Dreamt by: Melolly This is a world where pirates are common, but still look like the old stereotypical pirates. About once a month, there we meet, and this is where all pirates went, going to a big conference hall to talk about random stuff and how to gain trust of normal civilians, since they mistrust pirates. In fact, on my way to this meeting, I observed people pointing at me, the look of disgust showing on their faces. We were trying to show them that not all pirates are bad, we wanted their trust; their understanding. My captain, Timber Gray Wolf, couldn’t make it to this meeting, so here I am in his place, a representative for the Silver Moon crew. Wolf stayed docked on the ship, fixing miscellaneous things, but some serious things that needed attention. Our pirate crew is quite well known amongst all the other crews, crews that add up to hundreds. We’re well known because we work with all crews and make sure peace is kept. If there are any disputes, we’re one of the crews called to site to handle difficult situations. I get to the meeting hall, and there are thousands of pirates, talking amongst each other is heated whispers, as another pirate stood at the front trying to calm people down.
Things such as “we’ll never have the same rights!” were being said. This is our breaking point, we’re tired of fighting for equality. As I entered, a hush trickled through the crowd of pirates, because I am a well known pirate within the Silver Moon crew, for my skills in psychology and talking to other pirates when they need a counselor. I hear many pirates speak about wrong doings done onto them, and it’s difficult for me. I want good things to come to our brethren of pirates. Once silence came from the entire room, I was granted to speak on some ideas. I talk on the importance of building positive relationships, and not to let the negative emotions of others who are against pirates affect us. We’re stronger than that, and we can pull together and come up with something. This is a room full of thousands of pirates. That is a lot of brain power, and I’m sure we can come up with something. The meeting continues for some time as various pirates talk about encounters they’ve had, concerns they have, and advice for where to avoid in order to not get hurt by civilians. After the meeting, I go out and head back to the Silver Moon crew’s ship, and as I do, I spot a family
freaking out in the shallow depths of the water. Upon further investigation, I find out they lost their son, who is about 1-2 years old. I dive in the water and find him, then immediately start rescue breathing and CPR to save his life. The parents were so thankful, and took their son. Once the adrenaline of their worry wore off, they begun to realise that I was a pirate, and hesitated for a moment before asking “don’t pirates kill, not save lives?” To which I motion for them to follow me and go onto the crew’s ship. I let them explore the ship and meet the crew so they realise we aren’t bad people. At that moment, I see a sense of relaxation come over their face, and at this moment, Captain Wolf comes out and started talking about the history of pirates. This was the beginning of an annual event where many pirate ships gather to let people tour their ship. Allowing others to come onto ships and ask pirates questions, closed that gap between us. It took a lot of time though, to gain trust. Skip forward about 10 years, and we’re on our ship, as groups of kids come on to sit in a circle
and Captain Wolf explains how this festival started and started talking about the history of pirates. From there on out, people began to trust pirates and loved learning about our lifestyle out on the waters.

Flags, for centuries, have been used to stake one’s claim and state one’s intent. Nowhere is this more true than with naval travel and trade, where historically flags are often the most distinguishing differences between ships. So we come to the Jolly Roger, which plainly stated that the crew sailing under were pirates. Pirate ships would often have several different flags aboard, all for different roles. They would have British, French, and Spanish flags, to avoid detection. They had plain yellow flags to pose as merchants. The Jolly Roger itself to warn targeted ships and to provide quarter. Lastly there was a plain red flag, used when resistance was met when flying the Jolly Roger. This flag was the battle flag, signifying no mercy would be shown.
The Jolly Roger as we know it has been use since the 1710’s, and was the most commonly used pirate flag in the 1720’s. Though this is the most recognizable pirate flag, several others did exist. Pirate Peter Easton is confirmed to have sailed under a plain black flag as early as 1612, though there are rumors that Francis Drake used a plain black flag as early as 1585. Edward Teach, Charles Vane, and Richard Worley also flew under plain black flags. After 1714 there were many variations of pirate flags on black or red backgrounds, sometimes also flown with ribbons or pendants. Imagery associated with death was very common decoration for these flags, including skulls, skeletons, or hourglasses. It is widely believed that the design of the Jolly Roger evolved from through the Barbary Pirates adopting Muslim sailors’ colors; Muslim corsairs were known to use plain black flags and green flags decorated with a skull as early as 1625. The earliest record of the skull and crossbones being used by pirates was found
(Captain Red hands)
(Krewe of the 82nds Revenge) in a log book entry from December 1687, though the flag was red. Though the Golden Age of Piracy long ago ended, the Jolly Roger has persisted. The skull and crossbones Jolly Roger has been a staple of popular culture since the late 1800’s with the publishing of Treasure Island in 1883. In World War One British submarines, starting with HMS E9 and its commanding officer Max Horton, crafted their own Jolly Rogers to mark the number of enemy ships they sunk or captured. When the HMS E9 ran out of room for more flags, they made one large Jolly Roger with several additional symbols to show their accomplishments. The practice picked up again in World War Two, and spread to Allied ships. While piracy is still a threat on some waters, and those groups have their own flags and symbols to announce their intentions, I believe the traditional Jolly Roger has evolved what it means. Today I see the Jolly Roger used to express a rough and rebellious spirit, by people not afraid to march to the beat of their own drum. It invites you on an adventure, to try new things and meet new people.

