While meandering through the countryside along the Delaware River, with its arresting views and unsullied air, it’s very possible you’ll work up an appetite. What’s available to you? A burger? Pizza? A good steak? Sure, these traditional favorites are always available, but Delaware County’s culinary disposition is far more expansive than one might think. In recent years, there has formed a clutch of establishments that bring with them an international flair. In the winter months at Kimchee Harvest Kitchen at East Branch Farms (Highway 30, Roxbury, New York, 12474 607.326.6177) Arthur Warren whips up made-to-order ramen with the freshest of ingredients. Often the broth is a simple, yet delicious, Korean Miso piled high with vegetables from their farm, East Branch Farms. If you desire a protein as well, the options can be anything from pork belly or monkfish to little neck clams, just to name a few. Come sit inside a cozy room and watch Arthur roll out the dough for the pasta on a hand crank machine and prepare your bowls with some of their signature Kimchi. Complimentary barley tea in a hot urn on the counter is available for you while you wait.

In the milder months of plenty, rice bowls with assorted seasonal veggies and greens, a larger selection of proteins, and a variety of freshly made dressings for even more flavor are offered. Arthur enjoys making great tasting meals for people and a point of pride is partly its simplicity. In an unassuming corner of Sidney, there is a small gem of a restaurant called Bavaria (27 Division Street, Sidney, NY 13838, 607.206.6927), serving traditional German cuisine. The story goes that after hosting a very large family dinner together, Ulrike and her daughter Stephanie started entertaining the idea of opening a restaurant together. The menu boasts a host of German specialties including

schnitzel, sauerbraten, tangy red cabbage, sides of dumplings or spaetzle, homemade pretzels, and of course, killer apfelstrudel and Black Forest cake. Stephanie does all the in-house baking while her mother cooks the main meals during service. The interior is a mellow, modern atmosphere in gray and white with fairy lights hung. Wine and beer are also served. They are soon to open a sprawling beer garden for the milder months. The Tulip and the Rose Cafe (435 Main Street, Franklin, NY 13775, 607.829.4040), is a must for its atmosphere and its food alike. Their cuisine spans the entire southern coast of Europe from Sicily to Cyrpus, and eastward through India and Malaysia. The dishes

are characterized by creamy textures, richly fragrant spices, garlic, olives, chilis, and sweet sauces. The weekend brunches cover everything from Benedict’s to Cypriot breakfast with Halloumi cheese, or a Javenese dish with sweet Asian noodles. They also do weekend tapas events from 5-8pm, followed by a dinner menu. On a cold or rainy day, few cultures know how to warm you to the bones like the English. A welcome addition to Delaware County cuisine has been The Bull and Garland (760 Main Street, Hobart, NY 13788, 607.538.3006). Oliver and Melissa Pycroft have transformed an old residential home into a lovely pub and Inn. Sitting on the corner of the main street, a large white house behind a picket fence with string lights running along the porch project a shimmering invite to come in. In the main dining room, there is a fireplace that blooms cheer in the cheeks of the people who dine. The menu is made up of food that fills with a touch of the gourmet, including savory meat pies with buttery crusts, bangers and mash, fish and chips, hanger steaks and cassoulet. They have specialty cocktails every night, along with a stellar beer and wine selection. In the greener months, you may choose to eat on the porch or yard and often times they offer riverside music out back. The inn is also steps away from the rail trail for a sunset stroll before or after you dine. Since your trek through the Himalayas that foods + products

year, you have lamented the fact that you will likely never again sink into the warmth and flavor of a Tibetan Momo, right?....No? No matter. Save the plane fare and still get your fix at Catskill Momos (191 Main Street, Delhi, NY 13753, 607.746.2233) of authentic handmade momos made by Wang Dak ”Jimmy” Jigmey. Simply put, Momos are delicious dumplings. Jimmy is Tibetan born, raised in India, Nepal, and has been in the U.S. for decades. His approach to this universally lovable food is a combination of classic and innovative. Momos are a social food for any occasion and can accommodate most dietary restrictions. If you

