een magazine opengeslagen waarin wij, de medewerkers van Van Dam, graag samen met u stilstaan bij een belangrijke mijlpaal voor ons bedrijf: ons 60-jarige jubileum. Al vanaf de start is technische innovatie de drijvende kracht achter Van Dam. Dat leidde tot printmachines die steeds mooiere prints konden maken in een steeds hoger tempo en met een groter gemak voor de gebruiker. Ons nieuwe speerpunt is duurzaamheid. Wij willen hoogwaardige printmachines leveren die efficiënte printtechnieken combineren met optimale mogelijkheden voor recycling van verpakkingsmaterialen met een niet-flexibele vorm. Graag willen wij samen met de verpakkingsindustrie toewerken naar zero waste van verpakkingsmaterialen. In dit magazine leest u meer over onze geschiedenis, onze producten en diensten, de gezichten achter het bedrijf en hoe wij onze visie van zero waste willen realiseren.

In the magazine you have just opened, we, Van Dam’s employees, want to reflect with you on a significant milestone for our company: our 60th anniversary. Technical innovation has been the driving force behind Van Dam from the very start, resulting in printing machines that were able to produce increasingly beautiful prints at an ever-increasing pace and with greater ease of use. Our latest focus is sustainability. We want to offer high-quality printing machines that combine efficient printing techniques with excellent options for recycling packaging materials with a non-flexible shape. We are keen to collaborate with the packaging industry towards our aim of zero waste of packaging materials. Read on to find out more about our history, our products and services, the faces behind the company and how we intend to realize our zero-waste vision.

GESCHIEDENIS IN VOGELVLUCHT

In1962 richtte de Nederlander Albert van Dam zijn bedrijf Van Dam Machine Corporation op. Het eerste kantoor was gevestigd in New York, de stad die in de zeventiende eeuw is ontstaan als nederzetting van Nederlandse kolonisten en die toen de naam Nieuw-Amsterdam droeg. Het bedrijf produceerde machines voor het bedrukken van ballonnen.

Al snel na de start ontdekte Albert van Dam dat er op de Europese markt goede kansen lagen voor de verkoop van bedrukkingsmachines voor plastic verpakkingen. Vanwege zijn Nederlandse afkomst besloot hij in 1964 een filiaal op te zetten in het oude Amsterdam, de hoofdstad van Nederland, waar deze machines geproduceerd werden.

Om te kunnen groeien, waren grote investeringen nodig. Van Dam ging daarom op zoek naar financieel sterke partners, waarbij een voorwaarde was dat Van Dam onafhankelijk bleef. Vanaf de jaren 1970 tot nu heeft Van Dam verschillende eigenaren gehad. Het bedrijf heeft hierdoor veel kunnen investeren in de ontwikkeling van nieuwe technologieën en in productiefaciliteiten. Tegenwoordig heeft Van Dam twee kantoren: één in Michigan voor de Amerikaanse markt en één in Amsterdam voor de rest van de wereld. Het bedrijf is marktleider in de levering van printmachines voor de bedrukking van ronde bekers.

De focus ligt sinds enkele jaren op duurzaamheid. Van Dam onderzoekt onder andere de mogelijkheden van bedrukking van nieuwe, relatief duurzame materialen als papierpulp. Ook neemt het bedrijf deel aan een project van Wageningen University & Research dat erop gericht is in de recyclefase de inkt van (recyclebare) plastic bekers te wassen.

From its very establishment, Van Dam has been a frontrunner in technical innovations.

Sustainability has been their focus for several years now. Among other things, Van Dam is exploring options for printing on new, relatively sustainable materials such as paper pulp. The company is also participating in a Wageningen University & Research project aimed at washing the ink off (recyclable) plastic cups in the recycling phase.

INNOVATIEVE TECHNOLOGIE VOOR LEVENSECHTE KLEUREN

Van Dam levert printmachines voor de bedrukking van niet-flexibele (rigid) verpakkingsmaterialen, waarbij de apparatuur precies kan worden afgestemd op de wensen van de klant.

