IF THERE’S MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
FOR PEACE OF MIND, THIS IS IT.
Knowing the best care you could hope for is located just a few miles away comes as a huge relief for residents of northern Colorado. Especially when you consider that only the top 2% of the country’s 4,500 hospitals received such recognition. And only one, North Colorado Medical Center, received this honor in northern Colorado. That sort of kudos, so close by, will surely reduce your stress level. And that’s a healthy thing. BannerHealth.com/NCMC • Connect with us:

Tough Enough to Wear Pink works to raise awareness for breast cancer and bring a message of hope and support for those fighting. North Colorado Medical Center is committed to the very same thing. That’s why we provide state-of-the-art breast cancer treatments and encourage women to get regular mammograms. Welcome to the Greeley Stampede Thank you for choosing to attend the 2013 Greeley Stampede. With a variety of summer activities available, we are honored you picked the festivities at the Greeley Stampede. It is our goal for the Stampede to become your family tradition, and if it already is a tradition we hope this year exceeds your previous experiences with us. If this is your first time at the Stampede, you are now part of ninetyone years of tradition. In the past ninety years, millions of people have attended and remembered the fun they shared at the Greeley Stampede. During the festivities, you will find the excitement of the Old West and the spirit the Western way of life brought to Northern Colorado. The nationally recognized PRCA Rodeos take viewers from the edge of their seats to uproarious cheers. The Stampede features “the best of the best” both of cowboys and livestock at each rodeo event. They will amaze you with their skill, ability, and strength. Our Stock Contractor, Beutler & Son Rodeo Co., considered one of the best in the country, has been providing top quality livestock for the Greeley Stampede for over 30 years. Our rodeo announcers are renowned within the industry. Will Rasmussen joins Hadley Barrett who has announced the Stampede for over 30 years. Not to mention, PRCA’s 2012 Clown of the Year, Justin Rumford, adds his expertise to the 2013 team. As a community event, there will be five concerts in the arena and over 50 bands and performers on the Free Stage. Park attractions include the racing pigs, Wolves of the World, mutton’ bustin’, mouthwatering food, and quality shops. Centennial Village will be open with all sorts of Western attractions for your enjoyment, including a not-to-be-missed Murder Mystery Dinner. For as long as there has been a Stampede, the carnival has been a feature to gather the community to the park for fun and thrills. Carnival Americana has been a partner for over 30 years and we appreciate their clean, family friendly atmosphere. As the largest 4th of July Rodeo in the nation, we will again feature the morning parade, afternoon rodeo, concerts on the Free Stage and to cap off the day an outstanding fireworks display to celebrate America’s 237th birthday. The Greeley Stampede Committee is proud to host this 2013 event. We hope to provide something for everyone to enjoy this year and in the future. The 11 day event is made possible by the support of many sponsors, donors, and volunteers from all over Northern Colorado as well as a dedicated staff. Throughout this event you’ll find acknowledgements to everyone who contributed time, resources and funds to continue this tradition. Please take time to recognize their contributions and support the businesses who help sustain the Greeley Stampede. It has been an honor to serve as the 2013 General Chairman. My dream is for the Greeley Stampede to continue to be the premier event in Northern Colorado and one of the jewels in the crown which makes Greeley such a wonderful place to live. Sincerely, Trudy Sargent, General Chariman

Celebrate the 91ST Greeley Stampede! The past five months since being invited to join the team at the Greeley Stampede have been an absolute whirlwind. The committee, staff and volunteers have been hustling to assemble another unforgettable installment of the World’s Largest 4th of July Rodeo and Western Celebration, and we can’t wait for you to step on the grounds at Island Grove Park! I have been so impressed by the dedication, support and commitment that the community of Northern Colorado has for the Stampede, and am excited to become a part of such a longstanding and well-loved event. More than just an event, the Greeley Stampede is a tradition that each year brings back experiences families have come to share for literally generations. Join us this summer to enjoy everything you’ve come to expect from the Greeley Stampede – rodeo, shopping, food, mutton bustin’, western art, music, carnival rides … the high adrenaline action of a top-ranked PRCA rodeo featuring some of the best pro rodeo talent to take the dirt, including PRCA’s 2012 Clown of the Year, Justin Rumford; and a lineup of award winning musicians from legends like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Los Lobos to country stars like Trace Adkins and Josh Turner. Even if 2013 will mark your 91st trip to the Greeley Stampede, don’t think for a moment you’ve seen it all before! This year’s event features a number of all new activities and attractions – from family fun with a little friendly competition over at the Racing Pigs to a dramatic affair at Centennial Village during the Murder at the Stampede Mystery Dinner. Not to mention even more heart-pounding excitement as athletes from two very different arenas showcase their skills both on the mat for Sparta Combat League’s Live MMA cage fighting and in the dirt to face off with a four-legged, 2,000 pound opponent at the American Bullfighting. I assure you, this year’s Stampede will not disappoint! And so, I would like to officially invite you to join me at the 91st Annual Greeley Stampede and see it all over again as if it was the very first time, just like I will! Sincerely, Anthea Dreisbach, General Manager

