Great Workplaces on the March Worldwide
Report 01 Introduction
Introduction The world is making progress toward great workplaces for all. The best are getting better around the globe, and the number of great, high-trust workplaces has nearly doubled since 2011. That’s the good news as Great Place to Work‰ and Fortune announce the sixth annual list of the World’s Best Multinational Workplaces. These top global employers, led for the fourth straight year by #1 Google, have seen their levels of employee trust, pride and camaraderie increase over the past six years. What’s more, in 22 of the 30 countries for which Great Place to Work has data going back to 2010, as well as in Central America and the Caribbean, the best national workplaces have improved their trust levels as well. And the number of organizations globally that meet our standard of workplace greatness—as measured by employee survey scores and our Best Workplaces rankings—has risen from roughly 2,200 six years ago to close to 4,100 today. “The near-doubling of workplaces globally that meet our certification standard is an encouraging sign that the Great Place to Work For ALL movement is catching on around the world,” said Kim Peters, Executive Vice President of Great Place to Work’s Certification program. “Regardless of where they’re located or what they offer, more and more organizations realize that high-trust workplaces—where every employee’s potential is realized—are good for business and good for our global society.”

Report 03
The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.
Background and Findings
Martin Luther King Jr.
Background and Findings “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice,” Martin Luther King, Jr. once said. His comment applies to work as well. Human beings have moved from a long era of enslaving each other, to an industrial age where workers were free but often abused, to the adoption of workplace rights in the 19th and 20th centuries. In the 21st century, there has been growing recognition that organizations, employees and society all benefit when workplace cultures do much more than meet basic labor standards such as safe conditions and wage and hour laws.
Precisely those features of trust, pride and camaraderie are what we at Great Place to Work® measure with our 58-question Trust Index© Employee Survey. And the survey results have been encouraging since we began tracking and ranking the World’s Best Multinational Workplaces in 2011. The World’s Best Trust Index© benchmark—the average survey score of the 25 Best Multinationals—has edged upward over the past six years, from 81 to 83 on a scale of 100. See Figure 1.

In some cases, the increase in the national Trust Index© benchmark has been minimal. But no country saw its Best Workplaces trust level dip below 5 percent. At the same time, trust levels jumped at least five percent in 11 countries, led by a 21 percent surge at the Best Workplaces in Poland. In short, the best around the globe are getting better.

That’s not the only good news when it comes to great workplaces globally. Roughly three-quarters of the countries Great Place to Work has data for going back to 2010 have recorded higher trust levels in their national best workplaces. The best workplaces in Central America and the Caribbean also have seen their Trust Index© benchmark increase. See Figure 2.

Great News “Beyond The Best” By definition, there are a limited number of “Best” workplaces. But at Great Place to Work, we believe any and every company can be great. And we have begun recognizing organizations “beyond the best” that nonetheless achieve our standards of workplace greatness. The Certification program we operate in the United States honors companies at which seven out of ten employees rate their cultures highly on the Trust Index©. And when we examined our data over the past six years, we discovered another hopeful sign about high-trust workplaces worldwide: the number of companies that qualify as great workplaces has roughly doubled. In particular, some 2,200 workplaces around the globe hit our Certification standard or were recognized in one of our national Best Workplaces lists in 2011. In 2016, the number had risen to roughly 4,100. See Figure 3. These workplaces include organizations that are officially Great Place to Work®-Certified™, such as Delta Air Lines, social reviews provider Yelp, and consumer products maker The Clorox Company. They also include many other workplaces worldwide where a national certification program is not yet in place, but that nonetheless proved themselves to be great in the eyes of their employees. In total, the number of people at a great workplace globally in 2016 is roughly 6.9 million. Although that’s less than 1 percent of the estimated 3 billion workers in the world, it is nonetheless progress from the approximately 6.1 million people employed at great workplaces six years ago.