Bij

de directe bedrukking van niet-flexibele verpakkingsmaterialen komt heel wat kijken. De belangrijkste stappen in het printproces zijn: aanvoeren, separeren, voorbehandelen, bedrukken, drogen, afblazen en aftellen. De printmachines die al deze stappen moeten uitvoeren, kunnen uit wel zevenduizend onderdelen bestaan. Veel van de componenten zijn standaard, maar andere worden aangepast aan de wensen van de klant. Zo is de vorm van de mandrel afgestemd op de vorm van het verpakkingsmateriaal, of dit nu een ronde beker is of een vierkante bak. Voor de bedrukking van deksels wordt dan weer een schoenvormige tegenvorm gebruikt. De onderdelen en afstelling van de printmachine hangen ook af van het gebruikte verpakkingsmateriaal, wat kan variëren van plastic tot papierpulp en van piepschuim tot metaal.

Nieuwe printtechnologie

De afgelopen jaren hebben medewerkers van Van Dam samen met enkele toeleveranciers gewerkt aan de ontwikkeling van een compleet nieuwe machinelijn, genaamd FDoR (Flexo Direct on Rigid). Van oudsher wordt bij het bedrukken van ronde en hoekige vormen veel gebruikgemaakt van dry offset-printtechnologie. De kleuren worden hierbij in piepkleine puntjes vlak naast elkaar geprint, zoals bij een ouderwetse kleurentelevisie. Deze technologie is zeer geschikt voor bedrukking van grafische afbeeldingen met grote kleurvlakken, maar geeft minder mooie resultaten bij fotoprints. FDoR maakt het mogelijk om verschillende kleuren over elkaar heen te drukken, waardoor een groot kleurenpalet ontstaat. Deze kleurenpracht sluit naadloos aan bij Van Dams slogan: ’Print Lifelike Colors’. Wat ook mooi is: de ontwikkelde machines kunnen een productiesnelheid van 650 bedrukkingen per minuut halen. Een ander voordeel van de nieuwe machines is dat ze minder inkten en oplosmiddelen gebruiken en daarmee bijdragen aan duurzaamheid –een speerpunt voor Van Dam.

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR LIFELIKE COLORS

Van Dam supplies printing machines for printing non-flexible (rigid) packaging materials, which can be precisely tailored to the customer’s wishes.

There are many factors to consider in the process of direct printing on non-flexible packaging materials. The most important steps in the printing process are: feeding, separating, pre-treatment, printing, drying, blowing off and counting off. The printing machines that have to perform all these steps can consist of as many as seven thousand parts. Although many of the components are standard, some will be adapted to the customer’s requirements. The shape of the mandrel, for example, is adapted to the shape of the packaging material, whether it is a round cup or a square container. For the printing of the lids, a shoe-shaped reverse-shape is used. The components and adjustment of the printing machine also depend on the packaging material used, which can vary from plastic to paper pulp and from Styrofoam to metal.

New printing technology

In recent years, Van Dam employees have collaborated with several suppliers to develop a brand-new machine line called FDoR (Flexo Direct on Rigid). Traditionally, dry offset printing technology was widely used in the printing of round and angular shapes. This involves printing the colors in tiny dots next to each other, like in an oldfashioned color television. This technology is highly suitable for printing graphics with large areas of color, but leads to less pleasing results in photo prints. With FDoR, it is possible to print different colors on top of each other, thus creating a large color palette. This blaze of color fits in seamlessly with Van Dam’s slogan: ’Print Lifelike Colors’. What’s more: the developed machines can achieve a production speed of 650 prints per minute. Another advantage of the new machines is that they use less ink and solvent and thus contribute to sustainability –an important focus for Van Dam.

DE GEZICHTEN ACHTER…

Bij Van Dams vestiging in Amsterdam werken enkele tientallen mensen op zes verschillende afdelingen. Een paar medewerkers stellen zich graag aan u voor.

THE FACES BEHIND…

At Van Dam’s office in Amsterdam, you will find a few dozen people working in six different departments. Allow us to introduce you to some of our employees.

Inkoop

Vincent Bras en Saskia van Huijgevoort zijn twee van de gezichten van de afdeling inkoop. Zij zorgen ervoor dat de machineonderdelen op het juiste moment voor de juiste prijs en vooral de juiste kwaliteit bij Van Dam geleverd worden. Dat betekent dat zij nauwe contacten onderhouden met de circa tweehonderd leveranciers van Van Dam, die onder andere verspaande onderdelen, plaatwerk en elektronica leveren.

