Q
Q
I’m lucky that I have many friends and family that support me in my reeneacting life; they are the reasons why I was able to win this month’s PotM
I have always been interested in pirates and not just the Hollywood versions though they (Erroll Flynn, Long John Silver, etc) were definitely the gate-way for me. I have been a reenactor and stage who performer since 2004 - what began as being color in the lanes at Kansas City Renaissance Festival (KCRF) ended up a fortunate mistake with stage time 1 week before opening weekend. Thus began my stage performance career with my group, The Ladies of the Salty Kiss.
Right till about the end,Tracey Anderson-Casner and you were neck and neck for votes, any words of victory?
How long have you been into the pirate life and what made you want to be a pirate?
Q
What is some the inspiration behind your garb?
Flaunting the expected dress for women of the period - aside from the bodice, every other piece of clothing is men’s clothing. When most females who went to sea hid their sex, Emerald openly flaunts her sex and the fact she lives by her own rules.
Q
Does your pirate prosoma have a back story?
Actually yes, Emerald Shaunassey was born on the deck of the family ship, The Salty Kiss, as it was coming back into home port of Shannon, Ireland though her mother lived only long enough to name her. Emerald spent her life aboard ship with her father and learned his ways of honest merchant by day, not-so-honest pirate by night; specializing in smuggling Catholic priests and lay persons into-andout of countries to avoid persecution in a growing Protestant world. Emerald being wise and having more than a gift for dramatic flair soon learned how to sweet talk her way into patents of Privateering with the various Royals of the known world. The rest, as they say, is history and she has sent spent her days doing what she feels is right and true to herself, her faith, and her fellow woman ... she hires only women to sail her ship and has absolutely no faith in the men around her.
Q
Do you watch Starz’s original series and if so how do you think of the story so far, also what do you look forward to the 3rd season?
I have seen only one or two episodes of Black Sails but have found them entertaining diversions.
Q
What do you like the most about going to the events and what is one of your favorite so far?
I love seeing and meeting new people and educating them on the long and storied history of female pirates and privateers prior to the Golden Age of Piracy as this is part of history that isn’t often covered. I don’t know that I could choose just one event as an all time favorite; I have enjoyed all of them but, performing on stage at the Ingleside (Tx) Renaissance Festival, at the Pirate Festival in Memphis, Tn (where my entry photo was taken on Mud Island with the Mississippi in the background), and being allowed to Honor our Veterans each year on Memorial Day at the Renaissance Faire of the Midlands (Council Bluffs, Iowa) then Midwest Renaissance Faire (Omaha, Nb) have been some of the most memorable, simply for their location and the “flavor” of the event.
Q
Outside of going to events, are there days that you just Garb up and go out on the town. If so what type of place do you happen to go and do?
A: I have done movie promotions with my crew for “Master & Commander”, the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies. I have also worn my garb to work to entertain my patients and fellow staff members ... there is nothing like doing CPR in full kit.
Q
What might be your “day job”
I am a Registered Nurse
Q
Is there anything you would like to share with our readers?
Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams, let your inner child out, and always be creative and true to yourself. The sky is the limit when you give yourself permission to be who and what you truly wish to be.
Mark your Calandars, and get ready for the Event season to kick off for 2016. As the year goes on, we shall add more events and update any dates that may change.
