De-Clutter Your Child’s Room in Three Steps De-cluttering any room is challenging if you don’t know where to start. Sorting your child’s items into the three categories below can help de-clutter a mess easily. Since 1989

1. KEEP WHAT HE OR SHE LOVES Go through the items your child needs and wants to keep. This includes everything from their favorite clothing to books and toys. If he or she wants to keep clothing that is not in season, store it in the back of their closet. For books and toys, use a fun trunk for items being kept as memorabilia. 2. TEACH YOUR CHILD ABOUT LOCAL CHARITIES Use a box for items your child wants to give away. Introduce the idea of donating to local charities or schools in your area. There could be a charity that your child might be interested in donating to on a regular basis. 3. RECYCLE ITEMS YOUR CHILD DOESN’T WANT Introduce fun ways to teach your child about recycling and repurposing. Organize boxes that your child can label to collect paper items, plastic and miscellaneous items found in their room. At the end of the week, you and your child can see how much was collected. De-cluttering your child’s room can be stressful, but if you both take on certain parts of the room, it will cut the time in half. Plan a day each month to ensure your child’s room stays in tiptop shape.

FIX-IT

• Home & Garden Show 2011

TIPS:

Fix squeaky wood or tile floors by sprinkling baby powder on the surface of the floor that’s squeaking. Then place a chisel between the boards and gently hammer the top to pry up the tile or floorboard. Sprinkle more baby powder underneath the board to seal the excess space causing the squeaking. Get Your House Ready for Summer

The dog days of summer can really put the heat on electricity bills and put even the best air conditioning systems to the test. “The Department of Energy says

that almost 45 percent of a homeowner’s utility costs come from heating and cooling the house. Fortunately, there are some simple things you can do to

help lower those costs, keep your system working as it should, and beat the summer heat,” says Dave Quandt, Senior VP of Field Services for American

Home Shield, one of the nation’s leading providers of home warranty services. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when summer temperatures start to sizzle: • An air conditioner set at 70°F can cost twice as much to operate as one set at 78°F. Raise the thermostat by 2 degrees above its normal setting. You’ll still be comfortable, and your pocketbook will thank you. • Set the thermostat to 80°F when you’ll be out of the house for several hours and lower it when you return. But don’t shut the air conditioner off; it’s less efficient to cool the house back down than to leave it set at a higher tem-

perature. • A ceiling fan uses about as much energy as a 100-watt bulb, but it can make a room feel up to eight degrees cooler. In summer, blades should turn counterclockwise, pushing air downward to create a cool breeze. • Keeping windows closed and curtains drawn during the day can reduce cooling costs by 30 percent. • Lights, computers and televisions all generate heat. Turn them off when they’re not in use. • Create shade for the unit, but keep the area around the exterior condensing unit clear of leaves, bushes and other obstructions to ensure adequate airflow.

• Clean or replace the air conditioner filter monthly. Clogged, dirty filters block air flow and make a unit work much harder. A clean filter can save up to 10 percent on your bill. Courtesy: www.familyfeatures.com

Lawn Mower Care Regular lawn mower maintenance is vital to keeping this tool running well. These tips from the experts at TruGreen will help you take care of the workhorse of lawn care.

Sharpen the blade The sharper the blade, the cleaner your mower will cut the grass, and the better your lawn will look. Dull blades can shred grass and cause discoloration

at the tips. If you don’t have the time or the inclination to sharpen the blade yourself, pack up your mower (or carefully remove the mower blade) and take it to a repair

Make your first home your dream home with natural gas New homebuyers fall in love with natural gas because of lower energy bills and amenities like gas cooking and a gas fireplace. When you choose a home with natural gas, you’ve made the smart energy choice, because it’s efficient, comfortable and clean. To learn about all the great ways natural gas adds value to a new home visit www.atmosenergy.com/whychoosegas. Atmos Energy, your natural gas company. Customer Service • 1-888-286-6700

shop or home improvement store. For the doit yourselfer, take a look at these general tips – for safety, always consult the owner’s manual for instructions specific to your machine. To sharpen a blade: • Drain the gas and disconnect the spark plug. • Clamp a piece of wood to the deck to keep the blade from turning. • Turn the blade bolt counter clockwise to remove it. If there is resistance, apply some penetrating oil, wait 15 minutes and try again. • Remove the blade and mark the bottom side so you can put it

back on correctly. • Clamp the blade in a bench vise and sharpen with a 10-inch mill file. Use long strokes and work from the center outward. Use the same number of strokes on each side and keep the same angle. • Balance the blade on a balance tool – it’s an inexpensive pyramid-

shaped tool that can be found in most hardware stores. If one side of the blade hangs lower than the other, grind off excess metal from the end of the blade – not from the part just sharpened. • Reinstall blade. When you reinstall the mower blade, make sure you place it at the proper mowing height. Courtesy: www.familyfeatures.com

The earlier you start training your dog the better. Old dogs can learn new tricks, but if you have a puppy, begin training as soon as you bring it home. Let it know right away what parts of the garden are off limits. And don’t assume puppies can’t learn. Even puppies as young as six weeks old can master basic commands.

