We’d like to take this opportunity to reflect on this unique milestone with you. Since 1967, Alumet’s professionals have shared a single passion: anodizing. We care about creating a more sustainable and attractive product. Alumet started out by anodizing aluminium combs. Now we anodize spectacular façades for award-winning architectural designs. From Amsterdam to Dubai, Alumet’s products grace skylines across the globe. Alumet’s new building and new line reached completion in the autumn of 2020. Our new premises cover a total area of 10,000 m² of production hall and 850 m² of office space. This gives us extra space for more capacity and more options. Our new line produces no less than forty colours, along with various new finishes, extra matte and chemical bright. In short: a wide selection of beautiful, natural options. This book shares with you the history of Alumet, our vision, and the sustainable solutions we deliver to the world of contemporary architecture. Also included are 12 inspiring, innovative architectural projects that chose our product. From Hotel Jakarta in Amsterdam to the Bunhill 2 Energy Centre in London. Curious to learn more? Read on... 1967 – 2021

How it all began… More than fifty years ago, Alumet moved into the premises on Nieuwe Donk in Etten-Leur. Back then, the company focused on anodizing aluminium combs. Alumet now specialises in façade cladding and offers a range of no less than forty (!) colours. Today Remco Baartmans is at the helm of a highly successful, international and avantgarde company with some seventy employees. What’s the story behind Alumet’s success? The owner and director explains.

What exactly is anodizing?

Anodizing is an electrochemical process that transforms the metal surface into a decorative, long-lasting, corrosion-resistant, wear-resistant oxide layer. This aluminium oxide is not applied to the surface like coating or plating, but is fully integrated with the underlying aluminium substrate. It has a highly ordered, porous structure which allows for additional processes such as colouring. Alumet’s anodizing layers meet the highest quality standards, including QUALANOD and BS-3987.

“ O ur new production line yields energy savings and water reduction of no less than eighty percent”

corrosion for years to come, and will not chip, crack or develop filiform corrosion. Moreover, we guarantee that corrosion on unprotected and untreated saw cuts will not affect the adjacent anodized layers. And finally: we promise that the natural and electrocoloured panels will not fade in sunlight.”

A lifespan of 80 years! Anodized aluminium in architectural applications requires extremely low maintenance. Composed of metal and aluminium oxide, the anodized layer is hard and extremely tough. Maintenance consists of only one thing: cleaning. Baartmans: “A clean anodized aluminium surface has an extremely long life span. Under normal conditions, it will easily last 80 years. And without losing any of the gloss or colour (in electrocoloured layers).”

9

Alumet promises

• A sleek, modern look that enhances aluminium’s natural beauty

• High solar reflectivity for ‘cool buildings’

• Durable, corrosion-resistant and colour-resistant finishes

• An anticipated lifespan of over 80 years

• A 20-year guarantee on all colours 20 mu in accordance with QUALANOD

• A 40-year guarantee on all colours 25 mu in accordance with BS3987

• Low maintenance products • Cradle to cradle: can be completely and repeatedly recycled

• Circular: can easily be recoloured at the end of its lifespan

10

3D effect Another eye-catching option is Panelox. Unlike most panels, this aluminium panel consists of two anodized layers: matte and glossy shades and an etched pattern. Baartmans: “The combination of one or two colours with a decorative motif produces a stunning effect. Seen from a distance, the glossy sections catch the light, creating a slightly 3D or relief effect.” Alumet developed an inspiring range of six patterns: Stone, Rust, Frozen, Zinc, Flower and Fibre. We can also customise panels with your own design.

Energy savings and water reduction According to Baartmans, Alumet makes sustainable use of water and energy for anodizing: “When it comes to the future and the generations to come, we use the most sustainable products on the market. Alumet is committed to protecting the environment. We closely monitor our consumption of raw materials and energy. Recently, we introduced two key features to boost our energy efficiency: we installed solar panels on the roof of our new building, and acquired a new production line that yields energy savings and water reduction of no less than eighty percent.”

