Back on February 3rd the event took place in Mount Clemens, Michigan, at the Gibraltar Trade Center. Star~Dust and I set sail early enough so the traffic would not be that bad, while traveling through Detroit. The event shared the building with an indoor market that ran every weekend. For an indoor event they had plenty of square footage to fill up. We took our time walking around the event. The vendor section seemed a little thin, but the event made up in performances. There was a great range of shows to pick from. One of our favorite shows was watching Pictus, a Scottish
band. The 3 of them put so much energy into their music it is fun to watch and listen to. We bought one of their CDs, note: when listing to while driving, be sure to have cruse turned on. At this event we saw didn’t see as many familiar faces as we went to the family session in the first half of the day, but heard many other went to the latter session. I heard that the event had a huge number on their turn out for it being a first time event. My thoughts on that besides have a large window of time for guest to come to the event, it was location. As mentioned that the event was sharing a building with a fairly large indoor market. People were peeking through to see what happing on the other side of the wall. So many of them would go head and pay the $12 to go into the event. I am not down playing the awesomeness for this. As this meant that many of the performers had a better
chance to make money. As the saying goes “Location, Location, Location. The only bad thing we have to say about the event was the bad timing for the shows. There were times some of the shows would be going at the same time next to each other or just too close. Then once the Joisting started, it pulled people from all the other shows, leaving performers to entertain set of empty chairs. We will indeed look into going to the event again next year. Like any new event there is a learning curve and we can not wait to see where it goes from here.

Q
What is your reaction to the high votes and the neck to neck race between you and Nathan Keelhauler.
Interviewed by: Timber Gray Wolf
Q
The ship behind you in the entry photo, is that the crew’s ship or one you posed in front of at an event?
That picture was taken at Gasparilla in Tampa this year. I have a dear friend who is in the Anna Maria Island Privateers and that is their parade float, The Skullywag. The Privateers sponsor and organize various activities throughout the year including the Anna Maria Island 4th of July parade, Christmas Parade (complete with gifts for the children and Santa) and “Snooks” Adams Kids Day with hot dogs, soda and games. Over the last 25 years, they have awarded over $270,000 in scholarships for Manatee County students furthering their education in whatever field they choose and is a 100% volunteer organization. And yes, I did get to ride the float in the parade. Lol.
Oh, that was stressful. Lol. I remember one day sending a message to my friend saying, “Oh no, we’re tied!!!” He laughed and said it’d be fine. I started posting and tagging everyone I know. I posted it in groups I’m in, I had friends sharing it. It really warmed my heart to scroll through and see so many people, many that I know and love and others I haven’t talked to in awhile, all helping me to reach this goal and win. Looking at the results of the voting, it’s really exciting to see the number of people that voted for us. To him I want to say, well done, Keelhauler. Good race, sir. I’d shake your hand if I could. Lol.
Q
How long have you been into the pirate life and what made you want to be a pirate?
Let’s see… It was 11 years in February, actually. I was always really interested and drawn to the Renaissance type stuff. As a child, I always enjoyed playing with fake swords and pretending to be a rebellious princess who wanted to be a knight and save herself from the ideals of her overbearing mother who just wanted her to be a lady. My favorite books were always this type of story, and in my teen years I read A LOT of books. In my early 20s I met a man whom I ended up dating and he loved Pirates. He took me to my first Ren Faire and we went as pirates. Because of this I started doing some research on pirates (because I’m a bit OCD and I like knowing about things I plan on representing) and ran across this weird, made-up holiday called International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Imagine my surprise when I realized it fell on MY BIRTHDAY!!! Well, after that I was hooked. EVERYTHING was piraty. The house was piraty, our cat was named Jack, we each had a pirate name. I’m no longer with that man (and haven’t been for at least 9 years), but I am grateful that he introduced me to the world of Piracy. I’ve been enjoying the Pirate Life for 11 years now and I look forward to a lifetime. A PIRATE’S LIFE FOR ME!!!
Q
Does your pirate prosoma have a back story?
Actually, yes, and I’m writing a book about her. Scarlett was an Irish pirate who ran away from home to avoid an undesirable marriage. In the midst of her adventures she ended up becoming a pirate. However, if anyone has ever seen my videos, you’ll hear me having an English accent rather than the Irish brogue. That’s because she knew her parents would likely be searching for her and didn’t want people to know her true origin and try to take her back home to Ireland, so she disguised her accent. If you want to know more about Scarlett Dearheart’s backstory, you’ll just have to wait for the book. *winks*
Q
What is some the inspiration behind your garb?
I like red, hearts and roses. My name is Scarlett, my krewe name is Krewe of the Crimson Thorn, so anything I wear has to have a lot of red and I accent it with roses. I even made myself a beautiful set of Skirt Hikes with roses on them.
Q
What do you like the most about going to the events and what is one of your favorite so far?
I love the clothes! Lol! Okay, not just that. I’ve been told I have an old soul, and I’ve always loved anything that’s… Old. Not like, this century old, but really old. I love looking at the careening camps the historical krewes set up, I love the music, I love looking at the outfits and seeing how everyone put their garb together. I love the people and the energy and seeing everyone have such a good time. My favorite event is the Cedar Key Pirate Invasion Weekend in Cedar Key, FL. The first year I attended the event happened to fall exactly on my birthday, so I went with my best friend/quartermaster, Becs, camped out there for the weekend and had such a blast. I take my krewe up there every year now.
Q
Outside of going to events, are there days that you just Garb up and go out on the town. If so what type of place do you happen to go and do?
I always look kind of piratey. I wear skirts and my boots every day, I always have beads in my hair; but, as much as I want to, I have yet to go “out on the town” in garb. I have, however, worn my garb to a Christmas party and New Year’s Eve. Lol. That was so fun!
Q
From the great list of out there, what is one of your favorite pirate movies or books?
My favorite pirate book is “The Pirate Queen” by Alan Gold. It’s about Grace O’Malley, who happens to be my favorite pirate. Grace O’Malley had a dozen ships and thousands of men at her command. Her empire stretched from Connaught on the Irish coast down Africa. Grace nearly bankrupted the English treasury and and caused Elizabeth I a lot of distress. The two women actually met once! It frustrates me when people start naming famous, female pirates and they list Anne Bonny and Mary Read, but never Grace O’Malley. She was a little bit before the Golden Age of Piracy, but she still made a huge impact on piracy for women.
Q
Is there anything you would like to share with our readers?
I just want to say thank you again to everyone who voted for me and shared my photo. I appreciate your support. I want to thank my friends at AMI Privateers for the chance to take the winning photo in front of their ship, and a special thanks to my friend William the Heartless who invited me to hang out with his krewe to begin with. I also want to give an extra special thanks to my own krewe, Krewe of the Crimson Thorn, because without them, I wouldn’t be who I am… Captain Scarlett Dearheart Lastly, always be yourself. Unless you can be a pirate. Then always be a pirate. Unless you are a pirate. Then always be yourself
We the Crew of the Silver Moon also know for the Silver Moon Imports. Our group enjoys a good sword fight and sharing that fun for your enjoyment. Take a look and fallow us on Facebook. Then if you see us at events feel free to come take a photo with us.

