Fire safety in the home To prevent fire-related incidents occurring in your Great Places home, follow these top tips for keeping you and your loved ones safe.

Never smoke in bed!

If you’re feeling drowsy or have been drinking alcohol or taken prescription drugs, take extra care when smoking. It’s easy to fall asleep and not notice that a cigarette is still burning. Don’t light up if you need to lie down and never smoke in bed.

Chip pan fire safety

Around 16,000 domestic fires every year are started by chip pan fires. Use a deep-fat-fryer or cook your chips in the oven. Never put water on a chip pan fire and don’t tackle the fire yourself. Turn off the heat if it’s safe to do so. Get out, stay out and call 999.

Fit a smoke alarm

Safe summer BBQs

Ensure your barbecue is positioned on a flat surface well away from a shed or trees. Never leave the barbecue unattended and make sure the tap is turned off before changing the cylinder. It’s also a good idea to keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies. If you suspect a leak to the cylinder or pipe work, brush soapy water around the joints and watch for bubbles – tighten to fix but do not over-tighten.

A smoke alarm could save the lives of you and your family in a fire. All Great Places homes are fitted with a fire alarm. Check the batteries regularly, and if you believe there is a problem with your alarm, call the Great Places team on 0300 123 1966.

Don’t leave the stove unattended

More than half of accidental fires in the home are started in the kitchen. It is easy to be distracted while cooking and leave things unattended. Avoid cooking if you’re tired, have been drinking alcohol or taking medication that can make you drowsy.

Get a free home-fire-safety check

Did you know you can get a free home-fire-safety check? Call your local fire service on their general enquiries number to request a visit to fit smoke alarms. They will also provide advice on keeping your home and family as safe as possible.

Matt’s message

From Matt Harrison, Chief Executive of Great Places Housing Group

You wouldn’t know it from this typically changeable weather, but we are in the midst of the summer and many fantastic community events are taking place across our neighbourhoods for customers of all ages. It’s fantastic to hear our cover star Shannon Melling is making such a positive impression on the staff and fellow residents at Bluebell Court. Shannon’s enrolled on a Uniformed Services course at college and plans to pursue a career in the police force to help serve the community.

The Oldham office gets a fresh look!

Time for a new look... Have you noticed this issue of Springboard looks a bit different? That’s because we’ve shaken things up by refreshing our logo and branding! After a decade of using our original Great Places logo, we felt it was time for a change. We’ve kept our recognisable blue and green colours but updated the font to a simple, more contemporary design. You’ll see our new logo rolling out across the business on our letterheads, signs, name badges and vans over the next few months.

The tragic news of the fire at Grenfell Tower in London has dominated the headlines this summer. We’ve been working hard to ensure we’re doing everything we can to keep all customers safe in the event of a fire. While accidents do happen, there are things we can all do reduce the risk. You can read some of these on the inside front cover. You may notice that this issue of Springboard looks a little different. We’ve recently updated our logo and branding and plan to launch our new website in September. The new website has extra new features including an easier way to log your repairs and pay your rent. Read more about it in our guide on Page 15. I hope you all have a safe and happy summer and I’ll see you again in the autumn!

Blooming lovely! Barnardo’s Bay6 project has been awarded the Leyland In Bloom winner’s plaque (below). The staff and residents worked hard to produce their very own piece of blooming paradise! Bay6, run by Barnardo’s in partnership with Great Places, focuses on creating a culture of care and warmth, providing a safe environment for homeless 16-25 year olds in the South Ribble area.

Limitless youth group at Hawkshaw Court

Life lessons Limitless are a youth forum based at Langworthy Cornerstone comprising of 13 young volunteers working to improve the community through social action projects. The volunteers recently visited the tenants at Hawkshaw Court to learn more about their lives and join them in a game of bingo! The tenants enjoyed sharing their fascinating life stories with the Limitless team.

Gary Still a gold and silver medalist

Gary’s golden glory for Great Britain A massive congratulations to Leyland Bay 6 customer Gary Still who scooped a double medal win for Great Britain at the Malaga 2017 World Transplant Games. Gary won gold with a heroic discuss throw of 26.67 metres beating his nearest competitor by five metres. Gary also won a silver medal in the shot put and participated in Team GB’s basketball team.

Pomona’s blue sky thinking! Service Manager Claire Alcock threw down the gauntlet to customers and staff at Pomona Gardens to refresh their training room. This was a great opportunity for customers and staff to work together to get the job done, under the watchful eye of our in-house painter and decorator Warren Chambers. Customers Paul Chadwick and Steven Atherton rose to the challenge and worked tirelessly over the two days to brighten up the scheme. A big thank you to all staff who pitched in and at Pomona for their hard work.

