A crow’s nest is the structure at the at of a mast which was used as a lookout. According to popular legend, the Vikings would carrry crows or ravens in a cage a top of the mast. The reason behind this choice of bird was because of the tendency to fly straight towards the nearest landmass. When visibility was poor and the shorw could not be seen, the birds would be released; the navigator would then track their movements and plot a course corresponding to the birds flight path. This position at the top of the mast became know as the “crow’s nest” abd was the best vantange point for sighting land, hazards, or other ships.

Entry 3 - Catch of the Day Journal of Bazel Clement Hopwood

I awoke to my cabin and the entire haul filled with a light smoke. This was not the smoke of a ship on fire; but had a scent of cooking meat lingering. With a deep inhale, my stomach rumbled of emptiness. I left my cabin in search for food, coming to the galley, the source of the meat soaked air. There I found the captain singing a happy tune as he cut the meat into thin strips and seasoned them. Some of the crew members were running about moving racks of meat as it dried. I had never witnessed such a thing, and upon a ship of all things! Finally I poked my head in, to see if any was ready. I had a small basket shoved into my hands full of meat by the woman in the purple dress. “You may have a piece, but you better go top side and pass the good out to the crew”, she barked at me. Before I had a chance to protest, she had a knife in hand pointing it at me, less a threat more a gesture to get moving and out of the way. The warmth of the morning sun glanced off my flesh with a cool breeze. “About Time!” a voice rung out. Figured the shout was to me, as I was baring food. Walking around the ship and passing out long half dried meat, still wondering why it was my job to hand out the food? I made my final stop up to the bridge; Elise was at the helm. I handing her the last piece of meat in the basket. “I heard you were the Captain’s Second. It is odd for a female to have such a rank, if any.” If a stair could kill, my body and blood would have been painted across the whole ship. “Now what is that supposed to mean then?” she snarled in a sharp tone with a ring of a French accent. When I tried to speak, I must have looked like a fish gasping. My mouth stopping me from saying anything more that could cause my untimely end. “Sor . . . Sorr . . . Sorry” I belted out and quickly left back down to the haul. Dropping off the basket to the galley and locking myself in my cabin. ... After what felt like a few hours I felt it was safe enough to emerge from my cabin. Stepping out I saw barrels being hosted out of the haul by cargo nets. The barrels sounded empty as the bumped into each other.

Come to find out the crew had casted fishing nets over the sides of the ship. Did they really need more fresh stock? I quickly found the man I talk to the day before, Dueien D’mont to ask. The fish was not for the crew in fact. It was to be another import to be sold at market in Boston, New York. I found a comfy place to sit near the front of the ship: leaning against the edge, watching the waves splashing off the side of the ship. I noted fins poking up out of the water, I thought must be dolphins swimming along the ship as I heard in tails that they were known for doing. I found out I was wrong when I overheard someone yell, “Look out for the sharks”. Among many things I have not saw before, sharks have been added to that list. Just below the surface I could see a shadowy outline of the creatures. A crew member yelled out as a loud thump come from one of the nets hitting the deck. Did they catch a shark in one of their nets? This is something I needed to see for myself up close. The crew were keeping their distances, once after another trying to get close but quickly backing up. I then heard an odd screeching sound. Coming up to see around the crew members, I saw the tail of a shark thrashing about. Starting from the tip of the tail that was caught in the net, my eyes followed up the two tone body, a grayish blue back and a light gray underbelly. It took my mind a moment to register what I was seeing. The top half of the shark appeared to a young woman with light pale skin and long dark blue hair. The crew kept trying to get close to her and she would slash out at them with her sharp nails. The strangest thing happened, she started to back up and curl up, what looked like fear. Was she giving up? At that time Captain Wolf arouse from the haul, making his way through. He stood in front of the ‘sharkmaid’ looking down at her, as she looked up at him fear. He kneeled down scooping her up in his arms and walked over to the edge. He looked over the edge and looked her in the eyes, with a little gesture with his head. She looked over the edge and back at the captain. With no words spoken, she shoved off of his chest, diving into the ocean. I was left speechless. This creature of myth and dangerous enough that none of the crew wanted to get close. Yet this creature feared the captain, who or what was this man?
