T
he Nebraska State Fair will launch two new open cattle shows in 2014. The first is the Open Junior Breeding Heifer Show, which will be held Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 4 p.m. in the Five Points Bank Arena. This show will be open to any junior exhibitor who is enrolled in 4-H or FFA or is a member of a junior breed association. Nebraska residency is not required. The entry fee is $25 per head and the entry deadline is Aug. 10. Go to the State Fair website — www.statefair.org — for entry information. Registration papers must be in the sole name of the exhibitor at least 30 days prior to the start of the Fair. Original papers must be available for inspection at the show. Junior breeding heifers may also be exhibited in the Open Breeding Cattle classes with an additional fee as well
as the Open Class Jackpot Feeder & Breeding Calf Show. There is no limit to the number of animals an exhibitor may enter in this division. Substitutions within the same class and same owner only will be accepted until Aug. 15. Classes for this initial year will be available for Angus, Charolais, Gelbvieh/Balancer, Hereford (polled and horned show together), Limousin (Limousin and Limflex show together), Red Angus, Shorthorn and Simmental (purebred and percentage show together) females. There will also be an Other Breeds division for those breeds not listed. If any breed fails to have 10 entries, those heifers will be placed into the Other Breeds division. Within each breed there will be a Cow/Calf class. The calf must be halter broke. Calf must be the cow’s most recent natural calf and be no more than 280 days of age on the day of the show. Calf must be bred and owned by the junior exhibitor. There will also be an all breed showmanship class. Pre-entry is required, but no entry fee is required.

Premiums will be $50 for first, $40 for second and $30 for third place. A breed champion will receive $75 and a reserve breed champion will receive $50. Following the individual breed shows there will be an overall Supreme Champion Junior Breeding Female, which will pay $400 and a Reserve Supreme Champion Junior Breeding Female will pay $250. • In addition to the Junior Breeding Heifer Show, 2014 will mark the first time exhibiting for Miniature Herefords at the Nebraska State Fair. Miniature Herefords are a smaller version of the Hereford Breed and are registered in the American Hereford Association Register. The Miniature Herefords have been shown all over the country in some of the largest livestock shows, including the National Western Stock Show in Denver, the North American International Livestock Show in Louisville, Ky., the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, the Iowa State Fair and the Star of Texas State Fair. Maximum hip height to be shown is 48 inches for mature bulls and 45 inches for mature females. The Miniature Hereford breed is a large favorite of the American public no matter where they are shown. The cattle will be in the barns Tuesday, Aug. 26 through Thursday, Aug. 28. Their show will be on Wednesday, Aug. 27. For more information on these or any other livestock events, go to the State Fair website, at www.StateFair.org, or contact the Nebraska State Fair Livestock Department at (308) 384-0624.
‘NO LINES ... NO WAITING ... NO WRISTBANDS’ The Nebraska State Fair is once again attempting to make the fairgoer experience better by eliminating the need for wristbands for concerts. According to State Fair executive director, Joseph McDermott, “This has long been a source of feedback from concertgoers who are unable to take time off work to stand in line to receive their wristbands.” He said, “Through technology, we are now able to replace the free wristband program with a reserved seat ticketing program for a small convenience fee.” McDermott says, “We always listen to our fairgoers, and we try to respond in a manner that’s quick, efficient and effective. For instance, we continue to add more seating and picnic tables every year—and we add shaded areas and air conditioning so families can get some respite from the heat. These continue to be priorities from fairgoer feedback. Likewise, McDermott says, “The move to a reserved seating ticket system has been discussed for some time, and now we’re able to move forward. The Nebraska State Fair has formed a new partnership with Etix.com to provide all ticketing including reserved seat tickets for concerts.” “Concertgoers have had to stand in long lines waiting to receive a maximum of two free wristbands, and then waiting in line again for the appropriate time to enter the show. This wait can be as long as two hours ahead of
time,” McDermott said. “Standing in line in the weather and the inability for folks from out of town to make the trek to Grand Island has made the free wristband system obsolete for a great many of our concert goers.” With Etix.com as the Nebraska State Fair’s exclusive ticket seller, it creates an opportunity to get reserved seating tickets from the comfort of home for a $6 convenience fee per concert. Tickets will also be available at the Heartland Events Center in person or by phone. The tickets are sold on a first come/first served basis. McDermott says, “The move away from wristbands to reserved seat online ticketing through Etix.com is the answer for concertgoers who simply don’t have time to take away from their busy schedules. This is another instance in which the Nebraska State Fair is utilizing technology to enhance our guest experience.” There will be a total of 4 concerts with a $6 convenience fee per concert, and three concerts with reserved seat ticket and fees with prices beginning at $20 to be announced soon. Prices do not include gate. For additional information, “Like” the Nebraska State Fair on Facebook to hear about concert news first and look to media in your area for announcements of the 2014 Nebraska State Fair concert line-up.
THEME FOR 2014 ... ‘A BUMPER CROP OF FUN’ “A Bumper Crop of Fun” is the Nebraska State Fair’s new theme for 2014. Marketing and sponsorship director, Shaun Schleif, added that the new mission statement is: The Nebraska State Fair: The nation’s most innovative exhibition focusing on interactive agriculture and educational experiences promoting families, fun, and Nebraska pride. “The new theme is very forward thinking, while still incorporating the important features that have been part of the Nebraska State Fair’s fabric for the past 145 years,” Schleif said, adding, “This forward thinking involves taking the staples of the fair, and making everything more interactive, fun and technologically advanced.” The theme logo, designed by Barry Keller of Infuze Creative Marketing, incorporates livestock, grains, our agricultural roots and of course the carnival midway. All are integral parts of creating a one-of-a-kind experience for Nebraska families. Schleif said, “Our ultimate goal in everything we do is to provide a safe clean family event that allows everyone attending to learn something, see something and experience something new — to create new memories that last a lifetime. Most of all, we want everyone to have fun.” ❖
THE 2014 NEBRASKA STATE FAIR The 2014 Nebraska State Fair will run from Aug. 22 to Sept. 1, in Grand Island. Average attendance for the first weekend is 75,000 fairgoers, while Labor Day Weekend averages nearly 150,000 people. To learn more, go to www.StateFair.org.
