Wyoming State Fair set to celebrate 102nd year
Drill team performances by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are always a crowd favorite.
BY ROBYN SCHERER | KIOWA, COLO. (PHOTOS COURTESY OF JAMES GOODRICH
T
here are many fairs held throughout Wyoming, but none are as big as the Wyoming State Fair. Held from Aug. 9-16 at the Wyoming State Fairgrounds in Douglas, the fair offers a variety of events for attendees. “We think the Wyoming State Fair is pretty true and representative of the heritage of the state because of the networking amongst the exhibitors and attendees. It’s about agriculture and showmanship. Moreover, it’s about agricultural people, and it’s a gathering place. We have all of the standard things that you hear about — free entertainment, fair food and concerts, but the thing that we still have that is unique is the park-like setting and the laid back, slow paced family environment where people can come to just visit,” said James Goodrich, director of the Wyoming State Fair and Rodeo. The livestock shows offer competitions for youth in the market classes, and competition for adults in the open breeding classes. Youth can compete in market hogs, lambs, goats and cattle. Open exhibitors can compete in a variety of different breeds for cattle, sheep and goats. Youth exhibitors can also exhibit animals in the open breeding classes. The market goat show will be held on Aug. 12, and the market swine show will be held on Aug. 14. The market lamb show will be held on Aug. 15, and the market beef show will be held on Aug. 16. All of the grand champion selections will take place on the day of the show. The 4-H Dog show will take place on Aug. 11, as well as the start of the Youth Horseman competitions.
“We have a big focus on the youth. We have dormitories and a cafeteria for the 4-H and FFA exhibitors, where they can stay for free, due to the sponsorship of Cameco Resources. The cost for a lot of people to attend an event and be able to stay in a hotel and eat in a restaurant for that length of time, there are a lot of our attendees that wouldn’t be able to do that because of cost,” said Goodrich. Last year more than 500 youth competed at the fair. The open class sheep show will be held on Aug. 16, and open class beef cattle shows will be held throughout the duration of the show. The open boat goat show will be held on Aug. 9, and the dairy goat show will be held on Aug. 10. The fair is always striving to be better, and this year the commercial heifer show will be a little different. It will be moved to Friday, Aug. 15, and there is going to be a steak grilling competition in conjunction with that. That is an invitation event,” said Goodrich. The fair is about more than competing, however. It’s also about connecting. “The Wyoming State Fair gives youth and residents from around the state an opportunity to educate, learn and showcase their quality animals and exhibits. It also gives everyone who attends a chance to spend time with others from around the state to reconnect, share ideas and create new friendships. From young to old, there is truly something here for everyone in the family,” said Jason Fearneyhough, Director, Wyoming Department of Agriculture. In addition to the livestock shows, the fair also offers concerts, rodeos, a demolition derby, and many other daily events.

FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT WWW.WYSTATEFAIR.COM The antique tractor show is a popular event. A family poses with their antique tractor at the fair.
Several young kids talk with a Wyoming military person at the State Fair.
“The Wyoming State Fair staff and numerous others have worked hard to make the 102nd celebration an experience to remember. Countless hours have been spent planning the event and preparing the grounds for the best possible experience at the Wyoming State Fair,” said Fearneyhough. He continued, “This year’s theme is “A Wyoming Cowboy Tradition” and we have many special events planned. From the Demolition Derby to the State Ranch Rodeo Finals, and concerts by country stars Trace Adkins and Chris Cagle, we have grandstand events for everyone. Along with this, you can also attend our three PRCA events — Extreme Bulls and the Friday night and Saturday afternoon rodeos that always provide great rodeo action at an affordable cost.” One popular event in its second year is called Dock Dogs. “It’s for both professional and amateur diving dogs. They dive off the dock into a large pool and they compete for distance. Some people have dogs who do it on a circuit, and people with dogs who have never done it can come. It was very popular last year,” said Goodrich. There have been many improvements on the fairgrounds the last several years. “We have worked hard to continually improve the State Fair facilities and grounds since the very first State Fair. Specifically, over the last several years there have been multiple upgrades and renovations made to the Wyoming State Fairgrounds. These renovations provide more functionality and events during the fair, and throughout the year. I hope you all take the time to see these renovations during your visit and enjoy everything we have to offer,” stated Fearneyhough.
Most of the construction is complete. “We’ve been in a construction and improvement phase for seven to eight years now. This year we don’t have any big changes in construction. The repeatability of traffic and schedule from one year to the next is a big plus,” said Goodrich. They have also added a new small animal area this year. “We are in the process of getting those cages installed and making that a separate area. It will be dual purpose. For kids that are here with rabbits and poultry, it will give them a place to keep their animals for the rest of the week, and it will give us more of a chance to display small animals. We haven’t been able to do that in the past,” he said. The Wyoming State Fair started in 1886 in an event called the “First Annual Wyoming Territorial Fair” conducted by the Board of Trustees of the Wyoming Fair Association. The Wyoming State Fair provides education, competition, and entertainment by showcasing Wyoming youth and the products, services and innovations of agricultural and non-agricultural industries with an educational and competitive environment; and by providing an annual quality entertainment package, which appeals to a wide variety of clientele. “We work hard on providing families of the state wholesome, fun and educational experiences and entertainment while maintaining the culture, heritage and youth competition that makes the Wyoming State Fair great. We are excited to bring you another event while we look toward the promising future of the Wyoming State Fair for generations to come,” said Fearneyhough. ❖