Put the Fun in Function

Making the Most of Kitchen Storage If cooking is a hassle for you, it may be time to do some reorganizing. Curtis Stone, star of the reality cooking show “Take Home Chef,” thinks that a beautiful, well-organized kitchen can make a world of difference to home cooks. “When I was doing ‘Take Home Chef’ and cooking in all these different houses,” says Stone, “I was thinking, why is it so difficult to cook in people’s homes? It was so easy in a professional kitchen! Well, one of the main differences between a professional kitchen and residential kitchen is organization. But with the right organizational features, cooking can be fun and relaxing.” Get in the Zone

According to Paul Radoy, manager of design services for Merillat, the best way to approach kitchen organization and storage is to look at the room in sections. “All kitchens have a cooking zone and a cleanup zone,” he says. “And some kitchens may have an island or pantry. Each of these areas lends themselves to various storage opportunities.” The Cooking Zone Food preparation and cooking are the primary functions of a kitchen, which is why keeping cooking items organized and within easy reach is key. The National Association of Professional Organizers recommends observing the flow of activity in your kitchen

and organizing around it. Stone agrees, saying, “I believe the kitchen should be designed for the way you live.” Whether you’re installing new cabinets or working with your existing units, try to optimize your space by creating specified storage areas. • Group objects by purpose and dedicate specific storage areas for them. Having all the bakeware together or all the pots and pans together lets you get to what you need quickly and efficiently. • Store pots and pans as close to the stove as possible. • Keep utensils where you can reach them easily while cooking. A utensil hanging system on the backsplash, or

a pull-down knife rack under the wall cabinet next to the cooktop keeps you from digging through drawers. The Pantry Zone If you’re tired of hunting through a dozen canned goods to find the one you really need, or if you end up buying items you didn’t know you already had, then it’s time to reorganize the pantry. Group similar food items together, the way you see them on grocery store shelves. Keep canned goods on one shelf, breakfast foods on another, baking ingredients on another. If you don’t have a lot of builtin storage space, look for ways to maximize what you do have. • Individual turntables are great for organizing and storing spices and smaller pantry items. • Stacking platforms

Peg dividers for drawers can be customized so you can fit your pots and pans however you like.

can go in taller shelf spaces to eliminate wasted space. • Pullout shelves or baskets can utilize even more space in a cupboard. “From a chef’s perspective, and from a home cook’s perspective,” says Stone,

“when you’re working in a kitchen that makes sense, it makes the whole cooking experience much easier – and more fun.” For more on the latest kitchen storage solutions, visit www.merillat. com. Courtesy: www.familyfeatures.com

Selecting Tomato Varieties

resistance to diseases, you can have a bit more control over your garden’s success. For instance, many tomato varieties are resistant to soil-borne diseases such as Verticillium and Fusarium wilts and nematodes. Most seed catalogs indicate

resistance to these diseases by putting F (Fusarium), V (Verticillium), N (nematodes) after the variety name. You’ll also see varieties with resistance to viruses such as tomato mosaic virus (T), and to Alternaria (A), the fungus that causes early blight.

Talk to a nearby Extension Service office or to other home gardeners to find out if any tomato diseases are common in your area. For more tips and garden information visit www.garden.org Courtesy: www.familyfeatures.com

Think Budget Blinds….

for beautiful custom window covers that fit you budget!

With store-bought tomatoes nearly devoid of flavor, growing your own is the best way to truly savor the taste of this vegetable that captures the essence of summer. But with thousands of varieties available -- from cherished heirloom types to the hottest new hybrids -- how do you narrow your choices? Ripening time. If you’re buying seeds to start your own plants, read catalog descriptions carefully to discover “days to maturity.” This indicates approximately how soon you can expect ripe fruit once you’ve transplanted seedlings to the garden. Plants sold at garden centers are often labeled “early,” “midseason,” or “late” to indicate when the variety should start ripening. Determinate vs. Indeterminate. Determinate plants stop growing once the flower buds emerge. Because of their more

restrained size, many determinate varieties need no staking or caging, but providing support can improve the quality of the fruit. All the fruit ripens within a relatively short period of time -- usually about a week to 10 days. This can be a boon if you’re canning, but for the gardener who prefers to have a fewer number of tomatoes over a longer period of time, indeterminate varieties are a better choice. The vines continue to grow and set fruit throughout the season and won’t quit until the weather turns too hot or too cold to sustain fruiting and growth. How you will use the fruit. When selecting a tomato variety, keep in mind what you plan to do with the fruits. There are varieties suited for just about every purpose -- eating fresh, making tomato paste, canning, drying -- even for grooming into a county fair prizewinner. Seeds or transplants.