2013 Stampede Grand Marshals Bill and Sharon Farr
The Greeley Stampede is honored to announce Bill and Sharon Farr as the 2013 Greeley Stampede Grand Marshals. Each year since 1928 the Stampede Committee has recognized outstanding citizens for their many community and regional contributions to Northern Colorado by choosing them to represent the Greeley Stampede. Bill Farr is a fourth generation Greeley native and the third generation in his family, including Harry W. Farr and W.D. Farr, to be chosen as a Grand Marshal. He and his family have been actively involved in Weld County for over 135 years and the Greeley Stampede since its’ inception in 1922. In 1992, Bill founded Centennial Bank of the West and served as CEO until the Bank sold to Castle Creek Investments in 2004 which is now Guaranty Bank and Trust. He served as President of Farr Farms Company, the Colorado Cattle Feeders Association and the U.S. Meat Export Federation,as well as participated as a Director and Officer of several local water and agricultural boards. Always active in the community, Bill’s credits include Rotary, Boy Scouts, Greeley Elks, Boys Club, Greeley Country Club and the First Congregational Church. Bill’s commitment to the Stampede is longstanding. During his years on the committee, the Wrangler organization was started, the event name was changed from “Go West with Greeley” to “The Greeley Independence Stampede”. That committee also helped designate the Stampede as “The Largest 4th of July Rodeo and Western
Celebration”. One of Bill’s favorite memories…The committee arranged for Actor/singer Ken Curtis from the TV series Gunsmoke to sing at the first Night show. The contract did not include a designed length of time, so Mr. Curtis sang until intermission and then left the grounds… Sharon is a third generation Weld County native. Her grandfather, Fred came from Sweden to settle in Eaton in 1885. Her father, Herman, faithfully took his family to the 4th of July celebration each July. It was the most anticipated event of the entire year for them. Sharon, a graduate of UNC, taught Home Economics at Meeker Jr. High and Greeley West. She also sold office furniture and started her own company, Farr Better Interiors. She has been an active member and officer of several organizations including American Association of University Women, Greeley Philharmonic, Centennial Rotary, United Way, Professional Employer Association, and Questers. She served three terms on the Greeley Museum Board. Her favorite memory of the Stampede is the Old Grand Stand (the original arena before it burnt down in the 1970’s). Both Bill and Sharon feel extremely honored and privileged to represent the Greeley Stampede as Grand Marshals.“This prestigious celebration is one of the most important events that occursin Northern Colorado. It brings together neighbors, friends, and visitors from all walks of life to focus on our community and celebrate the western traditions and freedoms we enjoy” said Bill.

JOSH TURNER Josh Turner launched his country music career with his first insightful and soulful song Long Black Train. His deep, distinctive voice caught MCA Nashville’s eye and he recorded his first album, Long Black Train, in 2003. Since then Turner has been one of country music’s most recognizable hit-makers earning numerous CMA, ACM and Grammy nominations. Turner has sold more than five million albums and garnered four No. 1 hits (including three multiweek chart-toppers): “Your Man,” “Would You Go With Me,” and “Why Don’t We Just Dance” (a four-week No. 1 that was named the mostplayed song of the year in 2010 by Media Base). His song, “All Over Me,” from Haywire also reached the top spot on the charts, making him one of only seven country artists to have two No. 1 hits in 2010. Turner recently released his newest album Punching Bag in 2012 which debuted at No. 1 on the charts.

