This everyday idiom can be traced back to the 1830’s. It is believed that the phrase is a shartened form of the nautical phrase “under the weather bow”. Which reference to the windward side of the ship’s bow; the side of the ship whitch takes the brunt of high seas. Originally, it referred to being seasick. During storms or high seas, when passengers and crew were feeling ill, they would go below deck away from the bad weather to recover where the motion of the boat was less noticeable. Nowadays, it generally means to feel ill or unwell.
Captain Jameson von Greywolfe’s Rum Review - Mocambo Produced in Cordoba, Mexico where Don Juan, en Don Augustin signed the Tratados de Cordoba to give and ratify Mexico’s independence in 1821. The city itself was founded and established in 1618 to protect the royal b me from attacks by Gaspar Yanga’s rebellion. He was the leader of a large marroon colony, what is now Yanga but once was called San Lorenzo de Cerralvo. In 1618 he achieved an agreement with the colonial Spanish monarchy for self rule of his maroon colony.
Mocambo 10 años Solera Limitada rum is distilled in both column and pot stills made from copper. It is blended and then aged in the solera method for up to ten years. There are apparently 2 different proofs it can be found in. This one at 76 proof which is widely sold through out Mexico. I plundered it at the Progresso, Yucatan port. The other can be found elsewhere in Europe at 80 proof. I’ve been wanting this one just for the bottle but wanted to taste it as well. It is of course in the shape of the classic pirate flintlock pistol. The cork unfortunately is synthetic
and not real cork. I think it would be classy and consistent with the theme if it were real cork. The synthetic cork is topped with a wooden cap that has the Jolly Roger emblem on it. The bottle only holds 200 ml, much less than a fifth si the price of 34 American dollars is reflects the bottle shape more than the contents and quantity inside. In the bottle Mocambo 10 Años is a mohogany color, once poured it retains that color but highlights of gold are present in the glass. When swirled it leaves a thin silky film that holds the very slow medium thin legs for a few minutes.
So we plundered the western Caribbean this last week with 2 ports of call with our crew of 50 Nocturnal Pirates of Atlanta that attended. A ton of fun with lots of rum and other drinks with another in the plans for next year to new ports of call. With new rums in my arsenal of spirits I’m ready for more reviews. Seeing the hour and that feeling of sleep after a long nights watch in the nest, I’ll retire to the Captains quarters. Saying that I wish all to please stay safe, stay alert, stay alive, and drink responsibly. Another review will come tonight me hearties, until then, down the hatch.
To the nose woody oak tannins and caramel are presented in the breeze. Dried fruits are also provided, particularly raisin and apricot. There is a faint molasses note in the background. It’s a strange sensation when the rum only has an astringency that burns the tip of the tongue but is warm through out each neat sip It has a light sweet taste with a fresh Cuban cigar note, oak spice throughout accompanied with white pepper flavor that may be a good reason for the warmth. The Mocambo ten is in my opinion is good both neat and over ice. My mixer tonight is lemon lime soda with a wedge of lime. Soda and cola would be great mixers with this rum. A Dirty mojito would be great too as another option. Captain Jameson von Greywolfe