Certification

Naturally, Alumet also has the necessary accreditation, such as:

• BS Certificate BS3987: the leading British Standard for colour (where applicable), layer thickness, sealing and damage for clear and coloured anodizing layers.

• Qualanod: the premium quality hallmark for anodizing aluminium. This international quality label is based on a detailed specification for both process and product requirements.

• ISO certificate: Alumet’s quality management system meets the standards of ISO 9001:2015. 11

A new building with a new line

10,000 square meters and Architects have (re)discovered anodizing. In recent years, the demand for highquality anodizing has sky-rocketed! Remco Baartmans: “We started investing in new colours and processes back in 2014. But hadn’t predicted the enormous increase in demand, both at home and internationally. We needed to expand. With more people, a new building, and even more colours and finishes.”

10,000 m² production facility The ambitions became reality in the autumn of 2020: Alumet’s new building and new line are here. The production facility covers a total surface area of 10,000 m², with 850 m² devoted to office space. The anodizing line is on one side, with space for work preparation and to package the material on the other. The result: a safe, clean and pleasant working environment for everyone.

New façade is Alumet’s calling card It goes without saying that the façade of the new premises looks absolutely stunning. The exterior of the offices is clad in Alucobond composite panels, anodized by Alumet of course, that have been asymmetrically mounted. Baartmans: “The irregular placement of the composite panels gives the office area a sense of movement. The façade brings life to the building, as well as

Onyx has an American flavor. The brick corpus visually supports the building as does the color of the aluminum windows and the facade panels. They have the same dark color, anodised by Alumet in color C35. In addition to a balcony, each apartment has an electrically operated sliding window. A push on the button transforms the loft into a large outdoor space.

Residential tower with international allure in Eindhoven The Onyx residential tower in the heart of Eindhoven has an American flavour. In appearance, it recalls classic high rise buildings in cities like New York or Chicago. An impression that isn’t created by the height which, at 85 metres is lofty for the Netherlands but of course modest by American standards. The 23-storey tower derives its international, almost cosmopolitan allure primarily from the brick architecture and long façade lines, an effect that is amplified by the classic configuration of a plinth, a corpus and a crown. Alumet provided the gleaming anodized bronze

finish for this Dutch ‘skyscraper’.

Alumet is a preferred partner of Reynaers. The companies have had a very close working relationship for years, says Sales & Marketing Manager Hans van der Looij: “We deliver profiles to Alumet daily. How the partnership came about? You’ll have to ask our customers. It is not Reynaers who needs profiles anodizing to meet strict requirements. No, that’s something that Reynaers’ customers, the window and door manufacturers, want. Our customers often told us how impressed they were with Alumet’s expertise. But at the time, we had another supplier who ended up being unable to provide the flexibility and quality we needed. We spent three months screening other suppliers, and mindful of ISO 14.001, chose Alumet as our preferred supplier. A decision that we, and our clients in particular, still endorse.”

From grey to gleaming bronze The dimensions of the profiles were adjusted (they are 76 mm deep) to provide high windload resistance. Because the profiles project slightly outwards from the façade, they create an exciting frame around the three glass panels. The colour and finish are also unusual. Because it stands in dull, grey surroundings, the architect wanted the tower to make a statement. This is achieved by using aluminium profiles with a bronze finish. Anodizing the aluminium also gives a beautiful gloss.

The hotel is housed in a slender 16-storey, 252-room, nearly seventy-meter-high tower, the culmination of the site's transformation. The first floors of the hotel contain the reception, bar, meeting areas, restaurant and lounge. There is also a car park with ninety parking bays and a conference centre, with capacity for a total of two thousand people.

Elegant and slender The hotel tower was designed by Architectenbureau Concrete and consists of two narrow volumes that have been split and shifted apart to narrow the structure’s appearance. On the side of the square and the Kauwgomballenfabriek, the hotel plinth is made of glass, while the building on the side of the metro flyovers is more closed off. The hotel abuts a staircase that partly continues into the building, linking the functions on the ground floor and the first floor. The centrepiece of the hotel is the abstract façade with its static rhythm of anodized aluminium cassettes.

