GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY
At the Hanford Mills Museum in East Meredith, visitors can experience the power of the past at a working mill that served local farms for over a century. hanfordmills.org. Photo by Darren McGee, Empire State Development.
By Robert Cairns Some Delaware County farms allow you to get your hands dirty. Pick your own berries, pumpkins, eggs and Christmas trees or join in during the morning chores at these family farms. At CATSKILL FRESH (96 Laurel Bank Ave., Deposit, 607-467-5762, catskillfresh.com), Lonny and Liz Schaefer raise beef and grow produce at this fourth-generation farm, where you can harvest your own strawberries in the spring and pumpkins in the fall.
BLUE SKY FARM & WINERY (779 Charcoal Rd., Stamford, 607-652-4712, blueskyfarmwinery.com) offers five acres

of “U-Pick” blueberry fields. Pick up a bottle of blueberry wine while you’re there.
WINDY KNOB BLUEBERRY FARM (6517 Turnpike Rd., Meredith, 607-746-2991) has been welcoming blueberry pickers for 40 years. Blueberry season is typically from mid-July through mid-August.
GREENANE FARMS (196 County Rd. 10, Meridale, 607-746-8878, greenanefarms.com)
grows strawberries, raspberries and blackberries in its berry orchard, which is open Monday through Saturday during the summer harvest season. Check in at the farm store for harvest totes and containers. The farm store also offers meats, vegetables and a Mexican restaurant.

has become famous for its eggs, which are sold in supermarkets across the country. Owners Bryan and Betsy Babcock offer you a chance to gather eggs from right underneath the chickens. DONNELLY FARM STAND (5709 E. River Rd., Walton, 607-865-5036) is a favorite autumn stop for pumpkins. Pick your own pumpkin or gourd from an array of familiar and exotic varieties in the fall. One of the best local harvests happens in the dead of winter. ”Pick your own” Christmas tree (with a little help) at
ROBSON’S CHRISTMAS TREES (2425 Jim Lane Rd., Bovina Center, 607-832-4306),
which is open Fridays through Sundays between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The farm lets visitors select a tree up to 10 feet tall in one of several varieties. Or head to HAWLEY FAMILY TREE
FARM (4528 Peakes Brook Rd., Delhi, 607-746-3543), where hot cocoa, Christmas
cookies and a snug woodstove await visitors who get cold while tromping the fields in search of the perfect tree.
Delaware County Fair: The Highlight of Summer Now celebrating its 130th year, the DELAWARE COUNTY FAIR (Fair St., Walton, 13856. Aug. 15 to Aug. 20. delawarecountyfair.org) is a six-day celebration of rural life that draws tens of thousands of people to the town of Walton each year. Local farmers show off their best cows, horses, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, chickens, vegetables and more. Equestrians put horses through their paces in riding competitions, while small garden tractors and giant professional rigs compete in tractor pulls. There’s an entire barn filled with antique tractors and engines. Kids can pet a calf, practice milking a cow and watch a sculptor carve butter into a life-size work of art. Nighttime at the fair brings entertainment to the grandstand. Local auto buffs spend all year building derby cars that smash into each other during two popular demolition derbies. Crowds pack the motorcycle thrill show, try the rides and games on the midway and sample a kaleidoscopic array of food, much of it served on a stick. Pigs at the Delaware County Fair. FARMSTAYS By Heather Rolland Bed & breakfasts meet agritourism! Spend the night at a local farm, and eat food made from ingredients that were raised right outside. LA BASSE COUR (3228 Gunhouse Hill Rd., South Kortright, 607-538-9707, la-basse-cour.com) has comfy rooms in the farmhouse and delicious homemade breakfasts. Goats, chickens, cows, dogs and farm cats might accompany you on your strolls around the farm—and if you need to stay connected, wireless internet is available. There’s a farm store on the premises, and you can fish nearby. STONE & THISTLE FARM (1211