Q
How does it feel to win for the month of your birthday?
Merrydeath T Angel Captain of the Fools Gold Pirates
Interviewed by: Timber Gray Wolf
Q
How long have you been into the pirate life and what made you want to be a pirate? I’ve always loved Treasure Island, Captain Blood, and Swashbucklertype movies, especially growing up along the Mississippi. Its hard not to like being on water, when its in your backyard and in your blood. My family has lived by the Old Muddy for almost 100 years. A couple of years ago, I was thrilled to see the Mackinac Bridge. I’m glad I don’t have to battle the waters underneath it. It looks very challenging.
I’m really thrilled to have won, especially for my birthday month. I was born in a snowstorm and it usually snows around this time. Its hard to be thinking about faires and festivals when you have a foot of snow on your doorstep! This makes my birthday so much more special. Thank you, Great Lakes Pirate magazine, and to my friends, mateys, and family who voted for me!
Q
Does your pirate personna have a back story?
Merrydeath Trouble Angel was born on a summer’s night, thanks to Opie Wilson and I, and a bottle of Code rum. She was born the daughter of a pub owner, and grew up listening to the stories of the seas and pirates. As soon as she could, she hired on a ship going to the Caribbean. In a major battle, she saved the life of the Captain, who promoted her to First Mate. After the captain’s death, she took over the ship, renaming it The Fool’s Gold. She and her crew have had many adventures, including sailing on day trips on the University of Connecticut reasearch ship, The Sea Wolf out of Key West, the Windy II in Port Washington WI, and the haunted William Black in Iowa. I’ve shot flintlocks and cannon, and had invasions from Connecticut to Colorado, Minnesota to the Keys. Being a pirate is grand!
Q
What is some the inspiration behind your garb?
A: I’ve always had a Godiva chocolate hat band, my friends’ faire favor pins, and my own Cancer support pins on my hat. Pirates Think Pink was started by me in 2006 when I found out I had breast cancer. A friend from Kansas City Renaissance Faire (KCRF) made up some great pins and the money went to research to help fight cancer. We’ve had to put that on the back burner, but I try to do the Relay for Life every year. I bought my pirate hat in 2002 from the Minnesota Renaissance Faire at Excaliber Leathers. Hello, Kent and Dave! I even won a hat competition at a convention for originality. I got my pirate guild pin (The International Fellowship of Royal Privateers) from Lundegaard Armory in 2002?, who’s motto is: “It was sinking when I got to it”. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being in this group of scallywags. I’m also a member of the International Wenches Guild, so I’m a booty b----. (my apologies, mates!) My bodices are from Odd Bodkin or Moresca (outstanding support). I also try not to get new feathers or wear fur. I don’t like the idea of killing animals just for our pride, so I don’t wear a tail, I wear bum bells. I found some marvelous brass bells that I tied to a cord on my belt. Its just a nice jingle on my stern.
Q
Outside of going to events, are there days that you just Garb up and go out on the town. If so what type of place do you happen to go and do? I don’t garb up often outside of events, but I do enjoy going to Walmart or Hyvee for shopping after an event. I’m not in the People of Walmart, but a friend is, and she looks amazing! I went as a pirate fairy to a Convention, complete with ears. I had the best time watching their reactions and getting compliments on the application.
Q
Is there anything you would like to share with our readers?
Enjoy what you do. Live life to its fullest. Love the people that you are with. Show kindness to friends, family, and especially strangers, because a big smile can make someone’s day. Remember that its ‘Yaaar’, not ‘Arrgh’. Its a small ship; get along with your brethern. Take chances, be brave; I made a friend long ago, who then became my soulmate, my First Mate. David and I got married at the Kansas City RF in 2013. (themed Scots and Pirates) Its been quite an adventure, and I wouldn’t have it any other way! So, mates, calm seas and following winds to you.
Q
What might be your “day job”?
I’m self-employed, but I’ve worked at a public library, a Target store making people happy, and a finance call center. I liked to think of myself as a corporate pirate.
