n albatross fallowing your ship was a good omen because it was believed that they could lead ships to safety. Sailors also beleaved that the albatross carried the souls of the dead sailors, and for this reason they were held in very high regard. It was considered extremely bad luck to kill an albatross and doing so would bring misfortune to a ship and its crew. ... Albatrosses, of the biological family Diomedeidae, are large seabirds related to the procellariids, storm petrels and diving petrels in the order Procellariiformes. They range widely in the Southern Ocean and the North Pacific. Also know as a Seagual.

Captain Jameson von Greywolfe’s Rum Review - Papa’s Pilar Most everyone has heard the name Ernest Hemingway, also known as Papa, whether they know who he was or what he did. An American novelist, short story writer, and journalist his life carried meaning to those around him, he was an adventurer and held a strong influence in 20th century fiction. He loved the drink especially rum and if it was his choice he preferred a good mojito over anything else. The Pilar was a boat customized and commissioned by Hemingway. A 38 foot fishing boat and named after his

nickname for his wife Pauline. Tonight’s pick of Papa’s Pilar 24 Dark Rum is an 86 proof sweet rum that is aged in the solera method from pot, and column stilled rums that originated in the Caribbean, South America, and Florida. The fermentation takes place in tanks that are temperature controlled. Double aged in used whiskey and port wine casks then finished in Spanish Sherry casks. The fruit taste should be excellent. The 24 represents the oldest age of rum from the blend with rums from a few years up to 24.

A dark rum it is, with its deep amber and brown base and golden orange highlights. A thin sheen coats the inside of the snifter holding the legs for a long time. Once let go they fall very slow despite the thickness of the legs. Gravity is no concern with Papa’s Pilar 24. The sweet raisin, vanilla, and caramel start the aroma ship on its way finishing with other dried unknown fruits that rise from the glass. The first thing tasted is sweet coffee almost Columbian or tropical south island’s in taste. The website says that I should be tasting Italian roasted coffee beans but I know Columbian coffee, and that’s what I taste. With the Columbian coffee, vanilla and tropical fruit lay the foundation of taste Almonds, Apricot and fire roasted coconut make up the background. The rum itself is a bittersweet going back n forth from sweet coffee to semisweet chocolate. So from the dark mojito to a rum Old Fashioned there’s a variety of choices from the classic cocktails you could choose from. Neat or chilled works just as well, but my choice tonight is my golden ginger ale and ice. My rum that was purchased online hadn’t come yet and probably due to the snow and in climate weather so I’ll have to find another one tomorrow but fear not Jax has plenty I’ve not had yet. So my pirate brethren, friends, and rum enthusiasts stay safe, stay alert, stay alive, and drink responsibly. Another review will come on the morrow. Till then, down me hatch.

Q

How long have you been into the pirate life and what made you want to be a pirate?

Gurdybird Tamsyn Swingler

Interviewed by: Timber Gray Wolf

I think I first dabbled in a more certain style in 2012, I play the hurdy gurdy and feel more comfortable playing in costume, and as I live practically in Penzance, it almost seems that every Cornish person has some form of pirate themed outfit in the wardrobe. I started to acquire a more character based wardrobe since then, which I believe was Pirate Day in Causewayhead. By the world record attempt in 2014, I had a more definite style, and armed with the gurdy was adopted by the steampunk movement and encouraged to go on stage by a number of friends, which took two years of persuasion! Most of my music has a nautical edge to it, and I really like the roguery of characters, the grubbiness and bawdy tunes associated with the time.

Q

What is some the inspiration behind your garb?

As GurdyBird seems to be from another dimension or a version of the Georgian era that wasn’t quite as it was in actuality, my hair/wig is more cybergoth in appearance, and the Tyburn Gallows in the “Defiant ‘til Tyburn” music video has 2 moons. This mainly came from my compositions and arrangements of traditional tunes, which combine the hurdy gurdy, zither, virtual dulcimer alongside drum machines, synthesizers, unexpected genres and all inclusive celebration of alter ego videos. My leather look trousers seem to have a following, and there’s questions when if I’m not wearing them, but there’s a mix of steam/Georgian punk in there, in some of the corsets and boots. I tend to collect things for my hat if I have enjoyed playing at certain events and want to remember them, I have a number of good luck charms on there too from friends, and a few shiny things I picked up like the magpie I am. As a proud Cornish maid, I have a chough mask on the front of my hat, which started as a small bird in my hat but got a bit damaged over the years, and a Cornish tartan sash hardly ever leave my gurdy maintenance sporran and pouch. I will be keeping my black rimmed glasses as part of it though, I know it’s not in keeping, I’ve been told this even in the sci-fi world of some folks perceptions, but I really need them to play, and they seem to be something I’m actually recognised by. I really like the clash of them and also it really works for Adam Ant, whom I admire. My jacket was originally made for wearing at a festival I now help run, called Montol in Penzance. We have various guise guilds of different themes, so I started in the Glorious Company of the Egyptian House. As Lord Nelson’s death was first reported back to England via Penzance, and his death mask hangs in the Union, I decided I would have a naval style jacket with Egyptian motifs. I make my jackets, and really love a good epaulette and enjoy making those, and I chose the look as I was inspired by The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band as a child along with Adam Ant. My leather look trousers seem to have a following, and there’s questions if I am wearing something else instead