Mermaid
Luna Belle Interviewed by: Timber Gray Wolf
What drew you to the dawn the fins and your driving inspiration? I was mentally in a very dark place. I was scrolling through Instagram and found a photo from a mermaid photoshoot and they looked so happy. I wanted to be happy like that too, so I ordered my first tail. From then on I wanted to spread the magic to everyone and I then began my mermaid performing career. What style of mermaid tail is your favorite to use and how many do you have? My favorite tail in my arsenal right now is a “senior” tail I bought from See Through Sea. She’s crimson, orange, and yellow. She’s almost dragon-esqe in appearance! The tail was very used and loved tail from them, and they treated it amazingly. I bought it on sale and it’s been my favorite ever since. I have a 7 personal tails (silicone and fabric) and 18 tails total (personal tails and tails for teaching mermaid lessons and mermaid style photoshoots). I love each one the same.
Being a preforming Mermaid, what kind of events do you go to and what has been one of your favorites so far? One of my favorite things about being a mermaid at events is seeing the faces of little kids light up and excited to see a real mermaid and interacting with them.
Do you belong to a pod or are you a lone swimmer? I belong to the Minnesota Mer-Pod.
Which of the Great Lakes might we find you swimming in? I swim mainly in Lake Superior but make occasional appearances in Lake Michigan
What do you like the most about going to the events and what is one of your favorite so far? I absolutely adore visiting with children and teaching them fun mermaid tricks. My favorite event so far was visiting some children in a lake. I became friends with a little girl and we were inseparable the whole 5 hours.
What might be your “day job” when walking upon dry land? I work with adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities, I am also a lifeguard and swim instructor, and I am enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as a aircraft rescue and firefighter technician.
Is there anything you would like to share with our readers? I’m an advocate for mental health and I’d love to give some advice. Long before I began my mermaid journey, I suffered from mental health issues. Being a mermaid helped me immensely. Between the confidence it gave me, to spreading the magic to everyone I come across, my goal is to help everyone who needs it. From kids to adults, everyone deserves to feel at peace with themselves. I want everyone to know I am only one message away, and would love to chat. Everyone needs a friend and that’s what I aim to be.
Mark your Calendar, and get ready for the Event season to kick off for 2017. As the year goes on, we shall add more events and update any dates that may change.

Entry 8 - The Storm Journal of Bazel Clement Hopwood
Everything stayed be calm aboard the ship for a few days. Yet the calm never lasts for long on the seas. In the morning, as I walked the deck, I noticed the captain appeared to be on edge more than usual. He kept staring off into the distance behind us, as if looking for something. Was he looking for more Spanish ships? Then I saw it. Coming over the horizon the sky darkened and the clouds seemed to reach for the heavens themselves. “Is there any way we could avoid that?” I asked aloud, hoping to hear a word of good news. Instead I saw most of the crew staring down the storm that was filling the sails with strong winds. Captain Wolf leaned on the railing in front of the helm, looking over his crew. “There be no way we’ll making it out of this dry folks. It has been a while since we been caught in open waters, but it is not our first nor shall it be our last. Everyone knows what must be done. And if the stars been true to us. We all but be a night from the shores of Ireland. It going to be a long night, better get ready for it.” Raising his fist into the air and giving out battle cry, the crew followed as the ship rung out with spirit. I will admit, I too was caught up in the moment and cried out with the crew. Soon the fists of spirit became busy hands; tightening the ropes on the cargo, cannons, and anything else that might move. I tried my best to stay out of the way. The safest place seemed to be on the bridge, watching the storm come closer and closer; cackles of thunder echoed across the sky. Wolf took over the helm from Elise as the winds became stronger. Day turned into night with a flash of lighting. The sea became violent, waves crashing in either side of the Silver Moon. Holding on to the edge of the railing as water splashed over the sides. The ,lightning light up the sky and thunder rung out. Wolf roared back to the at the sky as he gripped the helm’s wheel tightly. I felt a hand pulling at the sleeve of my shirt, I looked to see it was Elise. “Every able body is needed,” she ordered as she lead me into the haul of the ship. I was lead into a

room of several crew members were busy at work on the pump. I stood there watching, then was pushed forward, “get to it Basil”. Grabbing on to the handle next to Dueren, then pumping the arm of the pump up and down. This had to go on for hours, my arms could barely hold on. The slower the two of us got, 2 more crew member pushed through switching with us. While we caught our breath, we jumped back into action. I did not know what I had gotten into. This was out of the norm for me, to do such manual labor, yet there was this drive to work hard next to my fellow man. After hours of pumping the ship seemed to set calmly in the sea. The pumping had came to an end. Looking around the room, everyone laid on the floor or leaned against the wall breathing heavily. At that point Anais and Daniel entered the room, Anais was carrying mugs and Daniel a basket of tack bread. They walked around the room giving each of us one of each. Barely able to lift my arms, I fought to bring the food to my lips. Sitting there realizing, no one had gotten to eat lunch or dinner, this small nibble filled me with content. Once strength returned to my legs and arm, I finished my bread and went up to the upper deck. The sky was clear and filled with stars. Losing myself for a moment watching the lights dance in the night sky. “I heard you earned your keep Bazel” a calm voice came from Wolf. With a light smile and a pat on the shoulder he passed me and left for his cabin. What did he mean I ‘earned my keep’. . .
