Why small businesses need to think big this summer hiring season BRANDPOINT MEDIA
F
inding great employees hasn’t been easy for small businesses lately. And this summer, the competition could heat up even more. Thanks to a healthy economy, unemployment levels are low across the country. Many companies will be adding even more jobs as the weather warms up — especially those in seasonal industries such as tourism and hospitality, and other professions that are weather-dependent. While some of these positions may be filled by new graduates, this year employers can expect a fight for top candidates in any role. Small businesses in particular will feel the brunt of the hiring squeeze, as they often can’t match the compensation and benefits offered by their larger competitors. This forces them to get creative to attract and retain the best.
One way many businesses get a leg up on their competition is with a small-business loan. Companies like Funding Circle offer working capital loans that allow businesses to get fast, affordable financing to expand their teams and achieve their goals. Here are three more tips that can help small businesses gain an edge this summer: HIRE STRATEGICALLY What are the different seasonal roles you need? While many businesses will be hiring for customer-facing positions, don’t stop your planning there. It may be worth taking the time to ensure your systems, website and marketing campaigns are up to snuff too as you head into a summer rush. With today’s gig economy, it’s
easier than ever to hire high-quality, professional seasonal employees like web designers, marketing managers and accountants on an independent contractor basis. You should also be creative about how you find the right candidates. Online, think carefully about the job description you post. It shouldn’t just be a list of responsibilities, but a chance to market your company to your future hire. Offline, get your current employees to help with the search by offering a recruiting bonus. And rethink your preconceptions about what work actually needs to be performed onsite - roles like administrative support, marketing and bookkeeping can now be done remotely with ease, which can widen your talent pool and be more appealing to prospective »SMALL continued on page 2. applicants.

