First Rate In the 1600’s, the British rated their Royal Navy ships according to their size and strength. ‘First Rate’ was the rating given for the largest and most heavilist armed ships. A ship with a 100 or more cannons was a First Rate lineof-battle ship. Second Rate carried 90 to 98 cannons; Third Rate, 64 to 89 cannons: Forth Rate, 50 to 60 cannons. Frigates carrying 20 to 48 cannons were Fifth and Sixth Rate. The designation was use for around 250 years, until steam-powered ships took way to the sea. Today, the phrase is still used to descride something wich is of the highest standard.

Tiberius Flynn Interviewed by: Timber Gray Wolf

Though officially, I’ve only been into the pirate life for 13 or so years, I have Halloween pictures of me dating back to when I was 6 portraying a pirate. You can literally trace my Pirate evolution from the age of 6 to 36. What officially drew me into piracy was my love of history, love of boats, and my love of people who see an unfair system and turn it to their advantage. I’ve been an actor since I was 14 and turning to this life of Piracy just seemed a natural choice. I love boats and sailing as well and have volunteered on board the Tall Ship Elissa down in Galveston, and have done a little boating work in New England. Of course, my main focus in Piracy is the era of the Golden Age of Piracy, where I’ve found that it’s just so fascinating the ins and outs of how it all just happened. How a confluence of events led to such a fascinating few years that are still being celebrated and discussed today

My Pirate’s name is Tiberius Flynn. He was born an orphan in 1698 (some say 1692) and raised in Portree, Scotland by a tavern owner. At the age of 15 in 1713, he was pressed into the British Royal Navy where he worked on several ships. In 1716, Tiberius and many of his crewmates escaped and made way to Nassau where they joined the likes of Benjamin Hornigold, Blackbeard and Sam Bellamy. Tiberius soon took his own ship to make a name for himself and in 1719, he met a young woman named Bella Antonius, from the Danish island of St. Thomas that he married. She soon became a pirate in her own right, known as “The Viking” due to her vicious nature. Tiberius and Bella, never surrendered or took a pardon and some say they’re still out there today roaming the seven seas....

How long have you been into the pirate life and what made you want to be a pirate?

Does your pirate prosoma have a back story?

Q

What is some the inspiration behind your garb?

So, starting off in this 13 years ago in my youth, I originally went for a Jack Sparrow effect. I’ll admit it. But, as I’ve gotten older and wiser, I realized I hated it. I didn’t like having all those dangly bits and all that gear that was just annoying and didn’t serve a purpose and also, wasn’t sailorlike. Not to mention, having to try and use the restroom in all that get-up was really difficult. So, I’ve streamlined my gear to be what I hope is a nice balance of authentic sailor kit and stereotypical Pirate. Tiberius is a no frills, no nonsense down to business Pirate. I would like to make a shout out to Will King at Kings Forge and Muzzleloading, Jeff McKay at Captain Jack’s Pirate Hat’s, Lee Morrisroe at Letter’s of Marque, and Andrea Wakely at Twin Rose Costume Design. If anyone needs pirate gear, these are some of my favorites.

Q

What do you like the most about going to the events and what is one of your favorite so far?

I’ve attended charities, Ren Faires, and the like from Las Vegas to New England. The best thing I like is the comradery. You’re dressed as a pirate, I’m dressed as a pirate…. We’re friends. I don’t care if your gear is $20 Walmart gear or if you’re wearing the finest, most historically accurate garb out there, we’re Pirates! I’ve made great friends and shared great memories with people that I just met, only because we were dressed as Pirates. Right now, I sometimes hang out with the Northeast Buccaneers solely because I moved to New England, put out some feelers on Facebook and through the sheer love of Piracy found a group that accepted me with open arms. I will always have a fond area in my heart for The Texas Ren Faire, as it was my first ren faire. But TRF is just so massive now and commercialized…. I prefer the smaller ones. The Louisiana Ren Faire is one of my favorites out there, I would say, followed closely by Sherwood Forest Faire which is in McDade, Texas. They’re smaller and you have more of a chance to meet people and just hang out. I really want to get down to Florida and get into some of those amazing Pirate festivals….

Q

Outside of going to events, are there days that you just Garb up and go out on the town. If so what type of place do you happen to go and do?

What Pirate isn’t worth his salt if he doesn’t go out and about? I’ve tromped through Galveston, Texas in my gear and invaded the Tall Ship Elissa during a charity event. It was an open bar pirate event which was poor planning on their part. They did not hold that event the next year for some reason. A few years ago, I pillaged New Orleans during Halloween and hung out in Laftte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar. I currently live in New England and we are planning a Pirate Pub crawl in Portsmouth, NH, for Sept. 19th (Talk Like a Pirate Day). I’m also planning a trip in June 2018 to literally stay in Treasure Island Las Vegas and just hangout and about in my gear and see how many tips I can get!

Q

Is there anything you would like to share with our readers?

