INSIDE SCORPIOS
To the east of the island of Lefkada lies an islet which has been associated,
more than any other, with the concept of a private paradise and the legend of Aristotle Onassis.
Aristotle Onassis would always inspect his fleet personally and was very meticulous about it, demanding updates on every detail
U
ntil recently there had been just one photograph from Scorpios’ interior, that of its owner’s wedding ceremony with Jackie Kennedy, the widow of the late president of the USA, on the 20th of October 1968. Despite the fact that publicity served as a powerful magnet for Onassis, he managed to keep this possession away from the voracious curiosity of the Press. Any information that may have seeped through, excited people’s imagination and created the necessary myth. Besides, the shipowner from Smyrna knew how to manipulate situations. He organised a concert by the world-famous soprano Maria Callas, his mistress at the time, at
the neighbouring island of Lefkada, to thank the authorities for the valuable resource they offered him: water. It is true that when he had bought the barren island in the Ionian Sea for 3,000,000 drachmas, everyone thought he was out of his mind. Some years later, the same people realised that willpower can work wonders. The arid island had turned into an earthly garden of Eden. Paparazzies from all around the world swarmed and camped at the village of Nidri in Lefkada, focusing their telephoto lenses on the famous guests hosted by Onassis on various occasions. Yet the happy years did not last long. First came the mysterious death, in a plane crash, of Alexander Onassis in 1973. Next, his father followed, succumbing to his sorrow and longing at the Hôpital Americain de Neuilly two years later. Finally, his daughter Christina died in Buenos Aires; she was only 38 years old. Alexandros Onassis was only 25 when he died. They were all buried at Scorpios. ART DE VIVRE

It was Onassis’ marriage to Jackie that spawned the Golden Age of Scorpios
In 1977, the beloved sister of Onassis, Artemis Garofalidou, invited the director and photographer Vasilis Maros and allowed him for the first time to shoot Scorpios’ interior. This rare material was published in 2009 in a book by Fereniki Publications. As Onassis’ sister recalls, “I told him ‘Aristos, why are we stopping here?’ ‘I like this place’, he said. Of course, there were hardships, but he managed to rise above them and eventually bought it. The place was completely neglected when he got it and it took him five whole years to build the roads and all those other things that made the island what it was destined to be. By the time it was finished, he didn’t want it to have too many lights, because he was a simple man. It had enough lights for us to be able to walk around at night. He had truly loved that island, which was also very beneficial for the nearby island of Lefkada, since it offered employment to the local citizens and changed the island’s potential”. Scorpios feels like taking a step closer to heaven. While walking around in the afternoon, you feel as if the sky is just one breath away. It is truly a paradise. ART DE VIVRE

To Aristotle Onassis, Scorpios was his sanctuary. This is why all of Christina’s pleas for glamour and luxury ran against the brick wall of her father’s legendary adage: “If you want to see lights, go to Broadway” 14

THE NEW SCORPIOS
Left Ekaterina Rybolovleva Right A few of the transformations implemented by the new owner of Scorpios
By Christos Zampounis
In 2013, the Russian billionaire Dmitri Rybolovlev bought Scorpios from Athena Onassis. Today he intends to transform the island into a luxurious resort, with 5-star hotels and spas.
S
ix years after the private island was bought for 100,000,000 euros from Athena Onassis, the sole heiress of Aristotle Onassis, the new owner, Dmitry Rybolovlev, received permission from the Council of State to implement his investment plan, amounting to 165,000,000 euros. This investment includes a 5-star hotel, a heliport, swimming pools, a spa, fitness clubs, sports facilities, horse breeding facilities and an equestrian centre, a children’s park, restaurants as well as infrastructures, such as installations for the production of electricity, desalination plants, a liquid sewage treatment plant, road networks, an agricultural farm, a poultry unit etc.
16
ART DE VIVRE
Apart from the central building, the plan is to construct 12 villas, ranging from 500 to 1,200 sq.m. each; the historical houses dating from the Onassis era at the east and southern side will also be renovated. Yet the focal point of the dawning of the new age of Scorpios is based on lifting the prohibition of freedom of navigation in the area, which was in force for almost half a century, a feat of accomplishment of the Greek tycoon in order to avoid unwanted and indiscreet visitors. In order to change the island from its private to public nature, a series of studies and permissions was required by the archaeological, forest, regional and municipal authorities. Scorpios’ integration, along with the islands Meganisi, Arkoudi, Atokos and Vromonos, in the European ecological network Natura 2000 offers it a shield of environmental protection. In this way, roughly 400,000 acres were named “special area for the conservation of natural reserves and for nature-based recreational activities”; on this land any kind of construction work is also prohibited. Finally, the investment plan includes modernising the two existing harbours (docks ‘Christina’ and ‘Panagia’), aiming to attract the docking of big yachts and boats.

A
t the end of the last century, prince Nikolaos of Greece accompanied his father, king Constantine, former king of Hellenes, as is his correct title, to Cyprus. They were to attend the World Sailing Annual Conference, of which Constantine was, as a golden Olympic medallist in sailing, the honorary president. At night, the event’s organisers invited all participants to a venue with Greek music. It was there that the following dialogue took place: - It’s nice here, like being in Greece. - It’s like Greece, but it’s not Greece.
At a time when his family was engaged in a judicial litigation with the Greek government concerning their confiscated property, Nikolaos expressed through these few words his nostos (= longing) for his homeland, a word first mentioned by Homer’s Odysseus and a term widely used today within the word nostalgia. Although born in Rome, the second born son and third child of king Constantine and queen Anna-Maria received a Hellenic education with the prospect of living in the land where his ancestors had reigned since 1863. While in neighbouring Italy, Nikolaos had a private Greek educator. Next, when his family moved to Great Britain, after the abolition of Constitutional Monarchy by the junta, he graduated from the Hellenic College of London which was founded by his father. After finishing school, he studied International Relations at Brown University in the USA. Although he wasn’t obliged to, he served in the Royal Marines; next he worked in TV production for Fox News in New York and in the Foreign Exchange Options department for Nat West Markets in London, before taking over his father’s private office. His persisting dream to live permanently in Greece became a reality in 2013, three years after marrying Tatiana Blatnik in Spetses. His consistent engagement with photography started at that time, even though, as he notes, there was a small precedent. “During the summers, when we used to go on holidays to Spain, I would observe my uncle Juan Carlos taking non-staged photos of people, mainly using a long lens. I must have been 12-13 years old. When my mother bought me an Olympus camera, I also started taking photos mainly of my friends and relatives. In the years to come I would collect lenses and photographic accessories, until one day, my whole equipment was drenched and destroyed during a trip in Bangkok. Subsequently, I would borrow cameras, until my wife bought me a digital camera as a present. I remember us being in Arizona and while shooting the impressive landscapes I decided that this is what I want to do in my life, which is also what my wife had always encouraged me to do. On returning to Athens, I would spend hours taking photos not so much of the city, nor the people, but of the surrounding nature. The Greek light, which has 20