Business travel on the rise for women

Road warrior gives 5 tips for traveling like a boss BRANDPOINT MEDIA
W
hen it comes to business travel, more women are taking to the road and sky to get to their destinations. In fact, women account for 47 percent of all business travel worldwide, reports the Global Business Travel Association. With female business travel on the rise, many brands are taking note of this growing consumer group. This year, Hertz is continuing its heritage of supporting the needs of female road warriors through awardwinning customer service with its new “Her in Hertz” campaign. Before your next trip, take note of these savvy travel tips and expert advice from frequent traveler Kristina Portillo, founder of Business-TravelLife.com.
traveler, I need brands that have earned my trust and provide dependable, consistent service. That is why I choose Hertz, a six-time consecutive winner of the annual Women’s Choice Award.” CARRY-ON ONLY “I save at least an hour by traveling with only a carry-on. If I were to check my bag, I would wait in line at the airport to check it (10 minutes), then wait for it to come to baggage claim (20 minutes) when I reach my destination, and then repeat when I fly home. Traveling with only a carry-on also significantly reduces my chances of luggage being lost.”
PLAN AHEAD “Productive business travel starts before I leave for the airport. I can save hours during my travel day by simply planning ahead and not wasting time. Many of my travel accessories never leave my luggage. I have two sets of chargers, headphones, toiletries, etc., so the ones in my bag stay in my bag. I also pack items I need during transit on top. I always travel with a few healthy snacks, so I don’t have to waste time finding snacks at airports.” CHOOSE RELIABLE BRANDS “In addition to planning ahead, who you chose for your business travel is equally important. As a mom and frequent business
JOIN TRAVEL LOYALTY PROGRAMS “Travel loyalty programs reward travelers for their business. These programs come with perks that make travel more efficient and enjoyable. Travel programs also reward their members with upgrades and expedited services (aka less time spent waiting in line).” DOWNLOAD AND USE TRAVEL APPS “Travel apps are a huge time saver. I use TripIt to organize my itinerary. I use OpenTable and TripAdvisor to find places to dine. And of course, I use airline, car rental and hotel apps during my trip. My airline app will allow me to check in online, serve as a mobile boarding pass and notify me of gate changes and delays. Many hotels now have apps that offer digital check-in and digital keys. “The goal of a productive business trip is to complete my work before I get home. Therefore, I channel my inner Rihanna and ‘Work, work, work’ as much as possible during my trip. Once I get through security, I find a quiet place to work (preferably a lounge). If my flight has Wi-Fi, I work during my flight. Even without Wi-Fi, I reply to email (they will send once I connect to Wi-Fi). Once I get to my hotel, I don’t turn on the TV unless I’m caught up on work. As we all know, watching TV is a major distraction and time suck. On the way home, I wrap up any reports and reply to necessary emails to close out my trip.”
DO EVERYTHING BY THE BOOK Before making any job offers, acquaint yourself with state and federal fair hiring practices and job discrimination laws — and know how to implement them.Questions about any employment laws related to seasonal employees? Talk to a lawyer. Second, make sure you’re correctly classifying your seasonal employees according to state and federal laws (part-time vs. full-time, contractor vs. employee). You could end up facing problems down the road, like being held liable for payroll taxes, if you’ve misclassified any workers. It’s also important to make sure you get all employment agreements in writing. A lack of written contracts, including work for hire or consulting agreements, is a common small-business mistake, and a little effort upfront can save you a lot of headaches later. BUILD YOUR EMPLOYER BRAND Right now, the best candidates can afford to be picky about where they work. Every employer has a reputation, and yours can either be a secret weapon or an Achilles’ heel in your hunt for new staff. Your employer brand encompasses all the ways your business is perceived by staff and applicants alike. This can be shaped by everything from the interview process to the perks you offer, your policies, working conditions, company values, culture and more. Ensure that you’re showing that your business is a great place to work, even if only for the summer. When done right, you’ll get good employees to come to you. STAY AWAKE!
Use these sleep tips to stay safe and productive at work BRANDPOINT MEDIA
I
t’s time for America’s workforce to wake up. If you are one of the tens of millions of adults sleeping fewer than seven hours each night — the amount recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) — you are likely jeopardizing performance, increasing accident risks and putting everyone in danger during commutes. Getting enough sleep every night is key to improving productivity, safety and quality of life. Here are some tips to make sleep work for you. DON’T BURN THE MIDNIGHT OIL Working late nights might impress your boss, but restricting your sleep can lead to trouble making decisions, solving problems, controlling emotions and more, severely affecting your productivity at work. The National Safety Council reports that workers who sleep fewer than six hours per night cost employers six days a year in productivity. SLEEP FOR SAFETY Workers who sleep less than six hours per night are also at higher risk for injury, according to the Sleep Research Society. Cognitive and motor performance impairments caused by sleep deprivation can be comparable to drinking alcohol. If you make it a daily priority to recognize the signs of fatigue before, during and after work, and refuse
to drive drowsy, you can reduce the risk of serious injury for yourself and others. This may be especially true if you work a job that involves manual labor or heavy machinery. STRATEGIES FOR NON-TRADITIONAL WORK HOURS Some of the more high-risk professions involve working irregular hours. Shift workers - who can be nurses, law enforcement officers, emergency responders, transportation operators and more - work overnight or early morning hours with irregular or rotating shifts, causing upheaval in the body’s circadian rhythm and natural sleep/ wake cycle. According to the AASM, shift workers may sleep up to four fewer hours per night than those working traditional hours, increasing the risk for injuries, accidents and drowsy driving. The CDC reports that serious long-term health problems are a concern, too.

