WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2015 SHEEP AND LAMB AUCTION STATE AND FEDERAL REPORTING Compared to last week: Slaughter lambs traded sharply higher on comparable tests. Feeder lambs did not have enough receipts to make a comparison. Slaughter ewes traded mostly steady with instances of 2.00 – 7.00 higher. Slaughter kids traded steady to sharply higher on a low number of receipts this week. Trade activity was light to moderate and buyer demand was good. In the sheep supply 21% slaughter lambs, 1% feeder lambs, 70% slaughter ewes and bucks and the balance replacement ewes. The goat supply consisted of 69% slaughter kids, 18% slaughter nannies and the balance slaughter billies and wethers. Sheep and lambs sold on a per cwt basis and goat sold on a per head basis unless otherwise noted.

Wednesday, February 25, 2015 Around 500 head of slaughter cattle sold today, with the market strong in all classes. Demand for lean cattle, especially was very strong.

Bulls were steady in comparison to last week and averaged around $135.

There was a very nice set of lean, black beef cows from Windsor who topped the market in today’s beef sale. Overall, beef cows brought about $10 higher than last week. Thin beef cows ranged $98.50-109.

Lean beef cows ranged $106.50-120.00, fleshy beef cows $117.50121.50. The Holstein market was also strong in comparison to last week and again demand for lean cows superseded that for fleshier cows. Overall the Holstein cow market was $8 higher than last week.

Lean Holsteins ranged $102.00-115.50, fleshy Holsteins $102.50-115.50.

Holsteins who were thinner but still had good body condition hovered right around $100.00.