been praised since antiquity to this day, was the turning point of my inspiration. I’ve been asked if my photographs have been computer enhanced. I always reply no. I just imprint reality, a reality which anyone can come across if one has the patience and finds himself at the right place. I also think it would seem like a blasphemy to intervene in Nature’s work, whom I consider to be the world’s greatest artist”. In November 2005 he exhibited his work for the first time at Christie’s in London. The following year his photography was featured at the New York Times’ Conference Art for Tomorrow, in Doha, Quatar. In June 20018, his first solo exhibition was held at Melbourne’s Hellenic Museum, titled: Phos: A journey of light. Equally indicative is the title of his latest work which was exhibited at the historical Rundetarn tower in Copenhagen. His next exhibition will take place in Doha, bearing the title Aegean desert. “It is a composition of dialogues among the desert landscapes and the Aegean sea”, he explains. And he further elaborates: “Even on an overcast day, there is light hidden behind the clouds just waiting to shine through”.

very summer something special occurs on the crystal-clear waters lapping the shores of Spetses island. Elegant sailboats from another era trace gentle circles on the glass surface of the Argolic Gulf, their graceful wooden hulls cutting through the waves with barely a whisper. Canvas sails flutter playfully in the breeze and sea spray makes rainbows in the air, whilst sailors test the wind and jockey for position outside the island’s main Dapia port. The Spetses Classic Yacht Regatta is organised by the Yacht Club of Greece. It first took place 8 years ago - and is now a firmly established part of the Mediterranean yachting scene. In 2018, the regatta attracted 85 participating vessels with crew travelling
from the UK, France, Turkey and even Australia. There was a record turnout of spectators throughout the four day celebration, a number predicted to be exceeded again in 2019. Choosing Spetses as the destination for this classic yacht regatta was no coincidence. The history of the island is strongly interwoven with the Greek shipbuilding tradition and it acquired great wealth as a naval and commercial power in the 19th century. The Spetsiot shipyards continue to build and repair beautiful wooden boats known locally as kaikis, many of which take part in the regatta. The sailing conditions around the island are also ideal as the Argolic Gulf is very well protected, with the mild boukadoura winds blowing in from the southeast. ART DE VIVRE

The races test skill and endurance, pitting sailors against each other across five categories: Classic Yachts, Aegean Schooners & Traditional Work Boats, Traditional Open Boats, Family Open Boats (Dinghies) and Contemporary Classic Yachts. Lined up along the docks, their brightwork gleaming in the Greek sunshine and their masts standing silent and proud, the participating yachts include survivors from the golden era of sailing, indisputably flawless due to their finely crafted interiors and meticulously preserved exteriors. These vintage vessels are easily recognised at sea by their pervading atmosphere of romance and intrigue, whilst their modern counterparts also embody the elegant fine lines of the past but are built and rigged with modern techniques and materials. After a hot day of racing on the beautiful yet lively sailing grounds around the island, crews head ashore to quench their thirst and tell stories of the day. The regatta’s onshore hub is the iconic Poseidonion Grand Hotel, majestically poised on the water’s edge of Spetses Town and overlooking the proceedings. PARIS SIGALAS
The king of Assyrtiko By Christos Zampounis

Within 20 years, the talented wine maker Paris Sigalas created a new Asyrtiko, at the estate which he inherited from his father, in the northern part of Santorini.
T
he volcanic eruption of Santorini in the 17th century B.C. may have destroyed one of the most important civilisations of antiquity, however, it created a subsoil which hosts a unique vineyard. Around 50 varieties of vines prosper in the mainly anhydrous island of the Aegean sea, its gemstone being the Asyrtiko, a local white wine variety, which according to the connoisseurs of wine is considered the best in the Mediterranean. To the overall story of Asyrtiko there is one before and one after Paris Sigalas. He is the winemaker who applied mathematics to oenology in order to introduce Santorini’s brand name to the elite of international wine affairs. It is the same man who, with the support of his other enlightened colleagues, revealed a treasure which had remained hidden until then. Within 20 years, Paris Sigalas created a new Asyrtiko, at the estate which he inherited from his father, in the northern part of Santorini. His career was based on an in-depth research of viticulture, and next on what he calls “the institutional protection of the vineyard”, aiming in the long run to include it in the areas protected by Unesco, following the example of other famous vineyards ART DE VIVRE

In ancient times the wines of Santorini were exported and received widespread acclaim. The same is happening 3,500 years later; Protected designation of origin (PDO) Santorini is among the most sought-after white wines.
in France and Italy. The protected designation of origin (PDO) Santorini was one of the successes of the industry which he represents. “We joined forces and our business focus was on preserving the wines. We agreed on wine-ambassadors and the countriesmarkets we were aiming at. We started this private initiative with 15 winemakers and next we collaborated with the Export Promotion Council”. I ask him if the Santorini wine, due to its limited production, is expensive. “This is a myth and a superficial approach” he protests. “A 32

Chilean or Australian wine may be cheaper in USA shelves, but it does not have the same character and personality with one of our own. To give you an explicit example, if ‘Santorini’ had a French or Italian label it would sell for double the price”. When it comes to the international awards his wines systematically receive, he remains distant. “The awards are a matter of luck, unless of course they are repeated. On the other hand, I think that it is important that Parker, the top American wine guide has included us in its ratings” (I am informed from his website that Santorini 2011 has a very high rate of 92/100, whereas Vinsanto reaches an outstanding 95/100). Despite his previous struggles, the winemaker is as active as ever. He worries about mass tourism on his island, which welcomed more than 2,000,000 visitors in 2018. He is further disappointed with the unplanned construction works on old, deserted vineyards, because of the increased need for tourist accommodation establishments. He hopes that local authorities and the island’s inhabitants will focus on quality tourism , the kind of tourism which is widely evident at his winery - an oasis of good taste in Oia, where wine tastings take place on a daily basis. Before we part ways his final words are full of meaning: “Santorini is one of the very few places in the world were white wines age exquisitely for up to ten years”.
Sir Antony Gormley at the archaeological site of Delos island. Reflect, 2017
Once upon a time in Delos
By Christos Zampounis
A
bizarre figure caught my eye while entering the harbour of Delos. The shape of a man who was entering the sea was becoming more and more visible as we were approaching the shore, giving us a first taste of sir Anthony Gormley’s Sight installations. The sacred island’s ‘rehabilitation’, which was once, according to tradition, the birthplace of Apollo and his sister Artemis, is a fact. The myth is interesting. Zeus, the father of all gods, after prevailing over Cronus, coupled with the Titaness Leto. Instantaneously, that very act rendered her a target for Hera, Zeus’ lawful wife. A hunt against the pregnant goddess commenced and no land was willing to host her, fearing the wrath and vengeance of Hera. Zeus asked Poseidon, his brother, to help him, and the latter chose a floating island which he stabilized in the middle of the Cycladic archipelago. The isle was named Delos, which means ‘visible’, ‘brilliant’ or ‘lucid’. From a geological perspective the myth is explained by a volcanic activity, which allowed the emergence of the island to the sea’s surface. At the same time, the incredible sunlight, perhaps the most glorious one in the south-eastern Mediterranean, connected the islet to the worship of Apollo, the god of light. 34