However, there are ways for shift workers to combat this problematic sleep schedule. TIPS FOR ‘WAKE TIME’ • Avoid exposure to sunlight if you need to sleep during the day, and wear sunglasses if you must go outside. • Use moderate amounts of caffeine in the early part of your shift. • Use public transportation, rideshare or take a cab, or arrange rides from friends or family after a work shift. • Take a 20- to 30-minute nap during a work break or before a night shift. • Get help from a sleep specialist to reinforce your body clock with strategically timed bright light therapy. TIPS FOR ‘SLEEP TIME’ • Avoid caffeine and alcohol in the hours before you go to bed. • Plan for any major changes in your shift schedule by altering your
sleep time a few days in advance. • Try to keep the same schedule on workdays and days off and create an effective “wind down” routine before going to bed. • Keep your bedroom at a cool temperature, turn off all electronics and only do relaxing activities like reading or journaling. Use the National Healthy Sleep Awareness Project’s bedtime calculator, which helps you find your ideal bedtime based on when you need to wake up for work — even if that’s in the middle of the night. Getting at least seven hours of sleep isn’t just a matter of feeling alert for productivity and safety on the job; it’s a necessary component of good health and well-being. If you’re having trouble sleeping, you should talk to your doctor, who may refer you to a board-certified sleep medicine physician at an accredited sleep center for help. 5 Tips for Today’s Freelance Entrepreneur BRANDPOINT MEDIA
F
rom millennials who have been grinding away in the workplace for a few years to Gen Xers looking to move out of their cube, many have been intrigued by the possibility of freelancing. It means the freedom to set your own hours, to work closely with clients, to be your own boss and have greater control over your career. According to Forbes, there are 53 million freelancers in America today, and by 2020, it’s estimated that half of the workforce will be doing freelance work, whether full time, as a part-time gig or as their side hustle. Unlike a traditional job, where you generally don’t need to bring more than a packed lunch to work, freelancing requires a few essential tricks and tools to succeed. Whether you’re looking to start out or refresh your personal brand, homeworking experts cite five
important tips to help you succeed at the freelance game. 1. Manage your time. One of the best parts, and the most challenging parts, of freelancing is that you get to make your own schedule. Many find that they need some sort of structure in their day, and for this reason it’s important to have the right time management software. This will notify you of calls, deadlines, track how long you work on a project and more. 2. Get the right laptop. A laptop is your office, your meeting room, your library, your entertainment source and so much more, making it one of the most essential freelancing tools. It’s the lifeline between your business and your clients, so it’s critical to be sure you have the right one. A great option is the remarkably thin and light LG gram. This computing powerhouse comes in 13-, 14- and 15-inch screen
options and packs a battery that lasts over 16 hours. Each model weighs about two pounds and for small businesses looking for extra connectivity, LG’s commercial-grade model comes equipped with the Windows 10 Pro operating system. It’s fast, mobile and able to keep up with the daily demands and surprises of the freelancing life. 3. Use professional email and social media accounts. For all work-related correspondence and interactions, be sure to use a dedicated email account. This will make you appear more professional to prospective clients. You should also set up work-related social media accounts where you can post examples of work and professional insights and network. 4. Keep track of finances. For a lot of freelancers who are on the creative side of things, keeping track of finances can be a real challenge.
Not only do you have to manage invoices, expenses and make sure you’re getting paid, you also have to keep taxes in mind. That can be a lot of numbers to juggle. The right accounting software can greatly simplify this process and save you innumerable headaches. 5. Find the right space. While freelancing is largely a digital game, and requires the right laptop loaded up with the tools you need to manage your business, you still need to find the right place to work. Some work in a coffee shop and others require a dedicated home office. You might work best in a shared office space. The point is, it’s vital to figure out where you do your best work. The right software, running on the right computer, and a place you can work are the cornerstones of a successful freelance gig. From there, all that’s needed is your talent and determination!

New technology will define the BRANDPOINT MEDIA
FUTURE OF FARMING
W
hen you think of automated vehicles, you probably think of driverless cars. While that particular movement is certainly in the news, it’s not the only place where driverless technology is gaining momentum. Did you know that driverless technology innovations are occurring every day in agriculture as well? While most of us won’t see this technology since it’s confined to the farm, driverless tractors are poised to change the way our food is grown. THE RACE TO AUTONOMY Today’s driverless tractors still need an operator to keep the tractor on task. But for 20 years, farm equipment manufacturers have been working on building a precision platform with GPS navigation to provide tractors with pure selfdriving automation. The ultimate goal is to offer farmers driverless equipment that is smart - or autonomous - so it can perform tasks completely independent of human intervention. The farm equipment industry has spent a couple of decades moving toward developing autonomous equipment, and the race to commercially market that equipment has recently moved into high gear. In 2016, both New Holland and Case IH introduced autonomous tractor prototypes, which the companies are still testing in the field. At the same time, John Deere signaled its commitment to autonomous machinery when it
acquired Blue River Technology - a company that specializes in computer vision and machine learning, key technologies for developing smart farm equipment. THE DIGITAL COMPONENT In addition to performing the desired tasks, smart farm equipment also has the ability to capture vital data about the operation and how the land is being used. This data will be invaluable to farmers, according to Dan Burdett, global head of digital agriculture at Syngenta. “The driverless tractor and automated farm equipment will be able to record any field event, which is important for developing insights, such as calculating return on investment,” he says.
“Capturing timely and accurate data to document field applications for reports and stewardship requirements will also be possible.” Because various sensors, tools and artificial intelligence will automate data collection, Burdett says the data will “enable a whole new level of decision-making capabilities. Growers will benefit from all of it,” he says, adding that the adoption of digital technologies in the ag industry is inevitable and moving fast. “It’s escalating, and that’s driven partly by farm economics,” says Burdett. “It’s very important for farmers to know their numbers. Digital tools and information technology can help farmers be better business people.”
THE FUTURE OF AUTONOMY For many years, the components needed to bring autonomous vehicles to market were cost-prohibitive for ag manufacturers. But that is changing. Uber, Google and Tesla have made big investments in technology for their self-driving cars, which has substantially lowered the cost of some components that are also used in automated farm equipment. As more industries use these components, prices will drop further, placing autonomous technology within reach of farmers. The field of automated farm equipment is fertile, and it’s growing rapidly. To learn more about automated farm equipment and other agricultural trends, go to www. syngentathrive.com.

