases of disapearing ships happened to be carrying a cargo of bananas at the time they went missing. Other say that the methana gas given off by the fermented bananas would become trapped below deck. Anyone in the hold (particulary aboard a slave ship}, woulf inhale the toxic air and succumb to the deadly fate. A final theory is that a spevies of deadly spiders would be hidden inside of the banana buches. The spider’s lethal bite caused crewmen to die suddenly, if they were lucky, otherwise it would be a long painful death. Heightening the fear that banana cargo was a bad omen on a cargo ship.

Interviewed by: Timber Gray Wolf

Q

How long have you been into the pirate life and what made you want to be a pirate?

I have been into the pirate life for about 5 years now or as Jimmy Buffett says,” I was born 200 years too late”….I began my pirate life after a chance meeting with Captain Stouty at the now defunct Mayfaire festival in Marshall, Michigan. I began to think that how kwel it would be to be a pirate. Then I met Admiral Morgan at the Michigan Renaissance Festival. I got to speak with her about becoming a pirate and she told me if I wanted to be a pirate I should join the Brethen of the Great Lakes. …. The next thing I did was the best thing I could have done which was put a message out there on their web site looking for a ship to join. To my good luck, Captain Barbanegro messaged me back and invited me to join the good ship Crysta

Q

Does your pirate prosoma have a back story?

I based my back story on an English man of means that had lost all his wealth and had to go to work as sailor. One day our ship was attacked by pirates …we were all given a choice to die or join the pirate crew… I joined! My name, Maddog, came from my Captain he, told me I fight like a Maddog and the name stuck.

Q

What do you like the most about going to the events and what is one of your favorite so far?

The most thing I like about going to events is no matter where you may go, there are always pirates to drink with, chat and have fun with. My favorite festival is Michigan Renaissance Festival in Holly,Michigan….but my favorite event is and will be Buccaneer camp in Mt Pleasant ,where we learn to sword fight with a master of sword play, cook our meals as the pirates may have done, shooting pistols and firing the cannon. All the necessary life skills a pirate would need to know , all in a wooded surrounding. Our next adventure is learning to man and a sail a real sailing ship. Can’t wait!

Q

What is some the inspiration behind your garb?

The story behind me grab is …. From a nobleman to a scallywag,it pretty much tells my story.

Q

Outside of going to events, are there days that you just Garb up and go out on the town. If so what type of place do you happen to go and do?

Outside of going to events ,I have went on a couple of cruises, parades and to all-inclusive resorts with pirates in paradise and have taken my garb with me to wear … I’ve also wore my garb to the movie, Pirates of the Caribbean .

Q

Is there anything you would like to share with our readers?

Q

From the great list of out there, what is one of your favorite pirate movies or books?

My favorite pirate movie is treasure island …Long John Silver at his best

7) I have found that being a pirate has been very rewarding …I’ve gone from a scallywag to a navigator and now I am a sail master with a lot of hard work and paying attention to my captain. I like to thank my Joyzilla for a her support

The term “frigate” refers to a class of warship built for speed and maneuverability. Though the term has evolved some over the centuries to cover differing hull, rigging, and armament set-ups, frigates by and large are larger, surprisingly maneuverable ships, with a long hull. They are able to resist the ravages of battle long enough to dish back the damage with their 28+ guns. Today “frigate” describes a class of ship used to protect other warships and merchantmarine ships, though many ships more closely resemble destroyers and cruisers. Larger frigates (what we think of as most frigates) are of Dutch origin, having been developed by the Dutch to battle the Spanish during the Eighty Years War. The Dutch navies needed three things of these ships: Protecting their merchant ships at sea, blockading Spanish-held ports (at the time, the port at Flanders), and battle the Spanish at sea and prevent troops from landing. The first-battle capable frigates were built around 1600. These ships had a long hull (making them quick), weighed some 300 tons, and carried around 40 guns. Its design and use in battle were so successful that not only had the Dutch entirely switched from larger ships to the frigates by the end of the Eighty Years War, but the English and other navies adopted similar designs.