want something traditional you might try the Momo soup, meat or vegetables in a flavorful broth, almost like soup dumplings. Some more innovative dishes of Jimmy’s are the chickpea momos, which come with two sauces, and chocolate momos, a rich dumpling dessert. Catskill Momos is a great place for ordering a few different items and sharing. The restaurant is bright and casual with prompt and friendly service, and Jimmy is always there with a smile on his face, making sure that you are enjoying yourself. Greenane Farms (196 County Highway 10, Meridale, NY 13806, 607.746.8878) produces

natural meats and vegetables, and also hosts a Mexican restaurant on site. Tanya originally hails from Mexico City, but has created a rustic and inviting dining experience out of her and her husband’s barn here in the Great Western Catskills. Using their pasture raised meat and vegetables, she creates authentic Mexican dishes that are off-the-charts good. Hot freshly made tortilla chips with salsa, a variety of tacos, burritos, Enchiladas Verde, fajitas, and Molcajete - hearty meat dishes with cactus and whole scallions baked and served in stone mortars. The food served here will satisfy absolutely all Mexican cuisine devotees. It’s BYOB, but they do offer Horchata, Mexican juices, and sodas. There is also outdoor seating in nice weather. Trattoria Locale (520 Main Street, Margaretville, NY 12455, 845.464.5305), the newly opened Italian restaurant in Margaretville, is exactly what the name suggests. A deeply intimate space with just 50 seats, Daryl DeBeech and Amy Parks have created a bright and easy room, perfect for burrowing in with some of Daryl’s locally sourced dishes with handmade pastas. Winning dishes such as penne pomodoro and chicken parmigiana are sturdy standards next to a fresh take on others like a cacciatora with rabbit and a salmon puttanesca. A sprawling back deck offers a tranquil outdoor spot with a river view. In 1986, Mustafa Sav bought himself a

castle in Walton, NY. It’s an armory to be more precise, where he opened a restaurant inside, Castle on the Delaware (139 Stockton Avenue, Walton, NY 13856, 917.348.7890). Over the years, Mustafa has lived in his home country of Turkey as well as Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, where he attended culinary school. It is hard to describe the vast space that is the dining room of the castle, aside from the fact that it seats 640 and has stadium-seated balconies on either side, which were once used to view top ranking soldiers on horseback. A stage has been built and they often have a wide variety of performances and events best looked up on either their website or Facebook. As for the food, on regular nights of service, the castle offers an eclectic international fare and something appealing for most everyone. From blue crab stuffed mushrooms and German red cabbage to Prime Rib and Baklava, it does not disappoint. They sometimes offer themed cuisine nights of specific regions, comedy shows, karaoke, live bands, and community events. It is an epic space not to be passed by. This list of impressive restaurants is but a sample of what Delaware County has to offer as far as international eating goes. Check out greatwesterncatskills.com for the full list of culinary delights, happy eating!

There is something about the task of harvesting sugar from the tree that can be deeply satisfying. Many days are spent collecting the maple tree sap, which leads to hours and hours of boiling for just a small amount of dark liquid sugar. Tree Juice Maple Syrup (59 Rider Hollow Road, Arkville, NY 12406, 845.245.8975) started with Jake Fairbairn and Ryan Annetts after a very simple thought that came to them when purchasing maple syrup for their gelato business. “Why are we buying this? We should just make some.” With that, a love affair grew alongside a very industrious business. The business of making maple is however, easier said than done. It is a short season in Delaware County, which means bursts of activity and making sure that the syrup maker is always ready for when the sap might flow. They cannot simply tap trees, run lines and boil once there’s enough. The equipment is sensitive and must be disconnected in cold weather, only to be reattached again when it seems that the sap is flowing. The lines must be constantly checked and fixed as the squir-

rels eat through them for their own sweet fix, and the sugar content of the sap fluctuates and needs monitoring to get a good syrup. Sap must be boiled within 24 hours, so timing is key, and the makers do their best to keep everything ready for harvesting. The collected sap is then poured into a holding tank where it is put through a reverse osmosis machine to concentrate the sugars and boil more efficiently, in this case, in a wood-fired evaporator. “A lot of bigger commercial syrup companies now use propane and oil fueled evaporators. We’ll never do that at Tree Juice,” explains Ryan. They believe strongly in the added flavor of a wood fire boil as well as the renewable resource and the overall health of the forest and their sugar bush. “Thinning the forest out gives the healthy trees room to spread,” he adds. “The more of a canopy they