Really, all I can think of is, have fun. This hobby is about history and learning but at the end of the day we’re all here because we enjoy it. I’ve met amazing people from one end of the USA to the other and I’ve had some amazing experiences just because I put on a few bits of Pirate gear and had a can do attitude. I met my wife, a sailor and Pirate enthusiast because of this hobby. The sky....er....sea is the limit. Don’t be afraid to go out there and just be a Pirate because everyone loves a good (bad?) Pirate. Also, try and keep some Pirattitude in your every day civilian life. Remember, Tiberius Flynn’s motto: Life’s not about being Fair, it’s about evening the odds.

Q

From the great list of out there, what is one of your favorite pirate movies or books?

Would it be too stereotypical of me to say that I love Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson? I’m currently on my 12thth read through after acquiring the annotated version from Barnes and Noble. I also love, “Republic of Pirates” by Colin Woodward. It was a very fast read and well written with great information. I, of course, love most of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and the Black Sails series. I’m also a fan of some of the lesser known stuff. I own and love all of“The Adventures of Long John Silver” series that was the last bit of work that the infamous Robert Newton performed. Any Errol Flynn pirate movie is just fascinating… Captain Blood, The Sea Hawks, etc. I’d also like to mention my love of Blackbeard Portrayals. I still say to this day the Angus McFayden is the best Blackbeard ever in an otherwise unremarkable movie followed only by James Purefoy and Robert Newton as my two other favorite Blackbeards. I feel that Ian McShane and Ray Stevenson were great potentials that were somehow wasted by the writers of their respective shows.

Q

What is your day job outside of pirating?

Currently, my civilian job is as an Information Technology Specialist in a University Audio Visual Department. It sounds pretty important and technical but for the most part it’s telling people that they have the wrong cable plugged into the wrong port and their computer is turned off…. And these are the people educating young minds today…..

Q

How long have you been in to Steampunk and what got you into it?

Stormee Knight Interviewed by: Timber Gray Wolf

I first heard of it about 6 years ago. Was at the Texas Renaissance festival and met a small group of folks. We started talking and I was intrigued at how they support the reconstruction and maintenance of the USS Texas anchored in Deer Park Texas. I still have the Challenge Coin given to me by the Commander of the Lost Prophet Fleet. I carry it with me daily. Reading books here and there I became a bit more curious. I have pictures of my Great-grandmother from the early 1900’s, in the most beautiful yet simple Victorian blouses and skirts. These are my original inspirations and have given me the latest idea to create a merge of Victorian/Edwardian and Pirate outfit. Thank you to my Grammie for showing me how to sew!

Q

Does your Steampunk prosoma have a back story?

The best I can describe my Character is a bit dark. She comes from the Victorian Era, named Stormee Knight. She’s time hopped, from the 1700’s in times of pirates when many women weren’t on the ships let alone leading men, and into the future, in a more dystopian world where women can be fearless. Always, the main strength is her independence. Knowledge is her weapon of choice. Sharing with folks along the way experiences of what she’s seen, the unbelievable and the visual with costume.

Q

From the great list of out there, what is one of your favorite Steampunk movies or books?

Of course I have loved many! The original Time Machine has always been a favorite. Both book and movie. Probably where the first idea popped into my head about what I would be like if I could time hop. Some of my favorite movies are Van Helsing and even though not a big at the box office I loved the campy Wild Wild West (with Will Smith). I am currently in the beginning of reading a witty series called the Parasol Protectorate Series. Enjoying the Victorian Steampunk flavor the author has captured within the pages. I love all things Paranormal as well as dark fantasies. This series provides all into one!

Q

What is one of your favorite things about being a steampunk?

The new and original ideas, the storylines are endless for folks to choose from. I love all things Victorian anyway and Steampunk brings the flavor of a Mad Max era and mixes it with Victorian. Nothing is pigeon holed when it comes to Steam punk. So many genres of costuming, weaponry and role playing are all involved, evolved into one new category!

Q

What is your theory on the steampunk universe, as what caused the world to stop at steam-power?

I don’t think it stopped at Steam-power‌I think the world used up the other resources and thus had to return to a more basic power source. Again time travel is very handy along with the knowledge you collect along the way.

Q

Outside of going to events, are there days that you just Garb up and go out on the town. If so what type of place do you happen to go and do?

Outside of going to events, are there days that you just Garb up and go out on the town. If so what type of place do you happen to go and do? A: ABSOLUTELY! It’s not just about Steampunk for us here though. We live on an artsy and quirky island. Originally from Michigan I came to Texas in 1980 on vacation and have been here since. Galveston Island gives me the opportunity to showcase my garb on any or every day I choose. A stroll on the Strand in any particular Garb is always fun for everyone. We also carry our Drabbit puppets with us and folks visiting are always curious. Some days it may take up to two hours to walk one block. The pictures, the questions, the kids all make any day fun when in Garb. I have hosted Pirate invasions here on the island known for the infamous Jean LaFitte! Dickens Festival is always a huge success here the first Saturday of every December and you see so many creative ideas. In the most recent years the festival has had a Steampunk Market square! Full of not only costumes to purchase but also parts, ideas and more folks into STEAMPUNK!