For centuries its holy attributes protected it from foreign intrusions, yet it was the relentlessness of Time and illicit antiquity trade that have caused it irreparable damage. The island had remained abandoned since the 7th century A.D. However, in 1877, thanks to the generous grant of the Duke of Lubat, the members of the French Archaeological School of Athens, also known as the ‘Athenians’, implemented the first extensive excavation on Delos. Soon they revealed the best-preserved ancient city in Greece. According to the estimates of town planners, the island used to be inhabited during its peak by 30,000 people. The amazed French archaeologists witnessed glorious statues coming to light, such as the Diadoumenos (diadem-bearer), and the exquisite mosaics, such as the ones found at the House of Masks. Above all, they were impressed by the luxury of the private houses, a luxury also evident on various other artefacts, murals and golden jewellery pieces. It was not long before they realised that the islet’s wealth came from commerce; Delos used to be a strategic sea-trading centre between the East and the West. Information from the greatest geographer of antiquity, Strabo, clearly connects the archaeological findings with the trading of slaves. During the Roman times, Apollo’s holy island was released of debts and taxes, making it the Hong Kong of antiquity. Contemporary visitors are able to see the remains of stakes, from which slaves were tied and exhibited. Naturally, we would be inclined to believe that life on the island had run its historical course and that it would remain protected from any human activities. Lo and behold, Sight installations turned the tables for the lack of human presence on the island. The new inhabitants of Delos may not be living beings, yet through Art, they are able to trace our connection to decay and simultaneously remind us of the timelessness of creativity.

Reading Society The jewel of Corfu By Christos Zampounis
For almost two centuries the Reading Society of Corfu has been the lively intellectual centre of the capital of the Heptanese and the trustee of its rich tradition, its art and literature.
40
ART DE VIVRE
Housed in a building of magnificent Venetian architecture, the Reading Society is the focal point of the intellectuals of Corfu
I
n the beginning of the 19th century, the wind of the Enlightenment era blew throughout the whole of Europe, inspiring the notions of liberty and democracy in the young adults at the time. Kindled by their youth, they would set the world right again and again, discussing for hours on end at the cafés of that epoch. Naturally, their activity did not please the prevalent authoritarian regimes – with the exception of England – of the Old Continent. Those intellectual pioneers suffered persecutions which led them to create societies, mainly reading ones, since ideas spread through reading.
In 1836, Corfu was under British protection. It was the capital of the State of the seven Ionian islands, namely, Corfu, Zakynthos, Cephalonia, Ithaca, Paxi, Lefkada and Kythera. The Heptanese, as they are called today, never fell under Ottoman rule; consequently, their evolution and characteristics were affected because of this, to a great extent. These islands are closer to the West than the East, a fact which is evident in their habits, customs, architecture, the inhabitants’ way of thinking and dressing, in their overall behaviour. Its proximity to Italy led the prominent youth of Corfu to attend the educational institutions of the land of Dante and beyond. After finishing their studies and returning to their homeland they became the core of the first Administrative Council of the Reading Society of Corfu. Their prime concern was to remain in touch with the European literary productions, by subscribing to newspapers and reviews that were of interest to them. Soon, the patriotic desire to connect the Heptanese with free, mainland Greece became one of the Society’s prime goals. ART DE VIVRE
41
More than 35,000 book volumes, many of which rare, can be seen in the spacious rooms of the Reading Society, along with paintings and engravings by Heptanese artists
And soon enough, their assemblies were replete with glorious literati who indelibly affected Greek literature, such as Dionysios Solomos, the poet who wrote the National Anthem of Greece, Andreas Kalvos and Lorenzos Mavilis. Apart from being a scholars’ hub, the Society played an important role in the years that followed, when the Constitution was made more democratic, when the laws protecting the freedom of press were enacted and when Greek became the official language of the Ionian State. In 1921, its housing in a magnificent Venetian building was the starting point of its new set of activities, allowing it to acquire a more sociable status, as it now also functioned as a gentlemen’s club. Its previous book collection was enriched by the important donations and sponsorships of enlightened members. Today Corfu’s Reading Society owns roughly 35,000 volumes of special interest, 220 newspaper titles of the 19th and 20th century, rare manuscripts, maps, engravings and paintings, mainly by Heptanese artists. As a trustee of tradition and customs, it continues to serve as a centre for arts and letters which organises scientific conferences, book presentations, concerts and exhibitions.

Setting off from the children’s choir in her hometown of Larissa at the age of 5 and moving all the way to the biggest operas in the world, the Greek soprano’s career has been the outcome of willpower, hard work and decisions that were also about saying no. By Christos Zampounis

Myrtò Papatanasiu he following conversation took place between Franco Zeffirelli and Myrtò Papatanasiu during the first rehearsal for the Traviata in 2007 in Rome.
- Myrto what’s wrong? you seem worried. - Maestro, I learned my role by heart in just three days and yet things don’t seem to be running smoothly. - Don’t worry, everything will be alright. You have the role within you. You are Greek and the element of tragedy required for the role runs in your veins.
The die was cast. After the Teatro dell’ Opera in Rome the Greek soprano was literally ‘adopted’ by the Italian director, who chose her to be his new muse. It is true that after Maria Callas, Myrtò Papatanasiu is the only Greek singer, with the exception of Agnes Baltsa, who crossed the threshold of some of the leading opera houses in the world, such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Opéra National in Paris, the Deutsche Staatsoper in Berlin, the Staatsoper in Vienna and many more. It is also true that apart from the Maria Callas Grand Prix award which she received in 2012 in Dallas, opera enthusiasts more than often compare her to her fellow-countrywoman. 44