have, the healthier the tree, the more they photosynthesize, and the more sugar they make.” The trials and tribulations of a fairly new business give birth to creative solutions. Tree Juice started the very first Maple CSA. With a small or full share, you get a discounted price for paying up front and choose when and where you wish to pick up, and what grade you would like. They have also started buying sap from some much smaller local farms for a much better price than they would get from big companies. It’s cash in the small farmer’s hand in exchange for an easier time keeping up with demand and a contingency for if there is slow production on a given year. With fast growth in their business in the last couple of years, Tree Juice has been able to hire more people to the company and give them shares in the business, which is no small thing. Jake and Ryan feel a heartening responsibility toward the families they are feeding, and the community at large. This year they will launch a tree-planting program, which will ensure the longevity of their sap bush and its economic imprint on the area for the years to come. Along with offering various grades of syrup, Tree Juice has also launched a variety of flavored maple syrups that are seriously to die for. A smoky bourbon barrel aged syrup, foods + products

Looking to get some for yourself? You can find them for purchase at most places around here. The Home Goods store in Margaretville, Union Grove Distillery (which also makes a maple spirit made with Tree Juice Maple), Kimchee Harvest Kitchen, and many of the

farm stands along State Highway 28 stock the company’s products. Follow Tree Juice Maple Syrup on Facebook and Instagram for information on periodic open houses where they’ll give you a tour and the lay of the land. Tree Juice, is of course, just one example of a plethora of sap houses in Delaware County, many of whom have farm stands and tours, or are happy for you to just drop in. Or you can just follow the web of blue sap lines in the forest and see where those veins of sweetness lead you.

Not only is Delaware County becoming a culinary destination because of the incredible access to fresh food and the surge of new restaurants opening, it’s also beloved because of the abundance of specialty food purveyors who call the Great Western Catskills home. In addition to our local cheeses, spices, maple products, distilled beverages and more being available at our farm stores, stands, markets, supermarkets and restaurants, we also have a few specialty shops focused on meat and fish. Not only can you buy incredible cuts and perfectly prepared meals, you can also talk to your butcher and fishmonger to get inspired about food. These experts are as passionate as they are knowledgeable and love to introduce visitors to the best of what Delaware County has to offer. You can also find these skilled professionals offering

talks, demonstrations, and workshops that allow any inspired person to truly get to know their food. Andersen Morse is the butcher at the Andes General Store (103 Main Street, Andes, 845.676.6091). Before returning to Delaware County, Andersen worked at Western Daughter in Denver and before that had worked and trained at Fleisher Butcher, where he also served as an instructor for their apprenticeship program. Those skills come in handy as he now offers demonstrations and educational classes. Andersen can be found at the Andes General Store offering standard cuts of pork, beef and lamb directly from local farms in the area. Stop by to discuss what you are preparing and get the perfect cut of meat for your meal. Visit butcherofdelaware. com to find out more about workshops and classes. Solinsky’s Meats (103 Main Street, Stamford, 607.652.2333) is owned and operated by the team of Michael Solyn and Caitlan Clare Grady. Solinsky’s is an adorable delicatessen storefront specializing in charcuterie, smoked meats and sausages that are available at their shop as well as wholesale. They provide

meat to local restaurants like Wayside Cider (55 Redden Lane, Andes) and the shop is also a certified USDA meat processing facility. Stop by Solinsky’s to find ever-evolving assortment of locally raised grass-fed meats, showcasing the quality and abundance of the region. Solinskly’s combines great knowledge with a great love for the farming communities in the Great Western Catskills. Catskills Regional Harvest (27905 State Highway 28, Andes, 607.427.9848) is a farm store offering products from over 120 local and regional producers. It’s also a seafood and whole animal butcher shop offering pasture-raised meat from local farms like Evans