English navies developed larger frigates than the Dutch, beginning in the 1650s. These “great frigates” had two decks and stocked 60 guns. On par with “great ships” (British naval term for two-decker ships with 40 to 60 guns) of the time, frigates pushed the development of broadside tactics in warfare. Some English ships at the time also had a set of oars below the upper deck, and were known as galley frigates. The idea was to use the oars to propel the ship without a favorable wind. Classic sailing frigates are the type of vessels made famous during the Napoleonic wars. Of French design, this vessel had only minor changes over the original Dutch design. These ships had all their guns on the top deck and square rigged sails. Below decks was used as a berth deck, housing the crew. This berth deck was made below the waterline for these frigates. Not to be out done, the United States developed its own frigate, adequately dubbed the “super frigate”. Three of their original six ships were rated as 44 gun frigates, but operationally carried fifty six to sixty guns on

two decks. Under the direction of Joshua Humphreys, These ships were made of live oak, grown only in America, that yielded strong planks almost a foot thick. 16 diagonal riders set at 45 degree angels maintained the shape of the hull. These ships were so well built that one of them, the USS Constitution, is still afloat today, despite being launched in 1797 and serving 85 years of active service. Though this article does not mention frigates in terms of piracy, frigates did a lot to shape the world’s most powerful navies of the time. Heavily armed but fast, frigates played key roles in many historic battles. Over the centuries, as iron and steam replaced wood, frigates took on escort roles to larger ships. With the rise of missile technology, frigates were again back to the front lines of naval warfare. World War Two saw frigates equipped with surface-to-air missiles, and were very effective in anti-aircraft roles. Nearly all modern frigates are equipped with some form of missile today, and form the core of many navies’ fleet defense platforms.

This is the third year for this event to be hoist, second year being at the B.K. Club in Mishawaka IN, as well my second time vending at the event. The event is just set back from the down town stretch of Main Street. For the location being indoors it is a great location.

event. Soon little bit by bit waves of people would flood into the events space, slowing selling items through each wave. Over all it was a slow day for us this year, but we enjoy chatting with those around us. We made enough to cover our booth and some. The best way to think about it is, for what we paid we had a good place to sit and relax.

The morning started off with Star~Dust, Melolly, and myself heading west bound to Mishawaka, IN. Traveling through light traffic and plenty of rain. When we arrived channel 22 News was there doing some light filming of the location, found out later that I was caught in most of the background. Once we got our spot, set up went fairly quickly and being in the center row we had a double front to set up on. We were also close enough to the stage that we could hear the performers, but not so close that we couldn’t hear our customers.

When it came to time to tear down and cleanup it went fast with 5 people, yet tear down always seems to go faster. We ended up at the same Dairy Queen as we did last year for dinner, where the employees got a kick out of seeing a group of pirates wondering in out of the rain.

Shortly after being set up, Elise W’nstrom and Dueien D’mont arrived with more stock to put and then were sent on a breakfast run. The event kicked off at 10pm, with a slow start, like any other

After enjoying our meal we returned to the B.K. Club for the evening festivities. Were

we enjoyed great music and entertainment from Wakefire. With my body feeling plenty numb from taking plenty of pain relievers due to a migraine I had for most of the day, I danced it I couldn’t anymore. Like most events there is a raffle, this raffle many of the prizes were donated by the vendors. I had donated one of my art prints and signed it as well. The person that won it got excited when they found a hidden Tardis in the background. We ended the night tired and ready for some rest as we left for the night. I look forward to next year’s event a hope that they might find a larger venue as it feels that it been getting tighter as the years have passed.

Shanties Upon the Silver Moon Shiver Me Timbers - Muppet’s Treasure Island

Shiver my timbers, shiver my soul Yo ho, heave ho There are men whose hearts as black as coal Yo ho, heave ho And they sailed their ship ‘cross the ocean blue A bloodthirsty captain and a cutthroat crew. It’s as dark a tale as was ever told Of the lust for treasure and the love of gold... Shiver my timbers, shiver my sides Yo ho, heave ho There are hungers as strong as the wind and tides Yo ho, heave ho And those buccaneers drowned there sins in rum The devil himself would have to call them scum! Every man on board would have killed his mate for a bag of guineas or a piece of eight, a piece of eight, a piece of eight Five, six, seven, eight Hulla wacka, ulla wacka, something not right Many wicked, icky things gonna happen tonight Hulla wacka, moola wacka, sailor man, beware When de money in de ground, there’s murder in the air, Murder in the air. One more time now Shiver my timbers, shiver my bones Yo ho, heave ho There are secrets that sleep with old Davy Jones Yo ho, heave ho When the mainsail’s set and the anchor’s weighed There’s no turning back from any course that’s laid And when greed and villainy sail the sea, You can bet your boots there’ll be treachery (Laughter) Shiver my timbers, shiver my sails Dead men tell no tales!
