New centres taking shape

The new community centres are progressing well and are set to be finished in the spring. Residents got to ask development partners all sorts of questions about what was happening when at a community question time session. Representatives from Cultural Elevation, who have been asking local people what they want from the new centres, gave an insight into what residents have been saying about the services and activities they would like to see happening there. Residents interested in joining the steering group will meet regularly with project partners to develop a business plan for the centres, with initial training sessions happening soon. High on the list of future activities, in line with Oldham Council’s priorities, will be sessions that help people to find work, education and training and get-togethers to encourage residents to carry on looking after their gardens and shared spaces.

Hairdresser, Melanie McGillick

WHAT’S IN A NAME

Your help is needed for title of new community centres and hair salon Building work is well under way on two new community centres and a hair salon in the PFI communities – and residents are urged to help think of names for all of them. Prizes are up for grabs for winning suggestions, so get your thinking caps on! Hairdresser Melanie McGillick laid a brick at what is to be her new hairdressing salon, next to the new Crossley community centre, during a visit to the building site. Melanie’s Hair Emporium is moving from Kent Avenue where shops have suffered leaky ceilings and rising damp. The salon will stay open for business as usual until the move at

the end of the year. Melanie has been fully involved with the whole process and the project team thank her for her patience and co-operation. Melanie is offering a full makeover at her salon and the chance to cut the ribbon at the official opening. Great Places is offering mystery prizes for winning community centre suggestions in December. To enter either competition, please fill in the boxes on the back page, cut them out and pop them in to Melanie’s Hair Emporium, Kent Avenue, Crossley. Please don’t write your own name, just a contact telephone number.

10 miles at midnight Sandra Mellor, site welfare operative at Wates Living Space, did a 10-mile midnight walk for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice in Royton, Oldham. She completed the walk in 2 hours and 30 minutes and raised a whopping £250. Well done Sandra!

Sam’s work placement Local resident Sam Sina has been busy on a voluntary work placement as a trainee bricklayer with C&I Smith Ltd at Primrose Bank. Matt Hill from C&I Smith says of Sam: “He’s been doing a great job, he has completed tasks to a high standard and we will consider him for any suitable vacancies that come up.”

Your summer of litter picking and planting Crossley Planting Primrose Bank, Dew Way and Crossley have been looking blooming marvellous lately thanks to residents’ efforts to plant flowers and pick litter. During the summer holidays, scores of children and adults joined staff from Great Places to make their neighbourhoods really shine. Work fits in nicely with Oldham Council’s ambition to build a co-operative borough – with everybody doing their bit and everybody benefiting from a cleaner,

greener and safer place to live. Once litter was cleared up, Dew Way children decorated plant pots and planted vegetables and flowers to grow at home. Crossley residents planted flower displays in pots and hanging baskets for their gardens then tackled a flowerbed on Kent Avenue to brighten up the area. Primrose Bank residents also planted flower displays in pots and hanging baskets and are planning another session to plant a border outside the tenants’ hall.