Visit the Delaware County Foodworks Facebook page to find out more about the classes and events. If you are up for an adventure, consider visiting Delaware Delicacies Smoke House (420 Rhodes Rd, Hancock, 607.673.4443) where you will meet owner and operator Ray Turner. While finding the Smoke House, which is nestled in the woods and accessed via dirt roads, may take some time and commitment, it will be worth the trip if you are a fan of fresh fish, meats and smoked eel, the smoke house specialty, sourced from an eel weir on their property’s river bend. The smoking is done in house as well. Come spend the day at Delaware Delicacies to discover their smoked meats and fish while meeting some of the fantastic locals who make up this great region. The above-mentioned destinations are just a few of the incredible meat and fish purveyors where visitors can shop while having a truly unique experience. You have stumbled upon a place of abundance. It takes only a drive through to see it. Golden cornfields swaying, emerald chains of leafy greens set for picking, orchard trees weighted heavy with their ripe fruit, vineyard grapes sitting swollen on their stems in the sun make it a place of plenty. A place to indulge. The sweet spot. So, in the late afternoon, you may want to hike up to the top of that hill, spread your picnic blanket smooth to set your plates with cheese, that bottle, and don’t forget some local sweets. In Margaretville, there is a small shop on Main Street called Catskill Candies and Confections (746 Main Street, Margaretville,

NY 12455, 845.586.6100). Raelene Bond and her daughter are a passionate family team. They make handmade chocolates, truffles, and fudges, some of which are vegan friendly. Their flavors are seasonally inspired and they have creative combinations for the curious palette, as well as traditional delights for chocolate lovers. Chocolate toffee bark, pecan clusters, and dark chocolate-coated strawberries are examples of some of the delicacies perched on their shelves. Within the case at the counter, the classic truffle flavors such as mocha java sit snuggly next to bright curiosities like white chocolate lemon. They also have for purchase a small selection of non-chocolate candies including gumdrops, cherry sours, and Pixy Stix. Cow Tale Treats (15 Pine Street, Deposit, NY 13754, 607.467.2253) is also a small gem. Here, they offer freshly baked items daily, such as bagels and muffins, as well as homemade pies, cakes, cinnamon buns, cookies, and brownies. They do special order cakes, cupcakes, and cake pops for parties, and even offer lunch food during business hours.

At Suzi’s Bakeshop and Cafe (3 W. Main Street, Sidney, NY 13838, 607.563.9050),), you can enjoy even more sweet treats, as well as hearty breakfasts and lunches daily. They offer the most beautiful made-to-order cakes decorated in amazing styles for any celebration and momentous cupcakes that will make your mouth water, along with cannolis, bundt cakes, cream puffs, cheesecakes, fruit-filled croissants, macaroons, and meringues. The array of what Sue Decker offers is sure to satisfy the most particular of sugar lovers. Giant gummies, chocolate frogs, Chuckles, Fun Dips, Pop Rocks, candy cigarettes, Dum Dums, and a wall of salt water taffy in every imaginable flavor. Newly opened, As You Wish Designs and Gifts (38 West Street #5, Walton, NY 13856, 607.865.2993) stockpiles classic and vintage candies of large selection of brands and types. Shelves covered in small novelties such as action figures, Silly String, and toy hatching eggs, line the front. In the back there is a room filled with any party favor you might want from colorful paper plates and cups to streamers, and balloons.

In the middle of those two rooms is where all the sweet stuff sits. Get your shopping cart ready.... The Bakery (167 East Front Street, Hancock, 607.637.2253). “Everything except donuts” is their motto, and they stand true to it. Fresh breads, baked goods, special occasion and wedding cakes, all of their products are made with real sugar, never corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, or preservatives. The space, built out by the husband and wife team that own and operate it entirely themselves, consists of a bright room that’s perfect for a slow morning awakening with coffee, the paper, and a treat, or an afternoon nudge with more of the same. These are just a handful of examples of what Delaware County’s toothsome bakers and makers have in store that are sure to have you licking sugar off your fingers in satisfied delight.