Great Workplaces on the March Worldwide
Report Better Business. Better World. This global expansion of great workplaces is driven by a number of forces. Among the most powerful is business leaders recognizing that trust fuels performance—that an organization innovates and operates best when all its people bring their best selves to work each day. Evidence along these lines continues to pile up. Consider recent research by scholar Herb Nold, Professor of Business Administration at Polk State College in Winter Haven, Florida. Nold examined 28 publicly-traded best workplaces identified by Great Place to Work® and compared them to a matched set of industry peers. He found that the great workplaces achieved superior results over a period of several years in: ** Operating income per employee ** Operating margin
and people’s growing willingness to disclose all aspects of their lives are rewarding good employers and punishing less-than-good ones. There’s also a global push by people for greater physical, emotional and spiritual health. People demanding more wellbeing is forcing companies to make their workplaces better. In fact, the World’s Best Workplaces have improved most in the area of employee wellbeing. Of all 58 questions on the Trust Index© survey, the one with the greatest increase at the 25 World’s Best over the past six years is “People are encouraged to balance their work life and their personal life.” See Figure 4.

** Growth rate ** Return on assets ** Tobin’s Q “The results of this study provide empirical data suggesting that firms that successfully cultivate cultures that are strong in fairness, credibility, respect (collectively trust), pride, and camaraderie significantly outperform comparable firms in several key areas; value, operating effectiveness, and growth,” Nold wrote.1 To explain the success of high-trust cultures, Nold pointed to the way these workplaces enable collaboration and knowledge sharing. He noted that many companies invest heavily in leadership, technology and systems—such as business software tools and lean management methods—that should facilitate knowledge sharing. But these initiatives require a climate of trust to truly facilitate access to stored knowledge and improve organizational performance. In addition to growing awareness of research like Nold’s, other forces are accelerating the Great Place to Work For ALL movement globally. Another is recognition of the way high-trust workplaces are central to innovation. In short, employees are more likely to risk sharing novel ideas in a climate in which they feel a measure of security and are proud of what they do. In addition, collaboration, which is increasingly central to effective innovation efforts, is fueled by friendships among co-workers. What’s more, social media tools like Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram—and the public’s use of them—are increasing visibility into the inner workings of organizations. The other top-5 improving statements at the World’s Best indicate the kinds of ways great workplaces around the globe are improving people’s lives. Eight of 10 employees at the World’s Best now feel encouraged to balance work and life beyond work. Even more celebrate special events and experience a psychologically healthy workplace. Fair promotions are on the rise, as is a work climate free of the kind of backstabbing behavior that can ruin a workday and carry over to stress at home. Indeed, the better days at work at growing number of organizations around the world have a ripple effect. Employees at these workplaces come home to be better parents. Better friends. Better community members. Better citizens of their countries. Better members of the human race. The Great Place to Work For ALL movement is advancing across the globe. Great Workplaces on the March Worldwide
Report 05 Methodology
Methodology Globally more than 6,000 organizations surveyed in 2015 and 2016 with Great Place to Work. Together, these companies have more than 9.1 million employees, making the annual Great Place to Work study one of the largest of its kind in the world.
Selection Criteria
To be eligible for the World’s Best Multinational Workplaces list, a company must apply to – and be accepted on – a national Best Workplace list. To be on a list, we assess the results of two studies: the Trust Index© Employee Survey and the Culture Audit© Management Questionnaire. Two-thirds of a company’s workplace culture assessment is based on the employee survey; one-third is based on the company’s policies and practices, as measured in the Culture Audit©. Hundreds of multinational corporations participated globally in our surveys. Approximately one thousand multinational subsidiaries appeared on one of our national Best Workplaces Lists, conducted in countries ranging from Brazil to Turkey to Korea. From that pool of companies, the 25 World’s Best Multinational Workplaces have been selected.
** At least 40% of workforce (or 5,000 employees) must be based outside of home country
About the Authors
** Appear on at least 5 national Best Workplaces lists ** Have at least 5,000 employees worldwide
** Extra points given based on the number of countries where a company surveys employees with the Great Place to Work® Trust Index© ** Extra points given based on the percentage of a company’s workforce represented by all Great Place to Work® surveys globally