I was lucky to have Dimitris Karvounis as my teacher, who was exceptionally active and visionary for a choir director of a provincial city. He created a remarkable music ensemble which would often perform abroad; he also established a great choir festival in our town”. The road to success had already been paved. She studied Music at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Monody at the National Music School of Thessaloniki; she won a scholarship in Italy where she met Franco Matteucci, who convinced her to switch from being a mezzo-soprano at the time, to a soprano. She has had numerous work proposals but she makes sure to point out that she prefers to “hasten slowly”. 46

“I was never in a hurry, I never told myself now is the time to perform in a great theatre. My main concern was to preserve the gift of singing and improve my technique. The latter I gained with hard work”. I asked her what is the secret of a successful career in singing. Her answer was disarming: “respect your vocal cords and don’t have as a sole priority the money or glory that comes with a job offer”. Myrtò Papatanasiu is already booked for performances until 2020, which means that her career philosophy is clearly defined. “A singer controls his or her path through contemplation, willpower and maturity. Having a beautiful voice is 20%. The rest is about having a well-developed technique, making good choices and acquiring the necessary strength to face the pressures of performing on stage”.

ART, INBOUND For Marina Tomacceli Filomarino, Paxos island is one of the most beautiful places she has seen in her life. Her initiative to organise an art project there offered majestic, new perspectives to this beauty. She shares with us the backstory and what’s next. Interview to Savvas Savvaidis, President & CEO at Greece Sotheby’s International Realty.
M
arina’s relation with Paxos began a long time before she was even born. Her parents ‘accidentally’ discovered Corfu and Paxos, while they were looking to find a nice place by the sea, next to Italy. “Although there was no contact with Greece nor did it have any special meaning for my family, my mother fell in love with Paxos. She bought a house straight away, near the seaside” recalls Marina. “She was shown this old ruin in the middle of the island which fascinated her, because of its little secret garden. An old Greek man was still taking care of, although nobody was living in the house anymore. He was so much attached to the garden. It was very lively, it was not abandoned”. Her mother was an interior designer, her father was the owner of an advertising agency, the founder of a small company for old style fashion and a style columnist for Corriere della Sera’s Style supplement. Both of them created a family environment for Marina which included many creative nuances.

In conjunction with her love for Paxos, an art oriented idea on the island came as no surprise. “It was born 3 years ago, when I was travelling around Paxos, marvelling at its beauty. I always thought that the greatest artist in the world is Mother Nature. There was a little cave that had some random black and white colours which brought to my mind Mark Rothko’s work” states Marina, who then thought of artist Christo and his large floating installations at the Lago d’ Iseo. “I imagined 10 ‘Christos’ there interacting with this beauty. I didn’t want to make an exhibition in a church or in a school - I wanted to set up an outdoor
installation, within the environment”. Her idea was praised by a friend of hers, an artist from Berlin, to whom she opened up about this dream she had. “She knew Paxos and she said she knew at least 10 artists who would immediately come to the island and exhibit. I thought this was a crazy idea but she reassured me what a fantastic idea it was, how artists are always looking for places where they can be inspired and not only have to work indoors in a museum or in a gallery, or in an exhibition, but to be free in a place where open space, public art is great”. And this is how the Paxos Contemporary Art Project was born. ART DE VIVRE
49
“I think it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen in my life”.
Eight cutting-edge contemporary artists were invited in 2018 by the newly funded Project to interact with the wild and natural beauty of Paxos and creating a memorable art experience to everyone who witnessed it. The project will become a Biennale, returning in 2020. “Next year there will be 8-10 artists coming again. We need artists who really work with nature, who develop Art movement - they have to play with the wind, with the sound. For example, one can play with the wind by doing a sound installation or something that interacts with the wind” states Marina, while adding that the next show has to be even more environmentally and socially conscious. “I want it to be absolutely in respect to nature. The installations have to be something that will able to be recycled, something that stays forever or something that you can take away and use it in a different way. I don’t want to create waste. Furthermore, I would be happy with the participation of more Greek artists, and definitely more women. Last year we had only one Greek artist and only one woman”. But, why Paxos? I ask Marina. “I think it is so unique with so many different beauties. The beaches, going around on a boat, the caves, Daskalia, the olive trees and the countryside, everything is concentrated in one place. There are so many beauties in one spot, in one island with so many different landscapes. I think it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen in my life. Also, the relationship I have with the people, it’s like going home for me. Paxos gave me so much these last 40 years and I want to give back to the island”. 50

was observing with an entomologist’s precision the guests’ appearances at the recent Met Gala, which took place on the 30th of June in New York. What caught my attention was a black diamond choker with matching black diamond earrings and a white diamond ring donned by Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman, better known as Zendaya. The 22-year-old actress and singer seemed to exude self-confidence as she was looking at the photographers’ lenses, yet I believe that the ‘treasure’ she was wearing helped her towards that. Zendaya is not the only celebrity who chose jewellery by Corina Larpin of Stéfère. Beyoncé, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift had preceded her and more are to come. There were very few indications that could have foretold the future, when Corina Mihaila deserted communist Romania at the age of 18. The first indication, without doubt, was that she didn’t want to dress like the rest of her fellow comrades, in a country where maintaining homogeneous appearances was essential. The second indication was her inexorable willpower, as well as her dream to fly away which is exactly what happened, and what came next, seems like a fairy tale come true. A meeting with the creator of Stéfère Jewellery, Stephanie Rehault, led her to the jewellery-making industry. With the hunger and thirst she had for beauty, as she puts it plainly, she immersed herself in the

business and started learning all about the job’s technicalities. She would ask about and learn everything, ignoring working hour limits and holidays. Success, as often happens to determined and hardworking people, came soon enough. The European company expanded to the USA. Top department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue bought her creations and the first famous customers, such as Elton John and Victoria Beckham, wore her jewellery. The next step was the Chinese market, Hong Kong in particular. Last year she and her family moved there from Geneva. Travelling and time spent with her family are her new priorities. “While living in Europe we would spend our summers in America. Once we moved to Asia, we started looking for a place in Europe for our holidays. I’m grateful to my husband for buying a nice beach house in Mykonos. We have direct access to the ocean from our house, imagine, the sea is only 88 steps away! I go there every morning, there is nothing more serene and refreshing than standing on the stairs, listening to the ocean and enjoying the summer breeze”.