Lynyrd Skynyrd
Legendary rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd is led by core members Gary Rossington, Johnny Van Zant and Rickey Medlocke, along with longtime drummer Michael Cartellone. Lynyrd Skynyrd has maintained a tremendous legacy that began over 40 years ago in Jacksonville, Florida, and continues with the recently released Last Of A Dying Breed (Roadrunner). The band’s career was halted for a decade after the 1977 plane crash that killed three band members, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines, and then subsequently faced adversity through the losses of Billy Powell, Ean Evans, Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson and Huey Thomasson, yet they continue to rock on. With a catalog of over 60 albums, sales beyond 30 million worldwide, and their beloved classic American rock anthem “Sweet Home Alabama” having over two million downloaded ringtones, Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Lynyrd Skynyrd remains a cultural icon appealing to all generations. The current line-up still blows audiences away and features Gary Rossington (Guitar), Johnny Van Zant (Vocals), Rickey Medlocke (Guitar), Mark “Sparky” Matejka (Guitar), Michael Cartellone (Drums), Johnny Colt (Bass), Peter Keys (Keyboards), Dale Krantz Rossington- Honkettes (Backing Vocals) and Carol Chase-Honkettes (Backing Vocals).

Los Lonely Boys, Los Lobos, and Alejandro Escovedo
Los Lonely Boys is an American Chicano rock power trio from San Angelo, Texas. They play a style of music they call “Texican Rock n’ Roll” combining elements of rock and roll, Texas blues, soul, country, and Tejano. The band consists of three brothers: Henry Garza (guitar, vocals), Jojo Garza (bass, vocals), and Ringo Garza (drums, vocals). They follow the tradition of their father who formed a band with his brothers called the Falcones. To date, Los Lonely Boys have released three studio albums and a live album, all on the Epic Records label. Their debut single, “Heaven,” was a number one hit on the Billboard adult contemporary chart and reached the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2004. With their multi-chart gold single, Grammywins, and legendary opening performance for the Rolling Stones, it’s easy to say that this rock n’ roll trio of brothers have proven themselves as one of the best musical success stories of the last decade. They deliver their unique sound with their fourth album Rockpango. Rockpango paves the way for Los Lonely Boys to leave an epic mark in the music industry. As pioneers of Chicano-Rock, Los Lobos has garnered Grammy awards, a No. 1 single, and nearly a dozen rock hits over their thirty-plus year career. Originally dubbed Los Lobos del Este (de Los Angeles), the East Los Angeles group shortened their name and released their first independent albumn in 1978. Los Lobos achieved critical success with their 1984 release, How Will the Wolf Survive, which was produced by T-Bone Burnett and yielded two top-forty rock singles. In 1987 they hit No. 1 with “La Bamba” from the bio-pic of the same name. Los Lobos earned two Grammy Awards in 1983 and 1987 in the Best Mexican-American Performance category. In 1995, they released the single “Mariachi Suite” from the album Papa’s Dream which won a Grammy Award. Los Lobos has continued to tour and record, and their exciting and energetic concerts keep devoted fans coming back. Alejandro Escovedo is his own genre, as his songs stem from hard-won personal experience, positivity, faith, youthful spirit, and a devotion to country rock. The Mexican American singersongwriter adapted his rock/alternative country style when he moved to Austin, Texas in the 1980’s. He formed the True Believers with his brother Javier, opening for acts like Los Lobos. However, it was the release of his first solo albums, Gravity in 1992 and Thirteen Years in 1994, where he found his true voice. Escovedo released an album in 2008 titled Real Animal. In 2010, he released Street of Songs with his band The Sensitive Boys. His tireless touring and dogged determination to place one album after another has taken him through many musical scenes all the while remaining the same persona within each, an artist who doesn’t settle for the easy way out.

SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS Parade
It’s time for the 4th of July Greeley Stampede parade, a traditional event that bring families back year after year. The parade is one of the largest in the nation showcasing over 120 entries and attracting tens of thousands of eager spectators. Floats, bands and equestrian entries from all over Colorado and many neighboring states line up to celebrate our nation’s independence and Colorado’s Western heritage. Noble Energy helped get a makeover for the Committee’s parade wagon. The parade runs north along historic 10th Avenue starting amidst the beautiful University of Northern Colorado campus at 19th Street and ends on 5th Street beyond historic Lincoln Park. In anticipation of finding the best seats along the route, spectators start roping off their “spots” at the end of June. The parade kicks off at 9 a.m. sharp on July 4th and will be led by this year’s Grand Marshals, Bill & Sharon Farr.
Sparta Combat League Presents Live MMA Extreme Cage Fighting
For the first time in Greeley Stampede history, Sparta Combat will bring Live Mixed Martial Arts to the event! MMA is a full contact combat sport which allows both striking and grappling techniques. Roots of the sport can be traced back to the ancient Olympics. It originated as a competition to find the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations and has evolved with many new styles and rules aimed at increasing safety for competitors. It now rivals the popularity of boxing and professional wrestling.