STATE OF THE UNION
Brewing and distilling are staging a comeback in Delaware County with hard apple cider, a vodka made with local apples and a nationally renowned absinthe. UNION GROVE DISTILLERY (43311 Route 28, Arkville, 845-586-6300, uniongrovedistillery.com) celebrated its grand opening in February 2016. Named for a town that is now covered by the waters of the nearby Pepacton Reservoir, which supplies New York City’s

drinking water, Union Grove’s product is Vly Creek vodka, made with wheat and locally grown apples pressed in an antique cider press at the nearby Hubbell Family Farm. Owners Todd Pascarella and Brian Mulder have long-term plans to make bourbon and whiskey. The cocktail lounge and tasting room at the front of the distillery features a crackling wood fire, a coppertopped bar and, for fans of craft spirits who have children in tow, a kids’ playroom. Cheryl Lins, the founder of DELAWARE
PHOENIX DISTILLERY (144 Delaware St., Walton, 607-865-5056, delawarephoenix.com),

has earned international acclaim for her line of handcrafted traditional absinthes. Using old-school methods and wormwood that is grown for her by local farmers, Lins was the first distiller in New York state to make the formerly outlawed spirit. Lins has recently added a line of whiskeys to her repertoire, and does all the work of grinding grain, fermenting mash, distilling, bottling and delivering her products herself. AWESTRUCK PREMIUM HARD CIDER comes in three flavors: Eastern dry, Hibiscus Ginger and Lavender Hops. Founders Patti Wilcox and Casey Vitti built
their company, GRAVITY CIDERS (8 Winkler Rd., Sidney, gravityciders.com), to create local jobs, and it’s doing just that: In 2016, Gravity Ciders outgrew its home in Walton and moved to a larger facility in Sidney, after just a year in business. WAYSIDE CIDER (waysidecider.com), which makes some of its small batches of cider from foraged “feral” apples, will be opening a cidery and tasting room in Andes in 2016. A microbrewery called WEAVER HOLLOW FARMHOUSE ALES (weaverhollow.com) is also aiming to open a facility in Andes, in 2017.

Yesterday’s Eateries: Dine Out Old-School Style Some places, like old-school diners, steakhouses and ice cream parlors, never change. MILLER’S BAR-B-Q (29735 Route 10, Walton, 607-865-4721) is the quintessential roadside barbecue shack. Chicken is the specialty here, but ribs are also popular. THE DELHI DINER (95 Main Street, Delhi, 607-746-2207) is the very embodiment of a small-town diner. Open for breakfast and lunch only. ANGUS & ALE STEAKHOUSE, SEAFOOD AND TAVERN (64-66 Main St., Sidney, 607-6044273) serves steaks, seafood and crème brûlée in a dining room straight out of “Mad
Men.” Order a flight of wine at 1940s prices: $7 gets you four three-ounce pours. LITTLE ITALY PIZZERIA (100 Front St., Deposit, 607-467-4774), a local favorite, serves small-town Italian food—pizza, sandwiches and Sicilian specials. SUNDAES RESTAURANT & ICE CREAM PARLOR (36422 Route 23, Grand Gorge, 607-5888808) is a 1950s-style summertime roadside ice cream parlor. CIRCLE E DINER (369 E. Front St., Hancock, 607-637-9905) is another classic diner, where
regulars rub shoulders with anglers traveling up Route 17 in search of trout. BLUE BEE CAFÉ (114 Main St., Delhi, 607-746-8060) looks like a Main Street soda fountain, with long marble countertops and high-backed wooden booths inlaid with stained glass.

Weddings
Make your wedding a barnburner. Rustic barns, cathedral glens, hidden ponds and roaring bonfires are hosting a generation of nuptial celebrations.

