SPECIAL HOLSTEIN/HOLSTEIN CROSS STEER AUCTION STATE AND FEDERAL REPORTING Compare to last month: Holstein steers weighing under 400 lbs traded 10.00 – 20.00 higher. Holstein steers weighing over 400 lbs traded mostly 3.00 – 7.00 higher on comparable sales. Trading activity was active on very good buyer demand.

The U.S. Cattle Inventory report showed a 2% decline in total inventory. It also revealed that beef producers are taking a step towards herd expansion, as heifer retention was up 2%. As a result, demand for Holstein steers is very good with feeders looking to capitalize on record high fat cattle prices and maintain feedlot inventories. The supply consisted of about 91% Holstein steers, 5% Jersey steers and the remaining balance being Holstein heifers. About 24% of the supply weighed over 600 lbs. Next Holstein feeder cattle sale with he held on Monday. April 7, 2014.

STATE AND FEDERAL REPORTING Compared to last week: Slaughter lambs traded mostly 15.00 – 20.00 higher. Feeder lambs were thinly traded, but mostly 5.00 – 10.00 higher on comparable sales. Slaughter and feeder lambs trended down as the sale went on due to decreased buyer interest. Slaughter ewes and bucks traded 5.00 – 10.00 higher with increased buyer demand as the sale progressed. All goat classes are compared to a very thin test a few weeks ago. Kid goat traded 5.00 – 10.00 higher. Nannies/ does and slaughter bucks traded 20.00 – 25.00 higher. Trade activity was slow on good to very good buyer demand. There was not enough replacement sheep or goats to quote or trend.

In the sheep supply 26% slaughter lambs, 43% slaughter ewes and bucks, 21% feeder lambs, with the balance being replacement ewes. The goat supply consisted of 63% slaughter kids, 29% slaughter nannies and 8% slaughter billies and wethers. Sheep and lambs sold on a per cwt basis and goats sold on a per head basis unless otherwise noted.

Slaughter cow numbers are at their typical seasonal lows and the cattle on feed report indicated that producers are beginning to rebuild their herds which will limit supplies further. As a result, buyer demand is very good for slaughter cows and bulls as packers are trying to stay ahead of inventory levels on a tight supply.

Today’s special sale brought replacement quality feeder heifers, bred cows, feeder steers, and heiferettes, in addition to the regular slaughter sale. Represented were 31 bred cows, 53 bulls, 398 fat and slaughter cows, 745 feeders and 32 heiferettes. Slaughter bull prices continued to climb to previously unseen prices- lean muscled slaughter bulls ranged from 124.50-130.00! Bred cows averaged near $1800/head for the top 15. Supreme quality fat beef cows were brought in from gill and roggen, ranging from $111.50-119.00. Heiferettes were of excellent quality overall, and raged from 115.00-144.00. Slaughter holstein cows commanded very respectable prices with fat cows ranging from 100.00-109.00 And lean cows in the $90’s. Quality steers from ault, woodruff ut, panaca nv, and grover as well as replacment quality heifers from woodruff ut, hillsdale wy, and ault were represented today as well.
