Rolling Mill Brewing Company, Middletown

T

raditional brewing — not-so-traditional ingredients. When Josh and Megan Laubach started homebrewing, their mission was simple: create a good, gluten-free craft beer. This mission derived from Josh being diagnosed with celiac disease. Their dream came to life when they opened Rolling Mill Brewing Company; the only dedicated gluten-free brewery in Ohio, located in downtown Middletown. They now serve nine unique beers and seltzers. Each tap name has a story to tell, nodding to the important life milestones they’ve reached together. “We’ve never changed the vision behind our business. There is much beauty in being a part of something truly local and from the grassroots up,” Megan says. While working, the couple enjoys getting flatbreads from their neighbors at The Swire Inn, or walking to Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop with their three kids. rollingmillbc.com

N

adja Mirpuri aims to encourage people, which is why the saying “Dream Big” is found on the back of every staff shirt at Smoochies Boba & Crepes. After moving back to the United States from the Philippines, Nadja hoped to pursue her entrepreneurial spirit. She opened her own boba tea shop inside of Liberty Center, and its popularity led to a second location in Hamilton, and a third in West Chester. Smoochies — a fun play off of smoothies — are Nadja’s signature drink, layering three flavors together. Her shops also offer a variety of sweet and savory crepes, as well as delicious fruit and milk teas. Nadja’s personal favorite drink is the #57. “I call it that because it’s so good, people will come back 56 more times to get it,” she laughs. Nadja also says she likes being part of a diverse community, enjoying places like Northstar Cafe, Pho96, and House of Bangkok. facebook.com/smoochiesbobacrepes

t all began with homemade caramels; Karma Decker started out creating them for gifts, and it evolved into her own chocolate shop. Her caramels are still one of the most popular items, but every creation at Karma in the Kitchen is a true work of art. Karma is always innovating delicious, new ideas. Her personal favorite is the Cashmere; a brown sugar cream center with a hint of espresso. “All of the caramel, ganache, cream centers, sugar free truffles, dragees, and fudge are made in house. Every day is an adventure!” Karma says. To carry on the creativity, Karma says she likes to spend time at You’re Fired! Pottery Studio and is a huge fan of The Donut Dude, and the entire Donut Trail. karmainthekitchen.com

store was always her dream, so when the opportunity presented itself, Sara Vallandingham took the leap. She named her boutique Sara’s House to pay homage to her love for decor, design, and repurposing — not realizing it would be foreshadowing. In 2014, Sara and her husband bought a historic building in downtown Hamilton to renovate; Sara’s dream shop on the ground level, and their dream home right upstairs. “It was really just meant to be,” she says. Mixing modern and vintage pieces, the shop is truly unique; including one-of-a-kind repurposed lamps made by Sara’s husband. In 2020, Sara partnered with her daughter Maria, who brought new ideas to the table. Blending Maria’s neutral aesthetic with her mom’s eclectic style keeps Sara’s House fresh and ever-flourishing. Sara says one of the best experiences has been being part of Hamilton’s robust community, and they love supporting their neighbors Basil 1791, Tano Bistro, and Municipal Brew Works. sarashousehamilton.com

Chris, Kenny, James, Matt, Paul, James & Blaze, The Toy Experts

When several friends decided to turn their passion into a business, they brought nostalgia to a whole new level. Their one-ofa-kind toy store showcases over 50,000 vintage and modern toys The Toy Department, awaiting their next adventure. Fairfield The Toy Department buys and sells toys daily, specializing in Kenner memorabilia, pre-production collectibles, and rare prototypes. “It’s awesome to see people’s faces when they first walk in,” says Kenny Koepnick. “We see a lot of crossgenerational collecting in families too, which is really cool.” The friends met through toy shows, and they each have their own area of specialty, including Marvel, G.I. Joe, Ghostbusters, and more. Located in Fairfield, Chris says they are also big fans of Jupiter Coffee & Donuts and Lisa’s Kitchen. toydepartment.net

urrounding Miami University’s western campus lies a magnificent stone monument, preserving a significant piece of Civil Rights history. The Freedom Summer Memorial commemorates the events of Freedom Summer 1964, where over 1,000 volunteers trained in Oxford to tackle the issue of voter intimidation. Miami University’s archivist, Jacqueline Johnson, began studying Freedom Summer in 2005 and later published, Finding Freedom: Memorializing the Voices of Freedom Summer. “I wanted to write a book that focused on the stories of the Freedom Summer volunteers and Ohio’s connection to the Civil Rights movement,” she says. As an archivist, Jacqueline maintains all of Miami’s archival materials and assists patrons with reference, public service, and research. She also lives in Oxford, where her favorite restaurant is Bodega Delicatessen and she enjoys the city’s Uptown Concert Series every summer. miamioh.edu

BY JESSICA JIVANJEE As a family including one son with cerebral palsy who happens to be wheelchair bound and three autistic children, we are so grateful to live in the Cincinnati region. There are many places, events, and museums that all of my children love including great ones in Butler County. We’re excited to tell you about some of our top picks. EnterTRAINment Junction in West Chester is one of our favorite wheelchair accessible places to visit. The model train display is full of buttons that my children love to push so that they can hear all of the sounds, watch all of the lights, and turn on the trains. The on-site funhouse has so much to offer for more sensory input. With my children having autism, they are interested in lights, vibration, and anything that spins and has fast movement. EnterTRAINment Junction has all of that and much more. It’s also perfect for rainy days, hotter days, and somewhere warm to take the kiddos all winter long to release some fun energy. Seasonal events like Jack O’Lantern Junction and Christmas at the Junction are extra magical. We met Santa at EnterTRAINment Junction. He got down on his

knees to speak to my son in his wheelchair. My son felt so loved and was so full of joy. If you’re looking for a relaxed day out, be sure to visit Liberty Center. With accessible features, cool mural backdrops, tasty restaurants to try, and great shopping options, it’s the perfect place to meet up with friends. Another favorite Butler County spot is Marcum Park. Located in downtown Hamilton, this wheelchair-friendly oasis is within walking distance from a hotel, restaurants, and so much more. All of the kids absolutely love the splash pad. Adults always look forward to the DORA district and enjoy drinks while the kiddos have a great time all around the city. While in Hamilton, wander just down the street to InsideOut Studio. Here, all of the artists are wonderful adults with disabilities. Every purchase helps provide them income. I am so thankful to have been able to witness such a beautiful studio. We love supporting them and taking home their beautiful artwork. Butler County has so much to offer and we are thankful Butler County includes all families, but what makes it so special for our family is how children and adults with disabilities are supported and welcomed in this community.

Butler County hAs so much to offer And we Are thAnkful Butler County includes All fAmilies, but whAt mAkes it so speciAl for our fAmily is how children And Adults with disAbilities Are supported And welcomed in this community. 12 TRAVE LB UT LE RCOU NTY.COM