While not be in the primary business of making sweet treats, these restaurants below do often have a selection of great deserts and sweet things available. Visit these or any of the other great places to get your sugar fix in Delaware County. Blue Bee Cafe

Photo: Hobart Book Village in Hobart, NY. By Lisa Wisely.

“Why on Earth are there so many book stores in one little town?” is not an uncommon question for visitors who stumble upon the somewhat sleepy, but equally adorable, town of Hobart, also known as the Book Village. Located between Bloomville and Stamford, Hobart is a hidden gem of a destination; a sweet small town complete with friendly faces, delightful shops, galleries, places to wander the natural world and great food and drink options. Even with all this and more, it is most identified by being the place that boasts to be the home of several truly special collections of books and those who love to sell them. Inspired by the Book Village of Hay-On Wye in Wales, Don Dales welcomed fellow entrepreneurs to come to Hobart and open stores in his empty buildings, thus beginning the dream of creating a literature lover’s enclave in the Catskills. There are currently five independent shops that work collectively to beget this bookish vision and even host a highly regarded and extremely popular Festival of Women Writers (hobartfestivalofwomenwriters.com), which takes place every September.

It’s not just a town of book stores, it’s a cultural hot spot and community gathering ground, offering up several arts shows, book signings, author readings and lectures throughout the year. The most recent addition to the Book Village is Creative Corner Books (607 Main Street, Hobart, 607.386.2525) which was opened by Kathy and George Duyer in 2016. The store has a clear DIY spirit, offering a wide selection of new, used and vintage cookbooks, craft books and other do-it-your-

self selections as well as a bevy of gift items. Creative Corner also offers a variety of demonstrations and workshops, free sewing classes for kids and much more. Blenheim Hill Books (698 Main Street, Suite A, Hobart, 607.538.9222) Owners Barbara Balliet and Cheryl Clarke carefully curate thousands of titles at reasonable prices ranging from mysteries and suspense, women’s studies, poetry and the children’s book section is always a big draw. Celebrating their 15th year on Main Street,

25

Wm. H. Adams’ Antiquarian Bookshop (602 Main Street, Hobart, 607.538.9080) offers a specialized selection, concentrating on books about theology, Greek classics, history, art, science and natural history with rare and signed editions on hand. Butternut Valley Books (615 Main Street, Hobart, 607.538.3103), is the passion project of Dennis Lauchman and Rose Marie Richards, offering books on a wide variety of subjects that would intrigue everyone from the seasoned collector to the casual reader. Butternut Valley Books also offers some great pulp fiction paperbacks as an array of ephemera such as rare prints and exquisite maps of the world. The largest of the five stores in square footage is Liberty Rock Books (678 Main Street, Hobart, 607.538.1760), owned and operated by John and Jim Mahoney and Tom Liotta. One can get lost in the deep shelves that house up to some 50,000 books. In addition to their fantastic selection of titles ranging from history to children to popular culture, Liberty Rock Books also offers vintage postcards and well-maintained, reasonably priced Jazz records and CD’s. Wondering when the best time to come to Hobart is? Well, it’s anytime, but consider

It might seem a strange idea to head to the mountains to go boating, but the Great Western Catskills has fans of recreation on the water covered. Here are just a few of the ways for you to enjoy the crystal-clear waterways of Delaware County.

Visit the adorable town of Halcottsville to find the lakefront oasis of Susan Pleasant Pheasant Farm (1 Bragg Hollow Road, Halcottsville, 607.326.4266). In addition to offering canoe, kayak and paddle board rentals, Susan’s Pleasant Pheasant is a comfortable and adorable inn. Leave from their launch site to explore Lake Wakawaka. The canoes and kayaks are free for their overnight guests, with special rates for groups and steam cleaning so that you can use their kayaks in the Delaware County reservoirs.