Q

Does your pirate prosoma have a back story?

Whilst GurdyBird never started out explicitly as a pirate, she kinda dressed like one, or rather, the more fantasy version of a pirate. She appears to be from some sort of parallel dimension, and I recently discovered that she would probably qualify as a genre called GeorgianPunk. She regularly escapes hanging, and sometimes goes into worlds like the chap books where the World is turned upside down. But her main habitat are the taverns, although she is no stranger to recruiting souls into her “Rave-y Navy”.

Q

What do you like the most about going to the events and what is one of your favorite so far?

What I really like is seeing all the brilliant characters especially the more original ones, that have their own story, and interact with you in character with great humour. As for favourite events, that’s really a tough one, I have a number I visit that are more steampunk and some which are more Pirate in theme. As we are talking Pirate, Brixham Pirate Festival has always been incredible fun, and my other half films a lot of it, I provide the score and you can see the fun on YouTube. I enjoy roaming and playing in the streets, on the Golden Hind, on the stage, and have made lots of friends via it. The location is fantastic, the weather is usually glorious, the organisers are brilliant, there is a HUGE amount of music played here and it brings a hoard of highly costumed buccaneers into the town but currently it is suffering severe lack of funding, as events of this size and quality are expensive to put on and all help is greatly appreciated. If any readers feel they could offer support, their page is here http:// brixhampirates.com/help/ they are a non-profit organisation.

Q

Outside of going to events, are there days that you just Garb up and go out on the town. If so what type of place do you happen to go and do?

do for filming the videos, not many really bat an eye at this, Penzance is a place where interestingly attired people more often than not can go from one end to the other without any comments or glances. I sometimes go busking for funds for Montol in garb, and wear some of the garb out in everyday life, sadly not all of it, most of it weighs a terrific amount, but if there’s a picnic or prom walk with a group of friends who are similarly inclined, then there’s no stopping me!

Q

What is your day job outside of pirating?

I am self employed as GurdyBird, I also make prints of my own designs and masks and accessories as Tarraway Hoofpress. I also worked in the kitchen at The Bucket of Blood for years in evenings of the summer months. I also volunteer as Chairman, trustee and Assistant Director at The Cornish Culture Association, which is a charity, researching and preserving some of our traditions which have been lost and revived and providing community workshops, events and projects. I provide illustrations, concepts, music and edit Paul Betowski’s footage and audio captures to make promotional material for the Association, as well as a good dose of admin and behind the scenes of event building, and have MC’d as a different alter ego for it (Plague Physician, Dr. Theobald Ph.D, another associate of Montol from The Splendid League of Physicians.)

Q

From the great list of out there, what is one of your favorite pirate movies or books?

I can totally appreciate that it’s a mainstream thing but I really like Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Man’s Chest and Salazar’s Revenge. I also thought the version of Treasure Island with Eddie Izzard as Long John Silver was fantastic. I tend to read non-fiction and historical accounts and shanty books for obvious reasons.

Q

Is there anything you would like to share with our readers?

If I may shamelessly plug my sites, I have a number of platforms, www.facebook.com/gurdybird www.gurdybird.bandcamp.com I have a pratreon page if anyone would like to actively support the production of my work in return for rewards for different tiers https://www.patreon.com/gurdybird https://twitter.com/tamsyn_swingler https://www.youtube.com/channel/ UCfGte5nNOjBJJqL5SYnRz6w Thanks for reading!

