Size
Matters Many of us are familiar with the story of Moby Dick written in 1851 by Herman Melville. The story spins a tale of this great white whale of great proportion. But in real life how does a normal human compare to the mass size of a sperm whale? An adult sperm whale weighs in at a whopping 100,00 pounds. For an adult human at 5'6'' the average healthy weight is 140 pound. Given a rough ratio of 700:1 (SW:H). Now here is the fun part for scaling. It would be like a chipmunk weigh in at 3.2oz trying to take on a Human.
“There once was pirate named Gold Roger, who was the King of the Pirates. He had fame, power and wealth beyond your wildest dreams. Before they hung him from the gallows, these were the final words he said;
Fruit. With his diverse crew of pirates, named the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy explores the ocean in search of the world’s ultimate treasure known as “One Piece” in order to become the next Pirate King.
“My fortune is yours for the taking, but you’ll have to find it first. I left everything I own in One Piece.”
The story picks up twenty-two years have passed since Roger’s execution, and Luffy inspired by his childhood idol and powerful pirate “Red Haired” Shanks, sets off on a journey from the East Blue Sea to find the One Piece and become King of the Pirates.
Ever since, pirates from all over the world set sail for the Grand Line searching for One Piece the treasure that will make their dreams come true.” If you read that in the narrator’s voice, you welcome. One Piece is an anime from Japan that came to the United States in 2007. The animated TV show fallowed band of misfit pirates lead by Monkey D. Luffy, young man whose body gains the properties of rubber after unintentionally eating a Devil
In an effort to organize his own crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy rescues and befriends a swordsman named Roronoa Zoro that was sentenced to death, a pirate hunter that mastered the use of 3 swords. They are joined by Nami, a navigator and thief, that didn’t agree to join till sometime late. Usopp, a sniper; a man that tells more stories then truth.
Then Sanji, a womanizing chef; that Luffy recruited by refusing his refusal to joining the crew. In their journey, they acquire a ship named the Going Merry. On their search for One Piece, they engage in confrontations with pirates including Buggy the Clown, Captain Kuro and Don Krieg. After running in with Captain Smoker, a Navy captain who can turn into smoke (from eating a Devil Fruit); the Navy places a bounty on Luffy’s head. They later befriend the doctor and anthropomorphized reindeer Tony Tony Chopper while in Drum Island. All this is happens in the first 100 episodes!
With all of the crazy characters, much of it can be lead back to at one point consuming a Devil Fruit. The Devil Fruit are mystical fruits found in the world that can give the eater many different and varying kinds of strange and interesting abilities, depending on the type and variation of the fruit itself. One Piece can be found in other form. Manga (comic) form is one of the most common, so far there are 783 chapters since released in 1997. While there are 697 episodes, there are several split off series. There are so far 13 animated films.
The Pirate Arsenal: Cannon and Shot During the Age-of-Sail, combat primarily based upon the sharing of broadsides; the utilization of ships’ cannons, or simply the ship’s “guns,” in an attempt to disable or destroy the enemy. Just as with normal vessels, pirates relied on ships' guns and a selection of unique and varied ammunition to plunder the high seas. First, we’ll talk about the cannons themselves. Most ship cannons were of cast iron, although bronze cannon were also sought after for their superior
quality and performance. Cannons would be placed along the length of the ship’s structure, the “broadsides”, meaning the most firepower would come when facing parallel the enemy. The cannons operated similar to that of a musket: a powder charge and shot was rammed down the bore into the main chamber. A fuse was inserted and lit, igniting the powder and propelling the shot out of the cannon. There were many different types of cannon, however all were designated
by the weight of the shot they fired. From small, 1/2 pound swivel guns, to massive 32-, 42-, and even 48- lber guns! The poundage of shot shared a direct correlation with the size of the cannon itself: smaller shot meant a smaller cannon and less space needed. Larger shot also meant more damage. There were also different types of cannons. Standard cannons were simple, smooth-bore designs, but there were also long-barrel variants, meant to fire
farther. However the extended barrel made it more difficult to load, so long barreled cannons were most often used as bow-chasers: cannons placed at the front of the ship used to fire upon fleeing vessels. Traditionally, these would be 9-lber cannons, coming to be known simply as “Long Nines. On the opposite side of the spectrum were carronades. Carronades reversed the process, and traded space and range for weight. Carronades could fire massive shot at closer distances
utilizing less space than traditional cannon. Next, we have what was fired out of a cannon, referred to simply as “Shot.” The standard ammunition was a castiron ball, from which the weight of the gun was derived. This ammunition served a simple purpose: to beat the enemy into submission. Other types of shot had more specialized roles. Dismantling shot, such as bar or chain shot, was used to rip away sails and tear through rigging in order to slow down a ship. Anti-personnel shot was meant to wreak havoc on a ship’s crew, such as in the case of grape and canister shots, comprised of as collection of smaller cast iron rounds, resulting in a type of shotgun effect. But what type of cannon and shot did pirates prefer? It is believed that pirates tended to stick to smaller caliber guns and utilized demisting and antipersonnel shot over larger cannons and traditional shot. Remember, pirates wanted to capture a prize, not sink it; plunder was no good sitting at the bottom of the sea. Larger cannons would have run the risk of sinking a ship before getting to capture it. They also would have slowed down the pirate’s own vessel, making the traditional pirate hit-and-run tactics
unviable. Pirates also would have had a collection of different caliber guns on their ships, as the only way to get more was to salvage them off of other ships. So unlike naval vessels with uniform gundecks of the same caliber, pirate vessels would have varying sizes of cannons. How do we know this? It wasn’t often that pirates kept detailed records of the cannons they carried, so archaeological evidence paints us the best picture. The wreck of none other than the Queen Anne’s Revenge, Blackbeard’s famous flagship, gives us a peak into how pirates have operated. To date, a number of cannon have been salvaged from the wreck, with the largest caliber being only 6 pounds. This is on the smaller size when it comes to cannons at that period. It’s also worth remembering that the QAR was one of the largest pirate vessels at the time; the average pirate most likely would have operated with even smaller cannons. In fact, some pirates plied their trade without cannons at all, plundering smaller vessels with only small arms.
