8 WAYS to stay safe this summer By Meagan Birely mbirely@greeleytribune.com

Summertime. It’s the time for pool parties, barbecues and outdoor fun. After being inside for several months, it’s time to break out and soak in the sun. But with this new freedom may come mosquitoes, sunburns and sickness. Kelly Imus, a health education specialist at the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment, and Mary Branom, a registered dietician at North Colorado Medical Center, weighed

in on eight summer safety and health tips.

■ Pack picnic, but leave

the foodborne illness out

Branom said the rule for packing food on the go is pretty simple: keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold until serving. This rule will help prevent foodborne illnesses. The danger zone for food temperatures is 40-140 degrees, which means your cold food should be kept under 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and your hot foods should be cooked at the appropriate temperature above 140 degrees

Fahrenheit. According to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Services, beef and pork should be cooked to 160 degrees, and turkey and chicken should be cooked to 165 degrees. For The Tribune/Thinkstock

■ Keep the critters off

Bug repellent is a must when outside. Imus said she recommends not going out at dusk or dawn when mosquitoes are most active. She also recommends repellent with DEET. “DEET is actually the ingredient in bug spray that prevents bugs from biting,” she said.

Children older than 6 months should be sprayed by an adult and sprayed with a repellent that contains less than 30 percent DEET. Spray with 25 percent DEET will last for five hours, and spray containing 5 percent DEET will last 45-90 minutes. Imus also said it is important to get rid of standing water in your

yard, in places such as birdbaths or toys in the yard, as mosquitoes are attracted to shallow warm water.

■ Some plants can make you itch, too

sumac can be found all over the United States. If you brush up against some during a camping trip or outdoor adventure, The American Council on Science and Health said the damage to the skin can be minimized. The council recommends washing the irritated skin as soon as possible with cold water and soap. There are soap brands that are made to break down urushiol, which is the oily residue from the plants that is transferred. A reaction can take seven to 10 days to appear, so it is important to know what these plants look like and where you will find them.

■■Sunscreen is your best weapon against the summer sun

The federal government recently changed the labeling on sunscreen bottles to help consumers recognize sunscreens that have both UVA and UVB protection. Imus said to use sunscreen that is above SPF 15 and is labeled with “broad spectrum.” This type of sunscreen can help reduce the risks of skin cancer and early ageing. To use sunscreen effectively, Imus said to apply 15-30 minutes before going in the sun and to reapply after being in the water or sweating. She also said spray sunscreen or lotion sunscreen is fine, as long as it is labeled with the proper SPF

and broad spectrum. Imus added that people should avoid being outside from 10 a.m.3 p.m., when the sun is most intense.

■■Sun protection

is more than just sunscreen

Sunscreen is great for the exposed skin but your eyes also need protection. Imus said the best sunglasses have 99 percent to 100 percent UVA and UVB protection. An over exposure to UVA rays can cause cataracts.

■■Seek shelter

Other than staying out of the water during and electrical storm, it is also important to avoid open areas.

Seek shelter, but not under a tree. Hiding under trees or holding metal objects can increase the chance of a lighting strike. If you are stuck in an open field during a storm, Imus said not to lay flat on the ground. “We encourage people to make themselves as small as possible,” she said. “Ball up on your toes and hug your knees, but the better alternative is to find shelter.”

■■Be smart and

watchful at the pool

Summer and swimming are usually synonymous with each other. Kids wait for the day that the pool opens. Imus said it is important to encourage kids to learn how to swim and dive well, but no

matter how good of a swimmer they are, they should never be left alone. Flotation devices are great fun to have in the pool, but Imus said there is a caution to them. “Flotation devices are great, but often lead to over confidence,” she said. They are not a compensation for swimming inabilities.” People should also stay out of the water during and electrical storm because lighting is attracted to water.

■■Know the signs of overheating in the summer sun

Summer is great time to be outside and active. But it is important to remember the added heat is added pressure on your body.

n

June 29, 2011

“We have a lot of active people in Colorado,” Imus said. “But there is a limit in which your body can’t maintain normal temperature.” Keep hydrated while outside and remember to cool off. If your body does reach the limit, heat disorder can set it. “Heat disorder can bring fatigue, fainting, exhaustion and, worse cause scenario, heat stroke, which is a complete break down in bodies cooling mechanisms.” Imus said the warning signs can include a lack of perspiration, skin turning red or blue, skin is hot and dry to touch, rapid pulse, and the body temperature is at about 105 degrees.