A round buffet with a mosaic in anodized aluminium Alumet was thrilled to have the opportunity of anodizing the aluminium panels of the round buffet. The colours selected were: AluBronze02 and AluBronze03 with a mosaic-shaped design by Art 2 Go interior projects. To create the Lucky Apple aluminium buffet, Alumet used the ‘panelox technique’. Baartmans: “It’s a process we use to etch patterns in metal. And if the customer wishes, as was the case with Lucky Apple, we can even do it in two colours.

An eye-catching design thanks to its golden façade The Drie Eiken campus of the University of Antwerp is enriched by a new multidisciplinary building: Building O, a visually exciting design with an iconic façade. Artist Perry Roberts, together with META architecture office, translated the concept of the university as a democratic gathering place into an artwork that embellishes the building’s frontage. A photograph of students and teaching staff was punched into golden aluminium façade panels. The result? Even from a distance: impressive.

E

Each of the sheets, 2,400 in total, was perforated individually and has a unique coding. They were then converted into a cassette with a depth of 45 millimetres and transported to Alumet to be anodized in AluGold03.

340,000 aluminium birds in 7 shapes and 4 shades In 2007, architect Jean Nouvel won an international competition to design the new Philharmonie de Paris. And that’s quite a feat because the architect created much more than a concert hall. The organic forms of the aluminium work of art rise like a hill from the Parc de la Villette, the façade of which is covered with a mosaic of birds in seven different shapes and four shades of AluGrey. Alumet was given the honour of anodizing the 340,000 different aluminium birds.

Hotel BOAT & CO in Amsterdam

Traditional sturdy brick combined with modern, durable anodized frames Hotel BOAT & CO in the Houthaven on the banks of the IJ is one of Amsterdam’s latest sustainable architectural icons. The building was designed by Kollhoff Architekten and is an ode to the Amsterdam School. The result? Partly thanks to the insulated aluminium profile systems supplied by Kawneer and Alumet: an almost energy-neutral hotel with an EPC of 0.041.

T

The hotel has no shortage of window frames. Façade manufacturer Kolf & Molijn supplied and installed no fewer than 330 aluminium window frames for BOAT & CO. A unique stepped profile was chosen for both the window frames and curtain wall. The architect chose to sufacetreat the frames by anodizing them in the colour C335, a shade of bronze that beautifully complements the traditional brickwork in this unique design. Kawneer provided the RT 72 window frames and curtain wall systems for the project. Rob Huvers, Manager Marketing & New Business at Kawneer, explains: “Partly thanks to these insulated aluminium profile systems, we were able to realise an almost energy-neutral hotel with an EPC of 0.041. What’s more, Kawneer’s frames and curtain wall profiles are Cradle to Cradle certified products, including the hardware and surface treatment. The natural anodizing process, carried out by Alumet, ensures that the aluminium is one hundred percent recyclable.

Close collaboration Lars van den Berg, Technical Manager Kawneer: “Kawneer and Alumet share a long history. Both companies grew out of Alcoa, so we started in the same place. Our collaboration began years ago. Since then, each company has significantly grown and expanded. We believe that the rewards of a good collaboration are improved processes and a higher quality product. That’s why, for so many years, we’ve worked with Alumet. We can count on them for a smooth order and delivery process, and for a product of outstanding quality. And in turn, Alumet values working with us, and involved Kawneer in developing the new production facility. We helped to optimise the technology, delivery and service. I think that says a lot about the closeness of our collaboration.”

Bronze façade inspired by the site’s cloth making heritage In the heart of London’s financial district stands the 19-metre-high cylinder ‘3 Broadgate’. Despite a wide walkway on the ground floor, passers-by saw the building as a barrier and something to be avoided. A stunning transformation by Orms Architects London changed all that. Today, 3 Broadgate is an inviting archway with a shimmering bronze

aluminium façade inspired by the former clothmaking industry.

