Remodeling Done Right
There’s no place like home — when the spaces within it function for your lifestyle. And with the pandemic limiting travel, dining, entertainment and in-person work for a duration beyond what many of us expected, we shifted into nesting mode, big time. NARI remodelers report full schedules, along with wait times on materials and, notably, a tough time finding labor. Meanwhile, we embraced a fresh appreciation for staying in, and staying in style.
This year’s NARI Home Improvement Show returns in person — and has the celebratory feel of gathering safely again with the connecting and relationship-building that are a foundation for a successful remodeling project. At the end of the day, it’s all about the people.
To that end, emphasizing the essential worker aspect of remodeling and sharing the fulfilling career path is a focus at this year’s show as those desiring home improvement projects recognize more than ever the

He Shed, She Shed
A backyard man cave and a ladies’ only outpost. Which will win the vote of NARI 12/2/14 9:31 PM Home Improvement Show attendees? 12/2/14 9:31 PM This year’s He Shed She Shed competition challenges two professional remodeling 12/2/14 9:31 PM companies to design and install a standardsize shed decked out with all the trappings for the man or woman of the house. And after nearly two years of pandemic living at home, “needing that space away is appealing,” says Maltry, adding that JEMM Construction is constructing the She Shed, hinting at a shabby-chic, calming retreat. “It’s a great place to get away and have some alone time, whether that be to work on hobbies or relax,” Maltry says of the

shed appeal for man and wife. “If you’re a gardener, you can keep your tools there. If you’re into crafts, it can be all about artwork — whatever the case may be.”
Remodel Me Today is constructing the He Shed as a masculine, speakeasy-feeling outpost. “We’ll include a bar, and it will be a bourbon-and-cigar concept with a blue exterior and deep wood colors on the inside,” says Brian Pauley, owner.

Career Plays
Involving trade students in every aspect of the NARI Home Improvement Show is a priority — especially this year, with the association’s focused educational and recruitment efforts to showcase the industry’s career opportunities. As masters in carpentry, plumbing, HVAC and general construction age, there’s a gap in fresh talent and a growing demand for remodeling services among consumers.
“We’re excited to support workforce development and are partnering with local vocational schools,” Maltry says, naming Auburn Career Center, Lorain County Joint Vocational School (JVS), Media County Career Center, Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) and Lakeland Community College.
“Some of them will work hand in hand next to an assigned remodeler on a show feature,” Maltry says, relating how students can experience the construction process from design to final details.
Especially for students is a playhouse design and construction competition, along with a silent auction to bid on the structure. Winners will receive scholarships from NARI to advance their construction career, Maltry shares.
Aside from involving building trade students, the show has also invited Auburn Career Center culinary students to conduct a special presentation at the Chef’s Table experience for a couple hours one day during the show.
Not only is the student involvement a

valuable learning opportunity for young people pursuing construction trade education — it also exposes families attending the show to the vibrant industry and its wide range of jobs, including the entrepreneurial aspect of owning and operating a remodeling company.
Maltry, an Auburn Career Center graduate, is a testament to how students can build their own destinies in the remodeling industry. “We really need students, parents and the public to understand and appreciate the importance of [the trades], and by involving them in the show, we’re getting them excited.”
Local Flavor
From area artisans’ displays in the Maker’s Market to local brew from Platform Beer Co., the region’s top remodelers and the vibrant Downtown Cleveland setting, this year’s NARI Home Improvement Show is truly all about “home.”
The show is Northeast Ohio sourced — and a resource hub for anyone considering a remodeling project or who’s looking for the latest appliances, fixtures, surfaces, cabinetry, flooring, smart features, decor and more. It’s a soup-to-nuts, design-build-improve experience that concentrates on remodeling, which differentiates the show from other homes events.
“We’re localizing the show by including students. By choosing a NARI remodeling company, you’re hiring local, and we’ll also be featuring local food and drinks,” says Ken Perrin, owner, Artistic Renovations of Ohio LLC. “Supporting Cleveland businesses is a plus, and buying local is a better way to go.”
What to Ask
Start building a Pinterest board and save ideas from Houzz. The more you can show and tell NARI remodelers about your plans, the better they can share ideas and guide you as you select a pro and begin the home improvement process.
“Even a small drawing with some minor measurements is helpful in the initial concept stages,” Pauley says. Before you meet or interview contractors at the show, be prepared to answer some of these questions:
1.) Will you maintain the same floorplan and layout, or will the project require removing or building walls? This could impact mechanicals like plumbing and electrical that is housed inside of them.
2.) Pauley likes to prompt people to “tell me about the existing space.” For example, an older home comes with different variables that can drastically change the remodeling process. For example, a home built in 1940 where a project requires opening up walls could unveil surprises that are not expected when remodeling a home built in the 1990s. 3.) What “level” of finishes are you considering: high-end, midtier or cost-conscious? Do you have a budget in mind? 4.) Do you feel comfortable when meeting with the contractor? “Meet the people who work at the company and see if they are a good fit for you,” Perrin advises. “At the end of the day, you should pick the professional you know you can work with.”
