Captain Flint’s Ship, The Walrus, Was built on Set
Before Captain Flint could strut aboard, the production crew was hard at work building his ship, The Walrus. The beautiful ship took nearly five months three hundred carpenters to be brought to life.
2
Jack Rack was the first to use the Jolly Roger
You might remember Jack Rackham’s obsession with getting the flag on his ship just right. This was based in reality, actually, and he was the first pirate ever to have the skull and crossbones flag on his ship.
3
Zach McGowan is the only Americans on Set (Charles Vane)
Originally they only wanted to cast Brits, but his agent happened to know some of the producers. Lucky for him!

Q
How long have you been into the pirate life and what made you want to be a pirate?
I have been a Pirate since 1995, living on the edge of Hell all these years. It is only recently that I have been living the life of a Pirate!
Lord High Admiral Fetherz Interviewed by: Timber Gray Wolf
Q
Does your pirate prosoma have a back story?
My good friend Bryda of Pirates & Paradise invited me to a life changing adventure on the annual Pirates & Paradise trip to the Caribbean; in 2016 we went to Long Bay, Antigua. That is when I invited My Captain to come along on this adventure with me. He helped bring out my persona as I believe I have brought out his.
Q
What do you like the most about going to the events and what is one of your favorite so far?
While I do enjoy Renaissance festival, my favorite adventures are in the Caribbean. Although each event has its character, the time in Antigua was when I dusted off an old hidden Captain. As we took on an erotic tropical Pirate Excursion organized by Pirates & Paradise. I enjoy interacting with people both in character and out of character.
Q
What is some the inspiration behind your garb?
I get inspiration for my garb as I shop through all the stores at the different Renaissance stores.I also get a lot of input from my Captain Loki Rowsmoor. He bought me my first period hat to get started and I have been growing my trunk of garb ever since! We especially like all the leather and feathers.
Q
Outside of going to events, are there days that you just Garb up and go out on the town. If so what type of place do you happen to go and do?
We may walk the deck at times to “get a breath of air” as the Captain says. There has been a call to garb from the Captain’s cabin but I nar not tell ya who be doing the calling! Besides being L.H. Admiral, what happens in the Captain’s cabin stays in the Captain’s cabin.
Q
From the great list of out there, what is one of your favorite pirate movies or books?
My choices of movie favorites are, of course, the Pirates of the Caribbean series. It was always exciting to go to the movies with the family to go out and watch them
Q
Is there anything you would like to share with our readers?
I am looking forward to my next trip with Pirates & Paradise in St Lucia and hope to recruit more crew members to join us! The trip is scheduled for April 14 to the 21st of 2018 when we go to an all-inclusive resort in St. Lucia! Want to get on board with us?!
Pirates lived hard and played hard, conscious that the noose— or worse— would kill them long before old age. As much as we love to glorify piracy today, the reality was grim. These were dangerous men, and women, who clutched desperately at life as long as they might. Most of the romance of piracy has been fabricated, stitched up like sailcloth, by our imaginations. In pirate literature, an author must make a clean sweep of the ship, so to speak, in order to present likeable characters. Romantic scenes and scenery are a must. Never mind that toothpaste and deodorant were nonexistent aboard ship; cast off thoughts of the torture and murder involved in the job. It’s my job to craft a story that floats, and which scuttles the boatloads of filth involved in buccaneer life. I’m aware that pirate companies weren’t run like the Royal Navy, but, for my purposes in writing the Hook & Jill Saga, a degree of regimentation works. And few pirates began life as aristocrats. Captain Hook is fictional, so I feel free to unfurl him the way that J.M. Barrie— with tongue in cheek— created him in Peter Pan: an educated, cultured, if callous, commander. Hook is heroic in his villainous way, and he runs a taut ship because it succeeds. Pirate companies didn’t last many years, or even many months, but here’s Hook in the Hook & Jill Saga, cutting out a reputation and sailing on with the same loyal crew, year after year. And that’s all
a-tanto, because it’s fiction, it’s fun, and it allows for one hell of a story And then there’s Red-Handed Jill. She’s a lady. She dresses in gowns and arches her eyebrows. She began her career as a mother, and I’ve heard the observation that I’m keeping her “soft.” Will she ever wish to act in cold blood? She does her duty, she is sometimes hard, yet Jill rules with her own armory of weapons— her wit, her charm, her intelligence, her sex, and her storytelling. “Men’s” weapons may be wielded by Jill, but this lady is more subtle than the sword— and, therefore, more dangerous. I salute others’ opinions on my books. Everyone ships his own insights, and the different interpretations are, to me, part of the adventure. One subject my readers and I discuss begs to be studied: Jill’s sexuality. As I mentioned, a pirate storyteller has to clean up the scene, and yet any tale of piracy, to be true to its subject, must still stress its amoral aspects. Pirates represent freedom— from authority, from social obligation, and from conventional mores. RedHanded Jill is no exception, and, on occasion, readers remark on Jill’s liberty in the bedchamber. My pirate queen, while applauded for her independence, may raise eyebrows (this time, not her own). For harboring more than one lover, Jill receives soubriquets more suited to the Victorian Age than the 21st Century. But belay there…As much as we love it when buccaneers