A gastroenterologist with North Colorado Medical Center is one of the first in the region to offer a new treatment for Barrett’s esophagus – a precancerous condition that affects the lining of the esophagus. Dr. Mark Rosenblatt with North Colorado Gastroenterology treats patients using endoscopic ablation. Patients who have received the treatment and been followed for two years show 95 percent to 100 percent success in the eradication of Barrett’s tissues. To date, about 75,000 procedures have been completed nationwide. Barrett’s is caused by chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease, and it affects more than 3.3 million adults

older than 50 in the United States. Left untreated, Barrett’s can lead to esophageal cancer. Ablation is an alternative to watchful waiting for patients who have GERD and abnormal cell develop- Rosenblatt ment in the esophagus but don’t yet require surgery. Ablation removes the diseased tissue allowing normal cells to grow. Steps for endoscopic ablation are similar to those of a standard endoscopy. The patient fasts overnight and then visits the preoperative staff and anesthesiologist

before the procedure. During the procedure, the patient is under conscious sedation. The physician inserts the gastroscope in the mouth and into the esophagus to look at the area where Barrett’s is found. Then the physician will pass down the device and begin the ablation of those cells. The ablation is done with radiofrequency waves to superficially burn the top layer of the esophagus. The depth of the affected area is about a hair’s width. The procedure takes about 30 minutes. The patient is monitored in recovery and receives bev-

erages before going home. The physician prescribes a liquid diet for a day and softfood diet for five days. The patient returns for an exam after eight weeks. If Barrett’s cells remain, the physician will do a second treatment. If there are no Barrett’s cells, the physician will take biopsies. “Presently there is no other treatment (for Barrett’s). We can give a patient antacids and hope the Barrett’s doesn’t get worse, but there is nothing to eradicate or reverse those (cell) changes,” he said. If the condition gets severe enough, the patient could have surgery to remove the damaged part of the esophagus. Sara Quale is a public relations specialist for Banner Health.

2011 REPORT CARD

HOW HEALTHY ARE OUR KIDS?

■ Weld has made strides in obesity and pregnancy rates, but we still face big problems By Sherrie Peif speif@greeleytribune.com

C

olorado’s children are getting fatter, using alcohol at a younger age, giving birth before finishing high school and, overall, are just not as healthy as they should be. Weld County’s children, in most aspects, fit the same mold. However, according to the most recent data available, Weld is doing better than the state average in some categories, such as obesity, living uninsured and teenage pregnancies. A few categories, though, still haunt community leaders — the number of Weld’s children who are drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and attempting or committing suicide. Weld Prevention Partners, a coalition of government and private industry professionals, is seeking ways to curb those problems. Nomie Ketterling, the director of the group for the past five years, said large strides are being made in communities that have been receptive to the group. But with one of the larger indicators for alcohol use and depression being poverty, and Weld being one of the poorest counties in the state, much more work needs to be done. “It’s just the demographics,” she said. The next big step for Weld Prevention Partners is a summit at the University of Northern Colorado in the fall, when leaders from across the county will meet for eight hours to put together a strategic plan to face the problem head on. In the meantime, how does Weld rate against the state in the health of our children? Here’s a look at how our kids’ health would look on a report card.

HEALTHY BEGINNINGS

C+

Delayed prenatal care and smoking while pregnant are among several factors that contribute to low birth weight. Weld, however, remains below state averages for prenatal care, low birth-weight babies and infant mortality rates. According to the Colorado Health Foundation, Colorado ranks 24 in the United States in healthy beginnings with a grade of C. Compared with the state, Weld, which is only slightly below in most categories, gets a C+. Health indicator

Many of Weld’s children live in poverty, and many of those children are not covered by health insurance. Children without insurance are more likely to lack medical and dental care. But with increased access to insurance through Colorado’s Child Health Plan Plus, the number of uninsured children is dropping. Child Health Plan Plus for children is a state subsidized health plan for families that do not qualify for Medicaid but don’t make enough money to insure their

children through private insurance or their employer. Compared with Colorado, Weld had a higher percentage of children living in poverty but was level with the state for those living without insurance. Childhood obesity is also on the rise. According to the Colorado Health Foundation, Colorado ranks 30th in the United States in Healthy Children with a D+ grade. Weld, which has a higher percentage of children living in poverty, has a lower percentage of children without health insurance, a higher percentage of children participating in vigorous activity and a lower percentage of children who are overweight/obese. So Weld’s grade is C. Health indicator

Adolescent health habits contribute greatly to becoming healthy adults. Good nutrition and good mental health are challenges for Weld’s teens while

peer pressure for binge drinking and smoking are among the highest reasons for poor teen health. The number of pregnancies among adolescents is on the decline in Weld but still higher than the state average. Compared with Colorado (3 percent), 4 percent to 6 percent of babies in Weld are born to mothers ages 10-17. According to The Colorado Health Foundation, Colorado ranks 17th in the United States in teen health with a grade of B-. Weld is one of the leading counties in the state for teens who drink, smoke, attempt suicide and have sex. Weld’s grade for health adolescents is a C-. Health indicator