It was Gary’s first competitive event and the pressure was high. He said: “I felt nervous, we all did at first, but we overcame it and did better than we thought we would.” Gary, 23, underwent a heart transplant in 2015 after suffering heart failure, and has used the focus of athletics to aid his physical recovery, training on the field and in the gym, maintaining a healthy diet to push himself step-by-step. In 2016, Gary became homeless so moved into the Bay 6 Project, a Supported Housing Service for young homeless people aged 16-25 that’s managed by Barnardo’s in partnership with Great Places. Gary also recently competed at the North Lanarkshire National Transplant Games 2017 winning an impressive haul of three gold and two silver medals - well done Gary!

Personal development training motivates at Lorna Lodge Residents at Lorna Lodge, one of our Independence and Wellbeing projects in Wythenshawe, attended a Progress to Success workshop delivered by trainers M&O Ltd. Interactive bite-sized sessions on parenting and employment skills were enthusiastically delivered to our seven residents, who joined in with the fun. The crèche (pictured right) was very popular so play worker Hannah had her work cut out cleaning up after the six one to three year old children in her care! One of attendees was expectant mother but that didn’t stop her getting involved and learning new skills. The day was a great success with one resident saying:“It was great; workshops like this build my confidence and motivate me to do more in life.” Another added: “I’m really looking forward to attending the full session as I need things like this to help me stay focused.” Employment and Skills Manager Nicolette Aydin said: “We want to encourage our customers to believe in themselves and know their strengths. It's great to provide them with the skills to help them work towards their goals in preparation for living independently on the scheme or if they move on.”

6

www.greatplaces.org.uk

Young parents at our Lorna Lodge project recently benefited from an interactive Progress to Success workshop, organised by Great Places’ Employment and Skills Manager Nicolette Aydin. "Each resident received a ‘Believe! Achieve! Succeed!’ wristband from the trainers whose aim was to encourage attendees to consider their future aspirations and take small actions now. It was great to see them proudly wearing their wrist bands and discussing their goals with one another after the session had ended." "We currently have five residents working with the Social Investment Team including one currently undertaking CSCS training in preparation for her painting and decorating apprenticeships. Another is attending barista training before starting work experience at Manchester Airport. They are all amazing!” For more information on how to get involved, please email nicolette.aydin@greatplaces.org.uk

“Great Places and the staff here have helped me so much! They gave me support and counselling with the passing of my mum and have helped me to live independently.”

Young star serves up communitry success Eighteen year old Shannon Melling, a resident at Bluebell Court in St Helens, is an inspirational role model for young people wanting to achieve success through hard work and determination. Since Shannon moved in to her home in May 2016, she’s successfully learned to live independently by managing her first tenancy. She’s gained invaluable new budgeting and priority spending skills, buying essential items for her flat and saving up for her plan to move on. Shannon’s also suffered a close family bereavement: “With my mum passing away, I had a lot to deal with emotionally, and becoming independent at the same time put me under even more pressure.” Shortly after moving in, Shannon enrolled at St Helens College on a Uniformed Services course to gain the skills required for a career in the Merseyside Police. This course has improved her confidence and that reflects in all parts of her life. She’s also now attending a Social Care course with the St Helens Chamber of Commerce to enable her to work with

Shannon Melling: a model customer at home autistic children prior to joining the Police. Shannon’s dedication to her studies is incredible, and she has high praise for the staff on the scheme: “Great Places and the staff here have helped me so much! They gave me support and counselling with the passing of my mum and have helped me live independently.” She summarises her experience at the Great Places scheme: “A million words in summed up in one is ‘AMAZING’. I love the staff and the place and would recommend anyone here to grab all the support and opportunities with both hands.” We’re all incredibly proud of everything Shannon has achieved in the community. Next Step home looking bright and fresh Main picture (left to right): Michael Ainsworth, Ged Cooper, Jay Chavda and Ged Finn relaxing in the lounge

The Next Step project in Manchester has had the painters and decorators in for a major refurbishment of all communal areas, with customers and staff delighted with the results. The refurbishment, the largest of its kind in any of our supported housing schemes, has taken three months to complete, with the final stage of preserving the original 100-year-old tiled floor in the entrance foyer to be completed soon. The communal lounge has been completely transformed with the walls painted fresh blue and new comfortable stylish furniture and vinyl flooring added, all helping to create a clean and relaxing space where our customers can watch TV and socialise.

8

www.greatplaces.org.uk

Doris Chisunka, Project Support Worker at Great Places, has noted the positive impact the project has had on both customers and staff: “Our customers love the bright, spacious and fresh bathrooms, saying this change has helped them relax. Having a shower is exciting in a nice and clean environment.” The refurbishment has an added bonus of providing a service to other agencies. All the residents have commented on how cheerful the colour scheme is, and how it helps reduce their stress and anxiety. Teresa Wright, Support Coordinator said: “Agencies who come to the project can’t believe it’s the same building. When they look around and see the improvements, they want to refer us to their clients.”