Entry 6 - The Spanish Journal of Bazel Clement Hopwood

For a few days I stayed hidden within the safety of my cabin, only left to collect my food and did my best to avoid Elise. I think was all but at lasted three or four days hidden in the small cramped room, every day it felt smaller and small closing in on me. Enough was enough I had to stretch my legs and get some fresh air. Making my way to the upper deck I slowing peered out checking to see how safe it was. As my head breached the outside world my lungs were filled with the blast of fresh air. The warm sun had awoken me from what felt like a never ending sleep. How long was I really down in the cabin? Walking over to my usual spot to lean I looked over the vast ocean, the sails were full, not a yard of sheet seemed to be spared as the Silver Moon cut through the water. Oddly enough, I laughed to myself, maybe some of these old Runes carved throughout the ship gifted it the ability to sail quicker and be blessed by the heaven and seas. I must have been in that cabin too long to think that. I proceeded to explore the Runes and sigils along the ship, taken notes of some that I did not know. I looked up to see Dueien in the crow’s next with a spy glass looking out over the horizon. Daniel was passing by, getting her attention as I pointed up to Dueien, “looking for pirates, is he”, trying to get some small talk going with her. “Pirates you say? Na, it be the Spanish to look out for” it was not the voice I was expecting, it was Elise. “Before we left Boston there was word of Spanish attacking any ship bond for England”. With a galp, I looked had to look worried, remembering the Spanish made some of the best war ships. “Don’t worry too much Basil, we can handle any them”. Pulsing for a moment “Did you say Basil?” Elise looked over at me “What if I did Basil”. It is Ba-zzzzz-el”. With a smirk as she walked way “Whatever you say Basil”. I was both upset and confessed, was this her way of being mean or trying to be nice from what happen the other day. Either way I way happy the conversion did not end with the end of a knife again. The thought of the Spanish stayed in my head for days. I was a little worried, what was the chance of crossing a Spanish ship. This idea rattled around inside my head for some time.

Firsy entry: April Issue 26

Some days had passed as I fallowed more the runes throughout the haul of the ship, even some of the cannons below had engravings. As I wondered, I lost my footing and bumping into crate. Leaning up I felt a soft cloth under my hand. It had the texture of a flag. In the dim light, the flag seemed to be black with a white image on it. Must have been an item they are delivering for someone. I looked around to see if there was anyone else near. Thinking there would be no harm to take a look, pulling the flag out of its hiding place and held it up. Every through excepted from my mind as I stared into the skull upon the flag. It was a pirate flag, which could mean only one thing. The crew, the captain and the ship itself was pirate. How in the world did I find myself among all possible ships to be on was a pirate ship?! Hearing footsteps, I quickly stuff the flag back into its hidey hole, then quickly hiding around the corner acting to be nose deep into my journal. The footsteps stopped at the hidey hole, then they when running the way they come from. Slowing making my way outside to clear my mind, I hear “Spanish Galleon off the Starboard Bow” yelled out from the crow’s nest. A hand landed on my shoulder, “You better be get back down to yer cabin Bazel” the voice of the captain was calm but with a strict tone as he looked out to the oncoming ship. “Should we hoist the colours Captain?” a voice I s rung out as crewmember ran up with the flag. Looking over at them, “Not yet, let us get right next to them then drop the smoke” Captain Wolf replied. I stood there, he did not care that I just found out he was already planning on how to battle the Galleon. With a glare he shot me, I know I over stayed my welcome on deck as warning shot rang out from the oncoming ship. I acted as I was going back to my cabin but I wanted to witness how this was going to play out. What I was to witness next made no sense to me. As the captain walked towards the center mast he took off his boots, stockings, and shirt. Was he really going to fight wearing nothing but his trousers? Holding on to a hook at the end of a rope then giving it a hard yank, he was lifted quickly up the mast. The Silver Moon got closer and closer to the Galleon, the crew started lighting fuses and tossing what looking like clay pots on to the deck of the Galleon. The upper deck was filled with smoke. I then looked up to see the captain running along the top crosstree and jumping into the smoke that was now half way up the Galleon’s main mast. He was carrying no weapons, what was he planning.

The sound of gun fire and screams come from the other ship, this lasted for a few minute while the Silver Moon’s crew stood in wait. A sound of a roar fallowed with a howl set me into a flash back, of the captain’s hunting stop on the island. A shape immerged from the smoke and landed on the deck. Peeking out all I saw were large feet of a wolf walking across the deck slowing turning in the feet of a man, I look out to see it was the captain turning back from a wolf to a man. Walking towards the captain quarters, Daniel hands him his cloths, he returned the guested with a kiss on her cheek and appeared to wisher something to her. Slowly stepping up out of my hiding spot as Daniel walked over to me “He is a werewolf?” I shuttered. She looked at me and smiled “Actually he is a Faoladh, but an easy mistake; also he would like to see you in his Quarters. I looked onward to what might come, meanwhile as the crew went aboard the galleon.
