Building your Wardrobe

By: Timber Gray Wolf

For those that are just starting it is easy to think that you will need just one outfit for all events and all year round. But as the year or years go by you will find new items or even developing your character. Outside of character building there is simply the outside weather. Then accession, are you going to battle, or to The Ball

Pending on where you live the climate can change throughout the year or stay the same. Even comes down to if there are outdoor events all year round. Other things to keep in mind are the weather itself, as many of events are rain or shine, the show must go on. These are great things to keep in mind when building your wardrobe.

Going along with last month’s article covering building one’s persona, your outfit will help portray that. Yes we know the phase “the garb don’t make the pirate, the pirate makes the garb”. In itself it is very true, but to an existent. Your garb helps portray where your character is from; are you from England or one of their colonies, Spain, Ireland, or more tribal, ext. With this in mind it is easier to look for future clothes to add to your wardrobe.

Even if you might have that single piece or even outfit, that gets wore once in a while due to cold temperatures, you will be happy you have it. The most common thing if not that one heavy cloak/cape or coat, is layering. When it comes down to it, long johns and other forms of under wears are a life saver for colder temps.

Progression of Outfit

When possible rainy weather is in the forecast, all that may be needed is a light coat or water resistant cape. These items are great if you still want to stay dry

while not having to dive to one vender booth to another to stay dry.

outfit with a corset, vests, coats, nothing at all.

Warm weather outfit can vary just as much. Pending on one’s gender or persona’s job, the layers can vary. The warmer it gets think about clothes that are light or breathe well, to prevent overheating.

Outside of just clothing there are a lot of different ways to just change how an outfit might layout or look by adding accessories or weapons. This also comes down to your persona and what type of job or person they are. Then there is if you have more than one persona, by adding different items can change the outfit by a lot.

There are some events that are come as you are. Then others you might just have to get a little more dressed up for. This one might not be for everyone, but having that one outfit that stands out from the others is always nice. This outfit gives something for others to go “Wow” to. As you are reading this you are thinking “how many different outfits am I going to have to get?” When it comes down to it you might only have your core outfit, the one you would wear all the time. How that outfit may change is the pieces you add or take away by layering. Just speaking from experience, females will grow a wide chose for their wardrobe compared to males. Also other things to keep in mind an outfit can be switched up by mismatching different tops and bottoms. There is also the factor of pairing the

Something to keep in mind that some do every day and don’t think much about is hair and makeup. Pending on event outfit, but doing this final little touches can really pull it together. Before you think makeup as lipstick, eyeliner, nail polish; think about movie effect makeup. Adding scars for an example or even color contacts, wigs to fake facial hair. These items can help turn you into an all new character or to the one you are aiming for. Slowly your wardrobe will grow to take on an area of its own. If you share your space with a fellow goer as I do, it will grow faster. Soon there is just a spot for all the garb separate from your everyday clothing. My only other word of advice is to shop around and find what is best for you and also price, because things get expensive after a while too.

Q

How is it being a Pirate in Texas and how did your hear about the Great Lakes Pirate magazine?

I enjoy it very much. I don’t live very far from Galveston, which used to be a pirate port and Campeche colony, the home of Jean Lafitte, so we have a decent bit of history to work with. I could live without the summer humidity, but other than that, it’s great! Captain of La Llorona Interviewed by: Timber Gray Wolf

I heard about the Magazine from a post shared on the World Wide Pirate Community group on Facebook.

Q

How long have you been into the pirate life and what made you want to be a pirate?

I immersed into pirate history roughly five years ago when I was invited to join a crew with some friends. However, those plans fell through so I started a crew of “I started with pirates because that’s what I knew and the garb was relatively easy and affordable to put together, but the history is what really kept me going.

Q

Does your pirate prosoma have a back story?

The backstory of Captain Macedoña de Castillo is still a work in progress; For now she just sails the sea looking for adventure on her ship, La Llorona. She has gathered an interesting crew in her adventures! She herself is from a small seaside town in Spain. The Quarter Master is from Dublin, Ireland and another of the crew is French. She even had a Dane at one point, though that one got keelhauled. All of the characters in her story and many of the events are based on my crew members and our own outings and adventures.

Q

What is some the inspiration behind your garb?

Macedoña is originally from Spain, so most of my garb has a bit of a Spanish undertone to it.

Q

From the great list of out there, what is one of your favorite pirate movies or books?

Oof, that’s a tough one. As far as fiction goes, Rafael Sabatini did an absolutely amazing job with “Captain Blood”. I’ve read it several times and it never gets old. For non fiction, it would be “Seafaring Women” and “Under the Black Flag” both by David Cordingly.

Q

Outside of going to events, are there days that you just Garb up and go out on the town. If so what type of place do you happen to go and do?

Outside from our La Llorona monthly meets, every once in a while I’ll grab a group of friends together and we’ll go out to the mall or the book store or out for a photo shoot. It just depends on our moods. P.S. People watching as pirates is a load of fun!

Q

Is there anything you would like to share with our readers?

No matter what, always be who you want to be, not who the world wants you to be. And always remember: Well behaved women rarely make history! wink emoticon

Q

What do you like the most about going to the events and what is one of your favorite so far?

To be honest, I love getting stopped for pictures. Also, when kids are like “*Gasp!* Are you a REAL pirate?!” I enjoy getting younger people interested in history and learning. If they take the time to stop and learn, my crew will tell them stories. My favorite events would be the monthly outings with my crew. We go out to different places, mostly museums, on the first Sunday of every month. Also, the Texas Renaissance Festival is truly where I got my first glimpse into this life. I guess you could say it’s Macedoña’s home.

In the mood for some good rock music on your way to an event and want to get the mood or just laying around and tired of the same old shanties. Well here is a band to list to, Alestorm the heavy met pirates. The band originates from Perth, Scotland and formed in 2004 under the name Battleheart. After releasing two demos the band was signed by Napalm Records in 2007, where they renamed themselves Alestorm. The name change was as the name did not quite fit them anymore, as well to help prevent confusion as Napalm had signed a band by the name of Battlelore. In 2008 they released their first album under Napalm, Revenge of Captain Morgan.

was Harper’s replacement, but after a brief period of touring, was fired from the band. To fill the guitarist position, Dani Evans switched instruments from bass to guitar, and Gareth Murdock of Waylander joined as the replacement bassist. In March 2010, Ian Wilson left the band and was replaced with a new drummer named Peter Alcorn. Alestorm’s third album, Back Through Time, is Alcorn’s first appearance on an Alestorm album. In October 2011, Elliot Vernon of the band Windrider joined the band’s live performances as keyboard player; he has since joined Alestorm as a full-time member.

As any band goes so do some of the members, in September 2008, guitarist Gavin Harper had left the band. Tim Shaw