Saskia werkt ruim tien jaar voor het bedrijf en houdt van de hectiek van haar functie: ”Elke werkdag komen er wel collega’s binnenlopen met een vraag of opmerking. Het geeft mij veel voldoening als ik ze kan helpen.” Vincent werkt rond de twintig jaar voor Van Dam. Hij vergelijkt de werkwijze binnen het bedrijf met een Formule 1-team: ”Wij proberen ook continu op technisch vlak de grenzen te verleggen. Die drang naar innovatie maakt dit een mooi bedrijf om voor te werken.”

Purchasing

Vincent Bras and Saskia van Huijgevoort are two of the faces of our purchasing department. Their job is to ensure that machine parts are delivered to Van Dam at the right time and the right price and, above all: the right quality. This means that they stay in close contact with Van Dam’s approximately two hundred suppliers, who provide our company with, among other things, machined parts, sheet metal and electronics.

Saskia has worked for the company for more than ten years and loves the hectic pace of her job: ”Every working day, colleagues will pop in with a question or comment. I derive great satisfaction from being able to help them.” Vincent has been with Van Dam for twenty years. He compares the company’s working methods with a Formula 1 team: ”We also continuously try to push the boundaries in terms of technology. This urge to innovate makes Van Dam a wonderful company to work for.”

Werkplaats

In de werkplaats assembleren monteurs losse machineonderdelen tot volledige printmachines. Sietse Westra is als assembly engineer verantwoordelijk voor de montage van kleurkoppen, inclusief aanvullende accessoires. Zijn carrière bij Van Dam begon 35 jaar geleden en hij heeft het nog steeds zeer naar zijn zin. ”Dit soort werk krijg je nergens anders. Ik kan zeer zelfstandig te werk gaan en de onderlinge contacten zijn goed.”

Workshop

In the workshop, mechanics assemble the individual machine parts into complete printing machines. As an assembly engineer, Sietse Westra is responsible for the assembly of color heads, including additional accessories. He started his career with Van Dam 35 years ago and he is still having an excellent time. ”You won’t find this kind of job anywhere else. I can work independently and the interpersonal contact is very good.”

QA/QC

De afdeling QA/QC voert controles uit op complexe onderdelen die leveranciers opsturen. Verder checken kwaliteitsmedewerkers de tekeningen van de engineers van Van Dam op maakbaarheid. Ze controleren ook volledig geassembleerde machines uit de werkplaats. Fred Schaap is kwaliteitsmanager op deze afdeling en werkt al meer dan dertig jaar voor Van Dam. Over zijn werk zegt hij: ”Het is een heel apart wereldje, want er zijn maar een paar bedrijven wereldwijd die dezelfde technieken gebruiken. Zo’n omgeving past bij mij.”

QA/QC

The QA/QC department performs checks on complex components suppliers have sent. The quality employees also check the drawings by Van Dam’s engineers for manufacturability. They also check fully assembled machines that roll out of the workshop. Fred Schaap is a quality manager in this department and has worked for Van Dam for more than thirty years. About his work, he says: ”It’s a unique environment, because only a few companies worldwide use the same technology. I feel right at home in this environment.”

De afdeling Spares levert reserve-onderdelen en aftermarketproducten die functionaliteit toevoegen aan een printmachine, zoals printeenheden met meerdere kleurkoppen. Eric Gerber is customer service manager en werkt sinds 2000 voor Van Dam. Hij vertelt: ”Ik houd van techniek en bij Van Dam maken wij een technisch hoogstaand product waar we als Nederlanders trots op mogen zijn!”

Spares

The Spares department supplies spare parts and after-market products that add to the functionality of a printing machine, such as printing units with multiple color heads. Eric Gerber is a customer service manager who started working for Van Dam in 2000. In his own words: ”I just love technology, and at Van Dam we make a technically superior product of which us Dutch people can be proud!"

