Over 450 head of slaughter cattle, with the market steady or higher in all classes of cattle as compared to last week. Bulls continued to climb and sold about $5 higher than last week. Demand for lean cows, both beef and Holstein, was steady in comparison to last week and perhaps was $1-2 higher for the moderately framed lean cows. Demand for fleshy cows was steady as compared to last week as well. We saw a lot of overlap in prices between lean and fleshy cows, which when combined with the higher prices today for bulls, shows the lean market is holding very strong. Lean Holsteins sold better than fleshy and ranged $99.00-106.00, fleshy Holsteins $97-104.00. Holsteins who were thinner but still had good body condition averaged around $96.00. Lean beef cows ranged $98.00-113.50, fleshy beef cows $98.00-113.00. Today’s beef sale included very nice grain fed cows and heiferettes ranging from lean to fleshy from Kremmling, and fleshy cows from Roggen and LaSalle. Lean Holstein cows with excellent body condition out of Loveland and Carpenter, WY sold well. Red hided feeders from Altamont UT were highlights of the feeder sale.

Western Slope Cattlemen’s is glad to announce the first auction to “SEND A COW TO COLLEGE.” This program, sponsored by a joint effort between local cattle producers, CMU & WCCC, is to raise scholarship money for Ag students at these schools. The producers will donate animals, with the proceeds going to help students in Agriculture pay for tuition. The first auction will be held February 18th @ 1:00pm during the regular cattle auction at Loma.