break the rules, and as often as we indulge in fantasies of “wenches” in (or half out of) impractical, provocative garb, pirate literature appears not to have bridged the outdated divide between what’s acceptable for men, and what’s acceptable for women. I say, Fire all! and blast that attitude out of the water. As Jack Sparrow explains in one forceful word when Will Turner expresses shock at his behavior…“Pirate!” Hold fast, mates, because Jill’s a pirate too. If she can fight like a man, she can sleep like one. To my knowledge, no enquirer has flogged the males in these tales for sleeping around. Jill’s masculine counterparts dodge more commentary-cannonballs for one slap to her face than for their sexual successes. Is a “doubloon” standard at work here? And let’s not even talk about marriage. I’ll let Jill talk about it. She sums it up in Other Oceans: “Marriage is simply an act of law. What use has any pirate for any law?” So she can tie the knot or not, and as often as she likes. Does Hook give a damn if she does? “True marriage,” Hook reflects, takes place “in the woods in sacraments like this one, or upon the font of the sea, in rites of passage, blood ritual, magical transference such as only he, who inhabited her soul, could share with her.” And now you’ve had a wee peep at Other Islands: Book Three of the Hook & Jill Saga— sez I, with an arch of my eyebrows and a sly, quiet smile. It’ll sail your way soon.
Live hard, play hard. A pirate’s life for me. And after a year of foul-weather politics, maybe not the noose, but the news, awaits us!

Q
How long have you been in to Steampunk and what got you into it?
About 3-4 years ago. I actually never even heard of the term steampunk before then. I seem to have independently grew to like the industrial look etc especially in the garb before knowing there was such a cult following
Q
What inspired you to take the character Captain Jack Sparrow and bring him into the steampunk world?
Interviewed by: Timber Gray Wolf
I do many events for free around Cape Cod and the surrounding areas. I have done many fundraisers for kids with cancer, breast cancer awareness etc and occasionally Ren Faires. There is a large steampunk event here in N. Massachusetts that looked like fun so I decided to participate and set about thinking of an appropriate kit to wear. The idea of Steampunk Jack popped into my head and since much of the costuming was already done, all I had to do was sew and create some new parts and VOILA!
Q
From the great list of out there, what is one of your favorite Steampunk movies or books?
I may mention this movie a few times today But before I even heard of the term steampunk, I watched and LOVED the movie Edward Scissorhands with his steampunk like garb and Vincent Price’s Industrial Laboratory. That sparked my interest in steampunk even though it would be YEARS before I knew there were folks dedicated to the style
Q
What is one of your favorite things about being a steampunk?
A couple things really. Firstly, it gives one a GREAT opportunity to show one’s creativity and WHIMSY. Luckily, it also allows you to manifest this is your garb and kit in general
Q
What is your theory on the steampunk universe, as what caused the world to stop at steam-power?
I believe its a simpler time where people were incredibly creative and inventive but still depended on one another to flourish. Post Industrial age, we began to drift away from social inter-dependence and into self reliance, jealousy and self aggrandizement and such began the resistance
Q
What is one of your favorite parts of going to events?
Again, 2 parts really. First, it gives one a chance to forget about the harsh realities of life, even if for but 1 day. Secondly, I LOVE being asked to pose for photographs. When I was 8 yrs old, I was told I was a type 1 insulin dependent diabetic. I was told I could never be in the military and probably was not qualified to do many things because of my condition. In response, I became involved in the commercial fishing industry in Alaska for some 25 years....I think mostly just to prove I could do it lol....the most dangerous job out there. So needless to say, the affliction came with some self confidence and self image problems. So in a way, having someone ask me to take a picture with them fulfills a need I have to prove I have some value, as weird as that may seem. One of the BEST compliments one can get, in my opinion, is to have a stranger appreciate your work so much, they ask to have a pic taken with them. To me, its a very personal experience and I see people act like they are inconveniencing me asking for a pic, in reality its a great honor for me to be asked and helps fill a niche that i will always need to fill. Creating something that gives kids and adults alike that “WOW! look is priceless.