Blue is Corine Larpin’s favourite colour, “because my son Alex has blue eyes. Mykonos is heaven, because the Mykonian blue is the best kind. I rest my eyes by looking at the turquoise water and the clear blue sky and the creative side of me becomes restless, thinking about how to incorporate more blue sapphires in my jewelleries, how to create pieces that resemble the natural wonder in front of me. I also enjoy spending time in the village; every second I discover a new shade of blue: in people’s houses, at their door frames or fences, their outdoor furniture, or even their tablecloths… Wandering around the town gives me sweet surprises, discovering yet another small, colorful Orthodox
church at every corner of the street. I go into all of them, just to spend some time praying, or simply let my thoughts linger. They remind me of my roots and beliefs and inspire me to add more crosses to my existing Cross Collection. Contrary to most people (including my son Alex who loves to play tennis), I like the wind here. I think it symbolises wilderness. There are also many wild plants here. I love nature and flowers, there is a whole Flower Collection in my jewellery brand Stéfère. Looking at the plants dancing to the wind gives me new perspective and creative ideas”. She doesn’t keep her Greek experience just for herself. She shares
it with her friends from Europe and America, as well as with her family from Romania. “We check out the beaches during day time, the local party scenes by night and enjoy amazing Greek cuisine in between. Greek salad is one of my all-time favourite dishes, but I am most attached to Greek desserts. I love the Karavan pastries, I have them in my home and office. Whenever I know that I have friends traveling to Greece, I ask them to bring me a box. Now that I am in Greece, I get to have authentic Greek dessert all the time. Since my friends are around, that makes every dining experience better. We even named our favorite Greek dessert ‘the mess’ ”. ART DE VIVRE

“Ethereal” island The deserted island which turned into an eco-friendly paradise and hosted political personas and pop celebrities, such as the Beatles. By Christos Zampounis
I Left Every afternoon, due to the tides at the Euripus strait, the large extension of sand at the island’s west side sinks into the sea, only to reappear a few hours later
t used to be called ‘guitar’ or ‘fish’ island due to its shape. In 1958, Sophocles Papanikolaou, the chancellor to the Greek royal court, bought the island from three fishermen. It’s an interesting story as told by his oldest daughter Marilena. “The owners used to have a sister whom they couldn’t marry off because she didn’t have a dowry. Finally, with the money they got from selling the island they managed to do so. Back then there was only a praying altar, the small watchtower, stones and thistles. The priority was to plant the island and next, in 1960 the house and church were completed. My father was personally in charge of choosing the trees, mainly olive and cypress trees, and aligning them symmetrically”. Within just a few years the deserted island had turned into an eco-friendly paradise, which hosted, apart from the Papanikolaou family, political personas such as the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill, the Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie, the Saudi Arabian Minister of Oil (petroleum) Zaki Yamani, and even pop celebrities, such as the Beatles. Contrary to what a modern traveller would expect, the island offers no luxuries. There are no swimming pools, spas or tennis courts. Undoubtedly, the only true luxury it offers is complete tranquillity combined with impressive Mediterranean vegetation. The only contemporary buildings on this island are the plain, 4-bedroom beach house, situated in front of one of its sandy beaches, and another, smaller, 2-bedroom one for the staff. The Venetian observatory is an exception, having been converted by Marilena’s mother, a restless artist, into an art studio. It is not by rare chance that Spyros Vassiliou, one of the top Greek painters of the 20th century, was a frequent visitor. In fact, he painted some of the icons in the island’s chapel. The prevalent scent of capers and the sea breeze satisfy the olfactory senses. The sea in the gulf of Evia is unique: every six hours its waters are replenished by the tide. Hence, the northern sandy beach appears and disappears obeying the rules of nature. Nothing can perturb the constant come and go of seagulls, who along with various kinds of songbirds are the private island’s sole inhabitants. here are houses that are distinct for their architecture and houses that are distinct for their history. The Venetian Times estate merges those characteristics, whilst adding to the equation the unique factor of a magical location, making it truly one of a kind. The story in this seaside place in Kalami, Corfu, began some 600 years ago, when the noble Latin family of Quartano built there a fortress to protect the area from pirates. The fortress, later converted into a residence, was acquired during the 18th century by the Gennatas family. Ioannis Gennatas, a renowned lawyer, Minister of Justice of the first Greek Republic and one of the main founders of the Greek Law, did not only live in the house, but was also born there in 1777. Amongst the historic names who also lived in the property, is also the Agnelli family - FIAT founder, Giovanni Agnelli’s great granddaughter, Umberta dei baroni Nasi, who bought the house in 1988. The Venetian Times’ main house is perched on the shore of the fishing harbor of Kouloura, nestled in the dense Ionian flora which reaches the shore. Left

The property is surrounded by various trees and plants, including among others, magnolias, jacarandas, and more, which create cozy corners in the surrounding verandas - except the ones that offer an unobstructed, breathtaking sea view. For those seeking a quiet walk by the water on the jetty, a gate in the gardens offers direct access. With a history spanning through 6 centuries, it comes as no surprise that the estate’s history is reflected on its walls: Gennata family’s coat of arms decorates one of the entrances of the fortress, while a metallic plaque commemorates the visit of George I of Greece with his family at the house in 1908. Corfiot, Venetian and English characteristics of architecture and decoration, flourish the exteriors and interiors of the estate.
The main house, restored at the end of the 20th century, is built literally right next to the shore. Its entrance, introduces the visitor to the splendour of the residence from the very beginning. An old, wooden double door with heavy black iron hinges drives to the hall, a high-ceilinged total white room that adjoins the living room. There, a lavish geometrical ceiling steals the show, while the wooden kitchen with the hidden lighting, underlines the craftsmanship of the structure. On the first floor, two double and three twin ensuite bedrooms can host a large company of 10 people. On the level below, a separate flat comprised of two twin rooms, bathrooms and a kitchen, while a later constructed stone built guest house, offers more bedrooms and a living
room with unique natural lighting, thanks to its tall, arched, stained-glass windows. Five independent ensuite bedrooms are located in the guest house right outside the property, along with a tavern which is currently leased, and a 12th century church. Undoubtedly, one of the highlights of Venetian Times is the large infinity pool, which is built along the coastline, almost 10 meters above the sea level. The pool is surrounded by traditional stone masonry walls, patios and large spaces, ideal for receptions, or pool parties till morning; the sun rises every dawn above the mountains on the shore right across...