Q

What is one of your favorite parts of going to events?

The people. The amount of folks I have met, engaged in conversation with, shared ideas and stories is incredible. I’ve been to several different festivals and some may not have exactly what the garb of the day may be, but it always sparks conversation between folks I have never met and myself. Encouraging others to step out of their comfort zone sometimes can be pretty rewarding. It’s so nice when you meet someone, discuss ideas and such and a year later they show you what they came up with…all because they were inspired by the imagination of a woman who refuses to stop playing dress up. Seeing the face of a kid when a group of pirates are hanging around, the people, young and old, fascinated by the weaponry and gear created for steampunk, and even the little kid who questioned the Santa in the Mall because he didn’t have the real “Mrs. Claus (Me, aka Candy Claus, Keeper of the Naughty or Nice book” with him…It’s all the reason why I’m known for my costume designs and bringing them to life. I love sharing, love teaching new generations to sew and create. Inspiring others to just try. If they have an idea in mind and can’t quite figure out how to get it going, I’m all about helping them get there. I have been designing and making my garb with the exception of my corsets for years. Right down to designing my own pirate boots and hiring an old school cordwainer to make them. Maybe one day I’ll pursue leather, but for now I’m very happy with recreating and merging time periods with my sewing!

Entry 1 - A new World Journal of Bazel Clement Hopwood

Ellow, my name is Bazel Clement Hopwood and I am a British Men of Letters. My story I am about to share, many will not believe. My story starts with my first field study case, which took me to the New World of the West Indies. Usually when stories of Witches, Demons, Monsters, and other unholy beings come to us, we simply dispatch a hunt to take care of the problem. But due to this unknown land, we wanted to research it first, before we sent in the dogs. While traveling with a few of the said dogs, we traveled along the West Indies. I was filling out one journal after another of the local Lore, myths, and stories of creatures and beings; that walk the land or in the depth of the sea. I was starting to enjoy the time in this new world if it wasn’t for the blasted heat and the outrageous amount of flying pest. The things I did learn, this new world was far from anything us Men of Letters had ever seen. It seemed that those of Man that was looking for a new start, so were these things. Many of them tried acting human; I don’t know what was more disgusting to think that they were doing it or that the locals accepted them as equals. I know these lands had to be cleared to eliminate any possible chaos. Even thou we were supposed to wait to engage them till my report was made, the dogs got hungry, so to speak. Not truly knowing what these creatures could do and simply based of the lore we know from other countries was not enough. We came across a small village outside of Kingston, that there was attacks of was believed to be a Lagahoo. A Lagahoo was said to take a form of a man during the day and turn into nasty creature of nightmares at night. From what information we could get from the villagers, this sounded like a shapeshifter. All we needed was to set a simple trap and stab the creature with a silver blade. Well it seemed like an easy job for the Hunters. Unfortunately, one of the villagers that we talked to must have been the Lagahoo. We never prepared for such a monstrosity. It had us running for our lives through a jungle we did not know. Every time we though we saw the lights of the village, it was candles placed in a trap for us. This thing knew what we were and wanted

us dead that night. I am still not sure if I got lucky when I tripped and fell into the river, that if It thought I was going to die or just wanted to toy with me longer. I woke up on the banks of the river near the village. I knew I had to leave the island right away. I gathered all my notes and ran to the beach to see if any the villagers would transport me to the Kingston port so I get charter a ship to Bristol, England. Every person I begged to get me out of there looked away. They knew I was marked for dead and wanted nothing to do with it. I managed to find a small boat near the end of the shore and made my own way to Kingston. By the time I arrived to the port, the night was falling and I had to make haste to escape from the island. Each ship I stopped at, all of them turned me away as none of them where planning on traveling that far for one man. I learned real quickly that mentioning that I was British also got turned me away. I came to the last ship in the harbor, loading what seemed to be the last of its cargo and what seemed like a lot. I went with a crafty why to find out if I could procure information of which the ship was heading. By asking “What kind of people would be such need of these fine spices”? A young man with hair grey as a morning London fog replied “Those Brits, they go crazy for them”. He had an English accent with a touch of what sounded Irish. “Might your captain be open to passengers, I don’t take up much room”. “We don’t take pass…” I quickly pull a small pouch with what I had left, 40 shillings and held it out with one hand. He took a look at me if I was bit touched in the head, he took the bag, gave it a small toss in his hand and gave a grin, “Looks like we do now”. He tucked the pouch into his sash, looking back up at the deck, there was someone overlooking what was going on. The young man gave a glance to me then looking up at this man on the deck with a nod back and forth as if words were being shared. He led me to onto the ship. The crew was buzzing about the deck and the haul. “Welcome aboard the Silver Moon and I shall be your Captain, Timber Gray Wolf”, I stood there in shock, to my disbelief the young man I was talking to was in fact the captain of the ship and what kind of name is Timber Gray Wolf. I was quickly shown to my quarters, all I was thinking, “I hope I wasn’t just taken for my money”.