A major feature of the Catskill Region is the 1600-square-mile New York City Watershed, encompassing six large reservoirs. This area supplies more than a billion gallons of water a day to some nine million people. Two of these reservoirs, the Pepacton and the Cannonsville, are in Delaware County. They are both open to non-motorized recreational boating, offering wide open waters for quiet paddles with scenic views. They are great locations for birdwatching and wildlife sightings. All kayaks, rowboats and canoes must be steam cleaned

31

prior to being placed on the reservoirs, and boaters age 16 and older must have a NYC Recreational Access Permit. Boat rentals are available at several locations throughout Delaware County including these designated recreational boating vendors:

delaware county travel guide 2019/20

Delaware County is home to picturesque, rural villages and small towns. It is surrounded by panoramic views of the lush Catskill mountains and refreshing waterways. It is also home to family run farms at every corner of the County. While some farmers are simply too hard at work to welcome guests, there are many ways that a visitor may explore a farm experience. Here are just a few ideas: Visit Farm Stands Most all farms offer the freshest of their bounty straight into the hands of the consumer in the form of their farm stands. Stocked daily with the freshly picked, butchered, and milked. You can enjoy vegetables, meats, maple products and much more, just as directly as if you had sown the seeds yourself, minus all the work. Not only consuming the best

quality and earliest produced, but you are putting the money directly into the pocket of those who deserve it the very most. Buying direct is a win-win for all involved, not to mention the tastiest choice. There is also a good chance you might meet one of the great men and women who make this fresh food possible when you stop by. From Burnett Farms (Reagan Road o East Bramley Mountain, Bovina) to Jada Hill Farms (106 Kelsey Rd. Deposit, 607.467.5742) in Deposit, there are incredible farm stands throughout the county. You can get an updated list of farm stands offering seasonal products at greatwestercatskills.com.

Tour the Farms Before moving to the area full-time, Kevin and Lindsay were obsessed with the local foods available in our region. The more they got to know the farmers, the more they wanted to visit their farms, but realized that this was not always a possibility. One morning over local eggs, greens, and bacon, the idea for Table to Farm Tours (tabletofarmtours. com) was born, and they are now offering food and farm related excursions. A typical farm tour means that visitors will cruise the beautiful mountains in their roomy 15-passenger van, stopping at four farms along

Dine on the Farm You can spend each Saturday night from May through October on the Stonycreek Farmstead (1738 Freer Hollow Road, Walton, 607. 865.7965) where Kate and Dan Marsiglio and friends will light the wood-fired, brick oven and invite everyone to feast on pizzas made with local ingredients and farm fresh salads. While Stonycreek offers a farm stay and a variety of workshops and camps all season, their much beloved pizza night is a very special way to enjoy an evening on the farm. So gather around the campfire with them and break bread with visitors, friends and family.

the way. At each spot, the farmer will take guests on a private tour of their land. You’ll meet the animals, see the crops, peek in the cheese cave, taste the hard cider and learn all about how these farm families produce the phenomenal food of this region. Each tour is an intimate opportunity to see up close how food is grown. Along the way they will share their favorite spots in the area and some of the history and stories of the region. You’ll also sample lots of great food and stop at one of the farm cafes for a locally sourced meal.

Stay & Work on the Farm Mountain View Dairy Farm (1468 Bloomville Hill Rd, Bloomville, 518.944.0768) is a family-owned and run operation offering visitors a variety of accommodations based on the type of experience they would like to have. Guests can stay in their three- bedroom guest house or camp atop their 12 x 12 raised platform and rest your weary heads under the stars of the Western Catskills sky. While one doesn’t have to engage with the family or farm at all, Angela and Dan Schmid welcome their visitors to get as involved with the farm work as they want. While not required to stay on the farm, guests can help milk the cows, mingle with the animals, and get to know more about this working dairy farm.

Attend Special Events on the Farm Located on a farmstead dating from the 1800’s, another family operated farm is Weathered Hill Farms (243 Doroski Rd, South Kortright, 607.538.9323) which not only offers farm stays, but hosts a variety of special events throughout the year. From horse drawn sleigh rides near the holidays to Easter photos with the baby lambs that frolic in the fields, Weathered Hill offers a variety of programming to ensure families can engage with the farming experience throughout the year.