your increased expenditures, but it may not be quite enough to scale. If you’re looking for additional routes to cover costs without relying solely on your profits, there are a few options. Consider reaching out to supportive networks and financial institutions for loans and potential new investors. Some companies like Dell offer lines of credit to small business owners, enabling you to quickly get the equipment your business needs now, without heavy upfront cash outlays. Or consider leasing your hardware. Instead of tying up your capital in equipment acquisitions or utilizing bank loans, lease options allow you to pay for your IT needs in low monthly payments while retaining your cash for investing in higher return opportunities.

4 tips for scaling your small business BRANDPOINT MEDIA
A
s the U.S. economy continues to move at a healthy pace, many analysts are projecting a 2.5 percent growth for 2018, which would represent the best two-year run since 2005. A big contributor to this growth, and to the high U.S. consumer confidence, which reached a 17year high in Nov. 2017, were small businesses. And they remain well positioned to benefit from the current economic boom. To take advantage of the favorable economic environment, consider these four moves to set your small business up for success. 1. Leverage software to optimize efficiency While newer businesses can
make do with basic tools like spreadsheets, you’ll need more advanced software to manage operations successfully. For instance, automating your manual processes can help you run your business more efficiently and help grow your bottom line. Implementing a network of systems can exponentially increase communication and smooth workflows between growing teams. 2. Futureproof your hardware to avoid buying twice Having the right hardware can be one of the most important drivers of success. In fact, the right hardware means employees can do their jobs better and more efficiently, saving you capital and time.
Can your company’s existing tech handle your growing business? For instance, if you grow your website traffic, you’ll need more powerful servers and increased storage capacity. Having trouble assessing how your hardware needs might change down the road? Working with a tech-focused small-business adviser, such as the free program offered by Dell’s Small Business division, can help you avoid costly mistakes as you move your company into the next phase of growth. 3. Find free financial resources to aid growth When your business is on the up and up, the money coming in from increased sales will help cover
4. Build a team that will flex with your company When scaling your team, do not sacrifice company ideals just to increase head count. Maintaining the company culture will help keep your company focused on achieving its mission, ensure passion does not burn out and help with retention. Also, don’t overlook hiring to address the HR and operational management aspect of your business, as you can’t — and shouldn’t — do it all yourself. Tasks like payroll, onboarding and day-to-day work should be handled by a support team that lets you run the show and focus on the future. With consumer confidence high, your business has an opportunity to scale. Take solace knowing there are resources to help you navigate this complex process, and that you don’t have to do it all on your own — after all, you have enough on your plate as is.