The architect designed 5,370 aluminium small rectangular overlapping tiles, anodized in AluBronze02, that wrap themselves around the building in a wave, like a veil.

Post X in Antwerp

A jewel close to the ring road, with anodized colour nuances An innovative architectural landmark is situated close to the Antwerp ring road between the Kennedy tunnel and the Sportpaleis: Post X. Post X comprises a total of nine volumes, but is designed as one homogeneous campus. This shared identity is expressed in the same use of materials, repetition and relatively tight configuration of the buildings. Yet accents such as colour nuances in the façades gives each building a distinct persona.

60

A

By applying a mix of brass, gold and transparent anodized panels, the architectural firms Jaspers-Eyers Architects and Stéphane Beel Architects created added nuance. The subtle colour differences within the various shades were intentional. Remco Baartmans: “We achieved these tonal nuances by controlling the etching and anodizing times. The result? Anodized façade panels in the colours AluBrass01, AluNature and AluGold01.

Sustainable and circular

Post X is both cutting edge and highly sustainable. The complex is one of the largest office projects in Belgium that took all parameters into consideration. Special attention was given to features such as the insulation, spatial orientation and the size of the glass surfaces of the buildings. Rather than equip the office areas with air conditioning, they are warmed and cooled via concrete core activation. Combined with geothermal energy, this has produced an exceptionally sustainable application. Compared to standard office environments, Post X aims to reduce energy consumption by fifty percent.

Hotel Moxy in Antwerp

Cool bronze for young, trendy hotel guests In 2019 the Swedish furniture chain Ikea opened a hotel in Antwerp’s trendy Zuid district, on the site of the former Zillion nightclub. The Swedish furniture giant teamed up with the famous hotel chain Marriott to launch the new hotel brand. Which is why the hotel doesn’t carry the Ikea name, but has been christened ‘Moxy’: not a traditional four-star hotel but a stylish contemporary concept designed with meeting spaces for young, trendy travellers! And that deserved a stunning bronze façade.

64

M

Moxy Hotels, a brand launched by Ikea and Marriott International, already has venues in world cities like New York, Paris, Tokyo, London and Chicago. A fresh, innovative venue for young, tech-savvy travellers. Playing to this stylish contemporary vibe, the partners devised a clever concept light years away from the traditional four-star hotel. A youthful brand to deliver a fun guest experience.

Young and fun Hotel Moxy is designed for ‘millennials’, the generation aged between 18 and 33. This is captured in an ‘affordable design hotel’ with plenty of power outlets, a fast Wi-Fi connection and a big, fun lobby. The Moxy hotel boasts a

Anodized composite This ‘contemporary style’ naturally needed to sparkle in Moxy’s façade. Which is why the architect opted for bronze on composite, an unusual combination. Remco Baartmans explains: “Composite is generally lacquered but the architect wanted something different for this project. It became one of our first collabo-

In the last few years, the demand for anodized composite soared rapidly. Hotel Moxy was at the forefront. It was one of the first projects in which we collaborated with Alumet. Why did we choose Alumet then and now? Quite simply because we want the very best quality.”

What you see is a renewed and improved Alumet. A new building, a new line and a number of new employees. None of this would have been possible without you. I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all Alumet employees, partners, clients and family. First of all, I would like to thank our contractor, Valeres, and the constructor of our new line, Cisart. Because without you, there would be no new building and no improved process. And, of course, not forgetting the Karma company, who helped us achieve our dream. Valeres, Cisart and Karma, and especially Thijs Adriaans, Claudio Cittadini and Fausto Massarini, thank you! A big thank you, of course to our partners for helping to make this book happen. Reynaers Aluminium, Kawneer, 3A Composites and Aldowa, I am deeply grateful to you for our support and trust. And, naturally, I’d like to thank my family, colleagues and relations. We have formed a close and amazing team over the last few years. A team that I am proud of. Thank you for your expertise and loyalty. Without you, there would be no Alumet. A big ‘thanks’ to family, employees and clients! All that's left for me to say is: here’s to the next 50 years! Warm regards, Remco Baartmans