The easiest way to get your tomato patch started is to purchase young plants, also called transplants or starts. You can pick up plants at garden centers or order them through catalogs or the Internet. That said, starting your own seed gives you an almost endless list of varieties to choose from, allowing you to get just the type that will suit your growing conditions and tastes. Starting seeds gives you a chance to exercise your green thumb earlier in the season, and nurturing plants from seed to harvest is a rewarding experience. Plant seeds six to eight weeks before the last frost date for your region, and place them under fluorescent lights. Contact a nearby Extension Service office or your local weather service to find out your last spring frost date. Disease resistance. By planting tomato varieties with built-in

A Small Project with Big Savings A cost effective and easy-to-install energy savings project could pay back homeowners with significant savings on their home energy bills, according to a new study commissioned by The Dow Chemical Company. The study found that homeowners save an average of $50 annually on their energy bills by air sealing gaps, cracks and other exposed areas of the home with an insulating foam sealant. Participants of the study showed a return on investment of their product purchase in as little as four months after application. The study findings indicate that the expected average one-year return on investment for homes using Great Stuff Pro and Great Stuff Insulating Foam Sealants ranged from 145 percent to 2,374 percent, with savings ranging from $26 to $163

Depending on application area, cost and quantity of materials. Project leader Doug Bibee, a 36year veteran of Dow and member of the company’s Building Solutions group, said the project’s genesis came from a commonly accepted but undocumented belief regarding energy loss. “There was this generally recognized notion in our industry that air leakage played a big part in energy losses for a typical home. What we couldn’t find any information on was quantifying the energy savings across certain products dealing with air leakage,” Bibee said. “We wanted to know how much air leakage was reduced in certain parts of home using a product like Great Stuff™ Insulating Foam Sealant. It was equally important, however, that products could be used by the average homeowner over the course of a few hours or weekend.”

To help homeowners conduct their own study, the Dow team took common leak locations discovered during the weatherization project and created an Air-Seal Audit Checklist. This document helps homeowners navigate and identify their homes’ own air loss trouble spots and provides further information on the best remedies. This weatherization project is part of a larger company initiative to quantify the impact of air sealing and insulating, and to educate homeowners about weatherization practices that help reduce a home’s energy consumption. Flatten a banana peel and bury it under one inch of soil at the base of a rosebush. The peel’s potassium feeds the plant and helps it resist disease. Consider it a nutritional boost for you and your buds.

Pruning a Shrub Rose

Many a gardener has stood before a favorite rose shrub with pruners in hand, hesitant to make the first cut. Thorns aside, it can be downright intimidating to cozy up to a shrub rose to try to direct its future growth and flowering. Fortunately these plants don’t need a lot of pruning and are very forgiving. Their fast growth will soon cover any pruning cuts, and their informal shape doesn’t necessitate taming. With some basic tools and guidelines, you can tidy up the plant and encourage abundant flowering. The main reasons to prune a rose are to

remove dead and damaged canes, increase blooming, and decrease disease and pest problems. The best time to prune is early spring just before new growth begins, but remove spent flowers and dead canes whenever they occur. The goal is to keep the center of the shrub free of twiggy, weak growth that’s especially susceptible to attack by insects and disease. Collect your equipment. Pruning thorny rose shrubs requires sturdy, thorn-proof gloves and safety glasses to protect your eyes. Look for elbowlength gloves at garden centers. You also need a pair of sharp hand

pruners for canes up to 1/2 inch in diameter. Use long-handled loppers or a small pruning saw to cut larger stems and to reach into the center of dense shrubs. Inspect your rose plant. First, identify all dead and damaged canes. Next, locate long thin canes and canes that grow from below the graft union, if the plant is grafted. Lastly, look for canes that rub against or crowd each other, especially if they’re growing through the center of the bush. Determine where to cut. Prune canes back to buds that face the outside of the shrub. Cut the spindly canes back by half their length or to

2 to 3 feet long. Cut or break off canes completely that grow from below the graft union. Remove diseased canes, and those that rub or crowd, back to healthy, outward-facing buds. If you see brown tissue in the center of a cane when you cut it, prune a little farther back until the tissue is clear and healthy. In cold-climate areas, wait to prune until the buds just begin to swell in spring. Then it’s easy to tell the difference between healthy canes and buds and those that didn’t make it through the winter. Make the right pruning cut. Make your cut about 1/4 inch above a healthy bud and at a 45 degree angle. The bud and the high point of

the cut should be on the same side of the cane so that water will drain away from the bud. To prevent the spread of disease, clean your pruning tools between shrubs with a mix of one part bleach and nine parts water. Fertilize after pruning. To encourage flowering, use a rose fertilizer as recommended on the label. Remove spent flowers. To encourage repeat

flowering, use hand pruners or scissors to remove flowers as soon as they finish blooming. Cut each flower stem back to the next lower set of leaves. (No longer is it recommended to cut back to a 5-leaflet leaf because this removes too much foliage and can slow reblooming.) Use the minimal amount of fertilizer necessary and apply it in small, frequent applications. An application of 2 pounds of fertilizer five times per year is better than 5 pounds of fertilizer twice a year. Follow label directions.