Have allergies and headed to college? Here’s what you need to know. BRANDPOINT MEDIA
F
or millions of high school seniors, the summer after graduation is a full one. There is no shortage of parties, summer cookouts or afternoons spent by the pool. There’s a lot to look forward to — and a lot to prepare for. Going to college is the first time many young adults will be away from their parents and their home. With this newfound freedom comes new responsibilities, especially for those with allergies and asthma. “For most teens, going away to college marks their first time living on their own,” says allergist Bradley Chipps, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). “In addition to moving to a new place, many teens must learn to manage their own schedule, diet, exercise and health. Young people may find their allergies and asthma neglected due to other, seemingly more important demands for their time.” If you or someone in your family has allergies or asthma and is headed off to college this fall, here are five tips from ACAAI on how to prepare for the transition. 1. Make time now to see your allergist. Schedule an appointment with your allergist now to discuss plans for the fall. During this visit you should ask for a referral to an allergist close to where you’re going to college, as well as a complete copy of your records, including medications, lab work and allergy test results.
3. Set up a network. It’s easy to leave things to parents, but once you move out, you’ll need to take an active role in your health. Whether you’re going 100 or 1,000 miles away, you’ll need to contact school administrators to discuss necessary arrangements for your dorm room and meals. If you’re moving far from home, along with a new allergist, identify new primary care and specialty physicians, as well as a new pharmacy.
2. Start practicing good self-management. The best line of defense against allergy and asthma attacks starts with you! Know your triggers and always be aware of risk factors when you go into a new environment. Carry your asthma medications with you in case of a flare-up.
4. Talk to the folks who’ll make your food. If you have a food allergy, plan to talk to food handlers and ask about ingredients at every meal or snack. You probably already carefully read labels, but make sure your friends, roommate and resident adviser know about

your food allergies. It’s your job to educate others about your allergies. 5. Have an emergency plan. Anyone at risk for a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis, needs to always have immediate access to epinephrine auto injectors. Almost every fatality from food allergy involves lack of timely use of epinephrine. Even when you’re at the gym or out with friends, find a way to keep two doses of epinephrine on hand. Businesses brace for a summer with record low unemployment
BRANDPOINT MEDIA
S
chool closing for the summer may mark lazy days for kids, but local businesses are bracing for peak season. With unemployment at a 17-year low, and a record 6.6 million job openings reported at the end of March, it’ll be tougher than usual to serve the seasonal boom of customers as the weather warms up. Traditionally, many hourly positions were filled by teens on summer vacation who didn’t have another way to make some spare cash. This source of trusty summer hires is down from 60 to 30 percent, which — coupled with a teeny 3.9 percent unemployment rate — means businesses that rely on heavy summer hiring should expect a smaller-than-usual batch of job seekers. Record-low unemployment means small teams with new or inexperienced hires handling the summer customer rush - a potential recipe for disaster, with managers filling in more gaps in service than usual. Not to worry! Here are a few tips to help keep things business as usual leading up to this challenging summer season.
impossible to focus on running the team. Using wall calendars and highlighters as a way to manage schedules wastes valuable hours. There are plenty of new technologies, from onboarding to payroll to scheduling, to take the hassle out of all the managerial muck. “Technology can be the secret weapon of Main Street with easy-to-use systems that automate everything from managing payroll to streamlining sales reports,” said John Waldmann, CEO of Homebase (joinhomebase.com), a top platform for managing the hourly workforce. “For example, Homebase can calculate overtime as you build your schedule and send text reminders to your employees to show up on time.” Attract employees with benefits you can afford Local and franchise businesses that rely on a minimum-wage workforce have been feeling pressure from increased labor costs. With higher hourly wages tightening already thin margins, businesses must rely on low-cost and high-impact benefits to attract and retain the best employees. A reliable front-of-house team is an essential part of the customer experience,

and bad service can override anything you’ve done on the product. Amy Simmons, founder of Amy’s Ice Cream, a local Austin chain, explains: “We want our team members to have just as much fun as our customers. Scoop-tossing tricks and great ice cream aren’t only what keep customers coming back, they keep employees excited to be a part of something fun and looking forward to coming in to work.” Building a great employee culture is a relatively inexpensive way to attract team members and keep them engaged. Simple things like providing a team meal or rewarding high-performing (or highly enthusiastic) employees are ways to create a shared sense of value. Amy’s takes this even a step further by spending time educating employees on how to read financial statements and run a successful business. Team meals with a side of education are a wonderful way to create value for employees and invest in their futures. Make and manage schedules that set everyone up for success Regardless of the season, every scheduled hour matters - every late start or no-show can hit the bottom line. During the summer,