A long infinity pool with chaise-longues and a spacious patio with its own lounge are the perfect set for an all day relaxation. The overflow design of the pool completes the laid-back atmosphere. The latter is an element that fascinatingly appears throughout the residence, with the long corridor driving to the bedrooms creating an imposing feeling. The ceilings follow the tilt of the ground above, therefore, when moving forward into Gaia from the exterior, the height of the rooms increases, thus rendering it a minimalistic, cubic cave. And if the word cave implies less or no light, kindly reconsider: Gaia is equipped with large sliding windows and dormers, which bathe in light the interiors. The 10-meter wide window of the living room with no columns or other structural elements, creates a sensational frame of the Aegean sea. The built-in fireplace and the white grand piano complete the scene, acting as elements that can bring everybody in the house together. Right next to them, there is the adjoining dining
room and an open-plan kitchen area, which impresses with the long table which can seat up to 12 people. Indoor trees, planted in reservoirs within the floor of both spaces, bring nature literally in the house, while contributing to the renewal of the air’s oxygen. When opened, the big sliding windows disappear into the walls, seamlessly merging interior and exterior spaces and their activities. A lengthy pool, stretches along the facade ending in a rectangular built-in outdoor living area, with white pillows and cozy corners. The large surrounding allows a free placement of the pool chairs and a concrete pad in the pool, creates a floating illusion and serves as a more secluded spot only for two. Rejuvenation can also be found in the fitness room, the sauna, and even in the en-suite bathrooms, which are an entity of their own: Some of them
have the size of an actual room, trees, and big dormers on the roof that allow the precious natural light to enter. The whole experience resembles a super minimalist green house, where one can enjoy their most personal time. SARONIC GULF Idyllic islands at arm’s length from Athens. Take a trip to some of the most eclectic spots around the Saronic Gulf and discover why international jet setters, celebrities, tycoons and even royalty have been gracing the region for decades with their presence. Scattered just a couple of hours from Athens and easily accessible by land or sea, the dazzling Saronic Islands have quite a reputation for attracting all those seeking exclusivity and quintessential Greek charm. From the pine-clad majesty of Spetses to the arty haven of Hydra and the très privé Porto Heli, many are those who have sought - and found - idyllic spots in which to relax, find inspiration and rediscover the art of joie de vivre. Spetses has a history going back to the days of the Venetians and its refined reputation was enhanced by the opening of the elegant Poseidonion Grand Hotel, which has served as a magnet for wealthy Athenians and distinguished guests for over a century. Greek shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos acquired the islet next to it, creating a new cosmopolitan hub for the in-crowd, who continue to flock there today, either to simply park their superyachts or to take part in the annual Classic Yacht Regatta. Hydra pulls in the boho-chic crowd and art aficionados, with its amphitheatrical harbour provoking a real sense of awe. It’s no coincidence that Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagal and Leonard Cohen spent time there, the natural beauty of the shimmering island acting as a muse for their artistic creations. From rock stars, such as the Rolling Stones, to opera divas like Maria Callas, Hydra has managed to enchant visitors with its endearing landscapes and close proximity to the capital. Both car-free and uber-stylish, Spetses and Hydra are a double delight for those seeking something extra special. The unassuming, little coastal town of Porto Heli on the mainland, however, has managed to retain a subtle nonchalance, while actually being home to the likes of Sean Connery, Roman Abramovic and the former King of Greece Constantine II. Classy, palm-tree shaded mansions, hugging their own private beaches, sit hidden away from hip luxury hotels like Amanzoe and Nikki Beach, but you won’t find much more name-dropping at Porto Heli. Here, life is slow, serene and very, very incognito. Whether one is looking for a quick cosmopolitan day trip, an exclusive weekend escape, or an elegant retreat, the Saronic Gulf is just at arm’s length away from Athens and well worth a visit!

mykonos With its reputation for being a party paradise, favoured by celebrities and international A-listers, Mykonos is a small island in the Cyclades which has acquired a big reputation over the past few decades.
A summer destination, a mere 40-minute flight from Athens, which offers beautiful beaches, frenzied nightlife, high-end restaurants and superb accommodation ranging from cliff-top villas to boho boutique hotels. This is also an island with a strong LGBT culture and a destination where anyone who is someone has a designer villa, or at least knows where the most exclusive hotels are. Fashionistas and socialites fly in discreetly and stay in privé hideaways or hang out in their super yachts in one of the island’s well-known bays, while paparazzi bring out the telescopic lenses for superstar headshots.
The Jenners and Hadids can be seen vying for attention with the likes of the ultra-rich, be that footballers like Ronaldinho, fashion icons like Georgio Armani or Hollywood stars like Hugh Jackman. Paradise and Super Paradise beaches are the places to hang out while Ornos, Psarou and Platis Yalos are also known for being celebrity faves, surpassing the now très passé Ibiza. Dining is an elevated pastime on Mykonos, with all-day restaurants like Scorpios offering chilled-out cabana style ambience and fresh seafood, while Interni is for cosmopolitan foodies who like to overindulge on ceviche and champagne.
Matogianni Street boasts designer boutiques and chic cafés, while the scenic waterfront spot known as ‘Little Venice’ sports colourful verandas hanging over the lapping waves. Mykonos offers a myriad of experiences and a wander through its pretty bougainvillea bedecked alleyways evokes a real sense of island life mixed with sophisticated vibes.

Sit under the grand terrace with a pergola of the upper lever and enjoy the company of your friends, or detect the scents of thyme that come from the nearby wild fields, or dive into the infinity pool, which is oriented towards the sunset. Entering the property and going towards the sea, you will encounter the stone-covered parking area. A stone stairway, surrounded by aromatic plants, leads to the upper apartment, which is at the same level with the pergola area and the swimming pool. Lie down on the warm, teak sun loungers and the teak sofa of the swimming pool for a perfect suntan. The outdoor main stairway leads to 3 spacious guesthouses and a stonebuilt room on the ground level surrounded by a veranda. The property is found in a wonderfully quiet and serene surrounding, cradled by the sound of the sea; it makes the perfect location to enjoy a romantic lunch or dinner. Luxury and wilderness are combined at this natural labelled landscape of the island, where no new construction is now allowed. It combines the quite primitive aspect of the Cyclades, while being minutes away from the celebrity nightclubs and restaurants, widely found in Mykonos town. The property was chosen among many other international prospects by Louis Vuitton for a cruise collection catalogue. Property ID: B2PJVS 6 Beds / 5 Baths, 380 sq.m., Land Size: 7,800 sq.m., Price:

CORFU “Somewhere between Calabria and Corfu the blue really begins… you are aware of a change in the heart of things: aware of the horizon beginning to stain at the rim of the world: aware of islands coming out of the darkness to meet you”. So begins Lawrence Durrell’s 1945 ode to Corfu, Prospero’s Cell. Even today, visitors to the island often arrive by sea, approaching from Italy in the west, or the Greek mainland in the east. Emerging in the early morning sunshine, the pastel-hued houses above Corfu town’s old port are a jumble of slim tiers with narrow passages running between them, made brilliant with washing hung out to dry from every balcony, like festive bunting. The tall, Venetian mansions display ancient coats of coloured paint, blurred by successive winters, and giving visitors to the town the feeling of stepping into a watercolour painting. The town is centred on a wide, tree-lined esplanade called the Spianada, whose French arcades echo the Rue de Rivoli. A drop of Britishness is to be found on the noble sweep of this square, which is transformed into a cricket pitch throughout the summer - the world’s only sports field in-use within a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Meanwhile, the Corfiot countryside boasts an elegiac greenery, unrivalled across Greece, contrasting remarkably with the solemn barrenness of the Aegean. Bathed in brilliant, white sunlight throughout the summer months, the winter rains ensure a sublime frondescence across the island, with the inland valleys thickly carpeted with wild flowers, studded with gnarled olive trees and dense groves of stiffly swaying cypresses. The sophisticated north-east is known as Kensington-on- Sea, and is the site of the Rothschild family’s imposing summer villa. It is here that the luxury villa lifestyle comes into its own, with the hillsides sprinkled with secluded, high-end properties, boasting private infinity pools and awe-inspiring sea views, with the snowcapped Albanian-Epirote mountains rising mysteriously in the east.

Grand Marine corfu
With infinite attention to detail, respect for tradition but also with imagination, innovation and the power of modern technology, Grand Marine is set on a 2-acre clifftop site, with private seafront access. Grand Marine, virtually glass-walled along its entire frontage, overlooks the sea, east to the coast and the mountains of Albania, with the magical site of ancient Butrint in full view, and south to mainland Greece and the islands of the Ionian. This is one of the Mediterranean’s most sublime views, where two entirely different cultures face each other, as if they were simply on opposite sides of a shimmering lake. Everything about the house is designed for comfort and space, its contemporary design highlighted here and there by the skilful use of traditional artefacts from India and Morocco, with some examples of Colonial living, such as a plantation ceiling fan that is a work of art in its own right. The dramatic entrance to the villa opens into a spacious sitting room, with oak floors and exposed ceiling beams, where a plantation ceiling fan strikes an unusual note. The ceiling is lit with linear LED up lighting, remote-controlled electric curtains that, when necessary, shade the windows with their breathtaking view, south down the Corfu Channel and east to ancient Butrint. The sitting room is tastefully and comfortably furnished with a discreet palette of muted colours that allow the view to be the dominant feature. There are 7 air-conditioned bedrooms suites in all, all en-suite and equipped with super king-sized beds, two of which can be made up as twins if desired and all with dressing rooms. All bedrooms are furnished with particularly comfortable beds with bespoke padded headboards, matching seating and the 4 main bedrooms have a TV.

Whether you wish to enjoy al fresco meals or refreshments, as a couple or in company, your needs are amply provided for, with exceptionally comfortable seating, shade and sun. Rhodes Stretching almost 50 miles from Rhodes town in the northeast, to Prasonisi in the southwest, the island is over 200 miles from the Greek mainland, but only 11 miles from the southern shores of Turkey. This extreme location lends Rhodes an exotic air, and a plethora of different cultures have left their unique mark on the island. A short stroll in the UNESCO protected Old Town unveils the echoes of this historical melting-pot of civilisations, from the imposing medieval Grand Master’s Palace to the delicate Suleymaniye Mosque, juxtaposed with the elegant Jewish Quarter and the surprising Italian colonial architecture of the New Town. A cosmopolitan city, Rhodes town plays host to a never-ending rosta of cultural events, cafés, restaurants and bars, and retains its liveliness, even in the winter period. Dinner at the exclusive Marco Polo Mansion is a memorable event, housed in a 15th century Ottoman townhouse, belonging to a prominent Milanese artist and collector. Come sunset, the cream of Rhodian society gathers at Mavrikos in Lindos, ordering up plates of fresh sea urchin pasta and lobster risotto. Meanwhile, roof-top dining at the Melenos Hotel is an experience like no other. During the summer months, take a front row seat for views of the Aegean and Lindos Acropolis, or recline in the intimate interiors of the indoors Fouli Restaurant during the winter - either option guarantees an elegant evening of premium food, drink and people-watching. The windward northern coastline is a noted location for windsurfing and other water-sports, and, come summer, it becomes the meeting point for water-sports enthusiasts from around the world. Kite-surfers will love Prasonisi, a remote cape on the island’s most westerly corner and home to the Prasonisi Kitesurf Centre. Prasonisi’s constant cross-shore winds make it one of the top water-sport destinations in Europe: from one side the strong waves of the Aegean Sea are a draw for top-level surfers, whilst on the opposite side, the softer currents of the Mediterranean are perfect for beginners.

Paros A medium sized island, Paros is a pleasingly round shape, formed by a single mountain, sloping gently down on all sides towards the sea. Just a 3-4-hour ferry trip from Athens, or a short 40-minute flight from Athens to Paros National Airport, the island is well connected and centrally located within the Aegean, making it the perfect choice for international visitors, all year long. Peaceful throughout the winter, Paros bursts into life come summer, with countless boutiques, cafĂŠs, artisan workshops and traditional shops opening their doors to visitors from the Greek mainland and beyond. Despite its role as a popular tourist destination, Paros has managed to preserve its local spirit in a way some other islands have not. Traditional houses are whitewashed, with blue doors and window-frames, whilst larger buildings may have beautiful private gardens, filled to the brim with fragrant orange trees and vibrant bougainvilleas. The first choice for the smart set is Naousa, a typical Cycladic settlement, filled with cobbled streets and simple, white buildings. The tiny harbour is home to countless traditional tavernas and ouzeries, whilst the sight of fresh octopus hung up to dry is a regular, ever-day occurrence. Gastronomy lovers are spoiled for choice at this culinary hotspot of the Aegean, with prestigious names including Barbarossa, Mario Restaurant and Le Sud, serving the freshest seafood all summer long. Naousa also boasts a vivid nightlife scene, from elegant city clubs and award-winning bars to traditional kafeneions and laid-back cafĂŠs.