Technical Service

Monteurs van de afdeling Technical Service reizen de wereld over om klanten die een nieuwe printmachines hebben gekocht, te helpen met de inbedrijfstelling. Daarnaast helpen ze bestaande klanten die een probleem hebben aan hun apparaat – in eerste instantie online en als het nodig is op locatie. Rob de Bruin werkt bijna 34 jaar voor Van Dam en heeft veel gereisd toen hij nog technisch monteur was. ”Nu geef ik leiding aan deze afdeling. Het werk is zeer divers en ik vind het leuk dat wij klanten hebben in allerlei verschillende landen.”

Technical Service

Engineers from the Technical Service department travel the world to help customers who have bought new printing machines with commissioning. They also help existing customers who have a problem with their device – initially online and on location if required. Rob de Bruin has worked for Van Dam for almost 34 years and used to travel a lot when he was still a technical mechanic. ”Now I supervise this department. The work is incredibly diverse and I like that we have customers in many different countries.”

Engineering

Van Dam koopt niet alle machineonderdelen in. Engineers van het bedrijf ontwerpen een deel ervan zelf, vaak in samenwerking met de leverancier van dat specifieke onderdeel. Oscar Link werkt al 35 jaar voor Van Dam en is tegenwoordig lead engineer. Hij heeft al heel wat grote veranderingen in printmachines langs zien komen, waaronder de ontwikkeling van de machinelijn FDoR. ”Al deze veranderingen maken het een heel dynamisch bedrijf, waar altijd wel iets aan de hand is.”

Arlette Alphenaar werkt sinds 2017 voor Van Dam en houdt zich als senior mechanical engineer vooral bezig met de ontwikkeling van nieuwe tooling. Ze is positief over de afwisseling in haar werkzaamheden: ”Het ene moment ben ik bezig met de ontwikkeling van nieuwe mechanische onderdelen en het volgende moment werk ik met inkten. Dat bevalt mij goed!”

Engineering

Not all machine parts Van Dam uses are purchased. Company engineers design some parts in-house, often in collaboration with the supplier of that particular part. Oscar Link has been working for Van Dam for 35 years and is now a lead engineer. He has seen many major changes in printing machines in his time with Van Dam, including the development of the FDoR machine line. ”All these changes make it a very dynamic company; there is always something going on.”

Arlette Alphenaar started working for Van Dam in 2017 and, as a senior mechanical engineer, is mainly involved in the development of new tooling. She loves the variety in her work: ”One moment I am working on the development of new mechanical parts and the next moment I’ll be working with inks. I really enjoy the variety!”

SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGICAL SOLUTIONS

The 60-year anniversary of Van Dam is a confirmation of the performance of the company, its employees and its partner companies, because it marks a long and eventful period with many highlights, challenges and certainly also some substantial changes.

Our ink series UVACURID PrimeCup C81 as FCM ink series according to EuPIA, Nestlé and Swiss guidelines, as well as the American ink series 71, 76, 77 and 78 were successfully established on the market as recognised products.

Van

Ik zie de toekomst van Van Dam met vertrouwen tegemoet. Wij zijn in staat om technisch complexe machines te bouwen die mooie bedrukkingen geven en waarbij het te bedrukken beeld gemakkelijk te vervangen is. Verder is directe bedrukking een duurzame oplossing in vergelijking met labels van plastic of papier. Recyclingapparaten kunnen deze labels moeilijk herkennen, wat hergebruik van de verpakkingen lastig maakt. Wij onderzoeken op dit moment in een groot consortium de mogelijkheden van gebruik van afwasbare inkten. Ook werken we aan bedrukking van recyclebare verpakkingen van papierpulp. Kortom: wij zijn klaar voor de volgende zestig jaar!

Over the past sixty years, Van Dam would not have been able to develop its activities without the help of others. I would therefore like to thank all our suppliers for supplying us with their high-quality products. In addition, I want to thank our employees for their efforts to deliver such a wonderful technical product.

Looking forward to the future of Van Dam, I feel very confident. We are able to build technically complex machines that deliver wonderful printing results, with the image to be printed being very easy to replace. Furthermore, direct printing is a sustainable solution compared with labels made of plastic or paper. Recycling devices currently struggle to recognize these labels, which makes it difficult to reuse the packaging. We are researching the possibilities of using washable inks in a large consortium. We are also working on printing on recyclable paper pulp packaging. In other words: bring on the next sixty years!
