A popular phrase meaning ‘a cup of coffee’. The original phrase was ‘a cup of Josepg Daniels’. It was coined by sails in the US Navy, and was meant as an insult. in 1913, President Woodrow Wilson appointed Josephus Daniels as Secretary of the US Navy. Looking to impose stricter moral standards in the naval life, one of the reforms he introduced was to ban alcohol on US naval ships. With the alcohol gone, the coffee became the strongest drink available to the sailors Over time, the phrase was shortened to what is known today as ‘a cup of Joe’.

George Smith as Captain Jack Sparrow Interviewed by: Timber Gray Wolf

Q

How long have you been into the pirate life and what made you want to be a pirate?

I have been a pirate since November 2016. Growing up I’ve always liked pirates and I loved Halloween, so the two go hand in hand. What really made my mind up, was we got invited out to dinner with family. When we showed up they were in garb and I loved it, it also was talk like a pirate day. Then we got invited to Ren Faire with them, and that’s when I fell in love with the whole pirate life.

Q

What was your inspiration to take on the very popular character Captain Jack Sparrow? He was the first pirate that came to mind, and I knew everyone loved Captain Jack. After studying him i realized we had a lot in common and he would fit my personality. He’s funny, always gets himself out of sticky situations. He’s the type of person that brings laughter to people and on top of that, the ladies love him.

Q

With the Dead Men Tell no Tales, recently hitting theaters, how might the new outfit influence your current one?

I love the garb in the new movie, but I also love the garb in his older movies. When in garb people know I’m Jack, I’ll prob just continue with the garb that I have and won’t change a thing.

Q

Outside of going to events, are there days that you just Garb up and go out on the town. If so what type of place do you happen to go and do?

A few times I have, done parades and went to pubs and eatery places. Just hang out and chat with people and do photos. I have met a lot of interesting people at these places.

Q

From the great list of out there, what is one of your favorite pirate movies or books?

I love all the Pirates of the Carribean movies, but my all time favorite is the Black Sails Series! Sad to see it come to an end.

Q

What do you like the most about going to the events and what is one of your favorite so far?

Having people flock to you for photo op, it makes me feel famous for the day. I truly love the kids and knowing that I made a memory for them. It melts my heart to see them smile from ear to ear and then come to me for a photo or a hug. They get so excited when I hand them a pirate coin and come back for more. The Beaufort, NC Pirate Invasion 2017.

Q

What is your day job outside of pirating?

I’m a skilled carpenter, have been for 32 yrs. I build custom wood pirate chests and other pirate decor to vend at events as a hoby.

Q

Is there anything you would like to share with our readers?

Just want to thank many of people who helped me along the way and teaching me the pirates life, they know who they are. I wished I would have started this life style sooner. I truly found my passion in life, this is my happy place. I hope I have created a lot of memories for people and the friendships I have found. I will continue my journey in the pirates life for a very long time. I’m excited for the future and where this life style may lead me. Anyone thinking of this life style, I say go for it! You won’t regret it.

INGREDIENTS

• 1⁄2 lb cheese curds • 3 tablespoons rose water • 2 tablespoons currants • 3 egg yolks • 3 ounces butter • 3 tablespoons sugar • nutmeg, grated (to taste) • mace (optional)

NB Ricotta cheese can be used in place of cheese curd or you can make your own cheese curd very easily. Prepare a deep short-crust pastry shell (9-10 inches across) and bake it blind for 10-15 minutes in a hot oven Remove from oven and allow to cool. (Or have your pre-made pastry shell waiting.) Place the cheese curd and softened butter in a bowl and blend well. Add the egg yolks, one at a time, beating them well into the mixture. Add the rosewater, sugar, currants and nutmeg to the mixture and beat in well. Pour the filling into the cooled pastry case and bake in a moderate oven (gas Mark 4, 180C or 350F) for 30-45 minutes. (Warning- once the mixture is poured into the pie shell, it should be baked straight away. Otherwise it will start to separate and become oily and not cook well.)(The cheesecake should have risen a little and be a golden color.). Lift from oven and lightly dust with ground mace (if desired).

Entry 2 - Set Sail

Journal of Bazel Clement Hopwood

I awoke to the sound of crashing waves and the smell of salt in the air. Creeping from my cabin, I made my way above deck. The sun was high in the sky, the crew staying busy. “How long was I out?” I wondered the lower deck. The crew seemed to pay no attention to me, but I felt as if they were watching from the corner of their eyes. At first glance the Silver Moon seemed like any ordinary ship. While my hands ran over the side rail, there I noted in the wood work and molding, there were rune engravings throughout most of the ship. There were symbols of Norse origin, Celtic, and some even appeared to be from the Far East; there were so many, some that I did not know the origin of. This made me wonder if this all was a combination of sailor superstition or was there more to it. Making my way to the bridge, the captain was at the helm. To create small talk I ask, “How is the heading?” He looked at me and grinned “With the southern wind taking us north, should make good time.” I must have looked puzzled on why are we heading north. With a sigh “I have business to attend to in the Colonies, before heading to dear O’ England,” he explained. I could tell he was no longer in the mood to chat, there for back to the cabin I went. Something else I noticed on my way back below deck, there were a number of female crewmembers, each one of them working as hard as the men. ... I went above deck to inspect the reason behind us stopping so soon. By the time I arrived topside, the captain and what I believed was a young female seemed to be debating, almost arguing like a married couple; she only came up to about his eye level, long straight brown hair pulled back. I noted a short woman wearing a dark purple dress, hair braided back was leaning on the opposite side of the ship from them. I walked over asking her if “Did the captain and the misses get in an argument, is that why we are stopped?” She smiled “That isn’t his wife that is his Second Elise W’strom. They are debating if the ship is too close to those islands. Wolf thinks we are too close.”

It didn’t appear we would hit them. While I was looking over the edge, scanning the islands, not really knowing what to look for, I noticed some of the crew lowering a raft into the water. I knew it, they were going to maroon me on an island and take me for my money. While I was thinking of what to do or say, the captain had hoped into the raft. “Happy Hunting” a man with short almost shaved head yelled out as the captain left, alone with no pistol or rifle. “Hunting? Why? How?” I asked aloud. The same man that wished his captain luck explained that due to me joining the voyage, more fresh stock was needed, also the captain liked the challenged of just using a blade. “Hunting? Why? How?” I asked aloud. The same man that wished his captain luck explained; due to me joining the voyage, more fresh stock was needed, also the captain liked the challenged of just using a blade. Once night fell and the moon rose high the crew relaxed, many of them setting in early for the night, a few stayed up for the night watch. About to sleep I heard a blood curdling screech of an animal crying out. What followed after will stick with me forever, a rolling roar and a howl rang out from the same island the young captain was camping on. If a beast that could make that, I was glad I was on a ship with armed guards. The one thing that would not let me sleep soundly was not the fear of what might become of the captain, but more of the being too close to the island. ... I am not sure when I was finally able to fall asleep, for I was awoken by every little sound throughout the night. I could hear cheering of the crew above, the captain must have survived. I slowing made it to my feet; feeling of the room spinning about sent me the floor. When i reached the top deck i realized Captain Wolf did not only survive, but had a very successful hunt over night; 2 adult boars, 3 deer, and some fresh fruit. The prizes of the hunt were taken below to be cleaned and preserved. What I found surprising was all the animals were already gutted, but made sense, would hate to smell that being. The part I found off was; there was not a trace of blood on the captain’s clothes. What did he do, go all natural when hunting?