2014 legislative push leads to needed Colorado State Fair facility upgrades

xpect a few upgrades in the near future at the Colorado State Fair, thanks to the recent efforts of Colorado lawmakers. Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper spent May signing a number of bills, among them was House Bill 14-1300 — sponsored by Rep. Leroy Garcia, D-Pueblo, and Crisanta Duran, D-Denver, which would allocate $300,000 for renovations and improvements for facilities and programs at the Colorado State Fair that benefit 4-H clubs and the Future Farmers of America. The bill calls for transferring the money from the general fund to the State Fair Authority Cash Fund to renovate and improve a pair of dilapidated dormitories at the State Fairgrounds that are used throughout the year by state 4-H clubs and the Colorado branch of the FFA. The money also will be used to install new air fans in the Livestock Pavilion and the Palace of Agriculture, add a new sound system for the Livestock Pavilion and purchase new portable goat pens. The bill was carried in the Senate by Sen. Pat Steadman, D-Denver. “We all know how important the state fair is to Pueblo and Southern Colorado,” Rep. Garcia said after Hickenlooper signed the bill in May. “These facilities and programs will ensure that the next generation of farmers, ranchers and other rural Coloradans will have the resources they need to be successful.” The legislative support and funding comes as a relief to fair organizers. In January, an audit presented to a legislative committee showed that the Colorado State Fair was losing $2.8 million a year and could no longer afford to continue without an injection of cash. As a result, the legislature was
asked to pony up more money to keep the fair going, along with finding new streams of earned income and donations. While the 11-day fair itself turns a profit, the yearround staffing, operations and maintenance at the 80-acre fairgrounds and buildings in Pueblo County push the budget into the red, explained Jeff Stalter, the director of budget and business operations for the Colorado Department of Agriculture, which oversees the fair. According to the Denver Post, the Colorado State Fair has lost money for a decade, but in the past budget year lost $400,000 more than the previous year and had to get a loan from the state treasury, the audit noted. Liabilities now exceed assets by more than $600,000, and the fair is “unable to absorb future losses,” auditors concluded. The fair already gets $2 million from state and local subsidies and attracts about 500,000 visitors each year. In addition to existing subsidies, the fair is funded by gate receipts, space rental, sponsorships, parking fees, a share of the take from carnival ticket sales, as well as sales of concessions. Its losses include about $450,000 in free events and programs for 4-H and Future Farmers of America students, said John Salazar, the state agriculture commissioner. However, in return, the state receives an estimated $33 million economic impact from the event. In addition to being pleased with the state’s approved funding injection, State Fair General Manager Chris Wiseman said he was impressed with the margin of victory HB 14-1300 gained. “I am elated with the strong support shown by the 28-7 vote,” he told the Pueblo Chieftain, when referring to the margin by which the measure was passed by the Colorado Senate. HB 14-1300 also passed by a wide margin in the Colorado House, with a 47-17 vote. “This shows the statewide support the Fair has in the Legislature.” ❖
THE COLORADO STATE FAIR The 2014 Colorado State Fair is set for Aug. 22-Sept. 1 at the State Fairgrounds in Pueblo. Tickets for the Colorado State Fair go on-sale June 7 at 10 a.m. For more information please visit www.ColoradoStateFair.com.
STATE FAIR WON’T BE CASHLESS THIS YEAR Organizers say the cash-free system that debuted at the Colorado State Fair last year is too expensive to be brought back this year, according to an Associated Press report earlier this year. Last year, fair-goers were able to use pre-loaded smart cards to buy snacks, drinks and tickets to shows at the fairgrounds in Pueblo. Fair general manager Chris Wiseman said Wednesday the California-based vendor Cashless earned about $60,000 by charging users $1 per card in fees. Wiseman says Cashless presented a proposal that would boost its earning close to $200,000 this year. He says officials want to cut the costs to fairgoers this year. Wiseman says he would like to bring back a cashless system, but is not sure when that will be possible.
FAIR WANTS TO CUT ELECTRICITY BILL The Colorado State Fair wants to reduce its electricity costs as its utility bill surges toward $1 million a year. The Pueblo Chieftain reported in April the fair’s managers say electricity is the main cause of the soaring costs. The fair’s overall utility bill has already exceeded $815,000, and the fiscal year doesn’t end until July. Electricity alone cost more than $500,000 through March 31. Joe Dean, director of fairgrounds facilities, says he will meet with representatives of Black Hills Energy, the fair’s electricity supplier, to discuss options. Dean says Black Hills will do an energy audit of the fairgrounds, which could find potential savings.