Q
How long have you been in to Steampunk and what got you into it?
Just since the This Winter, having attended a ball whose theme wad SteamPunk. I love the diversity.
Interviewed by: Timber Gray Wolf
Q
What inspired your garb?
Having always loved the “period” this costume-style was an slide. I’m passionate about this “age” with a fun twist of fantasy.
Q
What is one of your favorite things about being a steampunk?
fun, crazy stories, costumes and the positive outlook of the times!
Q
From the great list of out there, what is one of your favorite Steampunk movies or books?
1) Hugo 2) League of extraordinary gentleman 3) Sky captain
Q
Does your pirate prosoma have a back story?
As above, this style is inspired by the period I so love. My home was built in the same period this style represents and I love everything about it and the drive of the age. Many of our advancements of our generation came from the era of steam!
Q
What is one of your favorite parts of going to events?
Costumes and the crazy variation!
Q
What is your theory on the steampunk universe, as what caused the world to stop at steam-power?
War, a great loss of inspiration - we lost our steam and got too cozy and complacent.
This was our 3rd year attending and vending at Shiver Me Timbers in Fowlerville, Michigan. This year the event was a week year compared to past events. I am not sure if the date change had anything to do with it, but the crowd during the Market seemed thinner. Over all was still a good day. Star~Dust, Elise W’nstrom, and I set off early from Sturgis, Michgan. While enjoying some good music while I was driving, the girls passed out for a while as we crossed the state upon Route 69. After making into Fowlerville and the location of Woodshire Place Banquet Facility, we checked in.

Something we did like about the layout of the event this year is the pre-set up tables and name cards for location. So rather than trying to figure out your area and where to set up at, the spot was set and ready. Set up went fast with three of us tossing things about. The thing we liked about our spot was, that it was agents the wall close to an outlet; as I made my Cheese soup in a slow cooker to have as our lunch. While I was checking into our hotel room, Anais W’nstrom and Dueien D’mont arrived to location with more stock. Something else that was new that I enjoyed, they were selling plastic mugs with their logo on
For those that haven’t been to the event, there is a Silent Auction. This year, any of my crew that placed a bid on something won, including me.
it. The mug was all but $20, for what it was, it was not a bad price. The bonus of the mug was unlimited refills. Which I got my money’s worth in Angry Orchard As the event took off, it took of slow. Many of those walking around and shopping were fellow vendors, or crew members of those vending. Even with what felt like a slow day, gave us a chance to talk with a lot of the other vendors and fellow pirates. Thanks to Anais and Dueien for getting the crew a card reader, we were able to make some large sales at the tail end of the market.
After the tear down and clean up, we all left for the hotel to clean up and change into our dress outfits. Some in which we won through the Silent Auction. Arriving back at the event for the evening party we found a comfy place to sit, close enough to the dance floor, yet far enough away that we could talk and hear each other over the music.
After a few dances and the long day catching up with us it was time to leave. With some being second shifters, that had to wake up about 5 hours early to travel and get there for set up and one coming down with illness (sick for about 2 weeks after event).