Join Us for Some Special Farm Related Special Events After taking a few years off, the Meredith Dairy Festival (3575 Honest Brook Road, Meredith, meredithdairyfest.net) returned in 2017 and can be found on Honest Brook Road in Meredith in 2019. Visitors can enjoy two days of adorable farm animals, incredible local vendors, great live music, fantastic food and ice-cold beer, all while celebrating the past, present and future of dairy which has defined Delaware County. Family Farm Day is produced by Cornell Cooperative Extension with a variety of other

organizations in the region. It’s a unique opportunity to visit farms throughout Schoharie, Otsego and Delaware County. Select farms throughout Delaware County will be opening their barn doors wide to welcome guests on Saturday, August 24th. Explore dairy farms, cattle farms, fish farming, beekeeping, maple syrup making, cheese mongering, milk bottling, sheep’s wool processing, orchards, cider making, and much more. The full listing of participating farms will be available on greatwesterncatskills.com and we urge you to visit as many as you are able. Bring a cooler or insulated grocery bag to take home as much local, farm-fresh products as you can. On the Sunday of every Labor Day weekend people gather at a farm on Crescent Hill in Bovina, New York for Bovina Farm Day (farmingbovinany.org). People travel far and wide for a day of farm related fun. Enjoy the farm related vendors, meet a variety of animals brought in for families to enjoy. Don’t miss the scarecrow contest, the corn maze and a variety of other family friendly workshops and events that take place all day long. These are just a few of the fantastic farms and farming related events that take place throughout Delaware County. Visit greatwesterncatskills.com and check out our farm section to get the latest news and offerings direct from our farms.

A plush fedora, a vintage wedding gown, a worn woolen Pendleton, a pair of river waders, the perfect cameo, or even angel wings. Perhaps you forgot a vital item at home, or you’re looking to spruce up your country chic. Or it may be that you’re in love with the thrill of hunting for odd gems. There are a few stores in Delaware County that should not be missed.

Lufu (84 Main St, Delhi, NY 13753, 212.433.0563) is Old English for love, attraction, or devotion. Jessica Delgrange, owner of this new shop, fills it with all things feminine, including dresses, skirts, coats, and heels, some from her personal collection. She has more than a fantastic sense of style. Jessica holds a larger sense of something like the sacred in items once loved, on occasions likely cherished. The pieces hang on racks made of branches and are color coordinated in vintage hues of the rainbow. They are pristine and they are beautiful. Also sold in her store are items made by local artisans. Felted wool bandanas by Love Lamb, pins, crowns, and feathered angel wings by Cecily Rush, a makeup line by Heaven on Main Street, apothecary by Icelandic Astinmin, and skin

care by Catskill Botanicals. Items are rotated and switched out frequently so if you’re looking for something specific, it’s definitely worth following Lufu on Instagram and making an inquiry. Mercedes Gonzalez’s boutique, Just Shop (43270 State Highway 28, Arkville, NY 12406, 845.586.6040) offers all new women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing, as well as housewares and lingerie. A longtime buyer internationally, Mercedes has developed close relationships with manufacturers that allows her to extend the fruit of those friendships in the form of profoundly discounted prices on sought-after items. She offers a vast array of current styles reaching from preppy to flamboyant, so if the first thing that catches your eye isn’t necessarily your cup of tea, just take a deeper look.

ten years ago in its current location. It is an extension of the long love affair she has had with Delaware County. Entering her store, you will find color matched racks of vintage clothing lining the walls. A peach colored pouf resting in the shop’s center is reminiscent of a shop from the early sixties that Audrey Hepburn might have wandered into, but with a hint of modern flare. In its earliest incarnation, Misha was selling these same types of pieces she now carries to high-end fashion designers for inspiration used in their lines. Now she uses that same eye for trend predicting (or possibly even inspiring) to sell at upstate friendly prices. Traveling all over the world, she takes notice of street style and keeps it in memory when

hand picking her vintage wares. She is also committed to natural fibers and selecting items that ally with a life in the Catskills. Here you will find immaculate vintage pieces to be worn in a modern way, fitting for the country. Wool coats, skirts, frocks, and button-down shirts, feminine floral print dresses, knit cardigans, trench coats, and so much more have all been hand selected by a seasoned pro. There are so many other stores in the region that are worthy of shaking your wallet out for. When you see the “OPEN” sign, walk through the door. It is likely to surprise you. Check out the shopping section of greatwesterncatskills.com to find out about all the shopping in Delaware County.