A trip down memory lane Muriel Donoghue, a Christine Court resident nearly 40 years ago, has returned as the new Concierge. The scheme has changed considerably during that time. Muriel grew up in Ireland with 10 brothers and sisters. At 18, she left Ireland to seek her fortune with her new husband in Australia. She had an eventful seven years in “the land of milk and honey” giving birth to her two daughters, Michelle and Samantha. Unfortunately Muriel was in an unhappy relationship so decided to go back home to Ireland. She couldn’t settle though so her mother suggested she start a new life in England. Muriel and her two daughters temporarily lived with her sister in Old Trafford before moving into a rented room for £8 a week: “It was five rooms in one; a bed in one corner and a sink, table and chairs, wardrobe, couch and a cot in the other three.” They shared a kitchen and bathroom with two other families, but when the landlord decided to sell the house, Muriel and her children were left homeless. In the hope of finding a new home, Muriel approached Trafford Council in Stretford but they were unable to provide accommodation. The council worker did though suggest she contact St Christopher’s Home for Girls (the previous site of Christine Court) managed by the Waifs and Strays Society. Muriel’s room was small, consisting of just a single bed and bunk bed, and the communal kitchen was shared with two or three other families. The rules were strict; residents had to be in bed before 10pm and children were not allowed to be left alone. Afer pursuing Trafford Council for improved accommodation, Muriel and the girls were offered a house in Altrincham.

10

Muriel welcomes you to Christine Court

“I didn’t really have anyone to talk to when we lived there; no support other than a roof over our heads. Residents get a lot more support at Christine Court today.” The staff at St Christopher’s provided them with basic furniture and food vouchers, and Muriel lived happily in that house until 2011. She worked for 28 years at Manchester City Council for the children in care service; a wonderful career helping others. Muriel’s time at St Christopher’s shaped her life: “I didn’t really have anyone to talk to when we lived there; no support other than a roof over our heads. Residents get a lot more support at Christine Court now. “Until you come to a place like this, you don’t know your strengths and weaknesses. It’s character building and sets you up for the rest of your life.”

“It was brilliant, I really enjoyed it. My favourite part was learning about the greenhouse and planting and maintaining everything in there. I like going out and seeing how everything is growing, I check on things every day.”

Docherty’s digging the garden scene Docherty House has started work on a gardening project with Sow the City, an award winning social enterprise based in Manchester. Sow the City’s workshop at Docherty House encourages residents to take ownership of their garden, including the growing of fruit and vegetables. The first workshop taught residents how to build a raised wooden bed, while the second workshop encouraged them to build their own without support from the workshop leader. Feeling confident, the residents then constructed a freestanding bird table, and a variety of vegetables were planted in the raised beds; green beans, tomatoes, cabbages and potatoes. Residents have also now planted fruit and vegetables in other areas of the garden and greenhouse, and learned to compost, water and maintain the garden. They’ve found the project both educational and fun.

Staff and customers working hard

Stars Awards winner, Louis Kirkwood said: “It was brilliant, I really enjoyed it. My favourite part was learning about the greenhouse and planting and maintaining everything in there. I like going out and seeing how everything is growing, I check on things every day.” Jennifer Smith agreed, saying “It’s been really interesting. The part I enjoyed most was building the raised beds and using the drill. It’s great to have something to keep me occupied and give me something to do. I love watching the seeds grow into plants, working as a team, and it’s a great way to exercise and keep fit.” The garden at Docherty is looking beautiful, full of flowers, fruit and vegetables. The ongoing project has been a great success, and with regular maintenance, the residents will continue to enjoy the fruits of their labour! Established in 2009 with a few packets of seeds and some compost, Sow the City are the leading specialist food-growing company in Manchester.

Our latest

By Insight – our customer scrutiny group Earlier this year, Insight reviewed the way Great Places improve and invest in customers’ homes, such as fitting new kitchens and bathrooms. Although customer feedback shows they were mostly satisfied with their experience, it was clear that some improvements could be made. The service has undergone a number of changes over the past two years, so the group also felt it was a good time to find out how those changes were working out. This was Insight’s fifth scrutiny review. The aim of the review was to try to understand why customers having a new kitchen or bathroom fitted might feel dissatisfied, so improvements could be made to the service. Insight reviewed service performance through customer feedback to identify any areas to be looked at in more detail. The group heard presentations from service staff and surveyed customers who’d had a new kitchen or bathroom fitted during the last 12 months. Once the review was complete, Insight identified a number of areas for improvement.

Areas identified for improvement include: • communicating a programme of work so customers know when they can expect investment work to be carried out • gaining a greater understanding of customers’ experiences of the service • inspecting all work and ensure snagging is completed within a reasonable time Insight members attended the Great Places Board Meeting in July to feed back their scrutiny review findings. The Board agreed to all of the group’s recommendations, a plan was devised and review arranged for December 2017. In May, Insight also heard how their recommendations from the aids and adaptations service review were progressing. Insight was eespecially impressed with the arrangements made to improve customer communications. The scrutiny group welcomes new members, so if you’re curious about scrutinising services, feel you have the right skills, and would like to contribute and learn new skills along the way, contact Tracy Gregory on 0161 447 5020 or email tracy.gregory@greatplaces.org.uk.