American Bullfighting
American Bullfighting, a new event at the Greeley Stampede this year, highlights one of the most dangerous jobs in sports. A bullfighter’s main task during bull riding is to keep the cowboy safe, often times by distracting the animal. This event highlights the bullfighters and tests their speed, agility and courage as they are matched against some of the best animal athletes in the country. They are scored on the degree of difficulty of their approaches and how close they get to the bulls horns, in essence making them an effective bullfighter.

pro rodeo event descriptions

Bareback Bronc Riding A bareback rider uses a rigging, made of leather, which resembles a suitcase handle on a leather strap. It is placed atop the horse’s withers (the ridge between the shoulder bones) and secured with a cinch. As the horse comes out of the chute, the rider must have both spurs touching the horse’s shoulders until the horse’s front feet hit the ground after the initial jump out of the chute. This is called “marking out.” The rider will be disqualified if he fails to do so. A successful ride is based on the cowboy’s spurring technique, holding on with one hand, not touching anything with his free hand, and staying on the bronc for at least 8-seconds. Steer Wrestling The steer wrestler (aka bulldogger) starts out on horseback behind a barrier and begins his chase after the steer has been given a head start. The bulldogger will receive a 10-second penalty if he breaks the barrier early. The steer wrestler is assisted by a hazer, another cowboy on horseback, who keeps the steer running in a straight line. When the bulldogger’s horse is even with the steer, he eases down the right side of the horse and reaches for the steer’s horns. After grasping the horns, he digs his heels into the dirt. As the steer slows, the cowboy turns the animal, lifts up on its right horn and pushes down with his left hand to tip the steer over. The steer wrestler must either bring the steer to a stop or change the direction of the animal’s body before the throw or is disqualified. The clock stops when the steer is on his side with his head and all four legs pointing in the same direction. Team Roping Team roping is the only rodeo event that features two contestants. The team is made up of a header and a heeler. The header exits the box first. He ropes the horns, then wraps his rope around his saddle horn (dallies) and turns the steer to the left for the other cowboy to rope the heels. The heeler must throw a loop with precision timing to catch both of the steer’s hind legs. The time clock stops once both ropers are facing each other with both ropes tight after they’ve made the catch and brought the animal to a stop. Just as in steer wrestling, the animal gets a head start. The barrier is stretched across the header’s box, which if crossed early, the team is assessed a 10-second penalty. A team that ropes one hind leg
will have 5 seconds added on to their time. Saddle Bronc Riding A saddle bronc rider uses a thick rein attached to his horse’s halter. As in bareback, the cowboy uses one hand and tries to stay securely seated in his saddle for 8-seconds. The cowboy strives to keep his toes turned outward while he spurs from the horse’s shoulders to the back of the saddle. He must maintain this during the 8-seconds to score well. Tie Down or Calf Roping After the calf is given a head start, rider and his horse begin their chase. The cowboy ropes the calf, then dismounts and runs to the animal. After catching and flanking, or flipping the calf, the cowboy ties any three of the animal’s legs together using a “pigging string” that he carries in his teeth until needed. The knot used is called a “hooey.” If the calf is not standing when the cowboy reaches it, he must allow the animal to stand, and then flank it. When the cowboy completes his tie, he throws his hands in the air as a signal to the judge. He then remounts his horse and allows the rope to become slack. The run is disqualified if the calf kicks free within six seconds. As with any timed event, a 10-second penalty is added if the calf roper breaks the barrier early. Barrel Racing In barrel racing, the rider enters the arena at full speed on a sprinting Quarter Horse. As the horse and rider start the pattern, the clock begins. The racer rides a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels positioned in the arena, and sprints back out of the area to stop the clock. The rider can touch or even move the barrels, but receives a 5-second penalty for each barrel that is overturned. Bull Riding Bull riders are judged mostly on their ability to stay aboard the twisting, bucking mass of muscle and horns. The rider tries to remain forward, or “over his hand,” at all times. Leaning back could cause him to be whipped forward when the bull bucks. Judges watch for good body position and other factors, including use of the free arm and spurring. Although not required, spurring will add points to a rider’s score. As in all the riding events, half of the score in bull riding is determined by the cowboy’s performance, and the other half is based on the animal’s efforts. A bull rider will be disqualified for touching the animal, himself or his equipment with his free hand.