Paul Collyer always loved The Catskills. For years, he explored the area before settling in Delaware County. As he bought his home, he also had it in his mind to scout out business opportunities. A friend told him about an old bowling alley that he should look at, and so he did. Since then, the process of resurrecting this forgotten beauty has been one of both a pioneering spirit and creating a destination for the nostalgic. One thing is unquestionable, and that is that The Ark Bowl and BBQ (42366 NY-28, Arkville, NY 12406, 845.586.2695) has become a carefully nurtured project assembled with care.

It is not an easy task to breathe new life into the old. Paul was never a “bowling guy”. He wasn’t in a league, and didn’t do it on a regular basis. He had a layman’s knowledge of the sport, which he thought of as more of an activity, surely to the chagrin of leaguers. The first task was to get the place in working condition again by undertaking an extensive remodeling project that included replacing the old floors and using them to construct the bar and tables. Paul is friendly, energetic, and social. It is not surprising that he has brought this gem back to life and flanked himself with skilled people for a smooth run. But simply getting the alley up and running was just the start of it. Collyer has an inspired vision for this place of his. He has renovated the space so that there is a whole separate room from the bar and lanes. Here, he has taken his love affair with nostalgia to the next level. Not only is there memorabilia hanging on the walls, but various items that he has salvaged from around Delaware County and beyond, including stained glass from a church in Kortright, a column from a bank in Fleischmanns, and an old piano from Inman Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts that his mother used to play when he was a child. Paul points these items out with the pride of a good forager with respect for the past. He has built a small stage in the corner

of the room and envisions bands, live shows, and possibly comedy acts. On the street side, there are glass doors that open out onto a giant wrap around porch with Adirondack chairs, from which one can smoke, chat, stargaze in the summer. The vision is to make Ark Bowl much more than just a bowling alley. It is to create a relaxed atmosphere where people want to hang out with friends, dates, and family, even if they’re not into bowling at all. Another big part of the plan is serious food. Collyer has built a two-story kitchen. The top floor hosts a hot food line, while the downstairs room is for prep and houses the large walk-in cooler. He’s thinking casual food well done. House smoked meats, pulled pork, ribs, shrimp and grits, and gumbo are being tossed around to add to the more traditional items like burgers and wings. There will be a full liquor license once the kitchen is open, which Paul estimates should be sometime this spring. Once that happens, you can anticipate a new chill spot for the summer months ahead enjoying bands in the back, barbecue, cocktails, and of course, bowling. Bowling is open now to non-leaguers on Wednesday nights and all day and night on Saturday in this great intimate space with a friendly, retro vibe.

Spotlight on the Arts

Honest Brook Music Festival by Lisa Wisely

Each July and August, a rustic barn bathed in stunning light becomes home to the Honest Brook Music Festival. In these quiet mountains, the team at Honest Brook invite a world class line-up of classical music programs in these Arcadian hills of the Great Western Catskills. These performers are some of the best in their field. Having potentially just come from a performance at Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center, they still eagerly travel upstate to share their musical passions once more with the wilds of Delaware County. Honest Brook also produces a winter concert series. Once hosted in the private homes of the area, it has now found a new home at the Stamford United Methodist Church in Stamford, New York where the organization has hosted three classical music performances in January, February and March. Past programs in both seasons, have featured artists such as The Jasper

String Quartet, Yoonah Kim on clarinet, and Benedict Kloechner on Cello. You’ve come to the country to unwind, relax, breathe easy. A sunset classical concert in the Catskills is just the thing you need to get your dopamine flowing and put your stressors to sleep. If you are looking to be enchanted by some sensational classical music this summer, come

meet the performers at the Honest Brook Festival Barn (1855 Honest Brook Road, Delhi, hbmf.org) Schedules and performers are subject to change, so please visit hbmf.org to learn more about this incredible festival and how to secure tickets for the annual summer and winter performances.