WHERE TO GET HITCHED
By Rebecca Andre A growing appetite for a more authentic “I do has turned the historic barns, schoolhouses and mansions of the Catskills into coveted wedding venues. MAPLE SHADE FARM (2066 County Rd. 18, Delhi, 607-746-8866, mapleshadefarmny.com) hosts weddings in a historic three-story barn or in a tent nearby. Strutting peacocks and a huge collection of vintage props add to the

ambiance. Just down the road from picture perfect Fitches Covered Bridge, the jewel of the farm is the yellow wooden barn set on bucolic acreage that can accommodate 50 to 500 guests dancing until dawn. CATSKILLS ESCAPE WEDDINGS
(109 Post Rd., Franklin, 607-353-1533, catskillsescape.com) will host your wedding in a tent next to a lake or on a hilltop with a fire-engine-red barn and a lakeside wildflower meadow as a backdrop. Hold the rehearsal dinner and after-ceremony dancing in the barn, and put up the wedding party in the historic 1860s farmhouse.
DELAWARE COUNTY GUIDE
Weddings
Over eight years ago, Casper de Boer and Oscar-winning filmmaker Roger Ross Williams began hosting weddings in their 165-year-old carriage barn. Today, THE ROXBURY BARN
(667 County Rd. 41, Roxbury, 607-326-4874, theroxburybarn.com) is one of the region’s
most popular wedding venues, working with an extensive list of recommended local vendors. Dine on a country feast supplied by the numerous local organic farms. Dance around a towering bonfire under the stars. Say your vows beside lush perennial gardens, near a series of spring-fed ponds, on the banks of a rambling brook or in a clearing in a cathedral-like pine grove. CASTLE ON THE DELAWARE (139
Stockton Ave., Walton, 607-865-4300, castleonthedelaware.com) brings a regal
touch to a big event. Built in 1896 as a National Guard armory, “The Castle” has the look and feel of a medieval palace. With full catering capabilities, it can accommodate bashes with as many as 600 guests. THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE INN
(28218 Route 206, Downsville, 607-3637814, oldschoolhouseinn.com), a historic schoolhouse that is on the National Register of Historic Places, has been renovated as a thoroughly modern restaurant and banquet facility with antique charm. HANDSOME HOLLOW (5256 County
Rd. 28, Long Eddy, handsomehollow. com) hosts stylish wedding weekends in a 240-year-old barn, which has recently been relocated and restored near the property’s 19th-century farmhouse.
A Movable (Wedding) Feast Caterers create fresh-from-the-farm banquets, some served on vintage “grandmother’s dishes,” for your treasured guests. working farm with waterfalls, woodlands, bonfires and a hops garden. Weddings are held in a brandnew barn that can hold up to 300 guests. SPILLIAN (50 Fleischmanns Heights Rd., Fleischmanns, 800-811-3351, spillian.com), a historic lodge from the Gilded Age, is a superb 19th-century mansion complete with frescos, antiques and chandeliers. Outside, there are bluestone walls, a fire pit, a romantic stone stage and a another chandelier, this one hanging from a forest cathedral ceiling. BARN AT THE MARGARETVILLE
MOUNTAIN INN (1478 Margaretville Mountain Rd., Margaretville, 845-5863933, margaretvilleinn.com) is a certified Green Concierge venue that can host up to 125 guests in a tent or in a newly restored barn with breathtaking views. THE INN AT WEST SETTLEMENT
A three-story wooden barn is the setting for weddings at Maple Shade Farm in Delhi.
(1117 Andrew Gray Rd., Roxbury, 518-6725423, theinnatwestsettlement.com) supplies bouquets from its own organic cutting gardens, and sets its farmhouse tables in the barn with vintage china. Host up to 500 guests at STONE TAVERN
FARM (2080 Upper Meeker Hollow Rd., Roxbury, 607-326-3600, stonetavernfarm.com) with horses and ziplines as a backdrop for a party that can go all night long. This venue is known for offering a summer-camp-like experience for adults. WEST KORTRIGHT CENTRE (49 West
Kortright Church Rd., East Meredith, 607278-5454, westkc.org), a former church, can seat 200 in its stained-glass-lit auditorium and boasts an outdoor dance floor surrounded by verdant fields. Make your vows high on a mountain peak at PLATTEKILL MOUNTAIN
(469 Plattekill Mountain Rd., Roxbury, 607-326-3500, plattekill.com). You and
your guests will ride the chairlift to get to the ceremony, and then celebrate afterward around the bar in the family owned ski center’s woodsy lodge.