skiathos The island of Skiathos is well known for its abundance of beautiful beaches, dense pine forests, bustling nightlife and influx of tourists, making it one of the most vibrant islands in the northern Sporades. Its picture-postcard architecture certainly has that ‘wow’ factor, with whitewashed little houses, red-tiled mansions, iconic churches and meandering alleyways, screaming traditional Cycladic style. It’s quite the Instagram-lovers paradise, due to its exotically emerald waters and, with over 60 immaculate beaches to choose from, where to start? Those in the know go for beaches like Koukounaries or Golden Sand in the southwestern part of the island, or hang out at Megali Ammos and Ahladies, where the crystal-clear waters are fringed by traditional tavernas. Water sports lovers head for fun friendly Banana Beach, while those seeking seclusion opt for the western coast or take a boat to pebbled Lalaria beach in the northeast. Since Mama Mia, Skiathos has never been the same - albeit in a good way. With several of the scenes being shot on the island, the celebrity interest seems to have risen in this charming getaway for Grecophiles. A walk around Papadiamanti Street may lead to bumping into the likes of Colin Firth, Tom Hanks or Goldie Hawn, giving the island that glamorous star status, without the noise factor. It’s all very low-key, and romantically quaint, something that seems to appeal to the rich who-don’t always-want-to-be-famous. On the other hand, party animals can find a wealth of venues where they can bop till they drop under the influence of chilled cocktails and hypnotic dance music, like Pure Club, Kahlua and the BBC Club, where all-nighters are the norm. Foodies gather at the main town to enjoy island tastes and modern trends, from seafood to top-quality meats, like Kivo Creative and Elia’s Restaurants, while Italian eateries such as La Cucina di Maria offer that extra Italian touch.

syros Sitting prettily right in the centre of the Cyclades, Syros is a sophisticated island, yet it remains unknown to most tourists and travellers. As the capital of the Cyclades, the island has a large local population, resulting in a buzzing social scene. The jewel in Syros’ crown is undoubtedly its capital, Ermoupoli. The city was founded during the Greek Wars of Independence in the 1820s and soon became the commercial and industrial centre of Greece, playing a more important role than Piraeus – after all, “Ermopouli” means “City of Hermes”, and Hermes was the god of commerce! Visitors today can wander the streets, admiring the imposing neoclassical architecture and enjoying the town’s aristocratic atmosphere, elegant cafés and upmarket boutiques. Due to the city’s importance (it is home to the region’s courts and public offices), Ermoupoli is a thriving town, even in the winter months, making it unique in the Aegean as an excellent option for yearround living. Gastronomy on Syros is a strong rival to any found on Mykonos or Santorini – as an island with a year-round population, the restaurants rely on local customers rather than tourists, so have to serve top-quality food. The island was historically populated with refugees from Asia Minor, a group renowned for their culinary skills, which still filters through today. Local specialties include the tooth-achingly sweet loukoumi, with its rainbow of flavours and fillings. Outside of the capital, Syros is dotted with the usual Cycladic villages and beaches – pictureperfect Kini is one of the best in the Aegean, with its un-spoilt beach and laid-back atmosphere. Meanwhile, Finikias is the island’s yachting centre, with a contemporary marina, perfect for mooring or chartering sailboats.

tinos With its strong viticulture and world-class food, Tinos is an engaging place, with a lively and passionate local community, spread throughout its 50 picturesque villages. Just a 20-minute ferry ride from Mykonos, the island is worlds away from the hedonistic party scene, and is the perfect location for those looking for a more authentic Greek lifestyle experience. Tinos has recently started making waves on the international foodie scene, due to its unique landscape, producing world-class wines, herbs, honey and cheeses. However, it is already an undoubted leader in the realm of Greek wines. T-Oinos Wines is an organic vineyard, supplying high-end restaurants across Europe, including Alain Ducasse, whilst the Domaine de Kalathas is an off-grid vineyard, making use of 150-year-old ungrafted vines. In fact, this windswept island is said to be Greece’s new wine frontier, with its sandy soil protecting the local terroir from the phylloxera pest. Meanwhile, beer aficionados will love the multi-award-winning Nissos Microbrewery, open for tours and tastings throughout the summer. No place has a richer marble-crafting tradition than Tinos, and this glittering white stone is used throughout the island to a stunning effect. Discover Pyrgos, an iconic village, decorated throughout with intricate marble carvings and almost an outdoor museum in its own right. Be sure to explore the interior of the island, puzzling over the surreal lunar landscape of Volax and its mysterious, monumental boulders. Driving around the island, visitors will spot ornately decorated pigeon houses, dotted across the landscape. These date from the 17th century, when pigeons were a useful source of both meat and fertiliser! Sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the annual Tinos Challenge, a part of the Cyclades Trail Cup. Held in December, the event includes three demanding races, including a 20-km. trail, a mountainous sprint and a ‘mini challenge’. Tinos is also an ideal location for water sports - Kolybithra Beach on the northeast coast is a particular surfing paradise, with wild waves and strong meltemi winds throughout the summer months.

The writer Lawrence Durrell’s first brought Corfu into the contemporary limelight through his various works, while the Rothschilds enjoyed many summers there in their family villa. Lefkada is a ‘tropical’ paradise of never-ending white beaches and turquoise waters set against lush mountains. Claiming fame for one of the most instagrammed beaches ever at Porto Katsiki, the island is also a windsurfing and kitesurfing mecca. Add to that its prime location opposite the famed Scorpios Island, once the private retreat of the Onassis family that is now transforming into an exclusive new development for the ultra-rich. Kefalonia shot to fame as the location of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and is a vibrant island for those seeking cafés, restaurants and bars set amongst picturesque traditional towns and villages, the most iconic of which is Fiscardo. Known as the ‘St Tropez of Kefalonia’, this small fishing village just oozes charm, making it a magnet for celebrities stopping off to savour the fresh lobster dishes served in its string of inviting waterfront restaurants. Zakynthos, or Zante as it is called, is home to the spectacular Navagio Beach and is also considered to be a paradise for scuba divers with its labyrinth of underwater caves. Quintessentially Greek in culture and beauty (the islanders have a tradition of romantic serenading that remains till this day), Zakynthos frequently draws in yacht stopovers from celebrities like Jon Bon Jovi, Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas. Homeland of the legendary Odysseus, Ithaca is a haven for those seeking a peaceful retreat with undiscovered beauty marked by olive groves, cypress, pine, oak and carob trees. Drop anchor at the delightful Vathi Bay and rub shoulders with the likes of Steven Spielberg amongst other celebs, all seeking a small taste of this enchanting destination. Paxi has no airport, keeping it exclusive and unspoilt. A favourite with high-society Italians like the Agnelli family of FIAT, those visiting Paxi usually moor in the emerald straits and simply enjoy the mesmerising setting. Ravishing beaches and verdant vistas make this a darling of the super yacht crowd.
